I’m looking for an inexpensive school in Pattaya who can provide me a letter to open a student visa (ED). I’m leaving Thailand in a few days and would like to get back to Thailand in August.

Any recommendations?

This is a bit more complex than getting a 'letter' from the school. The process requires that the school apply to the Ministry and they then provide an official certificate, which is attached to the plethora of papers {licences etc.} from the school, to allow you to apply for a visa. My guess is that you'll have to arrange your course, pay for it, and then get the school to courier the official papers to you.

As I read your post there are two language school adverts on the page,

however both are in Bangkok.

Wallen and Pro Language

Pro language has a Pattaya Branch.

However you'll have to pay for the full course upfront (around 26,000 - 28,000 Baht), and the school needs up to 3 weeks to arrange the paperwork with the ministry of education!

Since you'll only come back to Thailand in August, I'm sure the school will be able to mail the documents to you if you pay for the postage.

Count on 30,000 Baht with the mail service included!

wow… I didn’t think that the student visa gonna be so expensive.

What would be the cheapest way to stay in Thailand without moving back and forth? I’m 36 and retirement visa isn’t available for me yet.

It's not the visa which is expensive, it's the minimum 180 hours upfront paid schooling (needed to qualify for a ED visa) which is expensive.

Unfortunately there is no option for under 50's, not married and non working people.

Probably if the 30,000 Baht/year cost for an ED visa (including proper studying of the Thai language) is out of your financial reach, then you do not have sufficient funds available to come to live in Thailand anyway!

And, you actually have to attend the school, or you will not get your extensions. You have to pay immigration 1900 bath every 90 days to get another 90 day extension of stay.

I can afford 38k Baht/year, I would like to be sure that I’m on the right way and no better options are available.

The ED visa must be issued outside of Thailand or I can enter Thailand with 30 days stamp and adjust status later on?

The visa must be issued outside Thailand, there is no conversion option. The school has to provide documentation for each 'review' every 90 days confirming your attendance.

I managed to change my tourist visa into an ED-visa with the help of WorldWide TEFL. They offer Thai courses as well as TEFL courses.

If there are 21 days validity left on any kind of visa, the immigration will change the visa. Now I only have to do an "immigration run" every 90 days and pay them THB 1,900 for the extention. No more border-runs and I learn more about Thai language and culture on Saturdays.

I looked at the 8host website.

Can someone explain the math to me?

You are supposed to take an 180 lesson course for the ED visa.

They offer an ED visa course, of 3 hours per week.

So assuming each hour equals one lesson, 52 x 3 = 156. Not 180. So, what's up with that?

Actually, 2008 has 53 weeks and in reality every session lasts 3,5 hours which means 185.50 hours per year.

I cannot be objective when I say that Walen school would be good choice but we are not open in Pattaya yet, however if you are taling about August then this is perfect timing. We are right outside Careffour, yellow building. Please come for coffee.

if a school has a MOE approved program then they just include their info in the letter and my school provides some sort of official school stamp. The consulate might check a list or make a call to make sure its approved but thats about all that is required.

To be best of my knowledge, a language school {the rules are different for state registered institutions such as colleges & universities} is required to provide 'registration' data to the MoE who will then issue a document, which often has multiple attendees on it. A copy of this is then made, and attached to a letter from the school explaining why it is a copy, confirming the registration of the applicant, and furnishing the copies of the requisite licences so that a visa may be issued.
