This is going to be the most talked about, political(and musical) event for years, but nobody is interested yet.

Its great UBC is showing it,I thought we were going to miss out,but who really cares about the message Sir B.G. is trying to put across??

I'm trying to get Leo Sayer & The Bay City Rollers to do a concert to cancel my visa card debt :o

''This is going to be the most talked about, political(and musical) event for years, but nobody is interested yet.''

I disagree! I think that apart from the return of Pink Floyd this will soon be forgotten. There is no politics here either. Its a bunch of millionaires raising their profiles in the name of the poor.

All it is in real terms is a good chance for the chattering classes to feel that they are saving the planet for another 5 years. Geldof claims its about raising awarness about 3rd World debt. Well if anyone needs Geldof to tell them that the 3rd World is poor then they deserve no place in the Human Race.

Its a nice fluffy 'feel good about yourself' affair which in truth will change nothing just like Live Aid changed nothing.

The real root of the problem is not governments, multi nationals, or the legacy of colonisation but the fact that no one ever challenges the ineptitude of the charitable agencies to whom the trusting public pay millions to blindly each year.

Just what do they do with the money year in year out? Does anyone care?

Wow, this will be a long night. But a fantastic event! Hope UBC will show less red screens than usual :D

Heartily agree George :D I am looking around for somewhere with a big screen to watch this tonight- anyone know a venue??? it goes till 6a.m. tho...

Ok, now, there's a debate here and no one has really addressed it thus far-

This concert seems to have alot of people wondering if it's a charity event or what exactly? It appears to be an "awareness" event, to hilight the poor in debt laden Africa for example, in advance of the G8 meeting in Edinburgh next week.

The underlying mission appears to get Govts of the G8 developed countries to forgive the debts of 3rd world countries, then encourage the G8 to give billions more, all in the hopes of releasing the burden on the common citizens of 3rd world countries, so they may have an opportunity to advance without crushing debt preventing that advancement.

I'll probably get skewered here but I'll try a BASIC overview;

Ok, so where did this debt come from?

-Largely via Govt and financial institutions of the G8, to 3rd world Govt's, their financial institutions and various 3rd world causes.

Fine, what happened to the money?

-To a large extent, it was funelled thru the various 3rd world govt's agencies and their financial institutions etc, supposedly to enhance very worthy causes which most including myself would fully support- BUT largely was corrupted, siphoned off and ending up in the offshore bank accounts of cronies and insiders of said corrupt 3rd world Govts.

So, why do the common people of 3rd world countries who the money was intended BUT never saw this money now have to repay it in the form of taxes, price increases etc?

-Because the private "connected people" whom actually received the bulk of the siphoned loans/grants/aid etc, actually received it through the original recipient, the 3rd world Govt, or 3rd world financial institutions, thereby making that Govt (therefor it's citizens) responsible for repaying it.

Ok, why not trace which insiders and which Govt officials were involved in collusion in siphoning the funds and hold THEM individually responsible?

-Because THEY control the power in said corrupt 3rd world country and have a vested interest not to change things, why on earth would they- what's in it for them??? (keep yer mitts of MY mercedes pal;)

Well, why isn't this then an awareness concert to bring full pressure on these corrupt 3rd world Govts via a mass external (and hopefully internal) outcry??

-(sigh) I have no idea. I do know these Govts use every means available to keep their citizens focused on hating "the west" , when they should actually despise their own Govts for literally enslaving them...

Hey, it seems to work and the shiny new mercedes, offshore bank accounts, houses and estates all over the world keep on coming for the "connected". Meanwhile, their avg citizens are trying to live on less than a dollar a day, yet are responsible for repaying the cronies "private" debts and it's crushing them...

The other option is to send coalition after coalition in, to down these puppet regimes but we all know what that may bring... :D

Looking forward to a fantastic concert and hoping the "awareness" created is focused right where it should be-

on 3rd world corruption. :D:o

Giving it to the Governments will just see it stolen again.

I know a 'tycoon' who routinely steals aid money. I guess he's bought me many glasses of red wine with embexzzled funds.

3rd World elites aren't capable of managing their own countries, they never will be in our lifetimes. I almost feel like advocating re-colonization.

The concert is being re-run on CH21 over the nights of 11th - 15th at 2300 - 1am.

Anyone know if there were any surprise appearances? Only saw the first few hours.

Didn't seem the same without a Dylan or a Clapton.
