  1. 10 baht is the fixed price from the new bus station to the old one.

Look at the right hand corner of the terminal to see the small van waiting for passengers, when he has afew passengers he will leave.

Don't use the tuk tuk, as they charge over 100 baht for the same.

    and welcome to Chiang Rai.

    Thank you.

  2. ......................

Ok, thank you. Unusual to have horror for tv series :D

Just arrived and already a Thai tv fanatic? You will be delighted to know, that since the beginning of time there are horror tv series in this country.

..............a girl having shower and a green ghostly hand appeared behind her head..............

    :)

I have been a fan of Thai horror movies since some years already. :D

  3. You just see in tv????

    I have 120 channels here.

Please let us know which channel you are watching.

    :)

It's a Thai channel(still on now) with many advertisements breaking the show.

Just checked, and asked my wife.

Its a series on Thai channel 5.

She doesnt think it is any good.

However, as all other (or most) Thais, she loves a good horror movie.

    :D

  4. check out the southeast asia movie theatre project blog here (http://seatheater.blogspot.com/) and for Thai films (most of the stuff is more modern but there are some reviews of classic Thai films) at wise kwai's thai film blog (http://thaifilmjournal.blogspot.com/)

    I recommend:

Insii daeng (that is about to be remade) - with famous classic actor Mit Chaibancha

Muu Purn (With actor surapong chartrii)

    Salaween - also Surapong

Sia Die 2 - also with Surapong

and others I can't think of right now.

Most of the bigger DVD shops have a section with classic Thai films. A lot of rubbish in there but some good ones.

I have been searching the above mentioned movies from BKK and CM but none available. Heaps of Surapong's old movies but none of Mit Chaibancha.

In order to satisfy my need, I asked the staff if I must get at least one of Surapong's available movies, which one ?

He recommended "Pen Panarok". I bought it, is it good ?

  5. I am suprised no one mention the White Buddhist Temple !!

This is the only temple that is very different from others in Thailand and definitely should not be missed. Not having seen it as a tourist is like visited Bangkok without visiting the Grand Palace.

Basically CR is a boring place, but I like the location of the bus station which is right in the centre of town and the night market is also right there.

I must agree, the white temple (Wat Long Khun I believe?) needs to be seen.

I didn't find CR boring, although I wasn't in town long, I found it a charming little city, busy enough to blow the country cobwebs out, I liked the indoor market too (daytime) and the night bazaar was ok for a wander about, few food stalls and that, very enjoyable.

All depends what you're after, we went to a waterfall a few k's down the road from Wat Long Khun, couldn't tell you what it was called I'm afraid...I was taking directions from about 5 different Thai people all at once and just concentrating on not doing too many u-turns! but basicaslly turn left out of the Wat car park instead of right back towards CR.... after that it was a confusion of 'no not that left the other left' 'oh you mean right?' a few stops for food and many u-turns later we arrived in a beautiful park/waterfall area, it was about 1km walk up to the falls. Worth it if you like that sort of thing.

That most likely would have been Khun Korn Waterfall which is the tallest in this area.

Did you get to Black Village as well as the White Temple? Two beautifully juxtaposed venues on opposite sides of town and well worth seeing.

What is this Black Village ? Never heard of it. Near to White Temple ? I will be in CR soon.

  6. I tried the Somphet Jok and maybe I am not used to it, the porridge, probably cook with crushed rice grains, looks like starch, not a single sign of rice, just a few small meat balls, cost 25 baht, making it the highest profit margin food of 25 baht :)

I saw another shop just a few metres away from the DVD shop at Ton Payom with very impressive display of pork ingredients served in porridge too. Anyone tried it ? Is it nice ?

I went to the Sri Phum/ Prappoklao Rd junction looking for the famous soup noodle but again it's closed today, according to the songtheaw driver and he took me to another shop along the samphaeng market traffic night. I find it just normal but the soya bean stall opposite the road is very nice.

  7. Suthep Road left side, pass the Suandok temple garden for another 20 metres, opposite the Neurological Hospital.

Double restaurant, one is kind of green inside.

Very good are: 'macaroni kai' Macaroni Chicken, 'kao pad sapalot' Fried Rice/Pineapple/Chicken (rice indain style) and Tom Yam Kai !!!!!

    30 or 35 bht each.

The daytime chicken cart opposite AIA Languages Institute, Sunday market street has good pieces of fried chicken breast for 5 bht.

Thai Airways office has a DELICIOUS Puff 'n Pie bakery inside !!!!!!

I cannot find which restaurant opp the hospital as none of them has any English words

I saw some restaurants both before and after the 2 barber shops as you come from the old city direction, which is the right one ?

  8. Thansk alot for your replies.

I will try to check it out if I can find some time tomorrow night. If not, next trip.

4 staffs at the S&P cafe next to the Computer Mall spent 10 mins and could not come out with a common answer to its direction :)

Anyway, someone told me they don't only perform the types of songs I am looking for and he burn me a mp3 of Com Pee & Bird's songs, which should be able to fulfill my music appetite for these 2 nights. :D

  9. I just phone them. A young guy can speak applicable English.

Rental per movie is 60 Baht, or buy coupons of 200 Baht for 4 movies. Not cheap. To get 30Baht per movie, you need to buy 1500 baht worth of coupons. Name of the shop is DVD, Film and Books. Tell your driver to stop at "Gad Ton Pe Yom" along Th Suthep. Hope my pronounciation is correct :)

    Will check it later today.

Just went to this shop and spent nearly the whole afternnoon there.

This shop has more good movies than anywhere else in Asia, and not much of Hollywood craps !! The owner really has good taste for movies ! So is the male staff who speak English. I tested him to recommend me the good movies from each catalogue book and he is accurate !!

Nearly every movie that I could not buy elsewhere is found here.

Some correction to my previous post.

For first-timer, you need to pay a REg fee of 300 Baht and 3 movies coupon given, then you can choose from a few packages. I went for the 1500 Baht package which I get 75 movies.

Looks like I will be coming back to Chiang Mai more often than I expect. :D

Do you know if they carry TV series?

    Thanks.

Yes, but mostly newer series. I saw Rome, and many new names but no old series like Dallas, Poirot, Sherlock Homes, Columbo, etc.

The oldest is probably Twilight Zone, Bionic Woman, Twin Peaks.

Their French movies, Criterion Collections, and Chinese, Japanese movies are wide.

  11. Not sure how your laserdisc player was better than a DVD player.

The picture was just as good, but much easier to search for specific scenes when you lost your place. :)

I am with UG. When laserdisc first came out, I bought few hundred movies and they are all left in my store not. Buy back all those movies in pirated dvds to cut-loss now.

Unless it's a special movie that i wish to splurge on, I am contended with normal or copied dvds.

BTW, I am told Blu-ray discs cannot be copied to give the same resolutioin results, which is one of the reason why they came out, so pirated dvds will not have blu-ray quality. Is this correct ?

  12. There's a bar right on the northeast corner of the Old City (outside the moat) that had a small band playing Thai love songs last time I was there. Don't remember what it's called or whether that's a regular thing.

This will be very near to the Chinatown and a Vietnamese buffet restaurant, right ?

It's actually right outside the corner of the square, where the road is bending. Here's a link to a map.

Went to this place last night at 8.30 pm, I am told singing start at 9 pm but it did not until 9.45pm. I left after 4 songs as those are not what I am looking for. Business is good, nearly fully occupied even before the singing start. Drinks are cheap.

Someone advise me to go to another place name "ren bo lan". Anyone know where or what place is this is it ?
