  1. I just phone them. A young guy can speak applicable English.

Rental per movie is 60 Baht, or buy coupons of 200 Baht for 4 movies. Not cheap. To get 30Baht per movie, you need to buy 1500 baht worth of coupons. Name of the shop is DVD, Film and Books. Tell your driver to stop at "Gad Ton Pe Yom" along Th Suthep. Hope my pronounciation is correct :)

    Will check it later today.

  2. Has anyone been to this new Mall ? Is it interesting ?

I am told there is a new shopping mall there and during my last visit I visited a Mall that appears quite new too just opposite or beside the Wat Hualampong, is it the same one ?

Can I walk to this place from MBK or the River City Complex ?

Is there any thing interesting along Th Phayathai between MBK & Samyan MRT and along Th Si Phraya between River City Complex and Samyan MRT ?

  3. Hi,

Thank very much. I am more into foreign movies like Europeans, Japanese, etc. Will this Suthep shop have such movies ?

I must visit this shop but which junction is it ?

Is it at the Th Sirimankhalajan or Th Nimasnhaemin junction ? Or after the CMU ?

How far is it to walk from the moat ?

How do I describe this place to the songtheaw driver if it is too far to walk ?

  4. take western to the old town (you can walk around).

the eastern is longer and goes almost to the suburbs, you can see different environment, architucture.

take both of them - each leg is no more than 30 minutes. Great and cheap entertainment

Agreed. Try both, they each give a different experience. Do some planning on Google Maps beforehand, (if you're OCD like me), or just jump on and off at different interesting places. It's up to you!

When I first came to Bangkok, and I couldn't speak any Thai, I would bring along a business card of the building I was staying at. It had an address and directions in Thai on it. That gave me a great sense of freedom, as language stopped being a barrier, I could just jump on a bus, get completely lost, explore for an afternoon, and still get home at the end of the day.

I spent many of my early days here like that, in semi-retirement. It's enjoyable, but only for a couple of months, until you've seen everything. :)

If you want to be really courageous, try getting out to Buddha Monthon Park without using a taxi! It's a beautiful park on the outskirts of town, but it is really difficult to get to on the buses. It is possible however, and I think it has become easier with the Wongwian Yai extension, (there's your clue, I don't want to give it all away, it could be an adventure!), just don't forget to have a way to take a taxi home if you get lost! :D

(That might actually be a great idea for a new thread on here, get everyone to post an interesting place with no instructions on how to get there, then members who are new to Bangkok and looking for an adventure can take the challenge, and post their story. It would give new people a chance to figure out the area, and how to get around in it, and would probably create some great adventure stories!)

Sound intersting. Never know of such a park. Not difficult to reach, there are buses from Vistory Monument and Silom Road :D

I will go if I have enough time this trip.

I read about a proposal that Thailand may build the largest Buddhist Park or temple but that is quite recent; and someone told me about a Buddhist prayer hall that is the largest in the world which is already ready and in use.....wonder if they are related to this park ?

  5. Malaysia is 220V 50Hz same as Thailand, you'll need a plug adaptor to the BS 1363 style outlet used there (they actually have them in Homepro).

If you intend using kit long-term you should replace the plug with the correct one and ensure the correct fuse is installed in said plug.

    Otherwise, no problem :)

Thank you but i am poor in electriical knowledge.

Does it mean beside the plug adapter, I still need to change or do something to the fuse and plug if I buy something from Thailand to use in Malaysia ?

  6. Of the places you list, I would say that Central Phraram 3 is probably the most accessible by BTS. From Saphan Taksin Station, cross Charoen Krung Road. On the north side of Sathorn Road (westbound), there is a bus stop just a few metres west of the intersection. Board a # 77 bus: orange air.con version, red and cream ordinary version, or little green one. About 30 min. to Central Phraram 3.

To get to Central Rama III Mall, best thing is to take BTS to Chong Nonsi, and then either walk or take taxi down Narathiswas (long way) to Rachda, turn right and mall is about 1 km.

Going all the way to Saphan Taksin sounds crazy to me.

    TH

I did it this way because the OP sounds like a tourist, or new arrival, who presumably doesn't speak Thai, probably can't talk to taxi drivers very well etc. And, he specifically asked about bus service. From Chong Nonsi BTS Station, there is no direct bus to Central Phraram III.

Thank you to all of you again. Your responses have been very helpful.

Normally I try to take the BTS or local buses if I am not in a hurry. I enjoyed taking the local buses. It's a great way and slow enough to see places and people. I never have any difficulty with the Thais although all I can speak is Sawadee Krap, Kop Kun Krap and Tow Rai. They are always helpful. Only in Thailand I can find passengers who overheard and remember my destinations. When I am close, someone is bound to tell me it's the next stop. :)

Only when I am in a hurry, I will take a taxi. Problem with taxi is if you can't communicate with the driver, then big trouble, I cant decide where to get down then. In a bus, there are others to help.

BTW, is there any nice mall near to the subway line station ?

If I wish to explore 1 or 2 of the subway stops, which stops should I go ?

  7. I'm with Jack... I am afraid I won't be sharing any top food place tips because part of the reason I like them so much is that they have no (or few farang)... perfect

just go and try and experiment yourself, it's much more fun and rewarding that way!

Don't worry, trust me. I won't tell others about the places. I am a Asian Chinese and I won't bring other farangs along. Please....what are your conditions ?. :D

    haha :D

ok, there's this one place, just off the side of the road... lovely khao soi and great ice cream too... very cheap... you should try it! :)

Ok but where is it ? Have you forgotten to name and describe the place ?

Or are you just teasing ? :D

What is khao soi ? Thanks.

  9. Is there any thread or site that list the best or most popular of local food in Bangkok ?

I know of a street stall in Suriwongse not far from the night market outside a big office building selling stewed chicken and feet; but I am quite tired of eating the same supper every night.

I am told there are also famous stewed pork and chicken rice in Silom Rd, anyone know where is it ?

Anyone know which is the most famous local food stall/shop in Chinatown ?

Which is the best local stall/shop to eat:

    1) A type of mixed pork and pigs stuffs in a clear soup with some green vegetables

    2) Basil leaves fried with shrimps or other meat.

    3) Tom Yam soup(clear type).

    4) Rice with mutiple cooked dishes to select.

I will be grateful to give you a treat :) if anyone can recommend such food in convenient places around city centres.

  10. Thank you very much for all these wonderful replies. Are Thais or foreigners ? Looks like 2 days will not be enough for me this trip.

What food is Somphet Jok selling ?

Which place in CM is best for this soup ? It's a clear soup with some meats of pork and other pig's belongings with some green vegetables placed together in the soup, normally served with rice. This type of vege is seldom seen and not served in other Asian countries. I liked it very much from a shop near a lane very close to a night market near the moat, it's either north or south.

Can someone teach me how can I highlight part of another post like post#9 did ? That will be very easy to message with reference.

  11. Thank you so much. You guys are wonderful !! I wonder most of you are Thais or foreigners ?

I will definitely try it this trip. Just few more questions.

How is bobe market like ?

Can I take the ride from from the eastern end all the way to the western end(or the other way) in one ride ?

What time will the last boat start at either ends ?

Beside these route all mentioned above that pass Pratunam, is there any others in Bangokok ?

    Thanks again.

  12. Can someone please let me know which of these Malls can have direct buses, BTS or subways or nearest to Chinatown(near Wat Trimit/Riverside), Siam Square, Pratum, Silom or International Airport areas:

    Mall Ngamwangwan

    Mall Bangkhae

    Future Rangsit Part

Central Plaza Ratchada - Rama 3

    Mall Thapra

    Central Bangna

    Central Plaza Pinklao

Among all thses Malls, I have only been to Central Bangna which I find quite unusual to have more eating places than most malls.

Which of those listed above are larger than Central Bangna or nearer to city centre or any BTS stations ?

I will be very grateful if anyone can describe some speciality of the malls if not how to get there.

    Thank you.
