It's the school's responsibility to check on  foreigners' degrees.

Once again... where do you get this information from?  You talk through your teeth with no support to anything you are saying. There isn't a single school that 'has' to check a teacher's background and no, it isn't the school's responsibility to do so. This falls on the TCT when approving waivers and teacher licenses, and even they don't always do it.

Claire... stop talking gibberish some people might actually listen to what you are saying and believe it.

Bad and false advice can lead to trouble. I said it before... I never really paid attention to what you were saying but I think I might start to do so...

Not necessarily. Some agencies hire anybody, then create a teacher's profile for the school,  all with fancy degrees and other lies.

It's a vast market, and most of these guys from agencies do make big money.

Schools are often unaware that these teachers are neither holding a degree nor having any teaching experience.

    Anything to substantiate this?

Been working here for almost 20 years so I've seen quite a few schools in my years here... never saw a teacher from an agency make more than 30k in a school ... well sometimes 35k... Most of the time the schools skim off 10-15 k off the salary offered by the gvt and they don't even pay vacations.

I see you are very active in almost anything that has to do with teaching here on TV and much of it is less than accurate. I don't bother pointing it out, but it seems you are a new teacher here and maybe you should sit back and get some experience before making yourself seem knowledgeable about education in Thailand...

You get the answer to your question, then you don't like it cos it takes too long to sit in government hospitals to be serviced?

You don't want to work over Christmas knowing this is a budhist country?

I am with Puchooay on this one and was from the very start of your posts. You are simply not cut out for it.

Samui desperately needs the help. Was recently there. More than 80% of the hotels were closed.

Thailand needs courageous leadership. They don't have it. The army are major cowards. ANY person from ANY nation should be welcome starting tomorrow, if they are willing to subject themselves to a 14 day quarantine and pay excessive fees for that two week sentence. There is no downside or risk, and only upside for the nation. No begging from a local consulate should be required. That is utter nonsense. A covid free letter and a booking at an approved hotel. Nothing else. No insurance. No groveling.

Other than for economics I really don't get this attitude of opening the floodgates to a virus that spreads like wildfire. This virus spooks the hell outta me and I dunno if I speak for the silent majority or not, but I really am not for opening up any time soon. I get that businesses are suffering but in the back of my mind I can't help but visualize the hordes of zombies in the walking dead. As far as I am concerned this is just practice for what might be coming next and if it is worse than this we are in for a rude awakening.

The story behind "farang" is that the first westerner to ever visit Thailand was a person named Frank, pronounced by Thais farang, so ever since then all white westerners are referred to as Frank.

    Really?

I heard every explanation under the sun and by far yours is the one that got the best laugh outta me. Should have that added to the history books...

kindergarten children irrespective of manners must be allowed to be mischievous, the tolerance comes from the teachers who are clearly in the wrong here, manners, surely come later in life!! kids are playing and having fun as they should!????

I dont teach kindergarten cos it is the worst job in the school. I am a licensed teacher here and back home and no way would I go there. Your comment is that of ignorance. Children should be well mannered at any age. Today's kindergarten kids are born in most cases to the millenials who are entitled enough as it is. I do not approve of the actions of these teachers, but before saying that kids should be allowed to be mischievous maybe you should give teaching kindergarten a try. Maybe then you would retract your comment that borders on ignorance.

Hey bub... I answered your question better than any of the other answers you got from anyone else. Your trying to make yourself inyeresting here and trying to keep your thread going is obvious. Start another thread about your teaching wishes and whims rather than hijack your own thread to make it a monologue about you yourself and you

  9. Government is better than private if you pair it to a good hospital. it pays everything no questions asked. Private schools generally give ruby coverage which is squat and if you have any priors good luck being covered. Your thread is going sideways. Stick to your initial question. Your insecurities about the kinda job you can get don't belong here and to be honest if you are so insecure about your skills maybe teaching isn't for you.

Regarding ways to prevent violence by teachers, 79.80 per cent of respondents said school directors must pay attention to the recent case, 77.32 per cent said guidelines for recruiting teachers must be improved, and 72.31 per cent said teachers and students must be monitored closely.

100% should be paid to school admin that don't give a hoot and never walk around their school to see what is going on and who rather be in meetings with tea and cookies rather than doing their job and walking around regularly. If headmasters were walking around doing their jobs then the likelihood of such incidents occurring would be minimized.

    Sorry... above as below...

Start by taking care of admin and the good results will trickle down to the troops... Good teachers can become rogue and bad if they have no support from admin...

Do not misconstrue this comment as support for corporal punishment... violence begets violence... it has to stop somewhere and not only the teachers should be accountable... there will be a witch hunt of teachers and the admin will cower praying the storm blows over their heads and hoping their feathers are not ruffled...

  12. The problem here is that schools are in fact too lax in regards to discipline. -->No fail policy, when kids miss out on 20% attendance they don't get normal summer school where you actually learn ... they just come to school and linger around doing nothing, they can fight with each other without consequence, they can call their foreign teachers 'ai heea' and nothing happens...

The problem is an all or nothing attitude. When there eventually are consequences they are draconian and physical. I am against corporal punishment and I have been working in this system for almost 20 years. Whenever I start work in a school my first questions is whether there is a discipline policy. I ALWAYS get a dithery answer only to find out that after a week to a month that I have no support and that I am left to my own.

The truth is for all of you that have never worked as a teacher here is that most schools DO NOT support their teachers and that the upper admin in their Ivory tower can't be bothered to do anything other than take their tea money and give an impression that they are high up on the totem poll. The very few schools I have worked with that were supportive of their teachers and had a discipline policy were very nice to work for.

I usually give lunch time detention (kids have 15-20 minutes to eat and then must come to my class), or lines to deter bad behavior. Does this work? Generally not and funny enough is that I get harsh criticism from the Thai staff who actually whack the kids on their hands with rulers and believe it or not from foreign staff who generally actually do nothing except praise how different things are back home.

It is a sad state of affairs the education system in Thailand and unfortunately also back home. When I was a kid I was bullied in class and the teachers never bothered helping. Nowadays there is awareness to the consequences of bullying and some measures have been put into place to prevent this. However, it falls on the teachers and admin to implement it and make sure it is followed.

Do I support corporal punishment? NO...

Do I somewhat understand why some teachers do it? YES

As long as the education system world wide does not start to respect its teachers, implement and enforce discipline policies that teach consequences to make our children responsible citizens we will never see our world become a peaceful place. Personally I blame admin in schools for the failure of the education system. As long as nothing is done by the people in power we will continue to see a society where people like the Red Bull heir can get away with murder, a society where falang people in Thailand and African Americans, Hispanics and Asians and indigenous people are treated as second tier and third tier members of society.

This seems like a very badly worded article. I think these discounts are available to everyone, not just to Thais. It's just that the hotels are specifically targeting Thais now because of the lack of foreigners. Of course on top of these discounts Thais get the government subsidy as well that's not available to us but that's a different discussion.

Where did you read that... sorry... I never click the links to further my education... so can you enlighten me?

  14. Scary times ahead for teachers. Smells like a witch hunt is about to start. I am just glad I haven't been teaching for the last 1.5 year.

Despite the fact that their are abusive teachers out there... my heartfelt sympathy goes out to the ones who are actually trying to survive in this world of spoiled children who don't take 'no' for an answer.

i am 100 % sure mr barnes is totally without any fault..... right mr barnes ?

Mr Barnes should have the right to bring in as much beer as he wishes without having a corking fee... especially in these days where getting anyone to stay in one's hotel must be quite difficult indeed. On this one... 100% on Barne's side. If anyone tried to get me to pay a corking fee to fill my fridge in a hotel where I am staying they would get the middle finger salute. What's next? A corking fee for bottled water?

i think that the word "purged" is a problem for peace. "Purge" is something who always go for massive crimes without any justice idea, and many tragedy statement with, next, fascism evolution.

Which kind of leadership use "purge" in the human story time ? Let me tell you:

    verb
    1. 1.
rid (someone or something) of an unwanted quality, condition, or feeling.
    2.
remove (a group of people considered undesirable) from an organization or place in an abrupt or violent way.

    noun
    1. 1.
an abrupt or violent removal of a group of people.
      2.1
      a laxative.

I get what your saying ... in order to be politically correct...

That said I'll go with the rid definition of the verb and especially the one about 'laxative'...

But I do question whether these people would give up their power in a peaceful way.... I worked with quite a few of these people in power and the way it works in schools here is that if you are only a teacher and a farang at that.... you have no right to talk to the high and mighty in the school food chain. so seeing how these people see themselves as gods I am not sure that peace will work.

I did not initially use the word purge with violence in mind nor did I look it up in the dictionary to be sure I was being PC ... for me I was simply using it in a way that meant the same as purging a sewer line... metaphor intended.
