  1. I go to the Prom. because the prices although somewhat high are a lot less than the other two new malls. I also enjoy how easy it has become to find convenient parking there and the fact that it is not crowded. Good movie theater as well. I hope they find a way to stay open.

Really? Prices a lot less? where please tell !! Uniqlo, Rimping, Fuji, Sports World, etc have standard prices across all their branches in Chiang Mai, Wine Connection is more expensive because at Prom you are required to buy wine for at least 500 baht otherwise they charge for the glasses to drink it, which they do not at Nim City!!

Really? They actually charged you for the glass to drink you wine in their own place? That's just F#$%ed up dude.

  2. Unfortunately, I think that it's too late to do anything.

I noted that the OP mentioned, Duke, easy parking, movies, rimping.

Where are all the other places? Mall can't survive on those few shops. BUT I am, hate to admit it, guilty of the samething. Going there for very few things :eat, rimping, coffee(T&Ts)

  3. Yingluck's quiet and restrained approach to dealing with Yellows has outsmarted them and won the ultimate victory for truth, justice and freedom.

In the fullness of time, good always triumphs over evil.

Outsmart, yeah right, we can see you've been paying attention. That's always the most important thing for these people, truth, justice and the dash to freedom. Of course one mans definition of truth and justice doesn't always match the next mans. Most of us recognise the dash to freedom though.

Around here, In the fullness of time all previously banned members return home to roost, it's almost amazing how they stand out.

Outsmarrting? Please try to find another word to describe her approach. They sent her up country (chiangmai - Chiang Rai), just so that she won't have a chance to open her mouth and show people how dumb she is.

  4. So in the end, the government needs the public's fund to pay the farmers for rice bought into the program at ridiculously high price?

The rice that the gov't lack the ability to sell, or properly monitored in any case.

I am seriously wondering how the gov't came up with this (I know they probably did not think too much)

Rice bought @ 1X,XXX baht. Market price X,XXX baht. There's no way to make any money from this. The public would be needed to help to cover the shortfall anyway.

But seriously! right now it looks like the public will have to cover for all of the expense.

    What a mess

  5. "More important, if there were indeed true justice without any hidden agenda..."

According to the Electoral majority, there is none with respect to this NACC, plus the CC.

To say otherwise, is being blind to their historical record of politicized, one-sided decisions or simply parrotting PAD-Dem agenda.

Or at least that is what the UDD/RS's are telling me, and they make up the bulk of the electoral majority.

Given this NACC thing happening now in such a hurried fashion, and the inability of the anti-democratic coup mongers to achieve their goals, one is hard put to not connect the two and come up with a different conclusion than the Prime Minister. Unless of course, one is a PAD-Dem sympathizer.

That said, I note the headline speaks of a "rice scandal", when other's refer to it as an "Agricultural subsidy Program"....What is a scandal to some is a supportive program to others....Depending on which side of the political divide one comes from I guess....Have there been price support programs for rubber in the past, that were characterized as scandals?.....Just wondering.

Unfortunately these divergent views are not being hashed out in Parliament at the moment....Then voters could make up their own mind. For that reason, it will be interesting to see how the voters viewed this thing, when the current election is completed and tabulated.

True this is rather hurried, and the timing really dictate the true meaning of the charges as you said. To be honest, they should have done this last year, when the smell of rotting rice is beginning to waft across the country

But to call this rice buying program anything but a scandal is laughable, heck is it even a support program.

To be a support program, I imagine that the farmers would be getting something out of it, and by the look of things they aren't. I won't even class this as a subsidy program.

The money should have been from selling the rice bought from the farmers (at ridiculously high price), not begging the public for help. Even now, there are supposedly millions of tonnes of rice in warehouses sitting there, rotting away.

Price too low to sell? Well they weren't that high in the first place.

Price support for rubber farming? I though that was cleared up well before it became a problem.

  6. So by their own account the bidding is to buy the rice at less than market value. Maybe the caretaker gov does not care about the huge loss of taxpayers money as long as they win the support of the farmers again. The kicker is that the PTP and YL fully support this scheme still and if they continue in office they will continue this scheme at ANY COST!

It also makes me wonder how much rice being bought thru bidding will be sent back since it is almost certain a good portion of their stockpiles are rotten.

Sent from my GT-S5310 using Thaivisa Connect Thailand mobile app

But unfortunately it's a little too late, I think that they farmers have no trust left for this gov't. Also price of rice is way below the price the gov't have to pay the farmers. There will still be shortfalls in payment.

Release the rice too fast, you'll flood the market, causing price to drop, increasing the differences in payment yet again.

It's a no win situation for anybody

  7. If the Bank of Thailand had enacted fiscal measures to reduce the value of the Baht when finance minister Kittirat Na Ranong asked them to do so, Thai rice wouldn't be overpriced in the international market.

Devaluing a country's currency just to sell rice? With rice at 40% above market price, the Baht has to be at least 46 to US$1 to bring prices on par.

And what will become of the cost of living for everybody, farmers included?

Which sane country in the world devalues its currency for political reasons?

It was crazy enough that the gov't tried to bring up the price by holding out on rice sales, unfortunately that opened the door for India, Vietnam, etc to sell more rice.

And M_f think that devalue the currency is a good idea? Helping growth of Issan farmers? LMFAO

devaluation on the currency won't do a thing to help them. It'll actually make them poorer, 100baht = 75baht (in buying power). and the economy would tumble back to 1997 when the currency value hit rock bottom.

  8. This is all a bit fishy............ doesn't most of the beef sold here come from Australia ,NZ , Argentina etc.

A program on ABC Australia TV last night was saying that beef producers in Australia are currently not even covering their cost of producing animals

for slaughter due to the massive increase in grain feed and drought conditions in many areas. Farmers were getting as low as $3 a kg (90 baht) at market.

So why the shortage ? perhaps Rimping should spell out why.

Its not only beef the price of shrimp seems to have doubled in the last 6 months and that is local.

The farmers are out protesting in Bangkok. So no one to bring the cattle to be made into beef.

  9. Old rule for motorists: ATGATT (all the gear, all the time).

I flipped my Triumph over a couple years back in Spain. The bike just slid from under me in walking speed when breaking on a zebra. T-shirt, shorts, no gloves, but I had a helmet. Minimal damage to the bike (a couple of scratches, one broken signal), but I myself suffered from painful "asphalt rash" on both my knees, other thigh, hands and elbows and other shoulder. I would have avoided all of the pain if I just had my normal riding gear on.

    Motorcycle + shorts + t-shirt, never again.

Like Dogpoo I can't see it! Were you on a really steep hill?

I get what koo's saying - I went to Alicante a number of years ago to visit a friend and the roads there were constantly covered in a layer of dust that transformed Macadam's finest into something resembing a sheet of glass for riding on. Saw a few holiday makers go down at very low speeds because of the tyres just losing grip on the dust and down they went - of course all wearing shorts and tee's with the obvious resulting gravel rash...

I agree with the comments earlier about the kevlar jeans though...I took a tumble a few years ago wearing a pair of those Draggin Jeans...they were ripped apart by the time the dust had settled, but they did stop me from getting ripped up. I did take out the pads though (more comfortable that way...) so had a few more bruises than I otherwise might have had... I ride with similar jeans here thumbsup.gif

That was exactly what happened to me - sheets of glass as the streets are. It was early morning, so some morning moisture added to the mix. As I said, I was approaching a zebra at an intersection, going a bit downhill, when I saw a van approaching at high speed. I was literally riding walking speed, but breaked heavily to avoid collision, and the bike just slid from under me. It stopped within 2 meters and so did I, but that drag was enough for my skin with shorts and t-shirt. With any more speed i would have hit the van and probably would not be here to report the incident...

I know what you mean. Any painted surface is slick compare to the normal road surface. I almost did the similar thing a couple of days ago while braking on the zebra crossing. almost rear ended the pick up in front. And for those who says that I was going too fast ( I know there will be), I was crawling in first gear while riding the clutch. My lesson is to avoid the painted lines if I can, they're deadly.

  10. if you look at what a caddie does for a golf pro, he/she is pretty much in charge of the course. "walking" the yardages, laying out the shot suggestions for the golfer to hit. Even pick out clubs for the golfer to use before being asked to.

most caddies on the pro tour are pretty damn good themselves.

all caddies are golfers, but not all golfers are caddies.

Look at it this way, who is more important.

  11. "The decision of the majority Thais in an election must be respected and various organizations must use their power within the framework set by the Constitution."

Then can he accept the decisions made by the elections since then with "yllw" in power, when he was found guilty of various charges.

"his opponents had distorted the bill by saying it sought to whitewash him and provide an avenue for returning his seized assets"

Sure Mr.T, please look up the word Amnesty in the dictionary. If it's truly not intended then it's a heck of a bonus for you and your family.

Let's see who has the most to gain

    the opposition:

    1. conspiracy to murder charges: Not even in court yet, so they'll be cleanse of any wrong doing that they haven't even been found guilty off!!!

    2. airport shut down: OK they'll be cleanse of that, but they've already been punished and served jail time for that (how ever short). Dude, we've been in jail, wiping our slate clean isn't going to change that.

    Government side:

    1. Mr.T gets to come home, his slate clean, and potentially get his money back - WITHOUT spending a minute in jail. self impose exile in 5star hotels don't count as house arrest!

    2. Any government building burnt down during the RD uprising will be forgotten - don't think many have been charged for that

    3. World Trade Center arson - what arson? we've been cleansed.

    4. Family that lost members during the shooting - thanks for your help in the uprising. Sorry for your lose, it's was for a good cause.wai.gif

  12. Fusion food is customary for all cultures. However overall Thai food has remained pure. I think that this might be their experimental stage of development. However overall in my experience Thai people don't cook Thai food very well especially the venues that cater to tourists. The old women just aren't around anymore. I have pictures of grandma and all of her neighbors back in the 40's sitting together making nam priks together for their daily meals. Was a wonderful tradition similar to the western quilt making groups.

Modern cooks here are looking outward rather than inward for inspiration. Thai food can be stagnant only because it reached its height centuries ago and made little improvements over the past 100 years.

There are some young chefs doing some interesting things but overall they are just grasping at straws.

But to put things in perspective 20 years ago I made an apple pie when I was in Korea in the smaller city that I lived no one had ever had it. All of the Koreans at the dinner waited for one woman to eat, then they all tried some. However after her first bite she went back to the table and put a spoon full of Kimchi on top of it. I almost puked. They all thought that was the most amazing thing.

as Korean american as apple pie and kimchi

I know what you mean, about granmas sitting around and cooking up a storm. They don't pass on their knowledge ( at least 100% of the instructions) regarding food. Each family have their own little tricks to certain dishes that is disappearing fast. Sad really but not much we can do.

With fusion food, you really have to know what you're doing to make it work. And still there are something that SHOULD NOT be put together. I personally don't go for fusions, but I'll accept influences, like adding something to give it a touch of thainess, etc.

  13. LOS should take some lesson from Uncle Sam.

Look what's happening over there, with deserters, leak information concerning spying on other gov't.

    Didn't make them popular,

What's next, tapping phones? Maybe as people wouldn't use the social media anymore, and revert to using the traditional method.

These day, that's too easy with the creation of throw away phones.

  14. Single room apartment 30sq mtrs ................5500 baht + 2000 baht electricity (air con)

Thai food 3 meals a day -.............................150 baht day

Farang food 3 meals a day - ........................450 baht day .....600 baht per day (if your the type that can only eat chicken breast and are picky)

Transport scooter rental -..............................2000 baht month

    Fuel-..............................................................1000 baht month

    Internet - .......................................................1000 baht month

    Cell Phone -..................................................300 baht month

Alcohol-.........................................................1000 baht month (light drinker) 4000 baht (drink to get drunk)

Thai food @ 150/day? Not going to get you much, since a bowl of noodle and a O-liang is 60-70baht already.

Same as for Farang food 450/day = 150/meal. Not going to get you much at all. But is it POSSIBLE? YES

1000 baht on fuel for scooter, WOW that's a lot of riding. but still not an impossible figure.

It's kinda scary looking at the figures, since it doesn't include extra - clothing, reading materials, music, etc.

Now imaging working at minimum wage 300/day (before deductibles), and having to pay of debts.

    so it'll be 9000/month.

    Apartment (rat hole) - 2,000/mth

    food 150/day (I'm keeping your figure) = 4,500/mth

Fuel 750/mth (can be as low as 500 for some people)

cell/internet package 699/mth (can't do with out social media/ smart phones)

    TRUE TV 299

    Debt payment XXXX

That's only the minimum. Not including, tobacco, alcohol, shoppings (essential need items), laundry, etc
