"slavery" is IMHO too strong a word - as I understood from the report, most of the workers are scammed into working, i.e. brokers and transporters fabricate a bogus debt that the worker has to repay, but cannot, because it keeps growing. "exploitation" would be a more accurate word for describing the situation of most of the alleged slaves.
I was unable to find details about what keeps the exploited persons from simply running away, apart from believing the bullshit that's fed to them.
I hope the junta will correct the situation. Every foreigner should have a work permit and be in possession of his passport. Employers in breach of the Law should be punished harshly.
The Thai fishing industry absolutely does has slavery. It's not a strong word, it's the reality.

Good. It's time this stinking abomination was cleaned up.

You go hire a few Thais, then you will understand how damn lazy and greedy they are.So hire some Thais. No sympathy on this one.

Well it is Thailand, maybe it's time they dealt with it.

Ridiculous penalty. Obviously it was personal use, they should have slapped her with a stint in rehab and community service.

Nice try, was the agreement up for signing when the before-last government was running the show? No, it wasn't.
Well the last government didn't try to fix it.Thus proving International pressure from the public outrage works.
This is called pressure of popular public opinion. Are we learning yet ?
Or the one before that. You'd have thought this new one would have the gumption to take this opportunity to chip away at international perception the first time round - not make an embarrassing U turn when it's too late.
Place blame at feet of former (your hero) government that got tossed for being jerks. Thankyouverymuch.

Ok, so the big supermarket chains are getting concerned about the prawns that are fed fishmeal made from by-catch of slave-manned fishing boats.
What about the main catch????
I would think that these slave-crewed fishing boats' main source of income would be the primary catch, not the by-catch.
Are these supermarkets also buying fish from Thailand?
What is the market for the primary catch? That is where to sting them, not some secondary supply through broker-processor-merchant-prawn farmer-broker-Tesco.
It's the fishing side that needs to be cleaned up and frankly slavery and human trafficking are a fair description of what goes on. However, the guilt-by-association links to shrimp farming and CP is a bit of trade protectionism and environmental muck raking IMHO. If you've seen how the trash fish is generally handled off Thai boats it is not the sort of thing you want to use in shrimp feed. They don't use any old crap, the ingredients have to be reasonably fresh, and you won't be getting that off any old boat.
It's the government that should be cleaning up the fishing industry, since they assume responsibility for regulating it. The problems are clear cut and in your face at any fishing village. It's not like you're going to have problems finding undocumented migrant labour working boats at say Ban Nam Kem. You'll have problems finding a local.

Anyway it's a nice fairy tale and I especially like the part about the fish and the blending of the colours!

And maybe that's EXACTLY what's needed!
Yeah, but what good does it do when "Dad" has to return every 8 years to slap the kids around? They're never allowed to grow up.
Maybe they need a *real* hiding.

There is no political agenda here or bias. The Thai army is "scrutinizing" these funds.
Such funds need to be scrutinised. This is public money.

A few questions.
Is Tarit there for the DSI or is he now a gone burger?
Was the US cash handed over prior to the coup or is the US not really that unfriendly to Thailand?
At least the UN has the sensibility to see the wood among the trees in assisting and helping for improvement. Well done to them and the Junta for removing the deadwood from these organisations. Hopefully progress can be made on this issue which is a blight on Thailand.
This is a good example of how the US anti-coup rhetoric is just hot air - they continue to collaborate with the junta where it suits them.
Tarit got axed. No complaints were received.

I am sure cracking down on CP Is a top priority of the Generals.
I very much doubt that CP will be using such low quality, poorly handled trash fish in their feed formulations. While trafficking in Thai fisheries is rampant and appalling, linking it to CP or to shrimp farming merely by tossing the name in there is a pretty cheap shot on behalf of the author.

all great, but only if both sides would be held accountable... which is unlikely to happen I guess.
both sides?
afaik since 2006 there was only one side in government (except about 1 year). Of course the democrats should be accountable, too. Guess who caused the bigger havoc
You don't know much about recent history do you? Abhisit was PM from 2008 to 2011 and corruption was worse than ever, especially from his pals in the Bhum Jai Thai party. You can be sure the Democrats and their allies won't be held to account though.
The Bhum Jai is more allied to Taksin and are thieving..... anyway. All evidence is gone and the PTP did nothing when they could. Now only their crimes (recent) can be investigated. Maybe some crimes from the past. God this must hurt al the red lovers so much.
But I for one would not shed a tear for any Democrat caught for corruption. But because they were only short in power and had to give most of the profitable post to Bhum Jai (to form a coalition) there is not much to be found.
I really don't understand the red lovers, I mean PTP had all the chance in the world to go after Democrats if they were corrupt when they were in power. They did not because they could not find anything because not much love lost between the two parties.
But anyway I dont have a problem if they catch a few on my side.. because I dont consider any corrupt official a good guy.
PTP had no power to 'go after' Democrats. You don't much about the legal system do you? That would be the role of the National Anti-Corruption Commission and the courts, who are part of the same establishment as the Democrats and army.
But they did own the police and DSI and weren't above (accidentally) handing snack boxes full of cash to court officials. They were hardly toothless.

Little man has served his purpose and is now on his way....down.
Given the number of laws he's broken recently it would be hard to explain NOT locking him up. On the other hand I've never seen anyone important go to jail in Thailand.

Suthep doesn't need to take the fall for anything. We've been over this many times before. Under the SoE in place at the time, the PM is immune to prosecution.
And that small armed and willing element? I call bullshit. It was a very large and well armed element being sheltered willingly by everyone else. I call a spade a spade.
This has been gone over a number of times but it appears that you have not been listening. abhisit and suthep will only be immune from prosecution under the SoE IF the response to the perceived threat is seen to be proportionate.
I would imagine the imposition of live fire zones, the use of snipers and around 80 plus unarmed civilians having been shot dead may be stretching the definition of proportionate somewhat.
Oh give up the emotive garbage. Using snipers to identify and selectively remove threats (eg. people with guns) makes good sense given the circumstances. It's way, way better than having terrified infantry hose down the street with automatic weapons.
Here's another hard question for you: Big sign says "live fire zone". You going to go inside?

I don't think that admission of ordering the protesters to be shot in the legs below the knee will have done him any favours. People can still bleed out in less than 45 seconds if they lose a limb if there's a severed artery.
I could see in his defence if he stated that the ammunition to be used was not solid enough in which to cause loss of limb or life, not too familiar with the levels of buckshot, I do believe that the larger the number of pellets, the greater the spread??
The rest of the sentence which people have stopped quoting indicated that the troops were being fired on with automatic weapons at that time. I don't believe the below the knee nonsense, but I also doubt that they would wait for official permission to fire back. Who would?
