  1. Mate;I lived & worked (1 year contract) in Hua-Hin and I can tell you that this has got to be the most BORING place I have ever had the dubious 'pleasure' of having lived in !

It's much more expensive than here on the Eastern Seaboard and because there's really only one (1) main-street (Petchakaserm Road) it is often totally plugged-up, which adds to the annoyance factor.

I have a suggestion to make: go and check-out the area of Ban-Chang (not too far from Pattaya. I'l just bet you would fall right in love with that place !

Frankly I have lived in Thailand for almost 20 years and even though I see increasingly more things wrong with Pattaya; I also MUST live near the ocean (sail-fanatic !) Because of my job I have to live in Pattaya (or near it). I rarely visit beer-bars etc.,only when I get overseas visitors.

The simple fact is;you just can not beat the brilliant infrastructure which Pattaya has on offer.

So; go take a look at Ban-Chang,you can still do your major shopping in Pattaya.

    Cheers,

    JGK

  2. Thaifan2, more than enough ladies in CM if that's was a priority. So no, wrong guess. The reasons are the ones I gave.

Wedders; you appear to be a decent chap, with genuine concerns & questions.

I have been in Pattaya for almost 20 years now (I'm 1/2 Dutch & 1/2 Canadian)

Just PM me and I will give you some decent advice and elp you make the change more smoothly.

    Cheers,

    JaapFries

  3. yeah, sure "The spokesman said no one had lobbied the attorney-general not to seek the cancellation of the ruling of the Appeals Court."

just see who is the PM now. if the Attorney-General still want to keep his title as "Attorney-General" he better shut up. come on this is thialand. nothing new here.

see what the PM's brother used to do, Attorney-General sure will knows what to do next.

".....Bannapot was convicted for tax offences before the high court cited his good standing in society as grounds for leniency to suspend his term. He still had to pay Bt100,000 in fines."

    What good standing?

Just shows again, very clearly, rules for the well connected, and different rules for the surfs.

    The phrase "Travesty-Of-Justice" jumps to mind, doesn't it ? ? ?

  4. Thank you Hedonist for bringing back memories, all but smell it lol. I have seen it in Bangkok, will try & remember where.

Wauw; this is actually an amazing phenomena; if you realize that a lot ofour "memories" are triggered by one of our most astute senses: our smell !

The very moment I saw where you wrote "Old-Spice"; two things instantly happenned to me: (1) In my mind's eye,I could see that typical white little bottle sitting on my Dad's dresser (since EVER I can remember !) and (2) The smellof the stuff, after my Dad came out of the bathroom in the morning.

I will be looking fr a bottle of the stuff myself, just so I can recall those happy years growing-up and in reverence to my dad . . . .

    Thanks for the post !

    Cheers

  5. She is not allowed to work without a work permit and is curently breaking th law and could be arrrested, prosecuted, jailed and deported. It carries a jail term of up to 5 years. That is why immirgation takes it seriously.

A jailsentence is not that likely, but if immigration or labour raids the hotel and find out she is working without a work permit she will be in serious trouble.

    Totally and 100% correct !

Her only option is to stop working there NOW and go to the beach instead. I mean she leaving Thailand < 1 week anyay; whytake this very grave risk !

  6. Hi there Mr. House Builder:

I understand what you're looking for - a word of caution: don't ever buy timber doors (be it Teak or whatever) which have NOT be Kiln-Dried,for if you do, these doors (obviously being exposed to weather (outside) and air-conditiong, causing very dry air, (inside)!

If you want some advice, just PM me and I'll see if I can steer you in the right direction, okay ?

  7. You'll never know unless you try.

Ask yourself this... Is it likely that you'll forever kick yourself it you don't pursue this?

There are a lot of sour sceptics on this forum who assume a lot of girls who are are not financially independent are hookers. The same crowd might also suggest its not you who this girl is interest in, its your wallet... yadda yadda yadda, the same old bar stool paranoid diatribe.. Thai's are not to be trusted, you'll never win against a Thai, all Thai's want from Westerners is money.... These people rarely have any genuine Thai friends and live in what is commonly now called a 'farang Ghetto' and experience little outside of barstool life but will continue to argue that they know Thailand better than most. They don’t but can’t be convinced of such because they are unable to comprehend that they don’t know what they don’t know !

Are you and this girl of similar ages? i.e. are you less than 10 years older? Many will say age is not important. For the girls I have met in any country it is. I therefore have to assume that for those girls to whom age isn't an important factor financial security is higher up on their agenda.

The best advice I can offer:

Do not change your plans for this girl. i.e. IF you were going to move to Thailand anyway, then fair enough. But be very careful if you are going to give up everything at home because you are being emotionally influenced.

IF you are going to move here anyway then why not give things a chance?. You do not want to risk riding the emotional roller coaster, but unfortunately you might have to until both you and this girl learn more about each other.

There is nothing wrong with hoping for the best if you make sure your eyes are wide open when entering into this relationship. I see nothing wrong with this girl being so busy, many girls are responsible enough to work hard for their families.

It is however also true that many girls are in a relationship for the wrong reasons, only you can decide this after spending time with this girl. But remember, she might be more attracted to you because of the perceived wealth foreigners may possess, but don’t you also get the benefits of her beauty?

You already know if you are being played – The thing to remember is not to let your emotions overwhelm your thoughts, don’t pull the wool over your own eyes and trust your instincts.

    Additional Note:

This girl is working long hours because she needs to.

You met her at her work.

If a more serious relationship was to develop are you going to continue to meet her in the pool bar? OR would you expect / ask her to not work is this sort of environment?

IF you expect her not to work in this environment would you provide her with an alternative means of income? How would you feel if you had to do that?

Well now: "Richard_Smith237" - finally a voice who makes more sense than all the previous posters before him ! I fully endorse your 'take' on the matter and I applaud you for your time & effort to stick it on paper.

I'm saying this for a reason:

I have live/worked in Thailand for almost 20 years now and I would like to make a distinction between 2 major divisions when it comes to Farang living here:

    1. Those superficial types who hang around the bar-scene on a virtually daily basis.

    2. Those who are making a genuine effort with regards to "living" in Thailand; trying to understand AND respect the culture.

Let's face it; you wouldn't ask the advice of a typical bar-stool-hugger in your home-country, would you ? ? - Well; most of the cynical and nonsensical responses here are from guys who you would not ever want to associate with back home; why should you in Thailand ? !

During my 20 years here, I have met plenty of decent Farang who have met decent Thai girls and who are living very decent and loving & fulfilling lives.

All those dramatic stories about "money" and demands made upon you, either directly or indirectly: ludicrous ! !

I have been together with my Thai wife now for 18.5 years and eventhough this is my third marriage (earlier in Canada & NZ) - this is by far the very best thing that's ever happened to me ! ! . . . . . Just think:I wake-up in the morning and look at the pillow besides me and realize that I AM the luckiest man alive . . . . hat's after 18 1/2 years together ! ! !

Oh yeah; and my beautiful girl is now about 1 1/2 years away from receiving her Law-Degree (that's after she already received a Bachelors degree about 6 months ago.

I am certainly not rich man; but I am a hardworking man who's honest and who NEVER cheats on his wife. I do respect her and I'ld do anything for her !

I'll let yo in on another little secret: most decent Thai girls aren't looking for mountains of gold: the one thing they really look for is a guy who is faithful to them and to them only !

If you are the type of man who values moral standards; doesn't enjoy hanging around Go-Go Bars, eying-up the pole-dancers while getting drunk; then - my friend: take this girl seriously and go for it!

Oh; and there's one other sure way to discover if the girl of your desires is 'cut-from-the-right-mold', but you'll have to PM me for that info., okay ?

  8. What a laugh: the current "Deputy PM" has a very shady past himself;remember this:

    -------------------------------------------------------

    2004

    Thai politician's son acquitted

Duangchalerm was flanked by his father as he left court

A Thai court has acquitted a high-profile politician's son of murdering a policeman who was shot during a nightclub brawl.

Duangchalerm Yoobamrung, who is the son of the former justice minister, Chalerm Yoobamrung, was cleared of all charges.

The court ruled that the prosecution had presented insufficient evidence and conflicting witness testimonies.

The case enthralled the nation and was seen as a test of whether the rich and powerful could evade justice.

Correspondents say the verdict is likely to cause public anger.

    Manhunt

Four other co-defendants, including Duangchalerm's elder brother, Wanchalerm, were also acquitted of charges related to the shooting.

But the court sentenced Wanchalerm to a one-month suspended jail term and a 1,000 baht ($25) fine for assaulting a security official.

The shooting took place in the favourite haunt of the MP's three playboy sons and their friends, after one man trod on another's foot and a brawl ensued.

The defendant disappeared after the shooting, sparking one of Thailand's biggest manhunts in years.

    Public scandal

Duangchalerm was charged in his absence, in 2001, with shooting police sergeant Suvichai Rodvimut in the head at point blank range while other men held him down.

He surrendered himself to the Thai embassy in Malaysia after six months in hiding.

The scandal surrounding the incident caused Duangchalerm's father, a veteran politician, to lose his job as the deputy leader of the New Aspiration Party, which is a member of the ruling coalition.

Chalerm Yoobamrung supported his son throughout the case and even launched a magazine, to counter what he called biased media coverage.

After the verdict he said: "I respect the court judgement and will have my son ordained to be a monk for two months."

Enrolling as a monk for a brief period of time is a common practice for men in Thailand.

    You go figure . . . . .

    :D:D:D

  9. ahah... i will try with Pavarotti...

anyway I am the only long term rental there... dam_n it!

Often in Thailand, it is not WHAT you know, but WHO you know.

Are you acquainted with any Thais-in-High-Places ?

If you are, perhaps they can help you, before you murder those very irritating and totally inconsiderate youngsters ? ?

Failing that;try hiring a very big bouncer (look around town) to have a 'quiet word' in their ears ?

I really feel for you and hope you can somehow resolve this problem.

    Sweet dreams . . . . .

  10. When I read this story,I thought "Yea; I know this guy", but then later on, when the poster wrote that this chap lives a bit far out of town, I realized that I did NOT know this guy, but a diferent chap who's called Khun Sahk.

He, also, is a ery skilled and clever, conscientious mechanical genius, who works out of his work-shop/garage on Threppasit Road. About half-way between Sukhumvit <> Thepraya Road, on the South-Side of Threppasit Road. The sign over his shop reads: "Sak-Garage".

He also worked overseas for many ears, is fluent in English and Hebrew.

I can highly recommend this man

    Cheers

  11. i just faced an idiot farang at the classy bar last night, he though i was a theif, stole his blackberry. and he tried to investigate my own property. and i let him. that's it

    better?

Dear Anilicious: I am convinced that you ARE "anilicious", but in future be very careful when using the word ('private' or 'privates') because when you write: ". . .or thank you that i let you break into my private ?" this could easily be mistaken for "Statutory Rape", okay ?

When a person talks about "his privates" he is directly referring to his "sexual organs".Just thought you ought to know, lest this could get you into serious problems.

Other than that, I reckon your English is one helluva-lot better than my Thai ! !

    Cheers,

    :jap:

  12. Hi; you DO need a very strong and reputable lawyer to jump into this matter quickly and thoroughly.

If you PM me I'll introduce you to one such man who is extremely well connected in the highest echelons of Thai Society (and this will prove crucial ! !).

    Don't delay; get active NOW ! !

    Cheers,

  13. "If the renegade drivers could not be controlled, European embassies might be forced to issue a travel advisory warning tourists not to use tuk-tuks in Phuket, Ambassador Johannes Peterlik said."

PLEASE DO IT !!!! Now we are talking. Local authorities will do nothing about the problem, that is 100% sure.

I have lived very safely & happily in PATTAYA for 19 years. I had to visit Phuket, last week, on business and I was very glad to be flying out of there again, after 3 days.

Brilliant Marinas; Terrific Restaurants (9th Floor: WAUW ! !); but the entire undertone (Patong-Beach area) I found very sub-standard and even 'un-pleasant'!

Apart from all that; the prices people charge for tings like Coffee & American Breakfast are ludicrous ! ! I like Pattaya and I am very happy to have come home again ! !

PS: Before you 'anti-Ptty-ers' start: one does not HAVE to go to Walking-Streets; Sois 6; 7 and/or 8.

    Heck; We even have a Vineyard >15 minutes drive from Pattaya . . . . .

    :jap:

  14. I don't know why they want to go with the royal pardon.

Change the constitution put in an amnesties for everyone, red, yellow and Thaksin and sell it as the big step for uniting Thai people.

At all the media put red polit commissar who ensure honest reports. Additional peoples courts should be founded which takes political cases. Like the punishment of judges who undermines peaceful development of the nation.

For safety on the streets I would found, additional to the police, a peoples police which are accompanied with a red judge to decide the punishment.

    Surely a certain recipe for another Coup-d'Etat ! !

  15. No worries, mate: we just went through a little exercise for a cousin of ours, who moved to the States 22 (Twenty-Two) years ago . . . . . he came back; went to the bank (Bangkok-Bank) and wished to update her "Book". Well; it took 4 books, since she had made regular deposits (through my wife) into that account over the years. Final balance was well in excess of 1.5 mil Bht.

While I was there,I asked about "account-expiry" and was told that as long that it is obviously an "active" account,no bankin the Kingdom has the legal right to terminate anything.

  16. What a well written piece: you should perhaps hire someone to do the B-Battle on your behalf and then you should/could devote your time to writing ? ?

This would almost certainly prevent the skin-irritations.

I have had this B-Battle experience many times myself and hence I can fully relate to your story.

Seriously; as one well-intended poster suggested: use "hydro-cortisone creme": well I reckon that you should abstain from anything containing "cortisone"; this is a bit like 'throwing away the baby with the bath-water': extremely dangerous stuff (just google it and shudder !!).

Perhaps you ought to try the advice of my old Canadian Grandma: take a hot bath, in which you have dissolved a small packet of Baking-Soda. This instantly relieves most skin irritations. After that; smear the famous (and abundantly available) Aloe-Vera slimy-juice all over your body and, voila ! - you will feel like a re-born king ! ! !

Good luck, friend ! ! (and I don't have to tell you to smell the roses; since you're into Bougainvillea ! ! ha, ha, ha!)

    :jap:

  17. "While acknowledging that the vast majority of tourists enjoy incident-free holidays in Phuket, he went on to raise the issue of a new “motorbike scam” being reported.

In this newest way to cheat tourists, unscrupulous operators rent out motorbikes to foreign tourists and then arrange for companions to steal them overnight, he said.

The foreigners are then forced to pay the price of a brand-new motorbike, even if the stolen vehicle was old, he added."

This scam is not new, it's been going on for many years. Maybe it's on the rise in Phuket. I always ask if the fee includes insurance before I rent.

That's been going on for many years. About 8 years ago one of my neighbours had the owner of the bike he rented call round to his home early morning and advised him the bike was stolen and he needed to pay for it. Trouble was that he did not even know the bike was missing, not made any report. He thought it was still parked outside his house where he parked it the night before. The owner was really caught off guard, realised he had jumped the gun, but still persisted on full payment. My neighbour told him to get lost. Not sure how that ended, but I know that he left Phuket a few months later.

Maybe a few 'sting-operations' would be helpful here ? ? It wouldn't cost a lot of money and you would have "instant-results" and lock-up these buggars ! ! !

  18. Hi; depending on the "season" the ticket-prices will vary, slightly.

In fact; I am scheduled to do this very trip today.

    Cost for the return-flight (Pattaya>Samui>Phuket) is Bt.6,000.-

It is cheaper to book (credit card no problem)through local Travel Agent in Pattaya.

If you want the full details, just PM me any time.
