  1. What a load of dross. I went to Phuket in 1991, and the sex shows were alive and well there then. Now, there are even more. Phuket is a steaming turd in the Andaman, and anyone that has spent anytime there knows that Patong is no different than Pattaya. It's a shame, as there are some nice spots there, but most of the comments by the authorities are just usual BS.

Same here, just another headline for the uneducated masses.

  2. It is a strange story, and probably unlikely that the BIB got anywhere with investigating it. Thankfully nothing happened, but it is worrying.

Do the BIB get anywhere with anything that does not pay them money or get their picture in the newspaper and on television? The only thing about the BIB and this government that is transparent is their ability hide in their air conditioned offices and talk. Just talk. Safety!!! Only if you're willing to provide it for yourselves.

  3. IF Thailand ever writes and submits a report it ought to be a hilarious read i.e. no facts/ hopes/ and maybe a stated intention to become the Hub of human rights/ anti trafficking. Oh and I wouldn't be shocked if the November deadline is turned in in Feb. if at all. Seriously when has Thailand ever done anything anywhere OTHER than talk talk talk????

Agreed! If a report sounds like the PTP politicians speak. We urge, we hope, we suggest, are these the words of people that want to enforce laws and treaties that they are involved in? I for one, urge, suggest, and hope the PTP will stop talking about anything and do something about anything that has to do with the needs of the people of Thailand they Speak so highly of.

  4. The blame lies squarely and irrefutably at the feet of this Government who have consistently shown that they are totally incapable of the management of this country and lacking in ability and integrity to perform even the most menial acts with any degree of constructive professionalism and they routinely plunder the coffers of the country for inane and idiotic schemes and personal gain.

What to me defies logic is the fact that they still garner support from a public that must have their head in the sand.

  5. "The Transport Ministry is keen on enforcing the law..............."

I find this rather odd in a country where law enforcement is a pick and choose occupation.

How will this law be enforced? By roadside stop-checks?

Thais have to learn the benefits of seat belts. Some drivers may refuse to wear them as it may impede their FTS (flee the scene) ability. Anyway the intention is well meant, just hope they follow up and maintain pressure on the van drivers.

One must suppose that this law, like Not using cellphone while driving, Helmets for motorcycles, driving on the wrong side of the road and many more will just be ignored until you get to a checkpoint and then foreigners will be fined.

  6. This annoys me. Keep Bangkok dry but Xxxx everyone else in Thailand? Open the sluice gates and let the water go to the sea, that is the what it is supposed to do. Oh well, people will be laughing in about 50 years when most of Bangkok will be under water and their will be a new capital, most likely in Issan and then no one will give a Xxxx about Bangkok! Venice of the east..........well look at Venice now!

Flood BKK? Excuse me, it doesn't make sense no matter how I look at it.

Most of Thai rural houses are on the sticks, just like the one in the picture. The guy (on the picture) standing in a knee deep water, technically he's flooded, in reality - not so. Would it make anything better if the gates are opened, BKK gets flooded and water level around the guy's house drops in half, even ankle deep? He's still technically going to be flooded with his house sitting up on the stick, while Bangkokians would have to move their things up to the 2nd floor (those that have 2 floors).

I know the picture doesn't represent the whole of rural Thailand, not everyone has their houses built this way and flood water depth can vary, but flooding BKK is still not an answer. There are a lot more than 53825 households in BKK that will get affected just so those affected households mentioned in the OP can have a little less water around them?

Opening the gates will not drain all the flood waters in one quick WHOOOSH and out to the sea, it takes time and I'm sure the flooded planes were getting flooded in the past way before BKK with the flood gates was built...

Yup, that's the way everybody in Bangkok looks at it.

  7. PIPE CRACKS

Repairs to damaged water pipe on Ratchaprarop Road underway

    The Nation

BANGKOK: -- The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is draining water from a water channel on Bangkok's Ratchaprarop Road following damage caused by a backhoe to a section of a tap water pipe near the Makkasan Intersection Wednesday morning. The incident also caused a suspension of tap water in the area.

With the road and nearby commercial buildings under 30 cm of water, traffic backed up severely during the morning rush hour. The BMA drainage office urged the Metropolitan Waterworks Authority to repair the pipe and dispatched officials to drain water via Bueng Makkasan and to warn pedestrians away from the open drainage holes.

Ratchathewi district director Laksana Rojthamrong said the Metropolitan Electricity Authority was drilling in the area as it prepared to lay electric wires underground when the accident happened. At press time, officials had managed to stop the water but were advising motorists to avoid the area and recommending that residents move their belongings to higher ground.

Eating fried bugs could be fatal, Thai Health Dept warns
Started by webfact, 38 minutes ago

To eat or not to eat, that is the question.

You beat me to it. Several months ago they told us to eat bugs for protein. Now, don't eat bugs. TIT!

  9. bring in the pumps that Thaksin bought for us in Korea.

I always wondered what happened to those famous pumps....... Media in the western world would have had

a field day with that story. Here it just quietly faded away with no followup by the Thai media whatsoever.

In the real world, follow up is a critical part of any story ,principally to show resolution or to fix blame.

Here that does not exist, since it seems no here is really to blame for anything....

Follow up news? You must be kidding. Here it's all about the headline and the cherished Photo Op. End of story.

  10. " I frankly admit i don't know what I am supposed to be doing " is probably the most honest and acurate thing anyone connected to this government has ever said.

A cynical person might conclude that a sub-committee is merely a ploy to give the impression of progress.

    20 sub-committees is unbelievable.

A strong leader would be able to force the required effect from each committee. With the current government setup I can fully understand how a committee would find it difficult to see its role.

Strong leadership, clear objectives and a sub-committee, or any body come to that, would be able to achieve something.

I am sure the results from the sub-committees are already known. All that is needed is a bit of time to give the impression that they performed their role thoroughly to get the answer. "Sign here please, Khun Sub-Committee Chairman. Leave the date blank, we'll fill that in later".

    Then call my Cynical!!!

  11. Personal integrity. It's one of the few things we have control over. All the rest is subject to the whims and caprices of the world. Without it. We have no friends and even family will desert you in the end. Money, property and the rest of the material stuff is nice, but ultimately unimportant in living a good life. I spent a lifetime dealing with people who sought their identity and well being through their possessions. Most were not very happy campers. Only a few were genuinely happy and they all were people of integrity and knew it wasn't their "stuff" that mattered, but their human relationships.

I have also found that things go much better when you do not take yourself too seriously.

  12. I live in Jomtien (virtually Pattaya) and, frankly, I am happy to stay there. In the six years i have lived in Thailand I have lived 3 of them here. I have travelled all over Thailand and this area suits me down to the ground. If I never travel again it will be too soon.

Unfortunately my work requires that I am abroad at least one week in four. But as for holidays I can get pretty much everything i want around here. It is, in my opinion, not better to travel than arrive.

But then I don't think I know everything about Thailand or Thai's. In fact I honestly believe the longer I am here the less I understand.

Same for me. 25 years. I second your comment.

  13. Can some of the expats who've been here a long time, venture an opinion - are things getting worse or has it always been like this?

15 years ago it wasn't so bad. Yeah some corruption at the top, but not like now where everybody with a badge or a title is corrupt. And then the Sin Clan decided to go from buying politicians to being politicians, and it's gotten worse every day since then, IMHO.
