  1. Thai passports only appear to be low cost compared to the UK passports.

You have to factor in labour costs per hour and the difference between the two countries costings. It is relative.

So why does a single employee at the Brit Embassy have to be accommodated in a 3 bedroom flat on Sukhumvit at a cost of 150,000 Baht?

That's nothing to do with relative costing of the 2 countries.

The cost of producing the passport, processing the information and the labour rates ( civil/public servant salaries)

Yes one would agree just to have a document witnessed at your own Embassy/Consulate no charge should be levied. Formal notarisation, yes a charge is levied.

  2. A Statutory Declaration must be witnessed by a J.P or an accredited person who is authorised to witness documents.

The person who is signing the document must provide ID.

The JP asks the person who is to sign two questions, One, does he know the contents of the document and the statement in it are true, and,

Two, does he know the penalties for giving a false statement. (They fall under the Criminal Code).

He must answer yes to both if the signature is to be witnessed.

The JP then signs and enters his name along with the place, and date.

The document is then stamped with the JP number. And other attachments are signed and stamped.

The Statutory Declaration is now a legal document.

The above applies in Australia, most common law countries the procedures would be similiar.

  3. When documents have to be used in a foreign country are generally required to be notarised.

Notarised documents are generally have an embossed seal attached and are done by an accredited solicitor (lawyer). Notarisation can also be done by the Foreign affairs section of an Embassy.

That is correct, and the normal price I pay on behalf of friends etc is 5/600bt. Not all Lawyers are authorised to Notarise documents -though some may tell you otherwise!

Or, you can be a street cowboy and get some bloke on a bus to do it for £40 - perfectly legit mate.

It would not be a legal document.

  4. When documents have to be used in a foreign country are generally required to be notarised.

Uk would be similiar to Australia. Notarising documents in Australia costs between $60 and $100.

Witnessing a Statutory Declaration can be done by a J.P or a person with the required qualifications. There is no charge for this service.

However, witnessing a document (to be used in Thailand) at the Australian Embassy, (Consular Division) costs $18 to $20. However this charge may be waived if the document is to be used in Australia only.

Notarised documents are generally have an embossed seal attached and are done by an accredited solicitor (lawyer). Notarisation can also be done by the Foreign affairs section of an Embassy.

  5. The correct name is a weatherproof enclosure (box) with clear lid. Polycarbonite with a removable metal plate for the mounting of equipment. IP56 rated minimum. Cables should be terminated in nylon glands.

You could try Schnieder or any large electrical wholesaler for the electrical industry.

Any switches mounted externally of the enclosure should be weatherproof IP56 rating.

  6. In Germany between 1933 and 1945 the "final solution" policies for the Jews and Gypsies (the Roma) were based on their race, ie, they were today seen as racist.

Terrorist incidents due to Moslem extremists, ie WTO, Bali, Spain and London were culturally based they were not based on race, they were not racist. A Moslem can be white, brown or black and he could be any nationality. They are based on culture.

eg, " Islamic culture is incompatable with Western democratic values". is not racist.

But one might add that betwen 1933 and 1945 "Christian" was a race.

  7. Main Switch 63A minimum

    Lighting circuits 10A minimum

    Power (socket outlets) 20A.

All socket outlets protected by RCDs.

DIN rail loadcentres have 19mm modules.

Loadcentres may be sheet metal or polycarbonate.

Loadcentres should be supplied with 2 neutral links and an earth bar.

Loadcentre enclosure if metal must be earthed.

  8. And what are you fishing for .

One was wondering if any TV members had seen this film in the last 46 years and their comments, it certainly had a political message at the time.

Was it ever shown in Thailand?

  9. On Australian ABC2-TV the film "The Ugly American" which had as one of the principle actors Marlon Brando. who represented the US Ambassador to (Sxxxx) as Thailand was renamed.

Set in Thailand and made by Columbia Pictures in 1963. Thailand was given a fictitious name and the "Freedom Road" as it was known in the film was mentioned as part of the US Aid package which was to promote democracy, otherwise the communists, ie,USSR and China would move in. Featured a couple of assinations, and in the parting scene shows the Ambassador ( Marlon Brando) talking on a black and white TV which is then switched off.

    (The End).

To me it looked liked a US propaganda film showing what could happen to Thailand during the cold war and the average punter in the US could not care less.

I had heard of the "Ugly American" a book based on foreign policy in SE Asia but this was the first time one had seen the film.

The film also showed a TWA Boeing 707. Signage was in Thai script and English.

  10. Whatever some may think, the title of this post is incorrect. If Tommy McAuley is from Belfast (and born there) he's a UK citizen from Northern Ireland, not an Irishman.

Apologies if I was mistaken in my terms. :wai:

My British-born grandmother always used to call any man from anywhere in Ireland, an Irishman.

Granted she was born in 1892.

What would be an appropriate term for this millennium that the mods could change it to? (preferably something more precise and palatable than "UK citizen")

He holds an Irish passport so therefor the post is actually correct

If he was from Northern Ireland he would be Anglo Irish, from Eire he would be just Irish.

  11. Max demand 32A. Upgrade the metering to 15/45A. 45A is the max continuous rating of the meter.

    Consumers mains minimum, 10sqmm PVC/PVC twin or 2 x 10sqmm PVC/PVC single core cables.

32A RCBO as the main switch.

A minimum of 3 circuits, 1 x10A lighting and 2 x 20A for socket outlets. All socket outlets to be earthed.

  12. Max demand 32A supply single phase 2 wire.

You could use 2core 10sqmm pvc/pvc (sheathed) cable 75C. 16sqmm is recomended. Service fuses are not always used in Thailand, and they are there for short circuit protection and a point from which to disconnect the electrical installation.

Conduit should be 32mm heavy duty buried to a minimum of 500mm in trafficable areas. It would be recommended that a printed warning tape is buried at a depth of about 300mm from the surface.

    Copper conductors should be used.

3% voltage drop has been use in this calculation.

  13. As far as is known one is within his or her legal rights ( it is not illegal ) to practice racism or discrimination in Thailand. There is no laws or legislation prohibiting it.

If there are such laws or legislation in Thailand, please post them here.

In Western countries there is legislation.

  14. In some countries it pays to be legally married if one is with a female.

De jure marriage is the only form of marriage that is legally recognised. Defacto, partner, significant other ( means you have more than one) GF, TGF, mistress, mai noi. These are not legally recognised.

  15. I don't get the fuss.

If this was Australia NZ US or the UK, there would be a film crew there to maximise the emotion and stress and then they'd package into a show called 'Border Security - keeping the nation safe" broadcast at Primetime.

Which gets me thinking, plenty of ammo to do one of those shows in Thailand....

And the obvious message is clear, observe quarantine regulations , do not carry drugs and declare all financial instruments ( money etc) and have a legitimate reason for your stay. Otherwise suffer the consequences.

The program, on a commercial TV channel ( Australia) is designed for its entertainment value and "ratings", not for giving constructive advice to travellers.

  16. "The management reserves the right to refuse sevice to any person at any time and for any reason" by order of the management. In God we trust in others cash. ( from the US of A.)

Thai people manage their country, they are Thai citizens, every one else is an alien or foreigner. ( Alien is a legitimate immigration word.)

In Thailand the Thai people are the management, whether you like it or not. The West is west and the East is east. You do not compare chalk with cheese.

I am a WASP, in Australia I have been called a white b*****d, and I am one , by birth, not by profession. In the US of A I would be known as an Sonofabitch, it is how you use the word in a sentence is what matters, if one gets my meaning.

An Nationalism should not be confused with Racism.
