A mass grave containing 17.5 tonnes of human ashes has been unearthed in northern Poland, close to the former Nazi concentration camp of Soldau. Tomasz Jankowski from Poland's national remembrance institute said the grave contained at least 8,000 victims. The bodies are thought to have been dug up and burned in a Nazi operation to hide traces of their murders. The Nazis murdered Jews, political opponents and members of the Polish elite at Soldau. The concentration camp was built in 1939 for transit, internment and extermination and used throughout the Nazi occupation. Up to 30,000 people are thought to have been killed there and researchers hope to carry out DNA analysis of the remains to find out more about the victims. Among the Poles who were murdered were members of the clergy and intelligentsia. Archaeologists have found hundreds of traces of clothing, buttons and other items, but nothing of value, indicating the bodies were robbed before being set alight. Full Story

Ambulance services are under intense pressure, with record numbers of callouts and the most urgent, category-one, calls last month. BBC Two's Newsnight programme spent from 08:00 to 20:00 on Monday at six hospitals with the longest delays handing patients over from paramedics to accident-and-emergency staff. This should take 15 minutes or less - but crews often wait many hours and sometimes whole 12-hour shifts, with ambulances queuing outside unable to respond to other emergency calls. Full Story

Foreign Secretary Liz Truss's chances of becoming the next Tory leader have been boosted after she was endorsed by eliminated contender Suella Braverman. Chancellor Rishi Sunak came first in the latest round of voting, with Penny Mordaunt second and Ms Truss third. Ms Braverman then endorsed Ms Truss as the party's right-wing seeks to rally around a single candidate. Former Brexit Minister Lord Frost is now urging one of the other contenders, Kemi Badenoch, to step down. Lord Frost gave the foreign secretary his endorsement ahead of the first of three televised debates between the candidates. And writing in the Daily Telegraph, he suggested former equalities minister Ms Badenoch should pull out of the race "in return for a serious job in a Truss administration". Full Story

Last month, US President Joe Biden signed a landmark gun-control bill into law. While the legislation, which was passed with bipartisan support, has many limits, it was a step in America's efforts to tackle escalating gun violence. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court issued a decision that cast the future of more strict limits on gun ownership in doubt. So where does gun control go from here? Here's a look at some solutions that gun-control advocates and gun-rights proponents say could help stop escalating gun violence - and our North America correspondent Anthony Zurcher assesses their chances. The future of red flag laws Red flag laws, also known as Extreme Risk Protection Orders, allow police to temporarily seize legally owned guns from people who a judge has ruled to be a danger to themselves or others. Russian missiles have struck a city far from the eastern frontline, killing at least 23 people including three children, Ukrainian officials say. More than 100 were reported injured in the attack in Vinnytsia, which is south-west of Kyiv and a long way from the heart of the fighting in Donbas. Three Russian missiles hit an office block and damaged residential buildings. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called it "an open act of terrorism". The missiles hit the car park of the nine-storey office block at around 10:50 (07:50 GMT), Ukraine's State Emergency Service said. Residential buildings were also hit in the centre of Vinnytsia, which has a population of around 370,000. Full Story
