  1. For those of you who are saying that this breed of dog are killers know nothing about pitbulls. Firstly if you want to locate the killer you need to be looking at the other end of the lead. The truth is these dogs are super social animals and need to be brought up mixing with people from the beginning. Now if this dog is a full American pitbull ''which i doubt'' looking at the pic and it was 7 months old and has been raised freely mixing with patrons it would be 90% safe to assume he has been socialized and none aggressive with humans. Also a 7 month American pitbull would be smaller than the dog in the picture. It looks like he has a taller breed mixed in.

A pitbull becomes aggressive when it is locked away and has little or no human contact. When a pitbull is fully grown it can not be allowed to roam freely because of the dangers associated with other soi dogs. ''Not people''. this goes for socialized pitbulls as well. My pitbull is now 14 months old and soi dogs approach him when i walk him on his lead. They want to kill him, he wants to lick them to death. He is young and naive and i have already had vet bills from sio dog bites on his back side whilst on the lead. I know one day he would return the favour.

True, just like locating the killer at the other side of a barrel.

Owning a pit bull is the same as owning a gun. Once loaded both can kill.

Like guns pit bulls should only be owned under special licence and again like guns, pit bull owners should have to justify their reasons for owning one.

Anyone who wants a dog as a family pet have no reasons for such powerful dogs as pit bulls. As I said; this breed is mostly a status symbol for the lower classes, because pit bulls install fear into the majority of people and that`s the main reasons certain people like to own them, it give them a warped sense of power. It`s that simple.

  2. What an old tosser, what was he doing at a 'Battle of Britain' event? Neither him nor any other member of his family with all the medals on their chests

    fought in any wars.

  3. It's all in the breeding,

Quote from ASPA website "Today’s pit bull is a descendant of the original English bull-baiting dog—a dog that was bred to bite and hold bulls, bears and other large animals around the face and head. When baiting large animals was outlawed in the 1800s, people turned instead to fighting their dogs against each other. These larger, slower bull-baiting dogs were crossed with smaller, quicker terriers to produce a more agile and athletic dog for fighting other dogs." https://www.aspca.org/adopt/truth-about-pit-bulls

And this is the result today.

This breed is as dangerous and as powerful as a wolf or a hyena. These dogs should never be permitted to be kept as family pets or guard dogs or around people. One dog literally has the power to rip a person`s head off and rip apart a child like a rag doll.

Although any breed of dog, even the smallest can turn and bite, I will never see any justifications for keeping these hideous dangerous breeds of dogs.

  4. I think Prince Philip is the greatest. He was never one to be discrete with his thoughts and words and because he don`t give a rat`s behind what anyone thinks, he`s always got away with it as no one dare answer him back, the man commands respect.

Wonderful, 94 years old and still doing the rounds. Don`t care about his ancestry, for me he is the front person for what being British is all about. I love our British Royal family as much as the Thais love their monarch and can`t help feeling patriotic every time I see them.

The Duke of Edinburgh is someone that has to be admired, long may the Queen and the Prince reign.

  5. Hoping for some serious replies. I want to go out in public and get my mind off of work before I start traveling again around 6 AM. Is anything/any place open 1-6 AM? I have no idea what time the bars shut down, if ever. I'd rather not go to a nightclub unless there are 40+ year old people also there. A Nightclub would be my last choice, but still acceptable.

    What night? Saturday.

OK, here is a serious reply.

Book a hotel room and relax in the room from 1.00am until you are ready to leave. Plenty to do, buy a few drinks from a 7-Eleven, relax, have a sleep or watch TV for a few hours or even have a relaxing massage in the room. It`s safe and prior to leaving can have a nice bath or shower, perhaps an early morning breakfast at the hotel, then all fresh and ready for work the following day.

    That`s what I would do.

  6. Depends on what the dog was doing. 7 months is getting pretty mature. What would someone do if a nearly full-sized pit bull attacked him.

Not ten minutes ago I was petting my neighbors pit bull which is a big baby. He's so friendly all he might do is lick someone to death. But I've seen mean ones and...

    Cheers

The Russian guy could have explained to the police that the dog attacked him and he defended himself without running off, although not sure how he would explain carrying a knife?

I hate pit bulls and believe the breed should be eradicated. They are the favourite breed of the lower classes in the belief that these dogs give them some sort of status symbol of power. Every pit bull has the potential to kill, even the most seemingly gentle of them.

  7. Hell, I genuinely hope and doubt I'll ever be in many people's position on here.

I'm only mid 40's and own several properties. I also have many genuine friends in Aus wishing for me to visit and stay regularly.

Perhaps I'm harsh, but many of you old guys here just didn't ever plan well enough.

As the old saying goes; if you don't plan, you plan to fail.

No one wants to be with a mediocre failure. That's why many of you have so few friends.

Yes, harsh, but very much the truth in my opinion.

Reading many of your posts, I wouldn't want your kee nhoc arse hanging around my house either.

You don't have the wealth to spend time in your home country's well....why the <deleted> did you even come here?

Counting your pennies; eating at food courts and chasing happy hours for many I bet.

Don't whine; you've only got yourselves to blame.

  8. It is always wonderful to see long lost friends again and having them stay at my home is enjoyable for two or three days, then after that it starts to become inconvenient. It was the same back in my home country, if we had a party or get togethers and a friend or friends stayed overnight, it always felt like a relief when they left the following day.

This is not being selfish or anti social, people have their own lives to lead and things to do. Having friends stay means they have to be entertained and catered for, which places a hold on our normal schedules. The same applies in my home country, family and friends have to work, go shopping, have appointments and all the normal routine stuff

Times have changed since my younger days when I was single and my best friends were single, when we were happy go lucky, these days most of my old friends are married, have families and busy lives, the same as me. I would never expect people to accommodate me for longer than a couple of days.

If the OP would like to travel back to his country, then he should rent a cheap bed and breakfast accommodation and a car or even a motorbike or bicycle so he can go and visit people that I am sure would be thrilled to see him, perhaps even happy for him to stay a night or two, but expecting people to accommodate for several days or more is rather pushing the boundaries of peoples hospitality and not to be expected.

It`s all a matter or being reasonable and using common sense.

Getting cheap accommodations in the US is impossible. Renting a car is out of the question due to high insurance costs the OP would have to pay. A motorcycle is not cheap either, and a bicycle is impractical as his friends are scattered away from Flint.

Have you ever heard the expression; house guests and fish start to smell after 3 days?

  9. There maybe restaurants that try to claim their fish and chips are traditional English style, but no, there are no real authentic fish and chips meals cooked in the commercially designed deep fat fryers (as pictured below) served in Chiang Mai and probably not in the whole of Thailand. (Not as far as I know, anyway?).

Somethings I have mentioned many times in the past here on Thai visa, 2 great opportunities for the enterprising business entrepreneur. Be the first to open a real traditional chip shop or creating real proper made New York bagels to sell in Thailand. It would be a first in Thailand and in my opinion an absolute certainty and a sell out.

I don't think there would be enough trade to run a proper fish and chip shop here,

also finding some decent fish to fry would be difficult.and at this time of year potatoes

are also in short supply and expensive.

    regards worgeordie

    I so disagree.

I am half English and half American, have been described as a complete Yanker. So I love both of these foods.

There are reasonable substitute fish for the traditional cod, haddock and so on. Even fish and chip shops in the UK have begun using alternative fish.

I believe there are enough British and American ex-pats plus the tourists in Chiang Mai that would make the trade viable. What it requires is younger, enthusiastic and energetic people with the funding to set it up, the expertise and knowledge to prepare the food and having some experience in these fields.

Even considering that the products may have to be sold at higher prices than the meals served at regular farangy and Thai style restaurants, from experience I know that if someone has a product that everybody wants, people are prepared to pay more for it.

Unfortunately I am not too young, don`t have the funding or the expertise to set something like this up, but for those who do, those who dares wins.

  11. My son is a criminal lawyer working for a law firm in Bangkok, meaning he’s not literally a lawyer who is a criminal, but a lawyer who works on criminal cases, and being still a novice to the game, he works on low profile cases such as petty theft, assaults and so on.

He told me that the hierarchy of male lawyers working in his office including and especially the boss obtain a lot of perks and power associated with the job. There are many doors open to them that would not be accessible to the average Joe Public. The higher ranking police, the more prominent lawyers, the prosecutors and the judges are all one big happy family and good old pals together. If for example in a high profile criminal case, a desperate defendant who is obviously guilty of a serious crime hires the services of a lawyer, that lawyer behind the scenes is really working in collaboration with the police and the prosecutors and will deliberately manipulate the client into cooperating with the police and the prosecutors in order to help the client get off the hook or a lesser punishment, whether it be pleading guilty in the hope of a lesser sentence, suggested payments to certain parties, and would not be surprised if attractive female clients were given an option of payment in kind in certain circumstances. Obviously this is all going on behind the scenes. My point being that in Thailand, if one commits a serious crime and caught, than they’re pwned by the system, it then becomes a case of getting off as lightly as possible with the lawyer guiding the way more as a negotiator than a defender. Even if a defendant is innocent but still charged with a crime, one way or another the person is going the line the pockets of the lawyers that is the same the world over.

I also know that some female insurance agents, especially within the large well known insurance companies working with deals that provide big commissions, such as block policies on behalf of estate management companies, commercial and industrial policies and so on, will offer sexual favours to secure a policy contract, also some female real estate agents, again when big commissions are involved for the purchasing of upmarket land and real estate will oblige male clients with sexual favours to procure a deal. The same applies with bank staff, companies and other services where high commissions are involved.

In answer to the OP`s questions; yes, this is all going on behind the scenes. It`s an unwritten policy that everyone knows is going on, but prefer to keep all this very, hush, hush.

  12. Very easy.

I had the same problem with my air con unit that went entirely yellow after several years, also with a large round white plastic framed mirror that we brought over from the States 30 years ago.

First and this is most important, switch off and disconnect all electrical power to the air con unit.

Wear a pair of rubber gloves to protect your hands and eye goggles to protect the eyes during the following process. Next fill a small washing up bowl with hot water. Then mix in a couple of cap fulls of raw bleach and a few good squirts of washing up liquid.

Next soak a cloth with the mixture from the bowl and hand wring it out, don`t have the cloth dripping wet. Sprinkle the cloth with some raw washing powder and then scrub the unit hard with the cloth and repeat a few times.

Next take a scourer (as pictured below) dip it in the bleach and washing up liquid mixture in the bowl (don`t have the scourer dripping wet) and scrub the unit hard with the scourer several times until the yellow film is removed and the unit appears pure white again. After that wipe the unit over with a clean damp cloth and wipe dry. Ensure that no water drips inside the unit.

If completed carefully, this does not scratch the unit. I have been using this method for many years and works every time.

Do you know if any of these fish and chip shops do deliveries?

    To the OP:

It is not illegal to hold or open a UK bank account as a non resident, but policy that the majority of UK onshore banks are no longer accepting non resident accounts due to concerns of money laundering and terrorist activities. Some will accept non resident accounts but these fall under different terms and conditions, such as they do not pay interest and on-line facilities pertaining to those accounts are not permitted. Similar banking rules apply here in Thailand regarding non resident accounts.

Onshore UK banks will normally permit foreign addresses for their accounts, but the accounts holders are suppose to inform the bank that they are not resident in the UK, because many types of bank accounts are not applicable for non residents. If a UK bank begins to suspect that an account holder is non resident without being notified, than that bank may close and freeze the account, plus claim back any interest it considers the account holder was not entitled to including other fees it feels fit to charge.

The solution is to open an offshore UK account, or known as International banking, which is specially desired for non UK residents. Most offshore banks will send credit and debit cards via post and have on-line facilities that enable an offshore account holder to transfer funds to any country abroad in any currency. Usually the offshore interest rates are crap, but as I have explained above, these are the only options available.

Trying to bluff it out that he is a UK resident, is done at the OP`s own risk and discretion.

As I posted earlier, the ESD regulations have stopped the UK Offshore banking for many of us.

Barclays would not specifically tell me how I had failed to pass. Not living in the EU, working for non-EU companies and paid in USD, one or all of those?

    Boloney.

The European Savings Directive pertains to tax and tax tracking between the European members States and has nothing to do with Thailand.

I`ve had offshore Barclays accounts both in Jersey and the Isle of Man for over 26 years and only 7 weeks ago, one of my sons who is resident in Thailand opened an offshore Barclays account for the first time.

Possible reasons for not qualifying for a Barclays offshore account is that either you do not have enough funds, you could not satisfy them that you have a bona fife residential address in Thailand, not given accurate details of where you lived and worked before, your accounts have gone into arrears in the past and you have a bad track record with the banks. There could be a multitude of reasons that only you would know about why offshore banking is off limits to you. For us who fulfil the requirements and have good financial track records with checkable references, no problem, UK offshore banking is not prohibited to us living in Thailand.

  17. One would have thought that the required home country police check would have turned this up.

Does the guy in the photo know how his image has now been tagged??

These were my thoughts exactly. If I discovered my photo associated with sick paedophiles displayed like this, I would sue.

So what about foreign teachers from other western countries besides the UK? How do schools go about checking them out?

I believe there should be mandatory measures taken to restrain paedophiles. Place them on an International sex offenders register for life accessible on an on-line database to everyone for free, ban them from obtaining passports and travelling abroad, contain them in their home countries. Any foreign child sexual predators caught in Thailand, should be treated the same as drug dealers, given possible life sentences or even face the death penalty in severe cases. This may seem harsh, but how would one feel if their child were to become a victim of a child rapist?

  18. I pay Assist Thaivisa to do my yearly renewal and 90 day reporting every year and it only takes me 20-30 minutes a year to get it all done. I show up to immigration, walk in the back, say hello to the Assist Thaivisa staff and to the immigration officer, sign a couple of papers and go home. Later they drop off my passport. All very pleasant. For 90 days I drop everything at the office and they send it back later. Assist Thaivisa, the way to go.

Many people do this. Many people complained about visa agents not very long ago (some still complain).

Now a thread about a club/organization doing what visa agents do.

Its about choice... Dave says he takes about 30 minutes each year to complete his Immigration requirements, can understand that he uses an agent and he is a busy man.

For me it takes, with an on line appointment, less than an hour every year.My 90 day is mailed in at the PO when we go shopping however I am a retiree.

I save 6,000 b or whatever the cost is.

Lets not go down the agent v self route again its been flogged to death. Do whatever suits your circumstances.

    Quite agree.

So far I have been lucky and managed to obtain an on-line slot each year. I would begrudge having to use a middle man in order to obtain my visa, not only for the amount of money involved that will make certain people extremely rich for doing absolutely nothing except securing a place in the queue, but also the power that goes with it, meaning that if I am unfortunate enough to have to go via an agent having no other choices regarding business at Immigration means that`s more kiss a-se I would have to do and more people having to be appeased to ensure my long stay here.

And also quite rightly as you say; Lets not go down the agent v self route again its been flogged to death. Do whatever suits your circumstances.

  19. Honestly, a life in the UK following a stay in prison would be no picnic. Moving to Thailand could be a very positive thing for this man,

    True.

This guy is extremely fortunate indeed, because he is having his move to Thailand provided for him by courtesy of the British taxpayer, and as a bonus will have all the benefits of a Thai citizen, such as no Immigration crap to deal with, being able to buy a home, work and own businesses legally plus eligible for the 30 baht health scheme, his criminal past never questioned or held against him if he manages to stay clean in Thailand.

    Who said; crime doesn`t pay?

  20. I've been aware the Japanese Long Stay Club was doing this for a long time. We've talked with Immigration about this as being something the Chiang Mai Expats Club could offer and we had to "guarantee" a certain number of participants with their documents all in order. It seemed we would have to find a venue with a copy service because I know, frankly, many people show up without their documents in order. Our current venues of Le Meridien Hotel and River Market don't offer copy services. It just didn't seem like something we could offer in conjunction with our regular monthly General Meetings.

We did have a very good meeting with Immigration officials in October and produced a nice video that is a good overview of Immigration procedures:

    http://www.chiangmaiexpatsclub.com/immigration-2014/

I`m a little gob smacked on reading this thread.

Are you saying that if the Chiang Mai Expats Club found a venue with copying facilities and with the attendance of certain number of participants that something could be arranged similar to the Japanese Long Stay Club for westerners?

This is the first time I have heard of the Long Stay Club and surely if such an arrangement is possible for us, can this be investigated further?

Beetlejuice, I've invited you to come to the Board meetings of CEC numerous times. If you'd chosen to get involved you may have discovered that there are actually three well-established Japanese expat clubs, each serving a slightly different segment of the Japanese population and a new one that is trying to be like Lanna Care Net. I know you've been here a long time, but there's still more to learn and involvement in the Board of CEC and service to your fellow expats are ways to continue to grow.

Seriously, though a big part of the reason why this hasn't been pursued is that there is only so much that a very limited number of people can do. The current CEC Board members are stretched very thin. Recently, we put out an appeal for an couple of openings on the Board and the only people who responded were a couple of newcomers. We definitely appreciate their stepping up, but taking on a project like this (having Immigration come to CEC once a month) requires the skills of someone with executive ability who has been in Chiang Mai for a while and knows how things get done.

It`s amazing how you turn everything into a confrontation, when all I asked was a simple question, which you have now answered in your last paragraph.

Nevertheless, thank you for your reply and still very interesting. So I assume what you are saying is that it is possible to bring the Immigration processes out of their official premises to a rendezvous point somewhere else under certain conditions and circumstances.

I thank you for making us aware of this and will delve into this further.

  21. The prime minister has a difficult task ahead, he cannot relinquish power until all the disputing factions come to some sort of agreement and compromise and they are no longer a threat to peace in Thailand.

What has this current regime has done to facilitate agreements and compromises?

Surely after more than a year there is a framework and time frame

for these negotiations, but I have seen nothing.

Maybe you can point us to where this is actually happening.

And maybe next time you can quote my whole post instead of just parts that suits you which misrepresents what I have said and is against Thai visa rules.

To try and explain in ways that even you may understand, firstly, the hard core factions are still there and their leaders lurking in the background and in many cases their words of wisdom have proven futile and they are not trusted. The present government is seeking middle ground, but the oppositions are not willing to compromise, it`s a winner takes all scenario that if gaining power will bring Thailand into a civil war situation..

The fact is that the political situation in Thailand is extremely volatile and not something that can be resolved in a short period, the prime minister is aware of this. Mr Prayut Chan-o-cha wants to retire and be remembered as the man who restored peace and stability back to Thailand and will not relinquish his hold until this has been archived.

As regarding what is happening behind the political scene, I suggest you do some research yourself because it appears you know very little on the turmoil still very much with us in Thailand.

Here is a link you get you started:

    http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/04/24/us-thailand-protest-idUSBREA3N0BJ20140424

  22. I love it when these idiots constantly spout this "must obey the law" B.S.

It's almost laughable that this comes from a group who had an ILLEGAL COUP, which is considered sedation and treason "under the law", which they ignored, and then promptly tore of the LEGAL constitution and implemented their own ILLEGAL mandates, and granting themselves total immunity for all past & future actions. Must obey the law? Gee, generals, why don't YOU try doing that sometime, instead of constantly believing that you are ABOVE the law.

I for one was grateful for the military coup, considering that the country was on the brink of a civil war.

The prime minister has a difficult task ahead, he cannot relinquish power until all the disputing factions come to some sort of agreement and compromise and they are no longer a threat to peace in Thailand. In the meantime the troublemakers must be observed and actions taken against those who are considered a danger to the national security.

Personally, I hope this present government remains in power forever for reasons mentioned above.
