  1. Disgusting. Why on earth should they lose their livelihoods because of something they did in their own time which had nothing to do with their ability to do their job? They can still kick a ball just as well as they did before.

(BTW, I'm not condoning their behaviour at all, which was also disgusting.)

Shame that you and many others just can`t grasp the situation in your minds.

Usually people would not give a bunch of young lads indulging in a sex session with prostitutes a second thought. In fact if it were me, most of my mates would have laughed and said; you lucky so en so. But if people commit an act that discredits their employers and mars the reputation of a profession and a country they represent, then they deserve to be ousted.

It`s not what they done but how they done it that brought these actions against them. Only the feeble minded would not understand the reasons behind the decisions to sack these football players today.

  2. It is also prudent to factor in medical care. How much is a personal thing depending on how healthy you are but for someone in their 60's for example Sheryl on the Health Forum has said that you should have 2m in the bank to allow for medical emergencies. A heart attack and subsequent care can eat this amount up very quickly unless you have adequate medical insurance

An extremely important and good point.

Anyone considering staying in Thailand for the long term or perhaps for the remainder of their lives, should have at least a minimum of 2 or even better 3 million baht saved in a Thai bank. I would never feel secure just living on a monthly or yearly income only being one pay cheque away from disaster. Quite frankly I couldn`t live like that on a hope and prayer that all works out and I never become ill or involved in a serious accident or Immigration decides to up the ante to obtain a visa.

Another point is; for those who obtain their incomes from abroad, is to base the bahts rates on the lowest bank foreign exchanged rates and not on the present day rates, meaning they can ride out the storm if the rates go down.

  3. "quality life" is a subjective judgement -- regardless, your reply was very helpful. Thank you. We wouldn't eat out much, maybe have 2 cars and travel in country or region once or twice. Probably grow a lot of our food or buy it at local markets. Kindle books are a vice -- as is wine -- that might be a problem... regardless, 40K to 50K seems to be the range, with the lower end possible if we don't travel much. We just don't want to feel like we are pinching pennies to get by .. we would like to live comfortably, simply and well. Seems like we can...

    thanks again,

    Ilario

I have lived in Thailand for 31 years and know how much it costs a family to live here.

Regarding the details you have mentioned above, you are looking at 50000 baht per month, perhaps less is you are prepared to put up with some basic necessities and not do social or travel much. Then add on to that any accommodation rents and aprox 16000 baht per month International School fees. So being realistic, you can estimate your total annual expenditure being almost 800000 baht per year.($26000 US).

In my case, Mrs Beetlejuice and I live in our own home no rents to pay. We do not use air con, because I hate it, prefer fans and each of us have motorbikes and no cars. We have dogs and cats and mostly shop at the local markets. Our children are adult now, so no more school fees, they don`t live at home but are always on the ear hole for money. My total monthly living expenditure, 30000 baht on average. We are not having champagne breakfasts on that, plus we don`t go out much and mostly eat at home, but what I consider as living comfortably.

If you and Mrs Llario enjoy regular vacations, eating out at Western style restaurants on a regular basis, eating mostly farangy foods, expect to have air con and all modern conveniences in the home, including pay cable or satellite TV and fast Internet, having to use your vehicles every day, than obviously this is going to increase your living expenditure considerably. Also, if you are the type who enjoys some wine, women and song on occasions than that will whack up your costs.

So the answer to your question is; depends. If you are prepared to live my kind of lifestyle then with International School fees, you could do it on 46000 baht per month. As regarding wanting a better lifestyle than that, then it`s like asking; how long is a piece of string? It all depends on your expectations of a life style here.

  4. If a business depends on the magnificently mis-named 'pretties', it cannot be much of a place ...

Let me ask you this. If there are two bars side by side and all things being equal about them but one had pretties serving and the other one did not which one would you think punters would prefer to enter? smile.png

Not only that but the bar owner does not have to pay the pretties. They are provided by the beer company as a reward for the bar buying a certain number of boxes of beer. At least that is what I was told by one bar owner.

How much beer do I have to buy to get my own pretty?biggrin.png

Just down about 8 bottles of Chang or Leo gut rot beer and after a few minutes even the uglys will look like pretties.

  5. Unfortunately this case will probably result in the guy going to prison where he will be in his natural environment and the two child victims having to live with their trauma for the rest of their lives, especially the 8 years old girl who was knock unconscious and raped. For her it`s a life sentence. Hopefully the 13 year old boy will not evolve into a raging psycho like his father.

It`s a dangerous world out there, full of nutters and for those like me who are also parents, are always in fear for our kids. Sickening, truly sickening.

  6. Coughing increases intra-abdominal pressure, if there is any gas in your stomach the need to expel it will increase, hence the belch. As to why so much gas, that is usually down to what and how fast you eat.

Sheryl, you are on the right track.

I have had the same symptoms for years. Normally if I cough hard, it creates a huge build up of gas in my stomach that extends to the bottom of my throat and is like a choking feeling. Sometimes this happens when I am asleep, then suddenly wake choking my lungs up.

The only way to relieve it is with a good belch or several belches to expel the air.

I would like to ask Simon, does he suffer from acid reflux, chronic indigestion or heartburn?

  7. nahhh. I don

t think they are that way even with other farangs

    it's probanly youtongue.png

Was waiting for that one. Knew it wouldn't take long facepalm.gifbah.giflaugh.png

Don`t know how old you are? But you seem to have much to learn about life experiences.

I have worked in many countries and it`s always been the same, that when you are the new boy, your work colleges will try it on, meaning, because they know you are at a disadvantage being new, unless a person comes in of a high rank. The trick is, to make it apparent from the start that you`re not one who will tolerant BS by displaying your feelings in a clear, firm and precise way without going over the top or being paranoid.

As the wise man says; start as you mean to continue, or just tolerate it and be the long and suffering.

  8. Leave the beer pretties alone!!! Thailand is slowly becoming a boring totalitarian communist rules only no fun place and I hate that!

    My vote goes to Leo

I wouldn`t quite go that far, but this definitely pertains to Chiang Mai, the epitome of political correctness and decency.

The title of this thread should be; No Sex Please We`re From Chiang Mai. It`s not my cup of tea, or glass of beer, but I`m sure the puritans at heart love all the clamp downs.

  9. It appears that the Cambodians are testing the water, to see how far they can go before being physically challenged.

A similar ploy was carried out by German troops during WW2, when they crossed over a bridge into French territory just prior to their invasion of France.

Although it may appear as a few Cambodian troops intruding onto a few metres of Thai territory, there is more to this than that. It places Thailand in a rather precarious situation. It`s a sort of the testing of strength. Would be interesting to see how this situation transpires.

  10. Very clever promotion to attract the attention to their property project.

To attract attention in a new project, developers offer discounts, guarantied % return, free iphones, free cars, plane tickets... It is a competitive market indeed.

In this case, by offering a Thailand Elite membership, the developer aims at those foreigners who don't feel comfortable to buy a condo because of visa concerns.

Instead of giving a discount, the developer buys a 20 year Thailand Elite membership to his client. Good idea.

The offer most probably does not come with the cheap units.

By the way, I am a Thailand Elite member since 12 years.

    It is just great !!!

So you`re the one that bought the Thailand Elite card. I was wondering who it was.

  11. Solar halos are not caused by pollution - they are caused by very thin clouds made of ice crystals in the upper atmosphere

Yes, it`s similar to a lunar corona.

Seeing something like this is extremely rare, I have never been lucky enough to have witness such an event.

Brilliant photos that I think are worth sending to a newspaper or magazine that I am should will be interested.

Congratulations and well done for catching this amazing event on camera.

  12. Unfortunately you're quite right, although Thailand may be different.

In the West, they make all kinds of laws to keep the "economically active" part of the population (ie the rich) amused. The "economically passive" part of the population (ie the majority) is economic trash. Every Farang government tries to get rich of this "trash", eg export them to Thailand.

This is what happens if you value money and make it your god.

Thailand (maybe whole Asia) should be different.

Here money (and the freedom to use it and sacrifice everything for it) is not the highest value, so they say. Thailand needs money, of course. Not necessarily Farang bodies in their country, but Farang money for a while. These condo property & visa packages are meant to acctract money and keep investors' stressed bodies amused.

If you're good in calculations, you might find out that the hassle to go to immigration every 90 days is actually cheaper than a TE visa. But there's obviously a strong demand from those old expats that can't sleep at night because they get paranoid about the visa situation. They might as well travel to neighbouring countries, but they are obviously afraid to get banned from their Thai property.

Money can be a bondage sometimes.

not trying to be funny do you actually live in Thailand ? or have spend any time in Asia ? as you seem to have got your premise the wrong way around

There is more of an emphasis on money and materialism in Thailand and Asia then anywhere else in the world I have ever lived.

Yes, I live in Thailand, and I've been in Asia for several years. I was in Asia and Europe, both when I was rich and when I was completely broke. In Europe (Germany) I almost died when I had no money, whereas in Asia people supported me. Only temporary shortages in both continents, but long enough to compare.

They are materialists in both continents, of course. But only in Europe you're treated as trash when you're out of economy. Thais (and other Asians) would still treat you as a human being and keep you alive, because you're a guest. Egoistic Europeans forgot what hospitality means.

I know it`s not polite to laugh, but........

  13. You cannot own a condo in the true sense. It`s the juristic management that have full rights over the land and buildings, the residents only purchase a time period on the lease, or in other words, the deal is really just a glorified rental agreement. This is why farangs are permitted to buy condos in Thailand, because it means they still own nothing except the rights to live in the property and sell their time periods left on the lease, providing they abide by the terms of the lease dictated by the management company.

Over the long term the juristic management companies make more profits from the multiple annual maintenance fees than they do from the purchases of the leaseholds. This is big business that I describe as jobs for the lads, because it involves the companies own insurance companies, maintenance people and all the services associated with the condos. Everyone gets a piece of the action except the mugs who buy into these units. I would never consider a condo as a realistic investment. Remember, whether tenants reside in the units or not, they are still imposed to pay the maintenance fees.

I would rather rent a home privately than purchase a condo and commit myself to a juristic management company. that have powers to charge any amounts they feel fit for annual service fees and maintenance costs.

  14. One of the golden rules in Thailand, never get involved, that seems one lesson the Australian had not learned. Why did the guy decide to make a video of an incident that had nothing to do with him and then get into and altercation with a deadly weapon?

Another point, the police dropping their charges means nothing, as the final word has to come from the public prosecutor or in other words; it`s not over until the fat lady sings and in Thailand this could continue on for years until a final decision is made.

The guy is far from being out of the woods yet, my guess being, his nightmare is only beginning.

  15. They can't have sex at home ... with 27 people living in a small studio condo.

    Where to go?

I Will Open A "One Hour Hotel" For This Obvious Business Opportunity.

I Will Call It: "One And Done".

There are already cheap short time establishments in Thailand, known as love hotels. They have been around for a long as I can remember.

  16. ^^^^ but if that is the only land they can expand into..it is then very desirable..

No, because it means this is an industrial area. They will just build around the land that under Thai law can be erected only one metre from the boundaries of the said land.

No one is going to want to set up home next to a whacking great factory, probably with heavy trucks traveling in and out the facility and with the prospects of other industrial units being built close by.

It`s really up to the person`s own discretion what she decides, but I know what I would do in that situation and considering the land was inherited, the woman is in a no lose situation. One fact I can assure you of, that the said land will never be a wise investment. And as I said; take the money and run.

  17. Maybe build him a large kennel with a wooden frame covered in mosquito netting.

I wanted to avoid caging him since when he's caged he just whines constantly, but maybe that is the only option. It could even be pretty simple, basically a metal frame to keep him from coming out the sides (he can't jump) and a few poles to hold up the net. Then I could take it apart easily in the morning. That sounds like a pretty good option actually. Thanks man!

We consider our dogs as part of our family and they have full run of the home, meaning they live inside the building with us.

Real dog lovers don`t keep their dogs outside 24/7. If in your case the dog is incontinent, there are products available at reputable vets, such as washable dog nappies for example.

Dogs have the same vulnerabilities as humans. If kept outdoors, then there are no ways to protect the dog from insect bites, including mosquitoes, fleas, ticks and even wasp stings.

  18. In total agreement.with the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration.

Ever heard the old saying; give them an inch and they'll take a yard? And I`m not talking about the lengths of the males manhood's.

In the UK and the States many of the public parks have become hangouts where young people do and sell drugs and in some areas the parks are actually frequented by street prostitutes plying their trade. Once these people gain footholds in the public parks, than they become no go areas as recreational grounds for families and children, which is the purpose of parks.

The best solution is to have CCT cameras installed and imposed mandatory fines on those who exhibit inappropriate or obscene behavior in public areas.

  19. Acting the clown is becoming the new trend among young idiots people.

These girls consider themselves as being real cool, outrageous and a rave. If they haven’t done so already, than I bet they can’t wait to show off to all their so-called mates and post their photos on facebook and other social network sites they subscribe to.

The part they fail to understand is that all their stuff will end up on the toxic web, probably forever that will eventually run full circle and smack them right in their faces later on. Whether it will be future employers, business interests, credibility and people relationships, one way or another it will work against them.

People should keep in mind the Internet can either make you or break you, everything you do can be taken down as evidence and used against you for the rest of your life. Not paranoia, but the reality.
