  1. I have an AIS aircard but the signal strength in the village does not allow for connection. I have heard you can put together an extension aerial which would allow for my aircard to be remote from my laptop and increase signal strength.

My mobile phone works fine in the same place for internt albeit a bit slow.

It is not an issue with the SIM cards as I have changed them over and the problem remains - phone connects but Aircard does not.

Any advice appreciated as to how I can increase signal strength to the laptop!!!

  2. Just caught my first few snakehead in both dams and a small river. Although all pretty small - about 400g - is great fun, more like hunting than fishing at times. Ate them all !!!

All caught on a surface frog but had a few takes on spinners as well.

Brother in law arrives tommorrow for New Years and apparently he is the number one fisherman around these parts so should get a few pointers from him too.

Thanks to all Impkenai and Quiksliva for your advice. Still a lot to learn but having a ball. already had demands from the missus to "holiday fishing".

  3. Asanee makes a valid point about Tiger's use of the Charter Airline Terminal at SIN but given that the two building are pretty close to each other that shouldn't be a major issue I wouldn't have thought. I can't agree with the comments though regarding cancelled flights at short notice due to lack of passengers, two of my three flights with Tiger from Phuket to Singapore saw me being one of only ten or fifteen passengers at most, the return flight however seem to nearly always be quite full. Thai Airways by contrast had/has a nasty habit of cancelling it's mid morning Phuket/Bangkok flight unless the flight was/is fully booked, even the travel agents in HKT advise against that flight due to the uncertainty.

I have flown Singapore to Phuket and Bangkok every 2 weeks for the last few years and probably 60 odd percent of that on Tiger. Only once was flight cancelled and must admit was not impressed as it meant I missed my connection to Khon Kaen - not much concern shown by Tiger.

  4. Interested to know if it is necessary to use a steel/wire leader when fishing for Pla Chon. Have looked at various photos but can't quite see whether a steel leader or some heavier test is used

Also any tips on which lures are more successful than others much appreciated.

I am just about to head off for a 4 month stretch in Isaan, Maha Sarakham province, and hope to do a bit of fishing while there.

  5. Thank you so much for all the wonderful advice and PM's I have recieved. Please, please keep posting replies even if you think your advice or information will not be of any use because so far most that has been posted is of some use. :)

I too am about to start the process of buiding a house in Isaan - Maha Sarakham province. Been quoted 2 million for approx 172 square meters. I have visited a house they are just completing in Korat and was pretty impressed with wokmanship etc. Obviously there will be a few plus plusses along the way but we intend to be there during the whole build so hope to keep some control.

As a matter of interest has anyone else come across the FACT that after Songkraan it will be very bad luck to buid a house for the next 4 years. Get your building going now!!!!

  6. Anyone know where I can get hold of a windpump set up fo a borehole, something like those you see on cattle stations all around Australia and Africa?

Or maybe a basic design I can get built over here?

  7. Mr Moo - probably the most expensive tackle shop on the island.

As for refurbished Penns - about a year ago a spate of robberires on the game Fishing boats in Chalong could very well be the source. I lost 3 Penns and 2 Shimanos one night!!!!

  8. Anybody else having trouble paying for Tiger flights over the internet with a credit card?

Used to do it all the time but just recently all I get is a message something to the effect of we cant process this form of payment right now please try again later.

Well have tried many times and get to the same place.

    3Bb

I would have thought that with a WP you would not have to pay the year up front. 3BB have had far too many foreigners claiming to stay for one year but then go back home after a few months without paying the cancellation fee. So now the policy is pay the full year.

3BB just fine at our apartment on the south end of Nanai Road. CAT service is available through Patong Cable TV, works well at our apartments.

I too am at the southern end of Nanai with 3BB and very happy with connection.

I did not have to pay a year in advance as signed up in the GF's name!!

  9. I thought that would depend on vehicle speed

No way for you, fine for me :)

as the busses manage Phuket BKK in 9-10 hours driving, it doesnt take that much to go faster

BTW, been doing this for +8 years and +450k km

You quoted where I said at least 9 hours, and you say 9 to 10, so I don't know what you are disputing.

Over the length of the distance and time between Phuket and Bangkok (and between BKK and KK) I doubt that even a Bugatti Veyron could trim very much time, given the condition of the roads, the density of traffic, rest stops, and the usual road blocks for police (and the inevitable pile-up between a speeding coach and a speeding minibus somewhere along the line.)

Realistically there is no way you can drive from Phuket to Khon Kaen in 12 hours, which is what I declared "No Way" to. Even your 10 hours allowance to get to Bangkok from Phuket means you would have to travel the remaining 450 road kilometres in two hours to get to KK.

Or can your Vigo manage 225+ kilometres an hour?

I must have travelled from KK to BKK, and back, dozens of times at night and by day. The shortest time I've managed it is five and a half hours. Usually it takes more like 7. I'm also driving a Vigo, and I'm no slouch. The condition of the road and traffic is a more decisive limit than how heavy you plant your foot. Much of the route barely qualifies as a highway, let alone a motorway.

Phuket to Korat last month with pregnant wife so many "comfort breaks" 12 hours

  10. There are very simple tests required to qualify, and starting 0845 car lisence is issued by lunch and bike lisence by 3pm

Just got back from the Licence office. Arrived there just before 9am and was out before 10am with both car and motorbike licences valid for 1 year.

  11. My girlfriend lives about 20km to the south west of Borabue. I live in Patong but am looking into building a 'holiday home' in her village. There is already another farang there, never met him as he lives most of the time in Hua Hin.

Anyway if we do build a house there I am sure I would be looking for someone to have a chat and few beers with occasionaly when we are up to visit.
