  1. I'm Christian, i would not wear a Buddha no matter who asked me to.

I did not come here to openly dispose of the religion i was born into and am surprised at those who are willing to

What makes you think that following a Buddhist philosophy would be against Christiany. As Buddha said do not worship me as a god, there are many gods to follow. As I had no religion even though raised a Christian, a loosely followed Zen seems to work. I'm too utterly ruthless and warlike to follow closely.

  2. I got a couple of stories about Tim as well. When I lived with my mum and Tim was quite young 11 years ago, I used to go off the Thailand four or five times a year. He would always be sitting at the gate waiting for me when the taxi pulled up. Mum said he would rush off out the back window a few minutes before I arrived. Coincidence? maybe. When I lived in Broadstairs, he used to come for a walk with me round the block every morning. No lead, just followed me. Neighbours thought it most amusing.

But the one episode in Tim's life that I remember, apart from pushing the dogs out of way to get to their food just before he died, was, one night, again in Broadstairs, there was an almighty commotion coming from the back garden. Four or five cats scapping like fury. I rushed out to save my prize pussy, but he was no-where to be seen. Something made me look up, and there he was perched right at the top of a slender Willow tree, keeping an eye on proceedings. As soon as I had cleared the garden, down he came. Who said cats couldn't come down from trees?.

To remember the things your deceased pet had done is such a bittersweet moment, but even though their gone, your heart is being warmed by their memory. And their spirit still infuses yours.

  3. Hi all!

My girlfriend and I are due to arrive in Koh Samui in early february for a week, staying on Lamai beach, after travelling around Thailand for a couple of weeks. After reading about recent events, and indeed, many comments on this forum following these events(the murder of the English girl in particular) I am now filled with apprehension with regards to staying on Samui. Can anybody put my mind at rest as I am seriously considering cancelling our hotel reservation..??

The most dangerous thing on Samui are the coconut trees. I think two or three people get smacked on the noggin every year. Not suprising as there are two million trees on the island. I wonder why the polical correct crowd hasn't demanded that they be cut down, oh come to think of it the enviorntalist would oppose them :o

Next most dangerous item are Evel Knieval wannabes on the rented motorbikes, bloody morons some folks can be.

After that beware of the chilis :D:D:D

  4. My cat died 18 years back of feline distemper, kitty aids or whatever its name is. Today theres a vaccine but there wasn;t when he acquired it. He had been fighting it for a few years, with the super vitaminzation being the only thing my vet could do, toward the last.

Coming in from work one day he was laying on the floor unable to move with a puddle of green ichor that he vomited. I knew it was the end, and I guess it was my selfishness that made me hold on to him, for as long as I did with even though the last few days of his life I could sense the pain. But I didn't want to part with him.

I can't think of many things harder that I've done than holding my friend while the vet gave him the injection to put him down, and I drove home to bury him in a spot he liked to lay in the sun.

He was the greatest of all animal companions a person could have. He gave me 13 years of total loyalty. I took him to South America on a few vacations to my inlaws farm. I saw him leap off the roof over looking the garden to snag a humminbird outta the air, landing in a rose bush, but not giving up his prey. We went out one day only to return to 4 dead rats placed on our bed that he'd snagged outta the grain room.

His size was of twentyfour pounds with a large frame so he wasn't fat, simply healthy, had the campesinos afraid, and backing away from him. Once I asked a friend to watch him as we were only going down for three weeks. We returned and I went to pick up Hombre (cats name) and I asked my friend if there was any problems. He looked at me funny and said no. A couple of years later he admitted that the cat and him had a problem the night we left, and he hadn't seen the cat from that point until a couple of hours before I went to pick him up.

    Dang I miss him still.

  5. Do you have Thai font on your PC ???

Yes I do and it's installed

    Uninstall Jave & reload it.

    Java

Done that thanks but no different

Can you access Komchadluek when you type 202.60.196.116 in your browser address bar?

There's also a Flash animation on that page that seems to load first. Do you have Flash installed?

I tried typing those numbers in and it comes up the same as before "cannot find server" page. Yes I do have flash installed.

The funny thing is Manager is fine. I just can't work it out. Thanks for your help so far.

I can'y get them either, and I'm in the US. But I have a program called Proxomitron installed on my computer that could be the culprit here.

  6. Whenever I've seen a Thai take off or put on an amulet, they always hold it between their palms and touch it to their forehead.

Some Thais kiss their amulets and recite a litany before putting them on. I wear two small amulets that belonged to my wifes deceased father. Their properties (supposed) are don't die in accident and good luck. I put them on before leaving my home

My wife was bringing to me a die in accident amulet ( possibly Luang Phun)( a gift from MIL)when she came from Thailand in 2001. Her plane (China Air or Air China I don't remember which and wife asleep so I can't ask) took off from the Taipai airport when shortly after takeoff an engine caught fire and turned back and landed safely. She continued her trip after spending night in Taipai. I think the same flight crashed a few months after that killing lots of people.

She wasn't able to reach me by phone so I'm at the airport to pick her up and she was a no show, I'm a bit bummed to say the least, and I'm wondering what happened. Fortunately a Delta agent checked and found her on a plane heading to San Francisco and was able to explain there had been a delay. I didn't realize till after my wife (to be) arrived (14 hours later)what the cause was.

  7. [quote name='Rigger' date='2006

I think you are manking something out of nothing. First off i dont see any people starving in isaan sure they are poor but no one goes hungry. And I dont see them adorne them selfs with gold unless they have excess money or it is a gift and the first hour of need it is sold off.

If you belive the people on this thread the only people that buy gold are lo-so farang and thai. Bar girls. And

greedy Thai farmers that wear it to feel important while there familys go with out. You people sit there with you flash comuters and dvd cameras and cars and you want to take the piss out of some people living up country that likes to wear a gold chain

Shit you people are un real :o:D:D

I wear a gold 1 baht chain with two small amulets given to me by my wife. The amulets were her fathers and have sentimental value as well as monetary.

My wife on the other hand is now throughly westernized and I know that what I get her will be appreciated if a diamond is involved somewhere.

To me what I see as an extravagant and utterly unnecessary show of wealth is the gangster rappers covering their teeth with gold, platinum and precious stones. They call it the "grill", as in show me your grill. Be pretty messy getting robbed for whats in your mouth, the rapid extraction process, would smart a bit.

  8. Tim passed away this evening peacefully at the pets hospital. He had chronic liver disease coupled with old age. He rallied during the week, but it got too much for him. I am happy for him as I remember him as a happy, vibrant family member that everyone loved, not the skeleton he had become. R.I.P. TIM

I feel really bad for your loss, I'm quite fond of cats, and I still miss the last one I had who passed away 18 years ago. I keep pictures of him up in my home just to remember what a great companion he was.

    Once again sympathies

  9. I find all sports (other than those martial arts fights with few rules) boring to watch. Maybe soccer is better that American football, but give me a good book or a good film anytime. :D

Soccers what mothers all want their kids to play, just a good stretch of the legs with very little contact. :D

Father's want their sons to play rugby.

I don't mind watching american or even aussie football (if I knew the teams better it'd help, so I'd know who to root for.)

I grew up on baseball, but like cricket, its an aquired taste.

I played basketball till I was 36, and the game and my body passed me by. :o

I do like those mixed martial arts bouts.

  10. What about central air con.

Thai construction methods dont lend themselves well to central air con....unless you install at the point of construction. There are way too many concrete beams used for it to be an easy job.

Electricity is set to rise in price by at least 7% this year as Gas subsidies are pulled by Toxin, more likey 10%.

Smart thinkers are focusing on energy efficiency and better insulation rather than just more and more air conditioning.

Cooling small well insulated areas quickly as they are being occupied is the way to go.

Double glazing, airated block, foam spray insulated roofing and draught excluders are the new essentials.

Also when choosing a home make sure areas that face west are not master bedrooms or living areas.

Thank you for reply, I agree energy efficency will be of prime concern when building. What about partial earth berming to lower floor to take advantage of the cooling effects of earth? Seemed to be quite popular here in the 70's Also I notice in strip shopping centers built around here they utilize I beam, which alllow the interior to be entirely open or very easy to change room dimensions if desired. Would it be practical or financially to expensive for the installation in comparision to typical Thai construction. Somewhere I've a box or two of old MOther Earth News mags from the seventies I guess I'd better find and dust off, for ideas.

  11. I first arrived in 68 on R&R and then let almost thirty years and a Colombian wife pass, before returning while on a whim on one of the "back to Vietnam" visits that was popular at the time. I was in Hong Kong talking with some folks who mentioned Koh Samui as a place to kick back. Ended up going and staying at Munchies for a month. That started a return for a couple of months yearly vacation to explore Thailand and Southeast Asia.

I ran into a younger lady than I that grabbed my heart and just would not let go. ok ok I was a tough sell to her at first. She was willing to sell me treks or elephant rides but not even go to lunch with me. But persistence and my inate charm :D won out over the course of a few years.

Now after 4 years of marriage and stuck in INS limbo we can't even visit Thailand (or anywhere else outside of the US) till her green card arrives. (she came on a fiance visa) Well she did like California last year, and this year its off to my home state of Florida to go visit family and mickeys land, its still not Thailand. But we've some faith in immigration and actually got a letter from the place our file was sent to speed things up as our local office has been years behind. Letter told us that the file was being transferred to another site to speed things up :o

  12. Mitsubishi is the best home air-con in Thailand. :o

Fully agree. Ask anyone. Best compressors, best performance, lowest power consumption. 20 dezibel according to datasheet.

Basically all japanese brands made in thailand are very reliable if they have Mitsubishi compressors which is a standard.

    Carrier ?? quality ??

Basically I see folks are putting a lot of single room units in a home. What about central air con. I kinda want to put a heat pump in the home we'll build in a few years.

I think I'd like a heat pump so as to provide a little warmth on the occasional Chiang Mai cool night.

  13. mogoso, you're the one that is ignorant with your response. Grow up and show some kind of respect for the dead and you might even learn how to spell words you don't know.

    1 entry found for denizens.

    den·i·zen  Audio pronunciation of "denizens" ( P )  Pronunciation Key  (dn-zn)

    n.

      1. An inhabitant; a resident: denizens of Monte Carlo.

      2. One that frequents a particular place: a bar and its denizens.

      3. Ecology. An animal or a plant naturalized in a region.

      4. Chiefly British. A foreigner who is granted rights of residence and sometimes of citizenship.

    I

I see you went to Dictionary.com try scrooling down to the Merriam-webster definition you'll see it as N inhabitant. As I have a pocket Merriam- webster on my desk its the one I use. Before you call someone ignorant, look in the mirror

First please look at your definitions, number 2 one that frequents a particular place, you utilize a bar for the frequent place, I utilize a country. Number three states animal, of which man is a member of, unless of course you'd be more comfortable in the vegetable category.

Secondly, the point is not to deride the dead, but a poke at those with nationalist inferiority complexes who always abase those from the US.

I look at what Europe has given the world over the past 100 years or so and what the US has, and I'll take the US.

Lets see facism, socialism and nazism, which in turn brought us such leaders as Hitler who killed or caused the death of millions, Stalin same thing. Which lead to such leaders as Mao and Pol Pot which lead to deaths of millions with the imported philosophys from Europe.

Now go ahead and defend those leaders, and the deaths they caused in the tens of millions, and I'll defend the US and its actions.

  15. We went to the Auto show the first part of December. A friend of my wifes wated us to find out info about this car. When I questioned the sales ladies about when will this car hit the market, they said they did not know.  the other day I saw one on the road. Just proves my point what I said two years ago, that the sales ladies that sell cars in thailand do not know Didley squat about product knowledge. Would not last one month in the U.S.

    Barry

Which one, the car or the saleslady? :o

  16. Is it just my imagination, or do the deaths of foreigners in Thailand seem to be on the increase?  :o

Whist many argue the itelligence of the denezens of The US. It seems that among the many visitors to LOS, they're less likely to "fall" off balconeys, either hammer someone or get hammered to death, die in a motorcycle accident, have the misfortune to stand under the wrong coconut tree or any other natural or unnatural misfortune.

Says a lot for being ignorant. :D

  17. Driving on Samui has become something of a trial. The number of vehicles has increased so dramatically over the last four years that high speed crashes are a rarity as no one (except mini-bus drivers and lorry drivers who have their own set of rules) can drive that fast any more!

The mud on the road at the southern end of Cheweng beach was always a fun trip in the jeep. Its been long paved since then, so its just another street. Although its been five years since I've been there, the more I think of Koh Samui the more I think of a Joni Mitchell song lyric," they've paved paradise and put in a parking lot"

  18. We speak English, as its spoken in the US.

Followed by Spainish, (which she calls Mexican) shes trying to learn basic phrases. I've promised her a trip to South America before we return to Thailand. She wants to go to Machu Picchu, ( I wanna go to my farm) which I'm not adverse to but I hope its not changed in the way Stonehenge changed. When I was young you could wander all around Stonehenge , but today its hands off with a fence circling the site.

When I was young at Machu Picchu we simply stayed outta sight and spent a chilly night in our sleeping bags

Sooner or later we get around to Thai., which in my case is rudirmentary, at best.

  19. With all those Uni's.....

How come Yanks are so dumb?

Oooh, Ouch,  I can feel the flames from here.......  :o  :D  :D

I don't think yanks are so dumb, their education is the same as euros, GIGO. (garbage in garbage out) One problem is as I see it the average person in the US puts little or no thought about the European countries, or any foriegn country for that matter (except maybe Mexico for the immigrants) While Euros constantly harp about the US condeming it for one reason or another. Kyoto seems to be a hot topic, but 15 Euro countries have already stated they're not going to meet the guideslines set for 2010, yet continue to yammer at the US.

I remember one British newspaper demanding the right of Euros to vote in US elections.

I've spent a bit of time in europe and I can't see where on the average their any smarter than the yanks, just a different set of life skills and a greater dependency on the teat of goverment. But fear not the US is turning more to the left despite the outward appearance of a conservative goverment.

  20. Excellent points, stevesuphan! I've been to a few Thai funerals myself and, yes, they differed from the west. I think the west would do well to understand death in a different, truer light. It's not the end all but a new beginning. With proper understanding the morbidity would be completely released and the idea of celebrating it instead would not seem like heretical concept. It does now, though!

Went to Wat Doi Saket one day and found ourselves at the start of a funeral service for a monk. We were invited to hold onto a rope held onto by 200 other folks to walk body out to the pyre. Seemed a happy event for most folk, food for sale etc

As always things done by other cultures fascinate me

  21. Contrary to some of what has been said here, Modern World History is taught at Thai state schools.

BTW: I hope George W Bush didnt study at any of those TOP HOT American universities! On becoming president he couldnt even think of the names of five of the worlds capital cities!

W attended Yale, where his GPA was higher than John Kerrys and Harvard Law. Also learn to fly fighter jets. Not a mental midget, just not quick to the answer

Haven't you ever had a mind fart when nothing comes instantly especially when you've alot on your mind other that the caital of Nigeria, Chad, Tonga, Borneo or Honduras

BTW those schools have an extremly large foriegn student population going to them to get an education.

  22. Well..i am not in the same situation...so my points of view might not carry much weight......But still here i go....

It is a mather of respect and a mather of trying to understand how people born and growing up in this country/region is influenced by their peers, religion, culture and circumstances......

It is in no way comparable to most of us "falang" expiriences and upbringing.

    Nicely said.

We've been sending my MIL the same amount of money per month for four years. Three of those years she had to care for her sick mother until her mothers death last year.

Shes added to the size of her house, built a fence around her property painted, and taken care of our son (from my wives first marriage) on the 10,000 baht we send. She asks for nothing extra, provides the food for her dead husbands mother (who lives elsewhere in village in her own home (thats to be given to my wife, on our next visit, whenever that'll be))

MIL does all of our land buying, which my wife (excluding the first 7 rai) has paid for outta the money she makes here in the US.

MIL has taken a part time job to stay busy, after realizing she wasn't going to become happy trying to make money in small scale agriculture.

When her family (brothers and sisters and their kids) need help it comes outta MIL money, theres no asking us, as my wonderful wife has strong feeelings about helping people who didn't help her after an auto accident and her long recovery. My wife forgives, but doesn't forget, so only one uncle and one cousin are in her good graces. I couldn't be happier with the arrangement, after the gov't here gets their act together, and our son comes here we'll cut mommas income a little. Momma also knows when we move back to Thailand, they'll be another cut in income as ours will lessen. To this extent she saves a few thousand baht a month to build a nest egg.

All Thai families aren't the same, trying to drain the farang isn't an automatic. I knew going into a relationship with a thailady that she was responsible for her family, ie I was responsible as I entered into her family. Accept her, accept all it entails. But not to the point of stupidity shown in other posts.

Theres not the socialist system in place that europe and the US provide as partial assistance for their citizens as they age, theres not the monthly social security check coming to the aged.

Thailand does have the cheap medical, but other than the odd program, your on your own, and have only family.

The little money we provided has enabled her to make her life a little better, that makes me feel good, as life isn't only about ourselves.
