  1. Thanks for the info, I will be working with FPV not FTP. A good source let me know that FPV is run more professionally so they may help me out with what I need.

If i do end up having to leave would I be able to go to any country close by? I have heard before that to get a visa you need to be in you own country but I am not sure that is the case since I got a visa for Thailand while I was stationed in Japan. However that was an official visa category F so maybe for that there is an exception due to agreement between US and Japan for military.

  2. I am currently on a 1 year extension on my ED visa. Soon I will be putting in some time with FPV in Pattaya. I understand that even for volunteer work i will need a work permit and for work permit I will need B visa. Will I be able to obtain new visa without leaving Thailand?

  3. Also of interest to the above post (but not really the OP) is financial spread betting.

Spread betting is gambling, its classed as such and in the west you dont pay income taxes on it. However spread betting on markets is no different to trading in any other way. You make a bet that a position will rise or fall.

So if betting in Thailand is illegal, why is stock trading not illegal, when does betting become investing and when is it gambling ??

Trading stocks is buying and selling part of a company. Sure you can say you are betting that it will go up or down but there is more than one meaning to a word. You could even say when you drive your motorbike down Sukhumvit you are betting you will make it to your destination safely.

  4. Half of the work done by foreigners in Thailand is without proper documentation, visas, work permits. If I use the internet to make business abroad from Thailand, I am considered working. Many Government schools hire foreigners thru an agency, they will not hire you individually, no work permit is issued, you run the risk of an immigration visit, but rarely would that happen, It was explained to me how it works.

The school director has a budget, he pays the agency and inflated amount, documented, then the agency slips him some of the money back, the agency pays you less than they receive, and all are allowed to stay in business. The agency guaranteed me work teaching, they drove me to the school so I would know where it was, no WP will be issued. Since then (they have told a number of foreign employees that the WP is in the process) none have ever received one. So school director is breaking the law, agency is breaking the law and I would be also if I took the job. When I applied to the school directly, by passing the agency, I was told they could not hire me. How do they get away with it you may ask?

They get away with it cos they are Thai, simple as that. You should know by now that the rules/laws that exist here in Thailand are usually selectively applied. Deal with it, accept it, fight against it, ignore it, do whatever you think works best for yourself . . . it's not going to change.

I don't think they get away with it because they are Thai, I think it is more of a loophole. Seems like the school is not actually hiring the teacher but contracting through the agency. The arrangement is between the school and the agency so essentially the teacher is working for the agency. So really it looks like the school is operating within the law and the agency is not.

  5. I understand if the parents allow the kids to drive, but if the kids drive without their parents knowledge, that is crossing the line. Many of you have kids and teenagers and all of us were teenagers at one point. For the most of us our parents did not condone the things we did, and if we were caught by them we would have been punished.

So if parents are held accountable for our actions, being caught by the authorities is a better deal, you get a walk while mom and dad get jail time.

  6. I use a fan in conjunction with an AC and set the AC to high of 29 degrees.

Place the fan right behind the air flow of the AC to have the cooled air blown directly at you.

Whenever the AC compressor kicks in, which is not very often you will be cooled when it does.

And to compensate the higher temp setting, you will be cooled by the fan.

That's only 1 degree higher than what i normally have my AC on and its usually too cold anyway.

  7. Banning it is really pointless, you can use a proxy server and still log on. There is also magicjack and vonage. Don't know much about magicjack but the vonage phone adapter connects to your router just like any other device. They really can't stop that or even know that you are using one.

  8. Jet fighters can do much more than fight other jet fighters. Yes I am sure the US would come to the aid of Thailand in the event of an attack. Maybe you have heard of Cobra Gold, a military training exercise conducted every year which runs scenarios such as natural disasters, piracy, military threats... These train high level military officers from Thailand and neighboring countries to respond with cooperation amongst each other. The officers need tools such as jets to accomplish heir missions.

  9. This is an old thread but I think worth an update. I just scheduled internet connection with BTV, cost is 1500 installation, 2500 modem, about 1550 monthly for 10 Mb line. This price includes TV service as well. the prices including installation were posted right on the table so Thai or farang is same price. I went to ToT and she told me 1600 to install and when i opened my wallet the price changed to 3800 to install. As far as quality of service and actual speeds, I don't know yet.

  10. As stated earlier the sponsor cannot tell the person they must leave the country. The sponsor can cease support if they chose to do so, however a statement has been made to the embassy guaranteeing support. I am not sure of the details in the EU countries but I know for Japan is is very specific about living expenses and responsibility in the event the visitor commits a crime. The smart thing for your "friend" to do is change her ticket and go home.

  11. You are deliberately being obtrusive so you can say 'government' bears the blaim instead of 'courts'?

You are quoting the segmentation of the government, the machine of the state, not that the 'government' as in 'the political party in charge' is to blame.

Maybe it is a language thing?

That is not being obtrusive, I am supporting my argument with facts. The courts are part of the government that is a fact.

I am not trying to blame anyone, it is a decision that was made by the courts. My personal view on whether is was a sound decision or not was never stated. If the decision requires review that would fall to the court of appeals which is still part of the government. Then the supreme court can review the finding from the court of appeals. It is a government body performing a government function, whichever political party is in majority has no bearing on this.

However, the poster blaming the 'government' earlier sounded much like other posters blaming the government (aka Abhisit) for any/many wrong-doings of other government agencies that the ministers have no rule over (or, shouldn't have direct rule over - separation of power).

    Hence the objection.

Point taken. I can see how he appears to be biased against government. When I first read it it just seemed like he was making a joke about corruption.

  13. It's good to see the government making an example of poor people who steal. It won't be tolerated.

The sooner people realise that only politicians and police are allowed to steal the better.

The courts are not the government...

Apparently you never heard of the judicial branch...

Apparently you have not? The judges are not fired and re-appointed whenever a government is elected. They are hired as any other civil servant employee.

Being "fired" and reappointed or not has nothing to do with the election of government the courts are the judicial branch of the government. Read the link and become informed http://www.thailawforum.com/articles/briggsgov.html

And to make it easier i cut the section:

The Judicial Branch of the Government: The Courts The judicial branch of the government consists of all the courts of Thailand. The courts are independent bodies, intended to serve as a "check and balance" on both the Executive and Legislative branches of government. The judiciary hears cases involving actual conflicts between individuals, between individuals and businesses, or between individuals or businesses and the government, and decides each case on its own merits. When a law applies to a case being considered, the court will apply the terms of the law, but if it feels the law may be contrary to the Constitution, it has the duty to refer the case to the Constitutional Court for a determination of whether there is such a conflict. Other than in cases of conflict with the Constitution, the courts apply the laws as enacted, and determine how the facts they find in hearing the evidence are affected by the laws. The courts also review executive actions of the government, how the executive branch carries out its functions, and can render judgments against the governmental bodies in appropriate cases.

  14. "Stone had fled into Thailand since 2005." - can someone explain what that means??

or is this just an example of the standard of reporting that will surround this item?

Exactly. Such bad, ambiguous English. I presume it means he fled up-country, i.e. into the heart/countryside of Thailand. But it could mean something else as others have indicated - that the crime was committed in another country and he "fled into Thailand".

But I'm fairly sure that's not what is meant.

Just one native English speaker - that's all it would take The Nation to get it right.

I would say that it means he came from another country. I am not sure, but I would guess that since he was arrested by immigration police the charges are from outside Thailand and he was detained for extradition.
