- Certain countries which have a vested interest in sowing discord in the free world.
- Some people/groups who wish to cause civil unrest for political means or profit.
I think once the free world settles and has some recovery there will be a worldwide investigation. We will see that some countries were involved in promoting false information. EU has already identified Russia. Others have indicated Iran and China. Facebook purged hundreds of disinformation actors.
I strongly believe that a warm, if not unbearably hot, environment is the path forward to humankind.
You may disagree, but how dare you criticize my opinion (as outlandish as it may be) as a lie!
Seriously, everyone is entitled to an opinion. As a person, you have to decide which you will subscribe too. Censorship is not the solution.

In the US, free speech is a misnomer. Look up the first amendment and see the restrictions.
Free speech is guaranteed by the gov't, but not by me (an individual).
I'm too tired at this time to research details of the 1st Amendment, but if you are so kind, please list your thoughts on the restrictions.

You're behind the times, my friend ????
The Germany of today has stringent laws against free speech, known as "Volksverhetzung".
Understandably after all they've been through, the Germans worry about fascism taking hold again.
My point is that, traditionally, the Dutch have been seen as more tolerant and willing to trust in the ability of people to make their own decisions, whether than be the drugs they smoke or the ideas they hear.
I live in the US. People, in certain states (each about the size of a typical European country) also feel that individual rights should trump. Look where they are now. Many "stupid" people are ignorant, and are infected with covid. Many are hospitalized, others are dying.
Honestly, I gave up feeling any empathy for those who think they know better than those that have made it their profession to guard and advise against pandemics.
If the Dutch have a plan, let it be their own. Good luck.

I'm in central Bangkok, and even here True has told me that I can't get over 100mbps in my building.
You are in a building sharing a single cable (from the street) with with many other residents.
Either broker a deal with the other residents to get them to go entertain themselves outside of the building so that you can surf the internet alone, or consider finding yourself another domicile... preferably a single 'family' home.

As a Dutchman, the slippery slope you need to worry about when you start feeling the urge to control the speech of others is that you might wake up as a German.
Ouch.
You must be an old gent to have bad vibes against the Germans.

Just now, robblok said:The problem is a lot of people are not smart enough or want to believe lies. Just look at the USA. My point is actually more about proven lies then a different of opinion. Should people be allowed to spread lies or should something be done about it.
Its a really slippery slope, but when lies are this blatant and the damage from them big should there not be something done.
Unfortunately, one of the tenets of a free society is free speech.
An individual has to use their own intellect to survive in today's world. I guess one could say the same about yesterday's world too.

A guy from 80 years old a "homeopathic doctor" was saying that there was no covid, that there were no people on the intensive care and that doctors were faking it all and getting 20.000 euros per patient.
This was in the news and readily spread on social media. Should these kinds of nutcases that are proven wrong (take them to an IC let them see the people there) be procecuted or at least be banned from the use of internet. Its just horrible how so many of those nutcases keep creating fake news and undermining all confidence.
Fake news really is a problem and its becoming bigger and bigger. I dont like the alternative of censorship. But if news is proven lies there should be some consequences to it IMHO.
I'm surprised that you read the (whole) article. Just disregard it... as opposed to forwarding such nonsense on TV.

Be smart and use your own intellect to discard false information. Pass this advise on to your peers/friends.
Btw, I had covid... and subsequently a viral pneumonia... I survived not only the initial issue, but also the pneumonia. Today I feel great.
I am looking forward to getting the vaccine, even though I have the probability of being immune from the virus for the next 4-5 months. Long term, I have know idea what to expect. I know that I will keep wearing a mask and performing good hygiene (i.e. washing hands).

Thankfully I caught this thread on page 2.
When I'm in Thailand, I borrow the services (fiber optic) offered to my BIL. It is fast enough to peruse the internet, and to stream Netflix.
I pity the person (let's just say it, the fool) that requires something faster.

I thought you were looking for squirrels.
Magazines... well that's a different subject. If only your subject line had been clearer.
P.S. I do have a year's full of NG mags; will you be willing to pay shipping from US to your location?

which branch and how long ago?
What was required
The first time was in Bangkok, circa 2004. The branch was located on Sukhumvit Road, past Soi 4, and if I recall, before Soi 6. The bank put me through the hassle of having my passport certified by the US Embassy. Other than that, not so difficult.
Later, in 2013 (maybe 2015?), I transferred my account (got a new account number) to Bangkok Bank in Korat. Quite simple to do; no need to go to the embassy. Yes, I had to complete the US government paperwork (I'm a US citizen); still no big deal.

TR? Tourist Visa? If that's the case, then this is not a problem... well, at least not for me. I opened a savings account at Bangkok Bank.

Tried them.. Biggest problems I'm facing are... Wife is Thai so filing status is uncertain.
Income is SSDI and its website says qualify for EITC and child credits but online app doesn't permit it.
Only income is 12864 yearly from SSDI. No other filing claims except that one and dependents care. About 18000 in credits for children and EITC if applied. Also uncertain about disability credits. Could be more.
Either way. I need some help with someone in Thailand in same situation that has filed before.
You need to apply for an ITIN (Individual Tax Identification Number) for your wife.

I only questioned it because 3BB advertises the speed as up to 1GB and I'm only getting 1/5th of that.
Who cares what is advertised. What level of service (i.e. internet speed) are you paying for?
My provider also can deliver 1GB speeds, but I only have signed up for the 600MB plan. You get what you pay for.
Also, on a different note, the speed of incoming data can be affected by the 3rd-party server doling out the data itself... something that you (or 3BB) will never have any control over.
P.S. I am happy with my internet speed on my computer; 84.1 Mbps download, 17.5 Mbps upload. I have at any given about 10 devices on my LAN; they collectively share the bandwidth.

How much energy is used to take average plastic waste and convert into bricks? Is it cost effective? Or is this adding more C02 to the atmosphere?
For a long time, plastic has been used (err, recycled) to make other products, including planks for park benches, but this is a gimmick. The cost of doing such conversions is prohibitive, other than for scoring PR points.
The plastic industry needs to be held accountable for collecting (and recycling?) their product. The task of recycling should not be passed onto the consumer.
P.S. Similar to Thailand, my local community has also come down on the distribution of plastic bags at the supermarket. But rather than ban them outright, a $0.05 (1.5 Baht) surcharge is assessed for each bag used. Not much of an incentive to stop using plastic.

What a joke.
Is that a kiddy day care center?
No air conditioning, no forced air... it looks like a ad-hoc jail.
P.S. This is what my "field hospital" (medical center) looked like. This was the view from my 3m x 3m partitioned space. There was medical equipment for conducting blood pressure checks, oxygen intake, and I even had my own portable O2 pump.

I didn't travel to TH until 2016 changover has always tasted bad to me. Just a couple bottles gave me a headache hangover. I'm an experienced homebrewer and was even offered a job at a microbrewery some 10 years ago. If any of you have missed the epic rise in beer taste and quality in the micro brew craze of the last 10-15 years in USA you are not even remotely qualified to rate any beer.
Riiight!

No way in heck would I install a 3rd-party app onto my phone.

Everyone is going to die from the Doomsday Virus, that’s why everyone’s life needs to be ruined, the economy needs to be made non-existent and the single greatest transfer of wealth in the history of the world has to happen.
You see, making people unable to go to the gym, or drink alcohol at a restaurant is the number one way to defeat the virus. It’s been proven!
It’s a mild flu virus with a greater than 99% survival rate, so everyone needs to have their life ruined. That’s just plain sensibility.
I'm sitting back humming "money for nothing".
My investments over 2020 are up by $150K. Somehow, someway, I know I am falling behind.
The end is near.

Call the police, file a report.
If you recover the money, or even learn of who used the card, then that's gravy.
In the end, you may have to simply cut your losses.
P.S. You may also have to slap your wife across the head. But that action may land you in jail.

There is no point in arguing with people who believe in conspiracy theories.
Every human being at this point in time knows why there are lockdowns and bending the curve down. We need to allow the authorities to deal with these non-mask wearing nincompoops. Hopefully they will be in Thailand when they do it where there are some teeth to the laws.
I look forward to the time when these anti vaxing people stay in their own countries and we never have to run into them again while travelling.
I agree with you regarding theories. Viruses can be transmitted, whether COVID or the common cold (and sigh, even HIV).
There are instances when folks go out to eat/drink. I caught COVID (allegedly) from my brother, who exhibited no symptoms while we were out enjoying lunch. We had spent 6+ months off/on in the same venue... we began to trust each other, and those friends that we saw, at the same place, during the long expanse.
The only thing I could have done differently would have been to stay at home. Oh, wait, that may not have mattered; I met my brother in my bar/garage the very next day.
All I can suggest is to keep your "circle" of encounters as small as possible, and pray to get the vaccination is available as soon as possible.
COVID affects people differently; most recover, some do not. It's a mystery. Wear the "damn" mask.

Nothing is free. Surely the costs will come out of the pockets of all tax payers. Hardly seems right and/or fair.
