What is racist about that?  They should test high risk groups.

They should test those that are exhibiting COVID-19 symptoms. If a test proves positive, then the gov't should perform contact tracing to inform those that came in contact with the sick patient that they too may be infected.

That's how I was notified. I received a text message indicating that I may have come in contact with someone that has tested positive. My cell phone (number) was used to gauge my proximity to the infected person; the criteria used was 6 feet (2m) and for an exposure lasting more than 15 minutes.

Ironically, I received notice one day after I started feeling sick. When I tested, the results were positive. And I'm still alive, after the initial onset of symptoms 20 days ago.

  2. Wow. I think someday when I retire in LOS, I will maintain a US bank account (most likely with Schwab).

My family and I received our stimulus payment on Monday, 01/04... directly deposited to my BofA account. No sweat off my back.

I cannot believe that folks are using temporary TurboTax (or other tax-prep service) accounts, or are still relying on snail-mail to receive tax refunds (so 19th century). Plan ahead folks!... there might be another stimulus payment coming your way. Open an online account, and use it when dealing with the IRS.

So how is this $600 treated tax-wise on our 2021 1040 filed in 2022?

And is the first payment treated the same?

No tax liability is due on the $600, nor on the $1200 issued earlier in 2020.

There might (most likely) be a check-box to complete to indicate whether you have received the credit on the 2021 and 2022 tax-forms.

I'm in Chiangmai and have been trying to use the Thai Chana App where I can … but loads of venues do not have the App QR Code unfortunately.

    :shock1:

Be wary of scanning QR codes; your phone may catch a virus if you unsuspectingly download content that leads you to a malicious site.

    Read this:

  5. Bear with me....

So if you see this in the front of the note "@OOO" that's the 1000 Baht note. If you see "@OO", that's the 100 Baht note.

Okay, counting zeroes should be easy for anyone. Well, perhaps not everyone.

I do not read Thai, nor have the luxury (ha!) of having a Thai keyboard to enter the correct symbol on the bank notes. But I know the difference between "oh" and "oooh".

P.S. Maybe the odd shape for the 1000 Baht note is meant to assist the blind.

Please tell me when they were age 5 you let them in the sea alone and unattended.

You are still "dancing" around my question.

NO... I WOULD NOT LET my daughters (at any age) swim in the ocean when the sea is at its worst. But on a calm day, please, what is the harm.

Ridiculous over the top post. I disagree with the OPs main thrust but that is just a pitiful personal attack on a person showing (too much) concern for the well-being of kids.

The OP raised the bar by N cm. I lowered it by -N cm. Now we are even.

I do not need anyone stirring up fear for the sake of doing so. Just imagine if the OP were to state that we should drive on the highway at no more than 15 km/h, because otherwise there would be carnage. Surely you can agree that something like this would be a ridiculous argument. Allow children to swim in the ocean is the same.

If the seas were "violent", say due to an off-shore storm, then any normal parent would use common sense and either deny a child the opportunity to enter the water, or accompany the child. I have asked the OP to present an argument/justification for their position on the matter, and I'm still waiting. So should you.

You're funny, I wonder why lifeguards are at beaches in many places. I'm pretty sure you don't have kids the way you speak. because you survived doesn't make it right.

    I do have two daughters.

In my days as a youth, and even into adulthood, there were no lifeguards. Sure, you will find lifeguards in the more congested/popular beach destinations, but not everywhere.

P.S. You did not answer my question...

Please explain why you have a problem?

  9. Thank god the OP did not buy a Samsung car, otherwise we would really be reading some horrible words/thoughts.

[If you happen to be slow at things, Samsung does not make cars.]

I am on my second Samsung TV; first was a DLP, and after approximately 8 years, it failed. It was a thrill to toss it away at the landfill. I have bought another (still working to this day), and in addition, I also bought a stainless steel, french-door, style fridge. The latter works great, but I cannot say the same about the ice-maker.

In as far as my (second) TV, it is a 50" LED flat screen, and it still works fine after almost 5 years of usage. To replace it, with Samsung or other brand, will cost about $250-$350.... which I would classify as "whoop-tee-doo" money. My brother recently bought a 65" 4K LED (whatever) TV for $460.

I have a problem with a 5 and 7 yr old being left alone in the water. If I wasn't a beach person this would never cross my mind but since I see it daily it pisses me off.

Please explain why you have a problem?

I am a so-so swimmer; I do have a open-water diver's permit (aka PADI certification), but in seriousness, I would not consider myself a Johnny Weissmuller.

I grew up, between the ages of 5-7, living just a 150 meters from the beach (Formia, Italy). I swam all the time in the water, never with an "attached" parent. 200 meters off-shore was a sandbar, and due to curiosity, that was my destination.

It bothers me that YOU have so little faith in the ability of kids to navigate (no pun intended) through life. YOU should lock yourself in a closet, seal thyself from the world, and just perish in one manner or another. If you have kids, they should be raised by someone with a backbone.

Oh bother, now I have to find somewhere else to have a drink tonight. Is Cheers in Boston still open?

Seriously though the 'pub' scene in the UK has been under serious threat well before C-19 interfered. Every time I return another of my old haunts has gone. Turning them into kids playgrounds, pretending they are restaurants and taking more money off less customers has all but sealed their demise.

Shame really, makes me wonder what the social scene will be like in 50 years.

You're welcome to stop by my garage. I have a TV and soundbar mounted to the wall, and a fridge off to the side stocked with various beers. ????

  12. This whole episode reminds me of a time my wife and I booked a couple of nights at a "resort" in Hua Hin. On the first night, we were tired from the journey to the hotel, and it was raining heavily. We decided to order food dishes listed on the room service menu. When my wife called in the order, the hotel staff indicated that "Sorry, no can do. It is raining. Cannot get food."

Obviously I was not amused. The next day we checked out.

This is a true story, not some fabricated anecdote. I have my wife as a witness. The hotel, if it still exists, was ironically called Sabai Sabai Resort.

Perhaps on my next entry into Thailand, I too will spend a day or two in jail. :whistling:

Exactly. Don't p1ss off backpackers. They are the future Bill Gates - Elon Musk - Richard Branson types in this world.

"Backpackers" who make their fortunes will often return to or even invest in countries they have fond memories of from their youthful days.

If I recall, a backpacker was the inventor of the first ever deodorant stick; I believe he won a Nobel Prize for this.

In another "fact", which may simply be an urban legend, another backpacker came up with the concept of using deodorant, but also taking a shower at least once daily.

We owe so much to backpackers.

    Actually, not really.
