What is racist about that? They should test high risk groups.
They should test those that are exhibiting COVID-19 symptoms. If a test proves positive, then the gov't should perform contact tracing to inform those that came in contact with the sick patient that they too may be infected.
That's how I was notified. I received a text message indicating that I may have come in contact with someone that has tested positive. My cell phone (number) was used to gauge my proximity to the infected person; the criteria used was 6 feet (2m) and for an exposure lasting more than 15 minutes.
Ironically, I received notice one day after I started feeling sick. When I tested, the results were positive. And I'm still alive, after the initial onset of symptoms 20 days ago.

Wow. I think someday when I retire in LOS, I will maintain a US bank account (most likely with Schwab).
My family and I received our stimulus payment on Monday, 01/04... directly deposited to my BofA account. No sweat off my back.
I cannot believe that folks are using temporary TurboTax (or other tax-prep service) accounts, or are still relying on snail-mail to receive tax refunds (so 19th century). Plan ahead folks!... there might be another stimulus payment coming your way. Open an online account, and use it when dealing with the IRS.

So how is this $600 treated tax-wise on our 2021 1040 filed in 2022?
And is the first payment treated the same?
No tax liability is due on the $600, nor on the $1200 issued earlier in 2020.
There might (most likely) be a check-box to complete to indicate whether you have received the credit on the 2021 and 2022 tax-forms.

Not Thailand related, but US related (in particular Maryland).
On Tuesday, 12/26, I spent an afternoon in the ER. Prior to that, I self-treated my Covid symptoms at home. The reason for the ER visit was to deal with a viral pneumonia that I acquired during my bout with the initial onslaught of illness (fever, coughing, congestion) which started 12/17. I was transferred from the ER to Baltimore Convention Center, where the University of Maryland and Johns Hopkins University jointly run a field hospital. I was there for 4 nights/4 days; I'm back home now having mostly recovered.
While there, I was taken well care of, given meds (Remdesivir) to fight issues related to the pneumonia, and given round the clock med care and meals.
The facility, although somewhat spartan, was huge (equivalent of perhaps 2 - 2.5 football pitches). See attached pic from my "room". I suspect the facility could have treated up 400 patients at once, although from what I could witness, there were probably no more than 50 or so patients there at any one time. This field hospital allowed for the more seriously ill to be housed at regular hospitals, whereas those that are good candidates for a speedy recovery could be housed at the field hospital.
My symptoms are mostly gone; however I still have another 9 days of self-quarantine to go. Covid is not a death sentence; most people recover.

Whether Trump vetoes the $900 billion stimulus package and/or the $1.4 trillion (?) government spending package for FY21 is irrelevant. More than two-thirds of Congress passed the bills, effectively making it veto-proof. Worst case, the bill goes into effect Jan 03, 2021.

Be wary of scanning QR codes; your phone may catch a virus if you unsuspectingly download content that leads you to a malicious site.

Bear with me....
So if you see this in the front of the note "@OOO" that's the 1000 Baht note. If you see "@OO", that's the 100 Baht note.
Okay, counting zeroes should be easy for anyone. Well, perhaps not everyone.
I do not read Thai, nor have the luxury (ha!) of having a Thai keyboard to enter the correct symbol on the bank notes. But I know the difference between "oh" and "oooh".
P.S. Maybe the odd shape for the 1000 Baht note is meant to assist the blind.

Please tell me when they were age 5 you let them in the sea alone and unattended.
You are still "dancing" around my question.
NO... I WOULD NOT LET my daughters (at any age) swim in the ocean when the sea is at its worst. But on a calm day, please, what is the harm.

Ridiculous over the top post. I disagree with the OPs main thrust but that is just a pitiful personal attack on a person showing (too much) concern for the well-being of kids.
The OP raised the bar by N cm. I lowered it by -N cm. Now we are even.
I do not need anyone stirring up fear for the sake of doing so. Just imagine if the OP were to state that we should drive on the highway at no more than 15 km/h, because otherwise there would be carnage. Surely you can agree that something like this would be a ridiculous argument. Allow children to swim in the ocean is the same.
If the seas were "violent", say due to an off-shore storm, then any normal parent would use common sense and either deny a child the opportunity to enter the water, or accompany the child. I have asked the OP to present an argument/justification for their position on the matter, and I'm still waiting. So should you.

You're funny, I wonder why lifeguards are at beaches in many places. I'm pretty sure you don't have kids the way you speak. because you survived doesn't make it right.
I do have two daughters.
In my days as a youth, and even into adulthood, there were no lifeguards. Sure, you will find lifeguards in the more congested/popular beach destinations, but not everywhere.
P.S. You did not answer my question...
Please explain why you have a problem?

Thank god the OP did not buy a Samsung car, otherwise we would really be reading some horrible words/thoughts.
[If you happen to be slow at things, Samsung does not make cars.]
I am on my second Samsung TV; first was a DLP, and after approximately 8 years, it failed. It was a thrill to toss it away at the landfill. I have bought another (still working to this day), and in addition, I also bought a stainless steel, french-door, style fridge. The latter works great, but I cannot say the same about the ice-maker.
In as far as my (second) TV, it is a 50" LED flat screen, and it still works fine after almost 5 years of usage. To replace it, with Samsung or other brand, will cost about $250-$350.... which I would classify as "whoop-tee-doo" money. My brother recently bought a 65" 4K LED (whatever) TV for $460.

I have a problem with a 5 and 7 yr old being left alone in the water. If I wasn't a beach person this would never cross my mind but since I see it daily it pisses me off.
Please explain why you have a problem?
I am a so-so swimmer; I do have a open-water diver's permit (aka PADI certification), but in seriousness, I would not consider myself a Johnny Weissmuller.
I grew up, between the ages of 5-7, living just a 150 meters from the beach (Formia, Italy). I swam all the time in the water, never with an "attached" parent. 200 meters off-shore was a sandbar, and due to curiosity, that was my destination.
It bothers me that YOU have so little faith in the ability of kids to navigate (no pun intended) through life. YOU should lock yourself in a closet, seal thyself from the world, and just perish in one manner or another. If you have kids, they should be raised by someone with a backbone.

Be wary of scanning a QR code; you never know what you are scanning. Scammers have been known to use these for subversive purposes.
Here's an article you can read for further information:

Oh bother, now I have to find somewhere else to have a drink tonight. Is Cheers in Boston still open?
Seriously though the 'pub' scene in the UK has been under serious threat well before C-19 interfered. Every time I return another of my old haunts has gone. Turning them into kids playgrounds, pretending they are restaurants and taking more money off less customers has all but sealed their demise.
Shame really, makes me wonder what the social scene will be like in 50 years.
You're welcome to stop by my garage. I have a TV and soundbar mounted to the wall, and a fridge off to the side stocked with various beers. ????

Boring! They should place a ramp at the exits from the main highway so that cars jump over those coming in the opposite direction. Did you not ever play matchbox car games as a kid? As the other post states, what can possibly go wrong?

This whole episode reminds me of a time my wife and I booked a couple of nights at a "resort" in Hua Hin. On the first night, we were tired from the journey to the hotel, and it was raining heavily. We decided to order food dishes listed on the room service menu. When my wife called in the order, the hotel staff indicated that "Sorry, no can do. It is raining. Cannot get food."
Obviously I was not amused. The next day we checked out.
This is a true story, not some fabricated anecdote. I have my wife as a witness. The hotel, if it still exists, was ironically called Sabai Sabai Resort.
Perhaps on my next entry into Thailand, I too will spend a day or two in jail.

19 minutes ago, spidermike007 said:With the revelation about the 500,000 baht required for a tourist to visit Thailand, it feels like it is the straw that may break the camels back. There are already so many restrictions in place, hurdles to jump over, quarantine to endure, one wonders who thinks up these road blocks.
With the restrictions that are already in place, few are going to be visiting over the next year or so. To place additional road blocks directly into the path of the few remaining tourists who may want to brave all of this nonsense, seems like the height of hubris and insanity. Some of us, were hoping that the current crisis, that threatens 20% of the Thai economy derived from tourism, might be enough to bring some humility to immigration. The opposite seems to be happening. It feels like the "TCOTU" (Thailand is the center of the universe) is alive and well.
They keep droning on, and on, and on about the desire to bring in well heeled tourists. There are countless things the government could be doing, if they wanted to attract the high quality tourists. First they need to figure out a way to attract tourism, WITHOUT quarantine. That is fairly simple. A very reliable lab based test in the home nation, with test results before you board the plane. Then a simple antigen test at the airport. It takes 15 minutes for results. Sure, Thailand would have to invest in the test kits. Some general would have to be willing to part with a few million dollars. Each test itself, only cost $5 with the new Abbott test, which is available now. And there is some risk. But, it is fairly low, with two different kinds of tests. And some risk needs to be taken, to put millions of people back to work. Stores, restaurants, and hotels just keep closing every week. There is an attrition factor that is mind boggling, especially on Samui, in Phuket, Pattaya, and Chiang Mai.
Then they could get on to reform. Sacrifices need to be made. I do not hear ANY discussion about what sacrifices Thailand is willing to make, to get the tourists, and that multi trillion baht cash cow back. These issues and problems were becoming apparent long before Covid. And none were being addressed. That is part of my point. Tourism had been declining for years already. The numbers were up. But the quality of tourist was way down. And according to everyone I spoke to last year, the year before and the year before that, income was way, way down. So, "this blame it all on Covid scenario" is somewhat disengenuous. Sure, Covid is huge. And the drop now is stunning. But, my point is there were plenty of issues prior to Covid. And are any of them being addressed?Oh my Buddha... it is a temporary measure! It is an effort to dissuade tourism at this time.
Note: "at this time" refers to the ongoing period of the global pandemic to which many western nations seem to want to ignore.

Exactly. Don't p1ss off backpackers. They are the future Bill Gates - Elon Musk - Richard Branson types in this world.
"Backpackers" who make their fortunes will often return to or even invest in countries they have fond memories of from their youthful days.
If I recall, a backpacker was the inventor of the first ever deodorant stick; I believe he won a Nobel Prize for this.
In another "fact", which may simply be an urban legend, another backpacker came up with the concept of using deodorant, but also taking a shower at least once daily.
We owe so much to backpackers.
Actually, not really.

No, it does not work that way. However, you could divorce your wife now that you are living in Thailand, then do a prenup, and remarry her (should you dare).
Why would you need a prenup if living in Thailand? It is not like she will be able to grab your assets that are sitting in the US.
P.S. I just Googled; you can do a post-nup agreement.

Seriously, fever and cold sweats could be caused by something other than drinking. Perhaps the OP has become a Type-2 diabetic?
The OP should see a doctor, not seek advice on TVF.
