  1. MrKrabs,

This is just one source for rentals of short or long term. There may be more, but this is the quickest I know for your urgent request for housing.

It would not be impossible to rent a long term rental property for a higher price, dependent on the landloard, but not out of the question.

Get yorself checked in for the night at a hotel of your choice. Will probably be too late to make any contacts tonight.

  2. Bamee noodles are yellow in colour and made with red eggs.

I like Bamee Nam (with hot water soup) and also Bamee Hang (no water or soup).

Can be had with red pork, or many variations.

Across the street from the Old Dutch is pretty good Bamee IMO.

Kaew Sai Kai is Steamed Rice with Chicken, some warm sauce, and green herbs.

Cow Sai GKai = Steamed white Rice, with or side of, Chicken

Unsubstantiated rumor that chickens may be scarse these days in CR.

Have to quash that Colonel's recipe rumor so the chicks might return.

  3. Junior Smples is Coming to Chiang Rai ! OMG

I just luv Pettycoat Junction. :whistling: "Thought I found True Love, and thhhhhhhhhp You was Gone"

Anyone think he might visit the Domino Group. Seems more poplar than Checkarboard Squares here in CR.

    No palgaerizing now VF.

Actually not disgruntled. Just playin the game the Playa way :Dave:

  4. Sorry for this late reply. Was intending for it to post at 3:00am after a nite out with the girls.

Here is a light hearted humerous banter and reply.

We must have a Bull here. Maybe more than One. Haven't seen it, but have discovered it's excrement and feces spewed about.

Where there is a Cow, there must be a Bull.

This is definately not Cow excrement called CS, it is different and is called BS in English, and Bak Yai, Kee Kwi in Thai.

I know BS when I see it.

The Chickens must be "On the Lamb" or scea's Sheep since they heard about the Colonel's new chicken coating recipe.

Ducks are out of the water and over at the Little Duck accomodations since the thing with the local water quality.

Chiang Rai is not unlike Khao San Road. There is a fair share of Budget Accomodations available.

Just follow the "back packers" and ask for the "Cheap Charlie" or "Kee Nee Ow" discount rate. There reportedly have been some Pigs spotted at those locations.

You probably won't have to look to hard to find a Pig there.

No Need to drive a car and contribute to the smoke, pollution, traffic, and parking problems in the huge metropolis of Chiang Rai.

Becoming Cosmopolitin like Bangkok, Sydney, London, New York and San Francisco.

Instead it has been suggested to utilize the efficiant local Mass Transit system and the highly accredited local tour operators.

No worries mate, relax and enjoy the high speed mini van trip that will quickly whisk you and companions on the ride of a lifetime.

If not a mini van, then take one of our very VIP buses that will rock you too and fro as it meanders thru the traffic maze.

Be sure to bring all your Gas masks and other respiratory protectors as the Thai AQI (Air Quality Index) is a farce and published only to daze and confuse the unsuspecting into believeing the air is fit to breathe or partake in outdoor activities.

Chiang Rai is still a part of Thailand and TIT.

We have a resident "greeter and meeter" who offers to "Rendezvous" with people from the internet for "coffee and activity suggestions".

But the greeter admits to not getting out too much. Hmmmmmmm. Indoor Sports and Activities ?

The greeter is also our resident funny person who can take a topic to where it shouldn't go and is full of knowledge on everything. Just review the posts and judge for yourself.

Then we have those that don't want you to come to their little corner of the world. They hate Bangkok, Pattaya, Phuket, Chiang Mai and say Chiang Rai is different than Thailand. The only thing different in Chiang Rai is the availability quotiant. The buy me drink game is down to a science in Chaing Rai.

The companion whom you have bought drinks for all day or nite has the same old excuses or somehow dissapears only to return to the game the next night.

Most of these "haters" don't admit to going out to the local pubs, but are regularly seen tossing a few back, gossiping with the boyz, and playing with the girls at some of the finest establishments in Chiang Rai.

There is deffintion of this type of behavior in the encyclopedia.

But then, I don't know anything and don't have anything constructive to post unlike many of our happy posters from the Rai, so I might as well end with this one.

    Adios

  5. It is ok to be funny sometimes , but not go overboard. That has hapened a lot recently on this and other topics.

Lets not drag a topic in an off-topic direction full of diatribe, personal attacks, and sillyness.

I was not trying to be a know it all. If that is how it was perceived I appologize, it was not intended in that manner. I was making an honest attempt to answer questions without going off topic or being silly. My reply did not call for the improper personal attacks that followed. It is not within Forum Rules and Guidelines to outright attack another.

In Thailand, there are laws and rules regulating "Slander".

How does your reply pertain properly to this person's or subsequent following questions about Le Meridian, Hotels, the Area, and driving and parking in Chiang Rai ?

Here is the original Forum Topic Question:

    theoldgit user_popup.png Posted 2011-02-07 15:51:06

My other half won a nights stay in Le Meridian from the Bangkok Post, she not sure whether to take advantage of it or not, they say the voucher is worth 10,000 THB but I assume that's the the rack rate.

Do you local members think it's worth a visit and if so is it worth extending our stay, what's to see in the vicinity?

    Thanks in advance.

  6. Going North on the West side of the Super Highway between the soi (traffic light) going to the old bus station and the next traffic light for downtown central Chiang Rai (traffic light) is a Big Shop with just about everything low voltage electical and TV stereo and remote stuff.

Very full of just about everything and staff very helpful.

I got my recent Link UBC remote from them and was very inexpensive and they came out to install, service and show how the remote worked on a second UBC True TV. (have to watch same programming on the two TV's but well worth the couple hundred baht investment for convenience sake.

They have just about everything there. Good luck

  7. Daveha and Old Gitt,

Please ignore the ignorant posts of a few.

Le Meriedian is excellant and can extend there or to a less expensive place depening on your lifestyle and budget..

Chiang Rai is one of the number one tourist destinations of Thai's during the winter months.

The north and much of Thailand do have problems with smoke and air quality from about mid feb to the begining of April, but so far knock on wood, the skies have been prettty clear according to my view and the air quality charts.

A car is the best sort of transportaion in Chaing Rai and is suggested for sight seeing etc.

Either rent a car or hire a driver but you be in charge not the driver.

    Parking is generally very easy.

Here is the air quality chart according to the Thai authorites as of 9am Friday for Chiang Rai and all of Thailand.

Don't listen to ameteurs who try to stir the pot and create conflict and are ignorant.

    Thai AQMD Chart

  8. Le Meridian is a true international 5 star resort. Even here in Chiang Rai.

There are less people staying there because it is a luxury and high priced resort.

The did have a fantastic Friday nite Seafood Buffet. About 1,000 baht per person. But pure quality at a less expensive price than you would pay at other fine resorts around the world. I hear the other buffets they have are also quite good quality.

Le Meridian is about the best and newest followed by the Legend, then Dusit, Rimkok, and others.

Legend also has a nice buffet on select nites or occasions.

  9. I have not tried Don's Chili Con Carne. They were out of it every time I ordered it.

But agree that a restaurant should serve it and other dishes non-spicy and let the customer add Hotness as they like with salsa's, thaibasco type condements, and peppers and onions.

As for Don's location and atmosphere, it is rustic but nice and quiet set in a natural type setting.

It can be considered a bit far out of the way for those on motorbikes or without a car or other transportation.

Not a bad ride on a motorbike because the traffic is rural. Can be a long way if it is raining :annoyed:

I developed my connesewership for Tacos and Burritos from my time waiting to see the Donkey Shows in Tijuana and other Boarder Towns.

The Street Roach Coaches are the best before and after the Show B)

  10. Their Mexican food seems to be more Tex-Mex style than the Baja Style a lot of people are used to.

At Don's, the Refried Beans are the darker, thicker style, and the Mexican Rice is a little bit stronger flavour.

The filling meat for the tacos and burritos is also fine (even if it is horse meat. like that served on a street roach coach in Mexicali)

Guacamole (when/if available at Don's) is fine. Chips are generic as he buys them in bulk bags. but they are good as long as not out dated.

Enchilada's are lacking cheese and a decent sauce. Don does not seem to have a good salsa, but a selection of Tabasco style bottled sauces.

But all in all the Mexican food is good, just a differnet style.

Kae's Mexican Food in the Night Bizzare is more the Baja Style.

I personally don't care for her chicken and beef meat fillings. (I prefer the horse and goose meat) :)

The Enchilada's are great and very cheesy with a nice sauce.

The refried beens are the lighter grey/brown style and the wifey likes them and the mexican rice better (so do I) :D

Salsa, chips and Guacamole are great at Kae's. But her Guacamole is seasonal availability.

I also like the Taco Salad served in a big flour tortilla bowl. I prefer the corn tortilla, but a nice difference.

Kae uses more cheese on her dishes than Don's and is also a little more expensive. But not a long drive from central Chiang Rai.

The menu at Kae's now that she is in the Night Bizzare is limited from her old menu's. No Fajita's. Only Mexican food now.

Kae seems to have limited evening opening times from about 6:30 to 8:30 or 9 pm.

Don's I found to be inconsistant the last couple years for being open or closed. And food prep time is very very slow. But I try to enjoy the scenery and a few Leo's whilst anticipating a decent mexican meal. (as long as the mossies arn't biting)

I have not tried Don's other western items.

Seems easy for many to criticise the attempts of some to bring western food here to Chiang Rai.

Remember all the quality ingrediants are not always available, and to each his own on taste.

I for one am happy that they try. If I don't like it, Kay Sara Sara and I cook western food (the things I know how to make) at home.

  11. My wife's cousin who spends 8-9 months in Sweden as the lead chef in a major restaurant, wants us to go half in a new restaurant in Phayao serving western, European, and Thai food with him cooking and running it. He has been in the food business for about 25 years and sounds like a great idea but I have no clue about a business I know nothing about and hesitant to do it.

    Ginooo,

    Phayao........ Out of the question.

Your best if you want to do this to be in a bigger city.

The location must be a Prime location and easily accessable or forget it.

Chiang Rai can and is fastly becomming a market for upscale and falong products, services, and foods.

A new Central Plaza Mall will open about April this year in Chiang Rai with a Robinson's department store, upscale shopping, Cinema, McDonalds, Sizzler, Fuji and other restaurants (per the list of vendors seen on various webs discussing this)

Remember that Thai's will have to be the main staple of a business. Even for western and european foods.

Never forget that the place has to be special and have a certain theme or atmosphere.

Thai's only go out to go to special places and sometimes the price is not the question if the place has great food and atmosphere.

Swinsons and Pizza Company are full of Thai's here in Chiang Rai all the time.

It can be done. But it has to be done correctly. No results are quaranteed either successful or failure. Business is always a gamble.

  12. Now that looks like a copy of a Lafuma recliner.

I have a couple in the UK. Just about the most comfy chair ever.

I contacted a lafuma dealer here a couple of years ago, but they didn't have the Chairs.

    don't hesitate next time :(

Pity we've already had a youtube of the Shackletons original HighSeat Chair B)

I was stubborn and did not want to pay 500 baht more than they quoted my wifes sister the night before. Looks like a marketing idea for someone as I know these were made in China. I would have happily paid what they sell for at Walmart in the US.

Next time, send your wife or a Thai to do the deal.

With you there, the price will always go up ;)

  13. Unfortunately there is only one dependabel way to get TV in Thailand. There are many alternative ways, but not as dependable for consistant or long term use.

True UBC is the best option if you want dependable and consistant tv and service in most of Thailand.

Chiang Rai Cable TV is ok and pretty consistant within only certain areas of Chiang Rai City. It is about 350 per month, but very limited on Sports and any regular western type TV. They play some foreign movies and have about 1 or 2 news channels in English.

The True UBC main office in chiang Rai is on the Super Highway just north of Big C

True UBC Gold Package approximately 1,668 Baht per month
