  1. California is moving closer to determining what eligible Black residents are owed for generations of discriminatory practices, a key step toward potentially becoming the largest US jurisdiction to pay out billions of dollars in reparations. The California Reparations Task Force will meet over the next two days in Sacramento to assess how reparations should be distributed, which could include direct payments and investments in education, health care and homeownership for Black communities. The group is set to deliver its final recommendations to the state legislature by July 1 and it will be up to lawmakers to decide whether to adopt them. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2023-03-03/california-weighs-360-000-in-reparations-to-each-black-resident?leadSource=uverify wall
  2. Two of the four Americans kidnapped in Mexico have been found dead, while the other two have been found alive, according to Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. The Mexican president said one of those found alive was injured. The American citizens crossed into Matamoros, in the northeastern state of Tamaulipas just south of Brownsville, Texas, in a white minivan with North Carolina plates on Friday, according to the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City. https://abcnews.go.com/International/2-americans-kidnapped-mexico-found-dead-2-found/story?id=97681554
  3. Doctors do a residency and don't see patients without a fully certified and practicing doctor at their side. They don't diagnose or treat without the consent of the doctor. Teachers, who graduate in education, have at least a semester of practice teaching, again with an experienced teacher. I have worked with teachers who varied from having no degree higher than a GED to teachers who had a Ph.D. Most did not have a degree in education. In hiring, here's how I saw the performance level based on educational qualification: A degree in education -1st No degree but an in-person TEFL or similar - 2nd All other degrees - 3rd No degree - 4th Experience can trump almost everything, but you have to remember it was gained at a big expense for students.
  4. I found them to be OK, but I am not a connoisseur of chocolate. I would often bring them back for those small gifts that are sort of customary for close colleagues at work. They seemed to enjoy them.
  5. I had a fair amount of trouble with students cheating, so I told them I didn't want them cheating and that if they failed, there would be options to get extra credit. I also told them that it was important that they do the best they can in an honest manner because the test wasn't only for them, it was also for me. If a lot of them did poorly that meant I hadn't done a good job teaching them.

  12. As president, Donald Trump made some of his most thoroughly dishonest speeches at the annual Conservative Political Action Conference. As he embarks on another campaign for the presidency, Trump delivered another CPAC doozy Saturday night. Trump’s lengthy address to the right-wing gathering in Maryland was filled with wildly inaccurate claims about his own presidency, Joe Biden’s presidency, foreign affairs, crime, elections and other subjects. https://www.cnn.com/2023/03/05/politics/fact-check-trump-cpac/index.html
  13. The FBI is searching for a Florida woman who did not show up to court in Washington, DC, on Monday, when she was set to go to trial on federal charges related to the January 6, 2021, US Capitol riot. According to a warrant issued for her arrest, court officials have not been able to locate defendant Olivia Pollock since late February. The government’s search for Pollock was largely kept under wraps until she did not show up for her trial. https://www.cnn.com/2023/03/06/politics/olivia-pollock-january-6-missing/index.html

Francisco Severo Torres, 33, faces one charge of interference and attempted interference with flight crew members and attendants using a dangerous weapon. Torres was arrested at Boston Logan International Airport Monday and will remain detained pending a hearing set for Thursday. https://www.cnn.com/2023/03/06/us/boston-flight-exit-door-arrest
  16. Toblerone, the triangular-shaped chocolate with Switzerland's famed Matterhorn mountain immortalized on its packaging, will soon be changing its look to adhere to Swiss legislation. The candy bar, which is molded to mimic a mountain peak, can no longer be dubbed "Swiss chocolate" after Mondelez, the parent company of Toblerone, moved a portion of its production to a new plant in Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia. A spokesperson for the Mondelez International, the U.S.-based parent company of Toblerone, which was founded in Switzerland in 1908, confirmed the news to "Good Morning America." https://abcnews.go.com/GMA/Food/toblerone-change-matterhorn-packaging-swissness-rule-after-manufacturing/story?id=97652991
  17. Felony state domestic terrorism charges have been filed against 23 protesters arrested in Atlanta on Sunday after allegedly hurling bricks, rocks, fireworks and Molotov cocktails at police officers near the site of a planned public safety training facility, police said. After attending a music festival near the site of the soon-to-be Atlanta Public Safety Training Center, a group of people changed into black clothing and entered the construction area at around 5:30 p.m. ET. The "agitators" approached officers there and launched a "coordinated attack," according to the Atlanta Police Department. https://abcnews.go.com/US/dozens-arrested-fiery-clashes-atlantas-cop-city-training/story?id=97649479
  18. Charles Bronson, one of the UK's longest-serving prisoners, would not cope with being released, a Parole Board panel has heard. The 70-year-old, one of the UK's most violent offenders, has been in prison for much of the last 50 years. He told the panel he had had "more porridge than Goldilocks and the Three Bears, and I'm sick of it". https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-beds-bucks-herts-64861518
  19. Four US citizens were assaulted and kidnapped by gunmen in northeastern Mexico on Friday in a case of mistaken identity, a US official with knowledge of the investigation told CNN. The Americans are believed to have been targeted by mistake and were not the intended victims, the official said. They had traveled to the border city of Matamoros for medical procedures, the official said, citing receipts found in the vehicle. Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador offered a similar explanation. https://www.cnn.com/2023/03/06/americas/fbi-mexico-kidnapping-us-citizens/index.html

  21. Weeks after Gov. Ron DeSantis said he wants to make it easier to sue media outlets, proposed legislation that would do that and more has emerged in the Republican-led Florida Legislature. Sponsored by Rep. Alex Andrade, R-Pensacola, that proposal, House Bill 991, would lower the bar on who’s considered a public figure under defamation law – and lower the bar on what’s considered defamation. Andrade touts the legislation as a way for people to get justice for harms – not just from journalists but anyone making defamatory statements, like over social media. https://www.tallahassee.com/story/news/politics/2023/02/28/florida-defamation-libel-bill-a-free-speech-disaster-advocates-say/69942631007/
  22. It’s been right there on the label for more than 30 years. Healthy Choice frozen meals and entrees have been a go-to for people in a rush who want to eat something convenient but seemingly good for them. Chicken parm, sweet and sour chicken - microwaves around the country are humming with them right now. The brand represents 60 percent of sales of all products labeled as “healthy” in the market today, with more than 200 million meals sold last year. But the Food and Drug Administration’s efforts to update the current definition of “healthy” may drive parent company Conagra Brands in another direction entirely. https://www.adn.com/nation-world/2023/03/05/food-fight-fda-is-redefining-healthy-and-food-industry-is-pushing-back/

  24. A massive fire has ripped through a Rohingya refugee camp in Bangladesh’s southern district of Cox’s Bazar on Sunday, leaving around 12,000 people homeless, local Superintendent of Police Mohammad Mahfuzul Islam told CNN. Sweeping through the Kutupalong refugee camp in the afternoon, the blaze gutted around 2,000 huts before it was brought under control, Islam said. No casualties have been reported so far, he said, adding that the cause of the fire is not yet determined but an investigation is under way. https://www.cnn.com/2023/03/05/asia/fire-rohingya-refugee-camp-bangladesh-intl/index.html
