  1. The feat was first documented by others in a human in 2006 in the pre-YouTube era and with technology that is far more cumbersome, mooring patients to a computer with a cord. Mr. Musk’s presentation on Wednesday night offered little that was significantly new from previous demonstrations of the device. He continued to claim that the implant could make computer control possible for people with paralysis outside of a lab setting. https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/technology/elon-musk-hopes-to-test-a-brain-implant-in-humans-next-year/ar-AA14Ly9S?ocid=mailsignout&pc=U591&cvid=2518495c6ec24defb0e071a9a79a432c&fbclid=IwAR0RKWBv8DTHS4IE2ncDdViGMB9gDfFGxNvr2rMlm9pI7lPyIbbvUy2ANyE

  3. Russia is now using nuclear-capable missiles with non-explosive warheads to exhaust Ukraine's air defences, the Ukrainian military has said. It displayed what it said were fragments of Soviet-made X-55 cruise missiles - designed for nuclear use - found in Ukraine's two western regions. The rockets are being launched to "exhaust the air-defence system of our country," a Ukrainian official said. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-63826082
  4. An appeals court on Thursday ruled to scrap the appointment of a special master to review documents seized from former President Trump's Mar-a-Lago residence. Why it matters: It's a major defeat for Trump and a victory for the Department of Justice, which has pushed to end the third-party review. The decision allows the DOJ to continue its probe into the former president's handling of classified documents. What they’re saying: "The law is clear," the appeals court wrote. https://www.axios.com/2022/12/01/trump-mar-a-lago-special-master

  6. Now, 67 years after her arrest, members of the Congressional Black Caucus are paying tribute to the woman who helped spark the Civil Rights Movement. “Today, we honor the legendary trailblazer, #RosaParks for her bravery to spark a movement that changed America for the better,” tweeted CBC Chairwoman Joyce Beatty (D-Ohio). “Her leadership has inspired me and so many Americans – and countless others around the world – all these years later.” Rep. Troy Carter (D-La.) said Parks’ actions were a stance against white supremacy. https://thehill.com/homenews/house/3758538-congressional-black-caucus-members-honor-rosa-parks-on-anniversary-of-arrest/
  7. Ye’s appearance on far-right conspiracy-theory outlet InfoWars quickly turned into a chance to preach antisemitic hatred on Thursday, as the star formerly known as Kanye West praised Adolf Hitler within the first thirty minutes of the broadcast. Ye, whose face was entirely hidden behind a black mask, began praising the genocidal German dictator soon after the broadcast began. Ye began to commend Hitler after InfoWars host Alex Jones tried to defend the rapper’s recent streak of antisemitic statements. https://www.thedailybeast.com/kanye-west-tells-alex-jones-that-i-like-hitler
  8. I have had jobs, including interviewing refugees for asylum and other jobs that included hiring people who were going to be going through a security check. That requires some rather extensive and, at times intrusive, questions. That has carried over in my personal life and in rather casual conversations, I occasionally start sensing I've stayed across the line of making conversation into intrusiveness. I will back off quickly. The big difference is that in my official capacities I had a level of power over the people and some authority. In a social context, not so much. Lady Susan-Hussey had a level of power and influence. The person being question has every right to be intimidated. The best way out is to find some distraction. I'd have been inclined to ask her, "and what does a lady-in-waiting do besides ask intrusive questions?" Or "I assume your interest is due to your MI5 background?"
  9. Detectives do not know whether the four University of Idaho students killed in their off-campus home last month were specifically targeted, police said Wednesday – in what may be their strongest departure yet from their earlier statements. Police say they’re reacting specifically to information they say a prosecutor’s office released this week about the killings in the college town of Moscow: “That one or more of the occupants were undoubtedly targeted.” That information released by the prosecutor’s office “was a miscommunication,” police said Wednesday. https://www.cnn.com/2022/12/01/us/university-of-idaho-students-killed-thursday/index.html
  10. — Iran’s World Cup defeat to the United States was met by cheers and celebrations in Tehran and other Iranian cities on Tuesday evening, as protesters hailed the country’s exit from the tournament as a blow to the ruling regime. The nation was eliminated from the tournament in Qatar after its 1-0 loss on Tuesday, ending a campaign that has been overshadowed by anti-government protests that have raged for months at home. But there are concerns about the safety of the Iranian players returning home across the Persian Gulf, after the team initially refused to sing Iran’s national anthem before their first game in an apparent show of solidarity with demonstrators. https://edition.cnn.com/2022/11/30/middleeast/iran-protests-world-cup-defeat-celebrations-intl/index.html
  11. RIP. One of the few groups that truly touched me. The end of an era.
  12. Democratic governors in North Carolina and Kansas are set to take another run at expanding Medicaid next year — believing that arguments in favor of the Obama-era health insurance program are wearing down once-steadfast Republican opposition. Neither governor will have an easy time: North Carolina lawmakers have come around to Medicaid expansion but can’t agree on a deal to enact it, while the GOP-led Kansas legislature remains skeptical. Proponents, however, believe a growing body of data on the program’s success in other red states has persuaded an increasing number of holdouts — and that the additional federal money that comes with expansion could tip the scales with lawmakers staring down a possible recession. https://www.politico.com/news/2022/11/30/obamacare-medicaid-expansion-kansas-north-carolina-00071253
  13. The late Queen's lady-in-waiting Lady Susan Hussey has apologised and resigned after she repeatedly asked a black British charity boss where she was really from. Ngozi Fulani, a charity founder, was questioned about her background at the charity event at the palace on Tuesday. Ms Fulani, said she was "totally stunned" by Prince William's godmother's comments. https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-63810468
  14. A famous Australian crocodile wrangler has been charged over a helicopter crash that killed his friend and reality television co-star. Known as the Outback Wrangler, Matt Wright is accused of perverting the course of justice, destroying and fabricating evidence, interfering with witnesses and unlawful entry. He is the third person charged over the crash which killed Chris "Willow" Wilson in February. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-australia-63802827
  15. The United States have beaten Iran 1-0 to qualify for the 2022 World Cup round of 16, where they will play the Netherlands. Christian Pulisic scored the only goal of the game as the USMNT preserved their undefeated record against Iran. The Chelsea forward suffered an abdominal injury while scoring the goal, however, and was later taken to hospital. In the other Group B match on Tuesday England beat Wales 3-0. They will play Group A runners-up Senegal for a place in the quarter-finals. https://theathletic.com/live-blogs/usmnt-vs-iran-world-cup-2022-live-score-updates-result/svs71ZXB8RSo/
  16. Washington CNN — The Senate on Tuesday passed legislation to protect same-sex and interracial marriage, called the Respect for Marriage Act, in a landmark bipartisan vote. The final vote was 61-36. The bill was supported by all members of the Democratic caucus and 12 Republicans, the same dozen GOP members who backed the bill for a procedural vote earlier this month. The House will now need to approve the legislation before sending it to President Joe Biden’s desk to be signed into law. https://www.cnn.com/2022/11/29/politics/same-sex-marriage-vote-senate/index.html

  19. Just five days ago Elon Musk promised, “More and more over time, as we hew closer to the truth, Twitter will earn the trust of the people.” Then, the new owner of Twitter fired off a series of questionable posts overnight that drew rebuke from the Anti-Defamation League, CNN and many of the platform’s users. Beginning about 2 a.m., the world’s wealthiest man tweeted a report attributing to CNN the idea that “Elon Musk could threaten free speech on Twitter by literally allowing people to speak freely.” https://deadline.com/2022/11/elon-musks-twitter-pepe-the-frog-tweet-adl-cnn-1235182744/
  20. A drug "super cartel" that controlled about a third of Europe's cocaine supply has been dismantled, police have announced. Dubbed Operation Desert Light, 49 people were arrested across six European countries, the EU's police agency, Europol, said. They included a British national, who is suspected of heading the operation. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-63781424
  21. Chinese police beat a BBC journalist in Shanghai and briefly arrested him while he was covering anti-government lockdown protests gripping the nation. Ed Lawrence was detained at the main protest in the city on Sunday, and held for several hours before being freed. "It is very worrying that one of our journalists was attacked in this way whilst carrying out his duties," the BBC said.
