  1. Mr. Hippo,

Your weakness seems to be punctuation. There are numerous inconsistencies- you sometimes use apostrophes where quotation marks would normally be required; furthermore, you avoid the recommended use of commas after introductory clauses and before conjunctions. Your language is perfectly clear and I do understand what you are saying... but there's always an even stricter sensibility than the one with which you are comfortable. That's why I usually find myself on the more permissive end of these kinds of debates about public language.

Personally, I agree with you about "phonespeak" and don't even use it when composing phone messages, but I am not irritated enough over the issue to complain about it. Lead by example, and all that.

Which misguided soul recommends the use of commas before conjunctions? Bacon, and eggs? Which school did he/she go to?

  2. Soldering is the spelling. How do you Brits pronounce it?

Brits, Aussies, and perhaps others say "sold" as in "old"; not as in "odd", oddly :o .

Brits say this where? Never heard in 50+ years.

    "sol" as in "solid" sol(id)ering.

Use to do it all the time repairing radios (these are the same as wirelesses)

  3. I still cannot download FTP. Then again Ipstar has been pathetically slow for a week or so. I mean even worse than normal. It truly STINKS. Unfortunately I'm stuck with it except for GPRS which is very slow too.
    Gary,

Ditch TOT Ipstar like I did and get CSloxinfo Ipstar. Faster and cheaper.

  4. Well, I'm back after a six week break.

I got rid of TOT Ipstar with dial-up speeds and now have CS Loxinfo internet. It's faster and cheaper.

So much for the Terrible Organisation of Thailand that only enabled my phone 10 days last month and so far only 2 days this month.

I wish TOT had some competition in the countryside.

  5. For what it is worth I have a letter from HM Revenue & Customs dated 12 June 2007. In it are the following quotes:

''You can claim a dependant wife increase when you reach age 65 regardless of your wife's age and residence status. You will need to send the pensions office a copy of your marriage certificate at the time you make your claim".

I rang the contact number on this letter tonight only to be re-directed to the DWP website under pension reforms. The staff member was not particularly helpful stating only that these reforms would have an effect on dependant wives. Despite his assurance I have found the DWP website impossible to find the relevant information.

I then rang a contact number for DWP and the lady stated more or less what was contained in the letter of 12 June. She further added that they would need a notarized copy and translation of the marriage certificate plus my wife's birth certificate in order to obtain a National Insurance number and consequently receive the additional pension allowance. (My wife doesn't have a birth certificate. Anyone know the system in this country for obtaining one?).

All in all I am quite confused with the various comments coming from British Civil Servants.

My wife doesn't have a birth certificate either - it's a fairly modern idea.

I sent an original marriage certificate (we have 2) in Thai for them to translate and a certified copy of the her ID card. DWP accepted this. Copy of House Reg. might also help.

Still in the middle of a long battle because they didn't send me a pension assessment just started sending me a single pension. Took 8 years to find that out!

  6. Having passed through school in the good old days of miles, furlongs, yards, feet and inches plus the oddities like rods, poles and perches we knew the system as "Imperial" although in the states they are known as "customary" units.

Lovely old units they were and we used to get arithmetic questions like:-

"Farmer Brown grows potatoes and his crop this year is 19 tons 3 quarters 5 stone and 11 pounds. He divided the crop equally between his three sons who took their shares to different markets. First son sold his share for one shilling and seven pence a pound, the second sold his for 5% less and the third for 15% more.

To the nearest pound what weight of potatoes did each son get and how much did they each bring home?"

On top of that calculators hadn't been invented and we didn't have slide rules, all we had was a pencil and paper.

And the answers are. . .?

  7. Well my 2 week vacation is up but this was a productive one. My Thai gf and I found a great condo in central BKK for 8 mil and we will transfer on it in a few months. I'm a working stiff in the UK so I won't be able to be here to do it so I need to wire this cash to her to get this transfer done. We are also building a beautiful house in Udon (her parents gifted us the land!) for 4 mil and I will need to take care of this in coming months. I have read a lot of things on the forum about a 20K USD transfer limit and this has me concerned as obviously I wish to transfer much more than that. I have a Bangkok Bank savings account that I just opened but will she be able to access that for these purchases? Or do I have to make the transfer(s) to her account? Any advice on how to get this done for smooth transactions would be helpful. I'm leaving BKK tomorrow (arrgh!). I will feel so much better when all this gets done so I can relax knowing we have our homes all set up for when I make the big move late next year when I retire and get married. Thanks everyone in advance.

Start by phoning the Bangkok Bank in London 207-929-4422 and talk to Customer Service.

  8. Seems I found it.

on 192.168.1.1 it shows as 1024/512

Do I just have to wait ?

I'm on the same ISP with 256/128 nominal speed. Bad for 3 months now, more like 35/50 from the US. Used to be fine.

  9. For the last three or four days I've been getting a message from RUNDLL it says

    Error loading WINEVL32.DLL

Can't find it on my computer or download it either.

Seems to work OK without it. Any ideas, please?

  10. I've had TOT Ipstar 256/128 for about 10 months now. Until some 3 months ago everything was fine but now I get a slow dial-in speed during the morning.

Frequent calls to 1100 get an intelligent person but no action. A equipment fault gets same day action from the local guy.

Only paid 800 baht last month. Suggest everyone only pays 50% and we'll see if this has any effect.

  11. What's the problem?

If the music on the radio is in copyright and you make a recording this is an infringement of the copyright. i.e. you have copied it.

Of course, it cannot be enforced if you only play it to yourself (who else knows?).

Play it to a friend and you have problems: copyright and performing right.

  12. This might work and it may not. I am always being asked you know anyone who does plumbing electric ,building etc:

So lets see if we can put a directory together. You will need to supply your locality description of persons trade not necessarily need to be documented:

I am talking about the local Thai craftsman you may have used guys or lasses and were pleased with there work in whatever skills they have. Farangs are moving into our areas all the time and are looking for good craftsmen.

If the response is good I will ask the mods to pin the Topic

I have nobody that I want to recomend, but if anyone out there need some piping design, plumming, pool, drainage, what-ever involves pipes, then I would like to help, also excisting pipe-work there dosent work, can be fixed.

    Regards.

So we have a starter, but what's your locality: where you are NOT your local!
