It's definitely NOT ok for a child to walk a long way home alone. They also say it's ok because it's not their child.
It may not be ok ( in your opinion ) but it's reality, it's done all over the world buddy....

Can I get a company like EMS to actually PICK UP the parcels from me ( at my home address) without me having to go to any post office
Wifey uses the local motorcycle taxi guys to run errands like this, give him the parcel and money, make sure he gets the receipt from the post office. Nominal fee charged.
Obviously there is a degree of trust involved but it works well where we are, her favourite chap even gets beer in when I can't be arsed to go and get it myself
They have their uses......beer run is one.
I've never had any problems with using EMS in Thailand.

Kids need cell phones for this reason.
Absolutely, all children should be equipped with them and taught how to use them. Speed dial is so easy to set up for a 6-7 year old. and .... cells are so cheap for a base model no reason for a kid not to have one.
They should be down the mines by 6 or 7.......

It looks like some wives need love, some need a set salary for being with their foreign husbands.
Isnt that true of women in every country?
Not in my experience or opinion, no.
From what I've seen in 6 years here about 50% of Western male/Thai female relationships, the farang has to give his 'wife' or 'girlfriend' a set monthly salary or she will leave him.
I've never come across this in any other country. It's odd that none of my married friends, or anyone I know at home or anywhere in the West have to give a salary to their wife in order for her to stay with him.
Maybe you could call it an allowance. None of your married friends give their wives any financial support?? If the wife is bringing up a young family it's most likely she is not working therefore if the husband does not give her an allowance how does she survive?

I didnt text the whole internet; I just looked it up on wikipedia.
Just out of curiosity, on my way back from supper earlier, I called into two other similar internet shops and asked whether they did printing without a surcharge over and above the print cost. They both said that they did. So at least I now have a choice for next time.
Sounds like someone has learned a valuable lesson, perhaps had you asked the same question you would have been spared all this angst and the loss of your 5B.
LOL - money better spent elsewhere...

As you've finally bit after your previous sarcastic responses may we ask where you rent for 75k a month ??
The thread was started by someone with obvious knowledge requests but you giving it the big "I am" has trashed it.
Back to Bournemouth sunshine..
Really, I thought it was you taking offense with how strangers spend their money that really trashed it. Perhaps people should put disclaimers in their posts like Please tell me how much you spend per month, but if you spend over 50k a month on housing please don't tell us because Chivas will take offense and start an argument with you.
You've obviously got an agressive/jealous streak so giving you any information about where I live is probably not a good idea.
Get on buddy keep it up-most amusing.
To the other poster the cost of my housing is zero. But am obviously jealous of some fruit chucking out 75k a month...
As already mentioned it's all relative, if you're making 1M a month, 75K a month is no big deal..... A decent 2 or 3 bedroom condo in certain areas of BKK you will pay double or more than that.
I spend on average 150 - 200K a month, all inc.

Oh dear, oh dear,
Why would anyone waste time for bitching about a 5 Baht major scam.
Beats me, but anyway hilarious topic
Yermanee :jap:
All of Darrels posts are about saving 1 or 2 baht here or there, it appears he spends all his time searching for these tiny savings - pathetic!

In the end I had a good look around Central Festival, where I found a branch of Bata (as mentioned: thanks). Inside the main department store I also found an area selling Timberland, HiTek (sp?) and Clarkes (sp?) footwear of various types.
The Bata shop seemed to have quite a few decent trainers for around 800B and up, including what looks as though it might be an own-brand at around 1200B. K-Power I think it was. One can hope that as a fairly reputable name, Bata wont be selling trainers that disintegrate in under 2 months.
Hard to tell the exact prices in Central itself as they are subject to so many discounts. The Timberland "shoes" I saw (I suppose you could call them light walking boots) seemed to be quite well made and had a sticker saying 4000B on them. But there is a 15% off promo this month, another 10% off for having a 1-Card and some sort of extra discount that wasn't at all clear.
Either way, both those places compare very well with the "sports" shops selling Nike and Adidas for anything up to 9999 Baht. (That's GBP200+ for a pair of trainers, which seems positively delirious).
I shall have to go back with my spare insoles so that I can check which of the above shoes will take them.
Thanks for the helpful comments.
Push the boat out and go for the 800baht pair.......

If you want to try a really good quality brand of sneakers/ trainers/ athletic shoes... try New Balance. These 452's are available right now on Ebay for less than 2,000 baht, including shipping to Thailand. This is absolutely a case of, "You get what you pay for," and these are extremely well-made, comfortable & durable sneakers. I've owed about 6 pairs of New Balance in the last 15 years- 3 for tennis, and 3 all-purpose (cross-trainers). Great footwear... really. And, they make different widths, so you can optimize the fit.
Interesting suggestion, thanks, but I'm not sure I could order shoes online. I dont know what their sizes are like (different brands seem to have different interpretations of size).
A bit like buying spectacles online.
I will certainly note the name and have a look at that brand when I'm in the UK, where I suspect they are cheaper than here.
Chances are they'll be out of your 15 Euro price range tho, bummer.....

My God.
Your wife sounds like a nightmare.
I feel sorry for you.
Or you may say living in the West to a Thai is a Nighmare
No matter how hard you work and try to be a better person you will always be seen as
JUST A THAI
Do not feel sorry for me, I have a good wife who is trying to make a go in a world that looks down on all that do not match their requirements
You could add any number of nationalities here, Mexican / Indian / Bangladeshi / Philipino etc etc, it's not unique to Thai's, you and your wife need to get over it

Just show her craiglist posts from thais in the personal or meet me sections in america.
Ask her what her governement would do if americans were to come over thailand and do the same thing?
She'll get it.
You miss the point
She does not live in Thailand
But is a long time Australian resident
But she has a Thai passport and obviously still has the Thai attitude and mentality by the sounds of it....

Unlike you I LOVE THAILAND AND ITS WAYs
But you live in Australia in your million dollar home, can't love it that much???

WOW, still incredible, maybe we could have a whip round on TV and get you a pair of 16 Euro trainers, would you like that?
You dont seem to understand. I can buy my own trainers.
I just want to know where to find some decent ones, without having to fly to Europe to do so. No big deal, surely?
You have said in previous posts that you never go more than 10 minutes from where you stay, do you go round in circles?
You also dont seem to understand the difference between walking somewhere in order to get there, or walking for the pleasure of walking.
I am a couple of minutes walk from the beach, so I dont need any transport to get there. Once there, I walk for about an hour every day. That's 30 minutes in one direction, then 30 minutes back again. This is known as exercise.
I suspect that you may be being deliberately obtuse.
So you're telling fibs then, you said you never go anywhere more than 10 minutes away from where you stay. If you walk a couple minutes to the beach and then walk for 30 minutes surely that takes you more than 10 minutes outside your little world - naughty boy, tut tut.....

First statement in bold - you've really never spent more than 15 Euro's on trainers in your entire life?? that's incredible!
I think the meaning was pretty obvious: in my entire life I have never spent more than 15 Euros per pair.
Second statement in bold - you will notice the difference in high end trainers against cheap crap if you're into sport, running or walking for long distances regularly etc. I believe you never go more than 10 minutes from where you live which would explain why your cheap trainers are lasting so long!
I generally walk a minimum of 1 hour per day, every day, except if it rains all day. I have done this for the last 30+ years.

Has that girl in the bottom picture got a tache?
FYI you could take dog turd down walking st and it would look better than most the girls there so i would not flatter yourself too much.

Are you including the ladies who work in the bars or just the ones who sleep in the street?
The ones in the bars too, of course there are a few diamonds in the rough but not many!
It's all relative tho, if you're an old man of course they will look pretty but majority of them are damaged goods.....

Very very unlikely a bank in thailand will lend you 15M baht. You might have more of a chance if you can put up 50% of your own money.

I still can't believe your statement in first post about finding 600THB expensive!!
600B for 2 months' use, compared to 500B for 18 months' use? I consider the former to be very expensive. If they lasted a year or so like the others then that would have been OK.
In my entire life I have never paid more than about 15Euros for trainers, and normally they last at least a year, sometimes more.
If you buy a decent pair of trainers you'll get 3-5 years out of them but will need to spend 2000-3000 baht, your feet will be comfortable!
My brother buys expensive brand-name trainers (he also has GBP90 designer hair cuts and shops at IKEA; we have little in common ) but he rarely if ever gets more wear out of them than I get out of my cheap sub-15Euro ones. He certainly doesn't get any more comfort.
So I am not convinced that spending 2500B on brand-name trainers would in fact achieve anything at all, apart from making some shop rich at my expense.

I went to Mike's this morning. They're doing some remodelling and half the floors were closed. Couldn't find very much in the way of footwear, and most of what I did find was shoes rather than trainers.
I dont like shoes as they have no padding on the soles.
They did have quite a lot of the usual 2500+B Adidas/Nike rubbish, but I am NOT paying GBP50 for a pair of branded trainers, any more than I would pay more than 250B/GBP5 for jeans.
Couldnt find the manwin place mentioned either. Which floor are they on?
Will try and find a Bata to see if I get more luck there.
I hate shopping nearly as much as I hate sport.
I just dont understand how there can be so many shops all stocking the same overpriced rubbish that no-one ever seems to buy, yet none stocking decent quality items that people actually want.

Sorry pal,
Wish I'd seen your post earlier. This seems to be an anti Mayweather sports page. Catch it on youtube, short and sweet. As you probably know Ortiz got KTFO in the 4th round. Hope Pac is next!
Dream on, Mayweather looses his arse at the very mention on the PAC man - fact!!!

Exactly. I've no idea why Western countries are so suspicious about Thai wives.
Are you the same age? If so it makes it even more incomprehensible that they could think it was a 'scam'.
Well, my country wasn't suspicious of my wife, they just required her to apply for a visa, which she did. They then gave it to her.
There is no mention in the OP that the US government thought there was any kind of 'scam' going on.
Every country has it's own immigration laws, some allow you to just turn up and they let you in, others require visas which you need to apply for before you can travel there.
My wife also had to travel to Bangkok to submit her application, the fact that she has two children and had to get someone to take care of them whilst she did that, isn't any concern of the UK government.
If she had found these requirements too difficult, or inappropriate, she wouldn't be able to travel to the UK.
The fact is that the US requires visitors from certain countries to apply for visas before they travel there. Thailand is one of those countries and the OP's wife is a Thai passport holder.
Either the OP's wife applies for a visa or she can't travel to the US. No amount of debate will change the US immigration rules in that regard.
As already stated
The Thai Wife does not want to go to a country that treats her like a bar girl
so we off to Tahiti,
she got a visa over the internet
I am just a Farang and only wants warm dinners and a warm bed at night,
The sun in Tahiti is just as good as Hawaii
So she has voted with her feet
I read through all these comments thinking I must have missed something about your Thai wife being rejected for a U.S. tourist visa, couldn't find anything like that. It's just that you and she decided not to do like a host of other people in lots of countries do, apply for the visa. Unfortunately, post 9/11/2001, much of this is now in-person.
All up to you, there's no inference that your wife was a "bar girl," it's the same for all Thai here in Thailand, my wife, too. Happily we don't live too far out of town but it does blow a whole day. Not so with a Thai down Hat Yai way, blows 2-3 days for them. Bar girls or PHD holders, all the same.
Mac
Correct, so long as they meet the criteria set by the authorities they do not care about bar girl / nurse / actress / etc etc.....

IMO you really want someone staying in there if you're gonna be away for long periods of time.
If you're in-laws & family are Thai get one of them to move in full time and look after it, if you can trust them ( chances are there is at least one of them without a job, probably more ). They will be more than happy to watch TV, eat and sleep all day in a nice house.
