They know all this because last week  TAT got the TV fortune teller in... To tell them the numbers amd how much coin to expect.

This place is like lego land

You have the BEST explanation of all.... I remember a story about a 'Fortune Teller'(last week)... And Thais live their life by these people...... 555555..... FOLLOW YOUR DREAMS..... (Until you awaken --- quite startled/shocked.....

Do you know the definition of a 'cynic'?

It’s an 'optimist with experience ' - and readers here have a LOT of experience.

As a long time TV reader I have found an 'Abundance' of interesting info on the forum......

I/WE can make our own choices what to read and what to reply to.... I 'LOVE' ThaiVisa.com and commend them on the diversity of their coverage.... NOBODY makes me/you read something that we don't like.... BUT... It is presented to US ALL, and we can decide 'on our own'.......

DON'T try to mess TV up for just your own satisfaction... Ignore what you don't like or offer your own personal thoughts.... IT IS HERE FOR EVERYBODY..........

  3. Something not often seen in the Thai legal system... WOULD BE MUCH BETTER...

The Gov't workers actually need to take the time to evaluate EACH CASE seperately (Obviously wasn't done with this guy)....... Those Gov't workers are to lazy to work hard and eavaluate each case seperatly...... There are Probably 100 or maybe 1000 deserving people given a reduced  sentence, in contrast to a single 'BAD GUY'.... and if evaluated case by case... the good ones won't have to pay the price for the 1 in a 1000 BAD ONE....

Make IF these Gov't workers get off their A** and do their job... guys like this won't happen...

DON'T just make a new policy because of 'ONE Bad Apply'...... and hurtn the other 'not so bad apples'   THIS GUY is totally ignorant and desperate to show people that he wants to do something GOOD... But everyone knows that he is 'desperately' trying to look good to the public...

Actually in the US across all States the age of consent varies between 16-18, with some States having a 'close in age' exemption.

But there is at least in my mind, a huge difference between a 16 year old girl having consensual sex with an 18 year boyfriend, to a 16-18 year old girl having sex with older men in a Karaoke bar.

One is youthful sex, the other is exploitation

Where on the law books do you find anything about the age of the person having sex with 16 year old????????????? Whether it be an 18 year old boy or a cash customer?????.......

Thailand is a poverty stricken country.... More so in the past 5 years (as I have observed over the past 40 years) and prostitution has feed many hungry children (and moms and dads) that may have died of hunger... So actually this thread is more about a set age (per the law) and is being enforced in Thailand 'More for Money' than Moral Reasons....

NGO's from other countries, in their own 'warped' and money grabbin ways have come into poor countries and offered police money (per raid/bust) to catch sex trafficers... MANY parts of this I can condone... BUT... Don't you and I know Thai Cops????? 'They' will set up scams to catch people, even planting narcotics on innocent people.... SO... You discussing age in this thread I feel is just something for the THAI Cops to make money off of, not that those cops are morally driven to uphold any age laws....

I have known Thai Cops and even Thai attornys who have told me examples of NGOs paying cops 'Per conviction' ... I was very close to one case where the 'lady caught' could have paid the cops 200,000 baht and released.... The cops knowing that they would get a certain (lessor) amount from the NGO Organization if she didn't pay up.... She didn't have the money...

So, as normal, we all have our opinions... But in sone cases it depends on the letter of the law... as in 2 weeks from now she would have been 18 (and legal)... OR....  The NGOs are paying us 75,000 baht if we do our job.... OR... Let's just make a bust and get the NGOs money.....

Many people Donate money to NGOs as "Save The Children Foundation" (and others) (Doctors without Borders, Etc.) so the foundation can pay for their private jets for their founders and Doctors to travel in and put them up in Hiltons and Sheratons and in cases like this to reward 'Cops' for their good work.... (The THAI Cops - and others countries love their 'easy money').... I spend a lot of my time learning about this and have a few (In the know) friends who tell me how it really is.....

NOW..... I have stopped my donations to those charities and take my donations DIRECTLY TO THE NEEDY........ MOSTLY in ISSAN in Thailand.... I have several 'Charities in Thailand' and feel bad knowing there are SO MANY MORE deserving souls in Issan that I can't help (and their Gov't won't HELP).... OTHERS who could help these people are TOO INVOLVED with buying submarines (and tanks for upcoming demonstrations)

Back to the Topic....... You can believe that age matters in this case and you can believe that the cop wasn'rt really playing around with the girls 17 year old body.... BUT... WE weren't THERE... and all we have is the news..... You believe what you like and I will believe what I like.... MINE based on much moe (40 years) experience than just reading the news.....

  5. I think the taxes are added MOSTLY by men (in Gov't positions) more than the women........ as the woman in the story, and she could care less about the few baht tax because she is HiSo (Rich - working for the Gov't) and has plenty of money...

Edited to add... With this present regime... I can just see them fixing big taxes even on Pampers Diapers.... to get more money for Tanks and Submarines... I think they will be putting Tanks in operation soon, not for war, but agains't their own Thai people who are showing their thoughts with the recent Protests.... Communism has no thought other than 'themselves'....

  6. They (police) just want to sound like they are doing something.... Well I guess they are.... Talking....

Talk is Cheap but in reality when the holiday comes and they could really do some police work (they don't believe in work)..... at that time a large percent of them will be drinking also (in Uniform often) My Thai wife has 2 police brothers in Korat - Horrible drunks (on Duty)... Another large percent will 'Hide' from the hard work on that day....

EDIT to add: I don't want to lable all RTP as bad/lazy... I've seen many 'Good jobs' from the 'Criminal Police'... BUT the traffic police pretty well fit my discription....

Police should approach the 'Passengers'... DON'T RIDE WITH DRUNK DRIVERS... That would cut the numbers of deaths by a few....

Where I live we have had campaigns promoting: "FRIENDS DON'T LET FRIENDS DRIVE DRUNK"....

i LIKE TO DRINK, and I do my share..... BUT.... when I am going to be driving and I/we are out at bars, I am ok with drinking 'COKE' only so I can be their 'Dedicated Driver'

I make a strong comparison of Thai men and American Red Indians... THEY Cannot DRINK.... But they do drink.... American Indians are well known to have that 'disability' IN THEIR GENES....

Up here in rural Khampaeng that means a whole 100 baht for an 8 hour day at 5 days a week. That is enough for only one person to have one extra meal at a roadside stall per week.

I have no doubt that SME owners will be coming along soon moaning about how hard life is and perhaps threatening to lay off staff and shut down businesses.

If you have a company with only 10 workers or less it will cost you 1,000 baht per month.

How are you calculating?????  At a 100 baht per 8 hour day?????????

"Minimum wages nationwide will increase by Bt5-6, pushing the minimum wages to Bt313-336 Baht per day." (Copied from original post)..... That is USD$9 per day's pay.....

5-6 baht is 'PER DAY'........ Not per hour...... Pity the poor.... This present Junta Gov't only cares about Military and Rich Folks.... NOT THE POOR FOLKS working for this wage....

IF YOU THINK ABOUT IT.... This wage is what they pay their servants, maids and chauffers... you don't think they want to spend more of 'their' (the rich folks) hard earned money on their servants, do you.... that is why the current 'junta' PM and all other Gov't officials don't want the 'Daily Minimum Wage' to go up HIGHER....... IF it goes up then They have to pay MORE MONEY for their servants.... May Buddha Bless this present Gov't (military regime)....

Seems to have mental health issues, needs to be repatriated and cared for. Mental illness is just that, an illness and those saying he needs a kicking etc should take some time reflecting upon their attitude.

I really don't think this guy is a total Mental health 'issue'.... I think he has more of a 'drinking problem'.... 'American Indians' (and I've known a few Navajo Indians) Cannot handle Liquor at all... It is a well known fact in the US.... They go crazy after just a slight amount of Liquor (similar to a large number of 'Thai Boys').... So I think 'booze' is to blame... Not 'Mental Issues'...

In the US, we have a lot of mentally ill people with no care, and nowhere to go. The police and prisons are the first, last and only line of defense. The real shame is that this guy made it all the way to Thailand. But this is how it is. Mentally ill people have good days and bad days. Sometimes they take their meds and sometimes they don't. Sometimes they can hold down a job and sometimes they can't.

BTW, I know I am diagnosing from the outside here but its easy to do. Delusions of grandeur are typical of schizophrenia.

I am fully in agreement... WE in the USA do have a percentage of these mental cases....

But I am bewildered to think that the USA is the only country that has them.

Several posters on this thread made posts that Identify this man in the OP as a 'typical' US Citizen.... and I personally resent It.... I AM NOT LIKE HIM ---- IN ANY WAY....

I Hope this Amarican in the OP pays dearly for what he did, and if he is indeed 'mentally deficient... I hope he gets the help he needs..... PERSONALLY... I Think he is just an 'uncontrolled' Boozeaholic.... Not so different from some American  (and Australian) Hells Angels who have gave many countries a bad reputation in Thailand......

Off course it is...its that deep Feudian thing, hating your Daddy and all that. Whose your Daddy then? Plus, in a world of dogs, the little ones are always hating on the Big Dog.????????????

But hate is sad, dont you think? As a proud Yank, I dont have hate for the folks who arent. Pity sometimes, but never hate.

Hey buddy, I'm a yank myself and so proud of it..... Thanks for sticking up for us Yanks....

This whole thread contains several posts that are negative to 'Yanks' (and Americans in general) just because This lunatic in THIS post comes from America....

This post is about a 'Yank' and now some of these posters want to use him to 'label' all of us as being similar to this OP guy.... actually I take it as a negative factor in judging a value for their post..... If they boast a dislike for yanks, UP to them... -- Maybe those posters need to examine their own standing in their own country before they critisise other countries and 'yanks'....

Don't criticise the lady next door as she may be used as an example of your own mother...

As a Yank I am hoping that this 'wierdo' In Chiang Mai pays a big price for his 'bad deeds' and the bad reflection he causes for the rest of us 'Proud Americans'.....
