  1. Since there is no reply, I'll give it a shot.

Not from my own or close experiences, but more from hear-say.

If someone wants a military buy out, it seems to be normal to arrange that with the poo-yai-baan (kind of mayor in the bf's village). He's the last filter before the bf has to pull the draw. Amounts from THB 10,000 up to THB 60,000 is what I've heard. If they know that a farang is involved, the amount is certainly higher.

There are alternatives: go to university, work as social servant, becoming a monk or there may be other options.

If there are 700 guys who are eligible to join the army and they only need 150, the chance is pretty high that your bf will "drop out'. There are always volunteers, because joining the army is an honorable thing to do.

Don't be afraid of your bf loosing his job. There are plenty of jobs available.

  2. I bought a Garmin Nüvi 1490T in Holland with a fully up-to-date European map.

Acquiring a map for in Thailand wouldn't be a problem..........I thought.

There are plenty of countries from where you can either buy memory-cards or downloads online.

    Not in Thailand!!!!!!

You actually have to contact the maindealers or ESRI direct.

    Absolutely no downloads available.

Downloading or obtaining memory-card for S.E. Asian Maps V12.0 is USD 99.99 or Euro 119. (resp. THB 3,099 or THB 4,879).

Buying the same map from ESRI will cost you THB 6,200 !!!???

Answer from ESRI.........we have to pay import tax Misterrrrrrrr. Sure up my *ss.

So, I went to the nearest Garmin dealer in Pattaya.........Power Buy along Pattaya Klaang.

I asked for a map and of course.............."Mai mee Misterrrrrrrr!"

You are a Garmin dealer yes? ............. "Yes misterrrrrr! But no have maps! Go TukCom is better"

    Great.........may 'favorite' shopping mall!

Anyway, I found a nice little shop, run by a perfect English speaking couple.

I asked for a Thai map (because I don't need Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei and Singapore) and in 10 minutes the Thai map V12 was installed on my Garmin. With less features than the European map, but more than sufficient. Far better than my Nokia N86 8MP GPS.

The shop in TukCom? On the 2nd floor. After taking the escalator to the 2nd floor, take a U-turn to the right, walk to the far end and you'll find them in the left corner (South Pattaya Road-side).

  3. very simple solution. Buy a meter from Home pro. Install it with the help of an electrician. It is easy to do. Standard units cost bt4 per kilowatt. . At the end of each billing period. Check you meter. Multiply amount consumed (KWH) by Bt4. If there is a big difference in what you are charged. You are being ripped off. You can threaten to complain to the Fair Practices bureau.

It's a bit harsh to say that someone is being ripped off:

    - first of all: if you'd like to rent a condo, you need to inform yourself on the utility and other charges. Accept it and move in or don't accept and move on. It's not a scam.

    - some condominium-managements do use the utility-charges for electricity used for common spaces, water used to take care of the garden, security and general maintenance. This should be paid by the owners of the condo's, but many owners just don't pay or are not available.

  4. Example Chonburi Immigration - Jomtien branche:

Take 2 pass photo's, copy of passport (all used pages), copy of any kind of invoice, bill or document showing your name and address.

    Bring also the originals.

Fill in the form at the information desk near the entrance.

Get a number and after some time you're expected at counter #8.

They'll check the documents and the form.

Pay THB 200 per proof of address.

Come back in the afternoon or the next day to pick up the required document.

Validity (in case of purchase of motorbike, car) is 30 days.

  5. Some countries, like the Netherlands, put a short notice in the new passport: "This passport has been issued to replace passport number BAxxxxxxx"

According to the Dutch Embassy this should be enough for Thai Immigration, which was the case.

Last time I got a new passport, I was here on a Non-B without extensions.

Pattaya-Immigration stapled the two passports together and the officer told me to keep it that way until I have left the country.

At Suvarnabuhmi they stamped out the old passport and the new passport (triangle departure stamp)

  6. Deposit, guarantee, commission, advance.....all expressions often used in a wrong way and all with a different meaning.

Whatever the amount of money apart from the rent is meant for, you must be clear about what it is for.

Make clear that in the contract is mentioned why this amount is charged and what it is charged for.

Usually a tenant pays 1 or 2 months guarantee and 1 month rent before moving in. Rent is due on the 1st of next month.

The guarantee is meant to cover expenses which remain after moving out (e.g. utility bills, damages, etc.)

Thai landlords do have some kind of unwritten rule of never paying back the guarantee-money, that's why I rather use the services of foreign landlords.

Sometimes, agents charge 2 months guarantee; one of those 2 months will be kept as commission and you will never see that money back.

In case of more expensive houses, you'll pay 2 months deposit, often THB 100,000 which will be used as a down payment on a car........happy landlord coffee1.gif

If I move out, I do have all the receipts of all utility-bills, receipts of aircon-maintenance and cleaning and receipts of eventual repairs (up to THB 500 is my problem). Until now, I always left a house, room in a better state and never a problem. (knock on wood).

Hi, do you have GPS coordinates by any chance ? That would make

it much easier to find you guys.

    Thanks,

    rudi

    +13° 3' 4.69", +101° 3' 52.89" (13.051302, 101.064692) according to Google........don't kill me if I'm wrong.

Search: Highway 331, km 91 and take option 'C'.

  8. Yes..... I should have mentioned..... I am an American citizen. So all I really need to do is get in line as I would if I were staying longer? Thanks. :-)

And take care that you complete the arrival/departure card which will be issued on the plane.......also as usual.

Since you don't have a visa-number, you can leave that blank.

  9. Of course I'm a holy driving saint, but if I approach a crossing (cross road or train or whatever) and my car would block the crossing, I stop just before the crossing and will only proceed if the lights are still green and if my car won't block the crossing.

On numerous occasions I've been waiting at a green light but with the crossing blocked; I don't know how many times cars behind me were blowing their horn or even try to get around me to fill in the gap that there was between me and the car in front of me.
