  1. Seriously, what are these people thinking. They really seem to be trying their hardest to keep  tourists from visiting Thailand.

I've decided to stay away from Phuket because of the new regulations on the beaches down their.

I've young kids and i like visiting the beach so i don't want my kids been burned from the sun due to no umbrellas on  the beach. Sun cream only does so much.

Are they trying to keep the beaches clean? Maybe hire 3 people to walk the beach and clean it instead of keeping tourists away and vendors earning no money.

Maybe if tourists could see more  rubbish bins they would dispose of their rubbish.

  2. Its amazing to think that Thais never even learn about WW2.

I watch some war documentaries with the Wife when we can and she is very interested in them. Full of questions and one of the few times her phone gets put aside.

Even at the weekend we were having a few glasses of wine while watching the Hurricane on the news and she checked her Thai news.

She told me that all the main news never even mentioned the hurricane for more than a few seconds and had more news about Chompoo Araya having twins.

My 4 year old even knows who Donald trump is. When i go back to Thailand in February, i'm sure the in laws will still not know who he is.

  3. If you have a choice of both locations i'd choose the UK over thailand for all of the reasons you listed and more.

I've two kids, 3.5 and 5 years old and one has just started preschool and the other junior infants and when they get dropped off i have very little worry about them.

I cannot imagine feeling the same if they lived in Thailand with all the news recently about how teachers have been treating kids.

Ill add that i don't have the choice yet to live in Thailand but i'm fine with that.I love visiting Thailand but 3 weeks once or twice a year and i'm happy to come home where i know my family will be looked after if anything happens as equals to everyone else.

I plan on retiring in Thailand all things been the same when i hit that age but myself and my Wife agree that our kids will never live at a young age in Thailand.

Personally, I'd give the Areca a miss. Last time I stayed there it wasn't very nice. The clientele that hang out at the pool aren't what I would say family friendly going by their antics in and out of the pool. Without trying to offend anyone, there was a lot of male/male shenanigans going on and it was every day. Quite sickening to be blunt.

I did speak to an elderly couple and they told me that it's pretty normal for that hotel. LK Mansion it is for me these days until i get a condo.

I have decided on Hotel Vista. Rooms look better and bigger and its very close to the beach.

Also i see that Central Marina Pattaya has had a bit of a face lift so thats another small plus as i see they have a place that sells Belgian beer and some new things for the kids to do,just to get them out of the sun for a while.

With it been in the center of Soi 4, Songthaew's run either side in each direction so easy access to everywhere in the area.

  5. He might not be everyone's cup of tea or the idea itself but i found this very interesting to watch on Youtube although i think some of the videos have been removed since.

Richard Quest around the world on budget Airlines, Airasia,Dubai air ext ext.

I then checked it out on Skyskanner and i was amazed how many stops you could make and how cheap each flight can be.

Obviously how much time you have dictates how many stops you make.

Agree with what you say about changing times and people's experiences in the moment.

However, if the vlogs, and indeed You Tube were around in the 80's & 90's to the extent they are now, comparing what was happening then to what it is now, I think a lot of people's eyes would be opened.................

But unfortunately we can't live in the past, but for the ones that were there we can at least remember the good times as they were.

Their is no doubt about it that i would have loved to have seen what it was like back then and i always find myself watching the old videos of Thailand are on Youtube.

I first came to Thailand in 05 and i think it might have just caught the end of what some might have considered the good old days.

I flew in Don Mueang airport and when i left 6 month later, Suvarnabhumi was open. I can remember taxiing after landing and thinking, why the hell are they playing golf beside the runway.

I got to stay in the last wood cabins on Chewang Beach on Samui called  Charlies huts and loved them, but my ex girlfriend couldn't put up with lack of hot water so we only stayed in them for a week or so.

I can remember reading forums back then and old timers saying, its not as good now as the 60's,70's,80's.

In twenty years, it will be the 00's,10's,20s the expats will be looking back at.

But now i'm glad they more indoor play areas for my kids and more family activities. Would i love a solo holiday without the family, hell yeah but that's never going to happen but i'm only 37 so i've still plenty of memories to make over there.

It's no fun anymore, not really.

Sure, there's shedloads of foreigners arriving now (and the Thais can't hide their disdain for them) and they don't know what it was like 25 year ago but that doesn't mean I'm wrong.

Hey, if you like shopping malls and soulless English-style bars that serve mediocre food then Bangkok will be great.

You are just another number in Thailand now.

My Mother  always used to say to me that we are living in crazy times and that the world has gone mad, yet she was alive during WW2 when the world was at its maddest.

I think everyone likes to look back and think it was better before, maybe just to make themselves happy.

I've been coming to Thailand for 12 years and i haven't really noticed any difference if i'm been honest.

I actually think some things have got better, pattaya for one is actually cleaner and i'm bringing my kids there in Feb as their is lots to do for families, even the beach is cleaner and with no ladyboys hanging around it's safer.

I wouldn't have thought that 12 years ago.

Anyway i've heard this stickman retiring story many times before, i'm sure he'll pop back up again somewhere

The times they are a changin'.

We the lucky few that were here in our 20's through the 80's, 90's and early 00's.

Stick, whom I have met several times for a wee drinkie, knows like the rest of us long-term expats, that the gig is up in Thailand.

The gig is perhaps up for you and other long term expats who have giving up but Thailand has so much to offer that it's history is not going to be decided or its best times past in the 80's 90's and 00's.

Every new new visitor doesn't know what it was like back then so it's all new to them to make their own memories just like you did. Just check YouTube for the 1 million vlogs about Thailand (all with the soundtrack to the movie the beach)and you'll see plenty of happy experiences

  9. Thanks mate.

I haven't really been in the area of LK Metro that much in my life so i'm not that familiar with it.

Two years ago i stayed in At Mind Serviced residence at it had a  similar small soi and then the second road to cross and it was a pain with kids.

As you say i've been in Soi 4 and its one of the quieter Soi's down there.

    Cheers for the info.

  10. I'm hoping somebody can help me decide between these two hotels.

Hotel Vista looks really nice and the two bedroom suite is over 64sqm, large sofa and huge TV and balcony. All the amenities look great and its very close to the beach and Central Plaza.

    100 Euros P/N

Areca lodge's rooms are Family rooms at about 60sqm. Its basically one big room and  while the place gets great reviews, the wifi is apparently always broken(not a huge deal) and the balcony has the aircon on it so its always blowing hot air onto the balcony.Other than that it looks great and i  like that it has a nice bar outside and at the pool.

I'm  sure it also has a lot more choices for eating out and street food as its just of Soi Buakhao and its  close to Central Festival.

    90 Euros P/N

I have a feeling that the hospitalization of the three students has been blown out of proportion.

Thais have a tendency to go to the hospital for the littlest things.

That being said I am not trying to defend this guy, if it were my children that were hit for not wearing the right uniform I would be having a few words with the teacher.

Your second sentence is just ridiculous and just another way of Thai bashing. Oh Thais do this and Thais always do that.

A kid been hit over the head with a stick should require a trip to the A+E  in most countries

    Thanks, yes.

The 3 flights are all on one ticket.

Rang expedia, they confirmed that the checked in luggage will go to the final destination, despite it being 2 separate airlines.

And that as it is all one ticket, we would be put on a later flight free of charge if we miss the final flight.

"Time needed for this connection: 90 minutes. You have 1hr 40min available. "

    All good, thanks. :)

This happened to me a few years back returning from Malaysia to Ireland via Heathrow.

We had to circle London a few times, then wait for our gate to be cleared of another departing plane and then the bus between terminals had a near 70 year man driving and he was in no hurry to get going.

Then my Thai wife had to fill out a 24 hour transit visa form and by the time we got through even though we had nearly 50 minutes to spare Aer Lingus said we were too late.

They asked us the reason for been late and put us on the next flight which left in about another hour.

The lady said they would just charge Malaysian Airlines for the new flight.

On the boxes/casks from Australia, South Africa and France it will be clearly stated in the description that the wine of whichever particular grape it is, is mixed with fruit juice.

On the boxes/casks which are produced by Siam winery here such as, Montclair, Mar Y Sol, Finca de....... and a few others, it will be very hard to spot although on the back of the box will be the words fruit wine if you look carefully.

The same goes with the bottled varieties from this winery although on a bottle on the back label the words fruit wine are very hard to spot.

Not so with bottles from other countries, where on the back label the description will read about the same as the casks/boxes and state that this particular wine is mixed with fruit juice.

Very much a case of "buyer beware" especially when the likes of Siam winery don't really want you to know what you are drinking.

Thanks for the advice. So is all or most of the wine sold in Thailand mixed with fruit juice or is it that the higher the price the more likely its proper wine.

Could a bottle of Jacobs Creek Shiraz costing 800 baht be mixed with fruit juice?
