First, stopping major new projects like nuclear power stations, hydroelectric dams, and fracking - which suddenly pump huge energy capacity into the economic system (as well as jeopardising the environment).

Transition to new forms of energy is all very well, as is moderate degree of growth - the problem is in growing too much too fast.

Energy puts a natural limit on economic growth, just as food puts a natural limit on population growth.

And if anyone asks why put a limit on growth at all? - the answer is because there's more to the earth than people. There's nature. And if they still demand an anthropocentric perspective, I would claim that people need nature for its own sake. Human life on earth is meaningless without it.

Human life for the rich.  Will that be the future of mankind.  That is one way, for sure.

Limiting a resource increases the price, restricting it's availability to those wealthy enough to pay.

Maybe that is the way the world will go, who knows.

Anyway, why shouldn't the rich inherit the earth ?

  2. Did he explain how and why a reduced amount of business for the factories would not affect the workers? No trade - no work. Does he believe the factory bosses will keep the workers on the payroll when there is no business ?

Maybe there are human rights issues, but there will be other issues if the people have no work, and no income at all.

  3. ring WW2

    per wiki

The Brits brought many Rhoyingya in as workers.

When Brits bailed out, they armed the R to hold the line against the Japs.

But instead R used the guns to murder 10's of thousands of Buddhist neighbors.

    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Hence hatred for R by Burmese.

    Even "the Lady".

    Karma?

The Rohingya community in Burma has roots going back 1000 years.

During WW2, many Rohingyans ( and some Buddhists) were enlisted to defend against the invading Japanese. Many Buddhists were involved in supporting the Japanese, some actively and others passively. This created tensions which have lasted, and successive Burmese admistrations have done nothing to address this, rather, they have encouraged this sectarian division.

  4. Why is there no ongoing, loud and outright international condemnation of Burma for allowing this situation to arise and in colluding in it's continuation ? Only a whisper from the UN, so quiet that no-one has heard.

Sure, Burma is (supposed to be) emerging from a dark period of dictatorship, but this no reason for allowing that country to develop along this route. This is not the way a modern democracy treats it's citizens. Burma may now have a so-called democracy, but she (or her governing class) has obviously learnt little from her recent past.

Could this be because Burma is now seen as an investment opportunity by richer countries and their international corporations ?

  5. Why the deafening silence from Aung San Suu Kyi ??

Just a short time ago, she was presenting herself as the defender of the " down trodden " Burmess people.

Many of the Rohingya are native to Burma, but denied citizenship and civil rights. Many countries are home to citizens with a different language and religion, but they are dealt with fairly.

    What's Burma's problem here ?

Shame on you Aung San Suu Kyi.

  6. There are subtle differences in the cutting and finishing style between most countries. London, Milan and New York are traditionally different ( and Bangkok! ). Be careful when interpreting other peoples preferences and well-meaning recommendations. There are few short cuts to finding a good tailor who will match your sartorial aspirations. You have to do the leg work. Try to talk to the tailor and not only the store salesman.

  7. Little of the "bad press" or negativity that Thai tourism receives in the world Press is caused by their being Martial Law.

The headline events involving tourists and other foreigners in Thailand are often caused by situations which would make headlines if they occurred in their home countries. Drunkeness, drugs, bad driving, lack of consideration for others, lack of sensitivity over cultural differences, etc.

Of course, there are other incidents where there are no contributory factors from the victims, but none of these incidents are of an exclusively Thai nature.

Having said that, in reality, there are very few headlines in the world press about Thailand, for good or bad.

Many would suggest that those in power now, have more work to do before returning power to the usual run of disappointing politicians.

  8. This seems to be more of an issue in Theravada countries. Sri Lanka & Myanmar/Burma shock me a bit with their hardline versions of Buddhism mixed with intolerance. Surely not what the Buddha had in mind.

This all started with the West trying to squash the East with their superiority.

Correct me if I am wrong.

Today, we seeing a gradual 'shift' in power.

The shift of world power to Sri Lanka must be extremely gradual. Not many other observers have noticed it yet.

  9. A Web address is not the same as a registered Company name.

As long as you are not attempting to deceive, or pass yourself off as some other person/organisation/company, then you can use any Web Name you choose. Many marketing organisations use a Brand name for their Web address, rather than their Company name.

As you indicate, one way to make the site ownership clear is to state it in the "small print".

  10. Sending refugees back is nothing new. In the 70's thousands of Vietnamese, Cambodians and Laos were sent back. In the 80's and 90's how many Mung tribes people were sent back to Laos to die.

How many people are returned 'south of the border' by the USA ?

Is there any country which accepts all illegal immigrants without question ?

Sure, Uighurs are a special case, but so is just about every illegal.

Any "blood" will be on the hands of the traffickers ( and they might be Thai ? ).

Many of the photos show a surprisingly high proportion of women and children, considering these people are usually considered to be so family centric.

Will the menfolk follow on in the next shipment ?
