  1. A very wise and astute friend told me of a way of bringing a huge amount of money into the country which is very safe and guaranteed against theft:

Travellers Cheques purchased now in Europe at some places are commission free, so if you want to bring in say 150,000 euro's in amounts of 200 Cheques they are all numbered so you have a record against loss or theft, Secondly you can put them in a safe deposit box in a bank for extra security.

And the beauty is when the euro goes up you cash in when it goes down you hold on a bit longer.

Just seems a bit more secure than dumping all your cash in a Thai bank with all the retristions about getting it out again

and a future crash on the asian market?

    Sounds ok?

  2. Agree with MaiChai,   there is some other motive behind the "brother's" reason to recoupe some quick money and make a dash to the border so as to speak.

But the answer to his question was in my first reply everthing eles written is on moral and emotive feelings.

    Rest my case

  3. For what it is worth, you can renew a British passport at any British Embassy abroad providing you have the original one to hand in, you do not need to come back to the UK.

Or he could get a new 10 year one before he left.

  4. Regarding the 2 million baht deposit, there are two ways of doing it, the right way or the wrong way and don't let anyone convince you the wrong way is alright!

The money amount of 2 million baht needs to be transfered from a foriegn bank and which you will have proof from the thai bank, you can use this amount straight away to set up your company and pay all costs involved.

Following a lengthly 2 hour meeting with a lawyer I had two weeks ago if you do not have proof that you have deposited the correct amount from a foriegn bank you will be exposed to all kinds of risks from immigration and your "friendly" competitors.   Most farangs get caught by being reported to immigration by their follow farangs who they are copetition with!!!

  5. Really I am amazed at the question!   600,000 baht is alot of money for a western girl never mind a poor thai family.

My advice:  Build a house for your future and believe me that is a good FAMILY inheritence for the other members of your G/F family's family and pay for a good Wedding party....then close the door from any further demands.

You may get a reputation for a "tight farang" but at least you won't be remembered as a foolish farang with his money as they wave goodbye to you at BKK Airport.

  6. Very difficult to break into the IT business in Thailand as many Thai students are obessed with your line of work and come very cheap to established companies.

The only problem a farang business would have employing you legally is they would need to invest 2 million baht to obtain you a work permit for you.

If you have 2 million baht yourself why not open a business yourself there are lots of oppertunities if you are good and you are working for yourself.

  7. Just back back from the LOS and for anyone wondering about opening a bank account there read on:

Walked into KRUNG THAI BANK pattaya and asked to open an account with a ATM and vias card, even though there was about 5/6 Thai's waiting I was ushered to the front and sat down even offered coffee.

They made copies of my passport and asked for an address locally, stating a hotel address they said do I want statements sent there and I said no I can get my balances from the atm machine when I need them.

Then I was given a ATM card with a withdrawal limit of 140,000 baht at any one time, total cost 150 baht and the whole process completed in 5 minutes.

So it is encouraging to find it so easy!

  8. When you take a secured loan on property the finance company will only give you a percentage of the true value so if you default they are guaranteed their investment when the house is sold even after reposession, usually the percentage is about 80%....ie House worth £100,000 less oustanding mortgage £50,000  the 80% equates to £40,000 secured loan.

The problem is when the coucil tax is not paid as it is still in your brothers name , this could result in a criminal offence not to pay, and can in some cases end in a warrant issused for his arrest.

Secondly a non payment of a loan agreement is only a civil offence not a criminal offence unless it was obtained by deception .....ie.. incorrect information was given on the application form when applying for the loan.....so make sure your brother covers his back on that one.

Thirdly it would be very rare for a credit company to persue an individual abroad unless the amount was huge...anyway where do they start looking?  unless your brother has told the world where he is going!!

Finally on the visa situation no financial checks are made on an individual without his permission everyone is protected by the Data Protection Act and the Embassy is not looking for loan dodgers only those with a criminal record.

Thailand is full of farangs who have "Done a runner" so I am sure he will feel at home....!

Just get him to cross the "t"s and dot the "i"s

  9. Believe it's a scam......details over internet and correspondance about personal details as well, this one has been tried so many times before.

It's really amazing how many people will give details on the net about their banking, passport, personal, and last but not least employment and residence details.

Seems one is born every day and girls(or men) like Danna just cream off them from their arm-chairs at home.

  10. Remember the old saying "I don't go looking for trouble- I know where it is!"

Well that about sums Thailand up for me, there are so many farangs here who just end up in a corruptive situation because of their greed in the first place.  Rather than just get on with life they are always looking to make a fast buck by any ways or means and they are the ones who cry about Thailand being unfair and corrupt.

Thousands of decent farangs live here in peace and harmony with the Country and it's laws.

  11. The lands department do generally accept house purchase in a company name as long as the company is operating a business  ie. running a bar/guesthouse.

Which is not a bad idea if you are intending to stay here at least you have a chance on making "some" money while you pass the hours away, as life on a beach for a couple of years can become boring!

  12. Always remember every word you read on this subject is on personal experiences.     As a whole the human race has been bread to complain freely and easily, BUT when was the last time you had a good meal or watched a good movie and then taken time out to write a thankyou letter to the establishment?

The truth is 95% of the people who write to forums have had a bad experience and want to tell the world about it....!

Most happy and contented "Farang and Thai wifes..G/F" just get on with their lives and never add comments, they are too busy enjoying themselfs.

So never believe everything you read especially if you are British or American.

  13. Maybe a reality check is required.

You are not going to get your work permit by people who keep avoiding the matter.  A very polite Thai way of saying sorry but "mai ben lai" because they have no personal incentive to help, if you know waht I mean!   Especially if it would incriminate them for helping you.

    Good Luck

  14. Unless your firearm is something special and it's value is very very high don't do it, the paper work involved is horrendous.

Why not join a local shooting club here and go through the normal proceedures to register a firearm you buy "legally".

One more thing you need to be on a non "b" visa at least and have your thai firearm licence stamped every 90 days with the police, which in it's self creates suspistion ith the the boys in brown !

    Good Luck

  15. To quote a famous phrase " You can't be serious"

jonboy that means you are having a laugh arn't you?  You managed to get a non"o" visa by shere luck and want to push that luck a second time, are you any good at Russian roulete?

Secondly most people on here have a vast amount of experience and want to help so take your micky taking back to the school yard and and do what all little boys do "keep on dreaming"

  16. Once told by a guy in a similar situation to you that he went to a province that were unfamilar about the rules and because he appeared intelligent and well presented they issued a pink licence for him at an address given which was aguest house, and then he re-newed it at his village in Mukdahan as achange of address.

    Worth some research?

  17. Do not even think about it unless: you want to look over your shoulder every 5 mins for the rest of your days in Thailand!

The law is simple: If it's illegal and your Thai, ok maybe you will get away with it, BUT if you are a foreigner and it's illegal than you will lose it and maybe get de-ported if your lucky!

Remember those guys who set it up for you "fake company" ect are the same guys who will shop you to the authorities and then claim your your investment........don't do it full stop.

  18. As you well know anywhere in the world "it's not what you know but who you know". and in Thailand when it comes to Residency it is more paramount than anywhere eles.

Spend time finding out who the lawyers are with the "connections" to the high raquatie of the the immigration depts because those lawyers are the ones who get the "100" visa's granted, nothing to do with history ect especially for the lay men like you and I.

  19. When you are moving so close to the Border I would suggest come here on a Tourist visa and renew every 30 days and just try the life style for at least 6 months and find ist hand info on the do's and don'ts, you don't need to aplly for an "Non-immigrant O" visa in your home land you can do it in Thailand.

You never know you might not like it or prefer another Asian country and try getting out of Thailand your "800,000 baht" in a hurry - opps solly mai di Sir !

  20. Quote from the Editor of the "Pattaya Mail"

A foreigner may legally purchase, together with his Thai wife land or property not exceeding 1 Rai which is duly purchased as marital property-that is that both parties are legally married and documented at the Local Amphur.

Note: ( Not married on Jomtian Beach with a party at Happy Bar Soi 9)

The purchase must be jointly held and cannot be solod without the other partners signature, nor can either force the other out of the residence without compensation.

The foreigners name will never be on the actual Title Deed but a memorandum is attached to it indicating his legal attachment to the owner.

Now that is refreshingly good news!!  As it is also confirmed by a Law Firm.
