  1. “Thailand has a form of democracy, but there is no real balance or checks," said Professor Chambers, who teaches at Payap University in northern Thailand.”

There are real checks and balances, including the Constitutional Court, the NACC, the EC, the Auditor-General's office etc. Get it?

Nope, the 'Professor' doesn't - not at all ...

I mean, come on, Payap 'University' ... Pffft.

Someone has just trotted out their tame white boy.

  2. If thats the case, then an investigation should be opened and they should be held to account.

Personally, I believe the post 2006, military approved judges, have abused their power.

Really good article by the way

Yes, well, you would, wouldn't you? You are so red you could paint the walls, and so could this sham 'Professor' who has been trotted out to try to add some gravitas to a no-hope thuggish political 'party'..

  3. It was not Yingluck that actually moved this man to another position, it was a committee of members who found that he was unsuitable. This would be ok in any large corporate organisation, but not for someone appointed by the Dem party.

But YL was the Prme Minister and ultimate responsibility rested with her ... Oh, I do love using the past tense and YL in the same sentence! laugh.png

  4. It is sad ( though perhaps not surprising ) that Yingluck either hasn't the slightest idea what she has put the country through, or pretends not to - whether it was the amnesty bill, for which she never showed up in parliament, pretending she had nothing to do with it - to Thaksin, whom she forever said had nothing to do with her administration, purposefully turning her back to all the exoduses of future cabinet ministers to see him ( who knows what went through her mind during the sykpe conferences ) to the rice scheme, for which ample evidence was provided in parliament and outside of it of the worst kinds of corruption and mismanagement, for which see also turned her back. She turned her back on the Constitutional Court and the National Anti-Corruption Commission, refusing to even acknowledge their authority - deriding them through facebook and the media and challenging them at every turn. How can she stand up and pretend her administration was anything other than denial and lack of respect for the institutions of the law ? Sad, and needlessly so. There are graceful ways to exit. And then there's this.

Spot on! Run out of likes,so here's a freebie ...

  5. I'll bet secretly she's sighing with relief and glad that it happened this way so it doesn't look like she quit or failed.

Agree she only stayed this long because big brother told her too,now she can relax,go shopping, and forget it all,and i will say again regardless of politics she is a very attractive woman.

Apart from her awful crooked bottom teeth ...

Still, look on the bright side, she's got plenty of time to get them fixed now. tongue.png

  6. Names of the 8 minsters please

From the BP website today - 'The 10 individuals whose caretaker status has ended are: Yingluck, Surapong Tovichakchaikul, Chalerm Yubamrung, Kittiratt Na-Ranong, Santi Prompat, Anudith Nakornthap, Siriwat Kachornprasart, Pracha Promnok '

Good to get rid of Chalerm, Mr Cough Medicine Man, if no-one else - well, except YL of course. There'll be a few cardboard boxes being filled tonight ...

  7. "I am not particularly angry by the photo on the cover, because this is not the first time my photo has been abused for commercial purpose. What angers me a lot is the text on the cover and the contents of the book which greatly insult Thai women," the celebrity said.

So it is not the use of the photo but the book itself that angers her because it insults Thai women.

Well Miss Wattatana, I hate to be the bearer of bad news but Thailand itself has been building the reputation of Thai women for decades. You can't blame the farangs for Thailand's reputation.

Thats correct - I am Thai & studied overseas. The view among many colleagues was:-

Switzerland is the watch factory of the world, Belgium the chocolate factory, Edam the cheese-makers, France the kitchen of the world, Britain the bankers of the world, America the gun-slingers of the world........ and Thailand the brothel of the world. Many truths are spoken in jest.

In Thailand at every level from the top to the very bottom of society and again from grandparents to parents to children - the world's oldest profession gets eagerly encouraged and passed on - albeit this applies to a chunky 25% - at the minimum - of our population.

Not sure why this actress protests about the book's contents. Perhaps home truths hurt.

A shallow woman. Anyone with depth would be upset at getting ones face on the cover of such a book and express an eagerness to help clean up the country. Not so this pretty face. Her comments explain in part whats wrong with Thailand & Thai-ness. How do we fit in let alone compete in the AEC with so much baggage we carry.

Good post and good English, but one small niggle ...

As someone whose mother was born in Holland, I think you'll find that HOLLAND is the maker of EDAM cheese, not Edam being a country as you imply ...

They also make Gouda (nicer in my opinion) as well as many other hard cheeses.

What country did you study in?

  8. It is a fact that there are many more hookers in Thailand than most counties in the world. Thai people should learn to accept it and live with it. Sex is cheap and plentiful here.

And most of it perpetrated by Thai men ... I read somewhere that something like 97% (sounds high) of prostitution in Thailand is Thai man on Thai women - the rest are foreigners. Eve Marco Polo apparently wrote of the ease of shagging Thai women 600 -odd years ago!

If what is said is correct, every little town has its knocking shop, or a hairdressers, massage place, restaurant, Karaoke bar ... I've been propositioned by a couple of waitresses while just having a a meal - 'What time you stay? I finish 10 o'clock' type of thing ...

  9. “We began enforcing the rule from May 3 [saturday] after receiving an order from Bangkok,”

Mmmm.... So both houses of the govt make rules, but it's up to the immigration / police to decide to enforce them ?

    Interesting

It's always been the rule that the final decision rests at the individual Immigration officer's discretion, despite the letter of the law.

  10. Anyone help with this one?

My pal (UK) has a retirement visa which expires on 4 July. However, his passport expires on 27 November this year. Then he'll return to the UK for Christmas and come back here in January. He can get an O/A based on marriage in the UK, then later convert it to a retirement if he wants to.

Is it likely Immi will give him an extension until his passport expires - i.e. for about 6 months? If so, would it be the same cost as a 12 month extension?

  11. Why am I not surprised ... I actually know of someone who gets his extension based on retirement (money in the bank) extended each year for about 20,000Baht ... he doesn't have the 800,000 Baht ... says it cheaper than a flight back to the UK! I don't think that I will see much change in this area in the not-too immediate future!!!!!!!!!!

20, 000 baht! It's 12 grand round our way ... Someone is being well ripped off.

How much do the money lenders charge for 800k for 2 months?

    Should be about 16-20k.

    12k is a good price. rolleyes.gif

Well, an agent only needs 1 lot of 800,000 baht. If he has more he can serve more clients per day. He puts in into the a/c of client number 1, nips to Immi with the passport and bank book, gets the visa, withdraws the 800k and goes on to client number 2.

Of course, he may just bung the Immi officer to 'see' a non-existent bank book ...

  12. This Skyrocket price inflation is where ?

Cannot say I noticed, 2 kg cheese this week was still 655 baht, so is cheaper than about 3-4 years ago, also needed butter 5kg still the same price as 1 year ago, big Lemons cost 14 baht so why buy 12 baht tiny limes ? fresh Veg on the Village markets appear to be the same price, Thursday on going shopping stopped for Lunch at a nice little place, still the same price, big plate, red pork mix 25 baht... went up about 4 years ago from 20 baht.

For sure bottled Gas has gone up each time need another bottle, but that was expected... Mango's believe this year are cheaper then ever before.. Thursday 10 kg for 100 baht big yellow ripe one.. I am sure in all the years have never got 10 kg for that price

I'd love to know where you get 2 kg of cheese for 655 baht. Makro?
