  1. "total damage from corruption amounted to over 450 billion baht, or equivalent to 60% of total sum used for the rice-pledging scheme."

I'm no fan of the scheme and am sure there was a lot of corruption, but surely not 60%. That's insane, no one could be stupid enough to think they could get away with that level of criminality.

This is Thailand - of course they are stupid enough to think they can get away with it. After all, who's going to snitch when they all have their snouts in the trough ...?

  2. Well, Mr Chalerm, I also think the NACC will uphold justice - and recommend that the youngest sister of the Shaky Sheikh of Dubai be charged with not only corruption and dereliction of duty, but also banned from politics for life.

Then it's up to the courts to decide, and you know whose side you're always bleating they are on ...

How does that grab ya now ... ?

  3. This society will do anything for money, Knowing that they will never be charged as criminals. All law enforcement can be bought!

Which is why it will always be a second rate country, if not verging on third-world.

Thailand IS third world no matter what the veneer is you see, of iPhones, iPads and other electronic gee-gaws.

At the end of the day, it is a country with zero education, where the population still believe in ghosts and other superstitious nonsense, and where money rules.

  4. Scamper, old son, they didn't clear an Army BARRACKS, they cleared a small Army POST - not at all the same thing. There IS a large barracks just around the corner from the NACC, about a mile from my house. I suspect the original soldiers came from there, but can't be sure.

Also Dr Bruce, where is your evidence that the monk has 'attacked and tortured' anyone at all, or even expects to?? Loose hyperbole like that just makes a mockery of your post.

Personally I think it's great that the NACC is now guarded by others than the red-shirt thugs. Let's just hope the UDD thugs don't come back in force ...

In other words, this quote is one of anti-democracy and pro-coup....The pro-coup forces are the righteous ones, and pro-democracy are the 'forces of evil'.

I am pro-Democracy and proud of it. In favour of electoral and Parliamentary traditions.

Very good that you are pro democracy. That means you are against PTP and the antidemocratic government. Right?

He's not very bright, is he? thumbsup.gif

  5. It is very possible, therefore, given Yingluck's consistent refusal to cooperate or even acknowledge the NACC, that she will leave public life with the Guinness Book of World Records award for going through public office without ever really having to speak to anyone.

    Well written, cogent analysis, Scamper.

One slight addition to the sentence above - 'or to have achieved very much at all, apart from accumulating many negative remarks.'

  6. I went to Nonthaburi Immi today, got to Big King and Big C Bang Yai OK, turned down the little slip road to go left as normal - fine.

However, after about a kilometre, the road was blocked by a big crane while they appeared to clearing the canal alongside. Great, what now?

So, the way to get there now is this (which I was lucky to find out by trial and error).

Just before the road blockage, you have to turn right over a bridge on the canal. Follow this road, which twists and turns through a housing estate, until you come to a T junction with traffic lights. Turn left there and follow quite a big road for about, ooh say 4 kms (I didn't check). You will eventually see a sign pointing left and saying 'Nonthaburi Immigration'. DO NOT take that first turning - the road is blocked about 500 metres down it.

Go past that sign and you'll soon see a large-ish one-storey shopping complex on your left with a Lotus Express in it, and about a dozen other shops. Carry on past there a few more kms and THEN you'll see a large temple complex on your left and also another sign pointing left for Nonthaburi Immigration.

Take THAT turn left, the temple complex (forgotten the name - something like Wat xxxxxxxxx Pla Chon) will be on your right and just after is another T junction where you turn left.

You'll see the Immigration building on your right side just down the usual soi.

To get back, I just reversed the route until I hit Route 9 again.

I don't know how long the canal/road works are going on for. Wish I did.

    HTH.
