  1. my experience wasn't so positive, took my fireblade to get something looked at and the mechanic told me i had to pay 10K baht to join some kind of Red Baron 'club' even before they looked at it, what a joke. I'd never go back to the place or recommend it My guess is that they couldn't be bothered looking at it, and wanted to fob me off. Though I've dealt with Vikram himself and he seems OK.

  2. hi there

I wanna apply for a study visa for my GF. Does anyone know how long it would take? Shes a graduate, can i expect any obstacles? Has anyone done this that can share their experience? Would i be right in assuming i need not prove anything to the embassy regarding our relationship? I got the impression that any TG with enough money could get a study visa, right/wrong?

any help appreciated as i did a search on tv but not much came up.

    cheers

  3. hi there

I try to get away for about a week every couple of months and do a solitary retreat. I usually try and find a bungalow somewhere in a national park or near water, but i've never really found anywhere as remote as i prefer. Many years ago i sought monastic environments, but they were not suitable. Just wondering if anyone here knows a place that is within 2-3 hours drive of BKK and offers bungalow style accomodation that at least gives the feeling of being isolated.

    regards

  4. hi there

searched and found a lot on the yellow book but not the blue one. I have lived in my condo for about 3 years and have never done anything about getting my name in the blue book. Is it necessary? I went to do it but all kindsa things are needed such as certified translation of my passport.

Will i need to have my name in the blue book when i sell my condo?

  5. Bikes are brought in this way as the maximum cc capacity for bikes legally produced or imported here is at the moment 250cc. last year it was 200cc etc. This does not apply with cars. Hence a lot of bikes are brought in as parts and a book is then applied for. Hope this helped ;)

    Not correct

Red baron and several others import big bikes complete only, not as parts.

any size of bike can be imported, taxed, checked and registered here

Thailands most sold Big Bike, Kawasaki, are made in Thailand, and the most popular one is EX 650cc

cars can also be imported as parts, but then when assembled to a car in Thailand excicetax will be calculated as a new car, so no reduction for age.

Importing a used car, a reduction in importduty and excicetax applies for every year car has been used before import

I don't think that is the case kata, I was at red baron just last week and khun vikrom told me none of his bikes were imported assembled. Indeed, he was saying that due to the currency situation he was no longer getting his bikes from japan, now they were coming from the states

  7. hi there

Having just looked into getting a big bike, it seems about 90% of them have been shipped here in parts, tax paid on the parts, assembled, and then with the excise paid and an emissions test completed, a legal greenbook is issued for about 100K.

However it seems this is not possible to be done with a car in the same way, anyone know why? Is it a different department or something? Just curious.

  8. I have a question on this general topic that i hope someone can answer, maybe kata or another of the more well informed members

What about a bike that has everything paid for the greenbook and all the papers issued by the transport dept, but the greenbook has not been finished being processed. Is it OK to ride in the meantime or would one be better off waiting till the greenbook has arrived?

  9. hi there

I'm not old enough for a retirement visa but have a regular income from abroad, and a condo in LOS, is it correct that my only option is one of those psuedo legal non immB visa's? This is what i have been getting for the past two years (from Brisbane), but i wonder if the consulate will at some point stop approving them. Has anyone else had this problem?

I was hoping i could get one of those O visa's for people with property, but it seems u have to be over 50 to get one, which is crazy because then you would be eligable for a retirement visa anyway.

Its unfortunate that they make it so hard for people like me who spend a considerable amount of money in the country every month but cannot get a visa that allows them to stay long term legally.

Any suggestions on the best way to stay.

    cheers

  11. of course seeing more monks at pantip plaza than yr local wat is nothing new, but the other day i couldn't believe my eyes when i saw 2 monks buy some food coupons and then go around looking for food. Being alone they would have had no-one to formally offer the food, unless the seller obliged. I'm not writing this as another rant about the decline of Buddhism is Thailand, but just wanna point out that it's not inconceivable that one day we may see monks out buying food like us all.

It was funny because just the day before i read one of ajahn Chah's stories about how he was visiting a wat in Saraburi and wouldn't eat the food because it was not offered correctly (they would line the food up and a layperson would touch one end and a monk the other end). He and his monks ate nothing but sticky rice for the few days they had to stay there. Quite a contrast.

  12. You know, I brought mine from the US, but I have never tried to use it. It is still sitting in the pocket of my suitcase that I brought it in almost 2 years ago. I have never seen them sold here. I have never seen anyone using one either. There is really only a couple of places in Bangkok that have radar guns and laser powered speed cameras. So I never used it because I became familiar with where the speed traps are. Maybe I will hook it up the next time I am driving past a known trap and see if it works. I don't know if they use the same radar and laser bands that the detector is looking at.

I will keep you posted if I do.

I v got a Whistler. Must admit since the fines are only 200 baht, I have never bothered to use it. Besides its to slow on lasers, and HWP uses lasers more than radars

havent been fined since I became a Highway Police Volunteer, have police sticker in my windshield/rerwindow and police id card.

So Whistler is for sale if anyone wants it.

what is a highway police volunteer? Can u give us some details please.

  13. Hi there

Currently reading a book about parasites, don't laugh, but its got me paranoid. Is there a test to make sure I have none, or should I just take some kind of parasite purgative just in case. Are they common in BKK?

    cheers
