2 years ago, rode a Nouvo 135 from Pattaya to Somdet to drop it at the village.

She wanted to take the bus with the bike, but relented and we rode 2 up. Took 11 hours.

    Pretty fun.!

Brakes and suspension held up fine.

Small fuel tank was a negative.

    Pretty fun?

So, how often did you repeat this or similar fun trips on a scooter?

Yes, the brakes and suspension don't die within an 11-hour trip. The question is how comfortable is such a suspension after an hour or two or ten?

I thought you were referring to motorcycles.

    390 cc hardly qualifies.

It is not my intention to play that who has the bigger bike game. It doesn't make sense.

My comments and questions were about: Which bike is suitable for which task?

My 390 is perfect for the city. I could use it to ride 500km in one day, but I wouldn't.

There are obviously uses for little scooters or big sport bikes and choppers. But they are different. But then, you know that already.

I've got a ADV 160 it's pretty good, perfect for Pattaya traffic but overall not a great scooter as I've ridden my neighbors Forza 350 and that's impressive.

What is the Rolls Royce of 350cc scooters to buy in Thailand? I've got a couple of friends that love their Forza 350's. Another guy I know swears the Xmax puts the Forza 350 to shame. I'm looking to upgrade next year.

    Maybe something like this?

Sorry, I have no idea what is actually is.

    Here's why....

I had a scooter in Bangkok....   Loved it... but wanted a 'real mans bike'... (as you may put it).

I looked at the Harley Sportster - Saw a photo of me sat on it and looked like a circus bear on a trike.

I looked at the Ducati Scramble (Cafe racer) loved it, but - Saw a photo of me sat on it and looked like a circus bear on a trike.

Bought at BMW AD - Loved it, but a bit impracitcal for Bangkok and had to get a '20 litre soft collapsable box' for the back, cos I didn't want a hard box....    lasted a few years before I realised it was just too impractical and I didn't actually go on the long rides I expected to.

I looked at the Trumph Thruxton R and BMW R-nine-T and realised I'm kidding myself.

I wanted a Honda ADV 350 - they were impossible to get at the time, so I gave up.

I got a 300cc Vespa - Good fun has enough storage, I used it for nipping about and not a lot more these days as its just too hot all the time.

THUS... If you are asking why not a real bike ???....  generally becasue if in the middle of town and simply wanting convenience there is no point at all in a larger bike.

BUT... IF someone wants to get out and about, longer rides, of course, go for something bigger.

I didn't start with those manly attributes.

    I get your point.

There is a wide range of bikes available between a 110cc scooter and a big Harley.

I ride a KTM Duke 390 most of the time in the middle of Bangkok. It's basically the frame of a 125cc KTM bike with a 390cc engine, somewhere >40HP. And it has good suspension and good brakes.

I didn't buy a bigger bike because in the middle of Bangkok there wouldn't be any advantage.

And I didn't buy a little scooter because the bad brakes, suspension, etc.

Again, down to the police and their total lack of enforcement.  Repeating myself but anyone familiar with the crossing at Nana? The intersection between Sukhumvit Road and Soi's 3 & 4?

I was hit there a few years back, a foreign couple were killed there,  there is a 'green man' light and the traffic, mainly taxis, ignore it all day long, right in front of a manned police box. What really got to me was that in my case, the copper did actually come out of his box, not to assist me - he wanted to arrest me for dragging the taxi driver out of his car!! Not a word said to the taxi driver.

One could ask why there is a 'public outcry' about this incident when the same probably happens scores of times every day in Bangkok - its par for the course.

Police and taxi drivers all belong to the same organized organization...

Scooter brakes & suspension totally fine for mission.

    Which mission?

    a) Shopping around the corner?

    b) Or a trip of several hundred kilometers?

    a) Yes

    b) No. Only if the alternative is walking.

Decent brakes and suspension are just not possible for cheap scooters. And (almost) nobody would buy an expensive 1xx cc scooter.

Many of us have more than 1 bike. Size of penis or size of bank account hasn't anything to do with the discussion.

I also go in the mountains with a Honda Wave. Easy to pick up if dropped, easy to turn around on a narrow trail. I doubt you would follow me on the real bike you can afford.

Having the choice of your two bikes, I would use the CRF for those trails.

I could also use my Duke 390, but I would change my tires from street to enduro tires first.

Or I would buy a small dirt bike if I would live in that area.

Why don't you open a thread "Thai real motorbike tales"? First answer and you are totally beside the thread.

Then, if I want something hot between my legs, the last thing I think about is a hot motorbike engine in an already very hot country.

Now go and open your own tales thread and let us talk about scooters, would you please? Thank you.

Please have a look at the posts above your post.

You will see that many other members describe their life with bigger bikes.

And the last post above yours is a story with the last bike being a "BMW C600 (It's actually a 650 twin) maxi scooter".

For me the summary of all those posts is: when I wasn't old, I liked big bikes. Now I am old I ride a scooter.

That's obviously ok. I understand that old men do that. Which answers my question from above.

Also nice to turn on a dime, park anywhere, carry a box of wine et al. Zoomer by name, zoomer by nature.

Ok, yes, I understand that park. Shopping around the corner.

But the original post also incudes something like this:

many dirt and gravel roads, longest ride was 380km in a day (with pillion!)

Why do that on a scooted when can afford to do it on a real bike?

    Yes, you/we don't need 650cc, I understand that part.

But it's still nice to have decent brakes, decent suspension, etc. And as far as I see scooters don't have any of that.

Don Snoreleone? Who fell asleep every single day at his 1st week of his 1st criminal trial?

I understand that part. He has to be present but is not allowed to say or so what he wants to. So, the best way for him to spend that time it to sleep.

That didn't take long. The thread I linked goes some way towards explaining why people cease to post here.

I could afford any motorbike on the Thai market, but i choose not to, would not suit our purposes.

My primary transport is pedal-power, 800-1000km per month.

MU-X and a Jazz if required.

But this thread was an attempt at scooter conversations (probably doomed as the whining experts arrive).

I posted my question because I try to understand why you would buy and ride such scooters.

I tried one of those things and personally I don't like it.

I understand when people ride them who don't know, and don't want to learn, how to use a clutch and gears.

I understand when old people ride them - they couldn't handle anything bigger.

I have difficulties understanding why anybody to knows how to ride a bike and is able to do that prefers a scooter like above.

Why don't you enlighten me - and probably many other like me?

What is it what you like with those things?

Little engine, bad brakes, bad suspension, what's to like about that?

Scooter life is great. Before moving here I'd always had bigger bikes, all the Japanese brands, two Harleys, a Cagiva and two new Triumphs.  Now an auto scooter! Such is life...

    Why now a scooter?

If you 70 or older, then I might understand that.

But otherwise, IMHO, just buy a real bike.

And those big boxes on the rear make the handling a lot worse.

I can ignore the occasional lapses from Biden, because I am old myself. I call them senior moments.

IMO they don't matter, because Biden surrounded himself with able people. In contrast to Trump, who staffed the White House with toadies, and marginalized or got rid of anyone who dared disagree with him.

Trump is probably right about the Washington swamp. When one in ten people in Washington is a lawyer, perhaps inevitable. However, all he did was replace the crocodiles with alligators.

Yes, Trump is worse, a lot worse.

But some people, maybe people who watch only fox, see how Biden behaves, and those people think: That is not good, we want someone who doesn't behave like a fragile old man.

Trump is not much younger, but he shows (at least as far as I see) a lot more energy. He knows how to get the crowd moving in his MAGA shows.

Does that make him a better president? No. But is explains why lots of people prefer him.
