1. Yes you can get fat from eating too much durian a lot of calories. there are facts that durien react adversely with alcohol, people have died of excessive amount of alcohol and durian.

  2. Hollywood13 and other members mentioned that police and soldiers are hired for security. Is that common? Also, is it actually necessary or more for show? I can't imagine what could happen that would require such a security force. It sounds excessive to me, but I've never been to a village wedding.

All villages have a layer of security volunteers with own uniforms. But this is mostly for the sake of sight, "show off" Most weddings I've been in there have been disturbances at night, too much alcohol, some have begun and fight. but it is seldom. But this usually happens after the wedding couple and normal people have gone home to bed.;)

  3. E.J,and make sure you do not invite or make mention to a certain Farang who goes by the name of John Cleese. Have a lovely evening.

Thanks, that was a very pleasant evening. John Cleese did not appear, just a rat in a biscuit basket.

I do not trust his girl, she Spooks, but the Germans are aware of it.

  4. The German are here, very nice man. I'm guessing he is around 60 years. We had a long conversation and he told me that his gf has told the truth about her past, (so she took my advice). He has been in Thailand many times and was fully aware of the situation with the bar girl scams and have taken his own precautions.

Sin sod has been reduced to 100k and I'm invited to dinner tonight. Happy ending so far. :)

    "Don`t mention the war"

I see chaos at the wedding, drinking too much and fighting.......

    Hehe Weddings this days :D

  6. Lying? The only place in this thread I can see the word "lie" is in your post. And, do not believe in a thing, does not mean that the OP is lying.

Thank you, that was not my intention and for your information I have used alternative remedies in Europe but I still

do not believe in this Isaan Woodoo which preys on the uneducated. Wonder why they don't practice in BKK?

I've also seen people suffer because of these witch doctors, they could have had a proper hospital treatment, but unfortunately there are too many scammers. Try placibo Efekta on an open wound and see if it heals faster. NOPE.

  7. I do not believe all this B@llocks.

A good friend of mine wasted a precious 6 months on this mumbo-jumbo and that time MAY(Note:Just may) have saved his life.

Just one thought? Did you book an appointment or walk in off the street?

If you don't believe it, it certainly wouldn't work for you... but that's no reason to call OP a liar.

I wouldn't have used any of these 'medicine men' myself, though!

Lying? The only place in this thread I can see the word "lie" is in your post. And, do not believe in a thing, does not mean that the OP is lying.

  9.
regarding to 44 y.o prospective wife:

i should of made it clearer....she HAS a 'just over 1 million baht' bank debt...she'd want that paid off...and a house
AND she wants a big village wedding AND she wants a new laptop for her daughter who has just scraped into a uni..and she asked me to pay for the 1st year uni. which i refused in the end..so she took another loan...to be added to the big one.

and i am not even living in LOS yet...

as it is i give her a livng allowance monthly...cos her total salary goes into the bank debt every month.

as u might gather i'm very passionate about her and we have spent considerable time together. her family is a good family...i've met them all...but she's always been the 'hell-raiser'. my Thai is improving day by day and I plan to teach engineering at uni when i settle there. The problem is everything tells me to run a mile as far as she is concerned...BUT...she is amazing to be with.

in many ways she is the preverbial 'bad' lady....but aren't the bad ones always more fun to be with? could be a case of 'som naam naa' waiting to happen...bleet bleet

what's the legal status of prenupts in Thailand? enforcable or not?

thanks

I can not see any big claims there, nothing more than you can expect from other women. I would not pay anything Sin-Sod. 44 years old and want a big wedding 80K-100K

I personally would probably pay for her daughter's education at a reasonable price. No bright expensive luxury uni.

If my wife had not been a little crazy and bad now and then I will have died of boredom.

The major requirements come after you married, do not worry about them yet. :-D

  10. S.J-"Twas you ,who made the blanket statement , "that all Isarn people speak Lao, or a dialect called Isarn". I am not concerned as to whether or not it is a minority. Which I heartily agree- it is.Suffice to say ,there is a minority who DO NOT speak Lao. There is a minority whose culture is NOT Lao. That, although a minority, they are a reasonably sizable percentage of Isarn. I speak ,as a resident of the area, not as an academic ,I note you have no interest in , nor concern with their cultural origins, expressed by your lack of comment or repudiation of what I stated. . You are solely hung-up on whether Isarn is a dialect or not. I made a comment that my kids understand Lao , as a language, but cannot speak it. Which leads me to pose the question " Is it a dialect of Lao or a Sister Language?" I feel rather more comfortable with the the Sister Language idea. Certainly, that is a supposition that we could argue about , until the cows come home. I did not want to muddy the waters by getting too involved with the languages that are commonly used in these 3 Provinces. The most interesting is Gui Or Suay. I note that there is debate about the correct name. The local speakers in my area , do call it Suay. Not Gui. Sadly, it is now only spoken by the elderly, and will die out in the next 50 years. The young do not speak it as their everyday language. It has a further problem , in that so far as I can ascertain, it is an ORAL language- there is no written language. And it is not , nor apparently ever has been , spoken in what is Cambodia ,today. While ,my understanding is that the other Khmer languages spoken in this part of Thailand are still spoken in some Northern Cambodian areas.

You run around like a mad bull without seeing the reality.

NOWHERE I stated that ALL Isan people speak Lao. There was a post saying Isan people speak Isan, not Lao. That was the reason for me to react and based on facts and my own experience in a rural Isan village made clear that generally speaking (and that is what was done) Isan people speak a dialect of Lao. Isan as a language or name didn't exist before 100 years ago. When I say generally speaking it includes that I'm aware of minoritites speaking another dialect or language. I stated myself that about 1 million people in the 3 provinces you mentioned speak Khmer, about 300,000 people in the same area speak Suay.

As the whole of Isan is populated by about 22 million people one cannot say " a sizeable percentage" speaks differently and are not Lao. Although true the fault is in the "sizeable percentage". Facts: Khmer speaking percentage 4.5%, Suay speaking percentage 0.014%.

So when 95.5014% of an area speak a dialect of Lao one can say in general they speak Lao, ok? Add the fact that some/many/most Khmer speakers also speak Lao and it comes clear that your post is way out of reality and written by emotions rather than by common sense.

To the background of Suay and Khmer (and other minorities): I admire those minorities and wish they would preserve their cultural heritage including their language!

It is sad to read in your post that Suay is supposed to disappear, a real shame. It can only be saved if the people stick together and preserve their cultural history.

To Eirik: not good examples of Scandinavian languages. Better would be example like Germany. Although all speak German there are dialects so differently that it is hard to understand for people from other parts. E.g. Bavaria has a distinctive dialect, so have the Saxons, the Schwabish, the Hansa Germans. But nobody would call it another language, it is still German language!

    Joe

The example could certainly have been very good, it is rather the person as an author that is not so good at explaining it in English. :D:crazy:

  11. The Thai name of the film is อีนางเอ๊ย เขยฝรั่ง so KHOEY is 'son-in-law".

I wasn't sure of the translation, maybe something like 'The Young lady and the farang son-in-law'.

Don't know where the buffalo bit comes in.

    Look khoey yes ,

My wife don`t get it aswell, we have to se the movie :)

  12. A previously Married Thai woman,who has also had a Baby,would be lucky to get 20,000 Baht Dowry,let alone 500,000,and a house.

and that's what it's all about, once the Dowry has changed hands, she probably wouldn't give a Toss,if the Farang did find out the truth!

Another Farang to the slaughter, but it sounds more like a case of Som Nam Na!

Agree, that is Som nam na.

I can absolutely not understand that some travel to Pattaya and sweeps across the bar and marries one of the girls that they have paid for sex, it must be the top of stupidity. Or is it a fetish thing .........

I understand that you travel to Pattaya and sweep of all the bar girls, but pulls back to a normal woman with the mental health in order. :D

  13. prospective wife:

44 year old female...drop dead gorgeous. divorced...2 grown up kids still live at home. the boy is bone idle and a waste of oxygen. the daughter, pleasent enuf, just starting uni.

1 million baht + bank debt.

    sinsod estimates please

Maybe you should ask her to pay Sin Sod, Otherwise there are many who are looking for orphans in Thailand hehehe.

  14. I dont want to boast about my mrs, but she is straight, she will tell falang if the girl/family good or no good, she has no qualms with this, yes, she has been threatened by famlies to shut up, she takes no notice, in our comunity, her family is large, she says nobody mess with my family, no, not mafia, just well respected,

Eirik, this is only a good advice IF you have a wife out of a powerful family, otherwise it is a risky advice!

Personnally I would stick to what you mentioned before, have a chat with the German if he wants, talk about everything, even the girl, say you didn't see her for some time but now she's back in the village, bla bla bla. Nobody can blame you for not telling things, it's not the same as telling lies.

You don't harm the girl, why would you? You hate her? If not leave her alone. You don't harm the guy, he might not even want to know about her background, some guys do.

So all in all, continue your (I think same me) quiet life in a nice village and don't let anyone stir it up. Sanuk!

    Joe

BTW You have a great sense of humour, love it!

Do not worry, my family and myself are well respected here. I have given donations to schools and health care in the village. I know everyone who lives here and no one would have allowed something to happen with my family. The police here I have known for many years and they are always on my side. So this girl is not in a position where she can hurt me.

    I Hi-So she Lo,Lo-so

  15. Eirik, i see by all your posts you dont have [or dont mention a thai partner] if not, of course you are on your own with this, in this case, feign sickness if you want and you cant meet anybody, on the other hand, if you do have a good thai partner, ask them to deal with it,

Personally, when i have known something was going on with the "intended' And the falang has found our place for a chat and a beer, i will have a general chat about the area, land prices, building, farming, local bars, restrurants ect, and eventually get into some stories about previous falangs that have won or lost on investment, local girls who have 3 falang husbands or boyfriends and the money they send them, and of course, "have problem with farm, need insecticde ect daughter have TB, have to go BKK special hospital"

If the german man asks you if you know this lady, just say, yes, i see her in village on motorbike with 2 kids, her kids? i dont know, perhaps sisters kids? or other family, im not sure, ask her yourself,

I think the above aproach would be an easy way around issues without incriminating yourself, and of course tell the german fella, its your understanding of the local comunity, and if he comes back to you for more help, say sorry, its all i know..

    Good luck, Lickey..

Oh Yes I am happy married whit a beutyful girl :D I said previously in a post that my in-laws mother talking to her, and it gets a little hard and let my wife talk to a farang when my wife does not speak English  And say that I see her on a motorcycle with her 2 children are a very big lie from me when both of her children living abroad.

  16. Thailand ought to be a big market for anti depresive drugs

It is. The drugs come in attractive packaging. They average about 160 cm in length and weigh about 45 kilograms. :whistling:

I thought that was the cause of the disease :o

  17. "E-Nang Ei Khoey Farang" ("White Buffalo"). Who did this translation? it sounds mor like "Hey Nang speaks whit farang" or "Hey Nang don`t speak whit Farang" Khoey is "talk" in Lao, "Ei" could be "don`t" in slang.

  18. This kind of thinking is right in most countries but if someone would tell you this in Thailand ony a fool would not listen or not consider this is possible.

If he would not believe you then he is the fool and rember the saying about a fool and his money, you are better to go and burn his or his Gf house first and then maybe he will go back home and save all the time and money and heartahce :(

A bit drastic thing to do, but as everyone knows that anything can happen here in LOS nothing surprises me anymore. :o

  19. 5000-6000 Bath I think, all taximeter have fixedprice info in the car , if you go to Khao San Road you can take a minvan to Udon I think it is 1500B, not sure. You can also rent a car on the airport whit driver 1500 Bath a day and you pay fuel. Drive time 5-7 hours.ca 550 km

  20. Take a look at other countries, French Canadian, belgium, switzerland, they have several languages, but do not call it dialect. In Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia are the Sami language and those who speak Sami speak it differently in each country, but it is still called Sami. Lao is like any other language it changes over distances, so I think it's fair to say Lao language in Isaan where cities bordering the Lao ..

Like Norway, Sweden and Denmark we have very similar language and understand each other quite easily, but we call it the language and not dialects, several places on the border, they speak Swedish in Norway and it's not a dialect of Norwegian, but the Swedish language. if you want to use this as the standard is not Isaan, but Lao That's right.

  21. If you don't speak up,

    1) she can count on you to lie again

    2) he will hate you, and quite possibly have someone burn your house down, with you in it.

There are some who have tried to trample me on my toes over the years, and they have learned who they can not f((k with, they know what I have done and are capable of. LOL :D

If you have some money then it's actually pretty easy to sue and win here in LOS and villagers here know very well that they end up in court and lost. If they lose and do not have money then becomes the property your wife's estate,
