  1. I don't know who started the rumors but yes, you still can get a Certificate of Residence at the Chiang Mai immigration office.

    You need:

    2 color photos

A letter from your landlord with your address and her signature (utility bill works too if it's in your name)

    Doctors certificate

    The application form

Arrive before 10am to submit your application

Tip: Don't be an idiot and wait in line, TIT cut to the front of the line and hand the girl/boy Tom or whatever it is the form. Noones gonna start a fight with you at the immigration office and the girls at the counter could care less who is next.

  2. Wow.

Diagnosed a sociopath by an anonymous poster on an internet forum. Is this accuser a qualified psychiatrist?

Also an unconfirmed report of what a Thai judge said which actually didn't sound all that damning, just a rhetorical question.

It seems clear of course the accused "scammer" has enemies in his community and of course that might well be deserved. But this dating game accusation, was there a Thai law broken, or not?

Be clear. I am not suggesting the accused is a saintly individual. When there's smoke, there's fire, and all that jazz. I am suggesting this trial (and now a psychiatric diagnosis) by internet forum of an IDENTIFIABLE person crosses a line of ethics.

Innocent or not, if this was being done to YOU on an internet forum, in a case where it isn't even clear any laws were broken or any charges or arrests made, would you consider that fair and reasonable?

I've asked police in Thailand about this before. They say it is illegal to deceive a girl into sex. Cops can book you on that charge, whether they have a case or not when it goes to trial would be another thing. If you don't have bail money you'll be in Jail until the case is heard. A woman scorned can cause you all kinds of grief in Thailand.

  3. It amazes me how uneducated long term expats are about the Karaoke scene in Chiang Mai and how it actually works. If you're a long term expat why you getting a tuk tuk driver to take you anywhere anyway? I've been to every single Karaoke there is in Chiang Mai never had a problem and i'm sorry but karaoke is not just for Thai's and japanese.

Would you share your knowledge? It sounds like it would be possible to go and not get into trouble if I know how things worked.

I've got the basics from the other posts. You pay for every minute a girl sits with you. Pay for every drink as it comes. Have lot's of money on hand. What else?

I'd love to share but Thai Visa won't allow me to post links to information that would help people in this area

Here. I'll give you an example of why I occasionally use tuk tuks. I have eye problems. Once a year I need to get them checked out which requires dialation. Once my eye's are dialated, I can't see worth a hill of beans. So generally, I'll have a tuk tuk take me home. I don't want to deal with Songtawn and riding all over town. I just want to get from the hospital back to the front gate of my home as quickly as I can. Like I said before: I speak only Thai, negotiate the price up front, memorize the tuk tuk number, and I've never had a problem. I'll also use tuk tuk when I'm in a hurry to get somewhere and don't want to drive.

Fair enough, i didn't think of that point

  5. I know of three fellas this scam has been used on here in Chiang mai. One guy called a couple of Tut-tut drivers we know to bail him out and the other two paid a reduced amount. In the end do not go to these places stay away from them. Believe it are not not all tut-tut drivers are bad guys.

What are you an expert are you telling people not to go? How many places have you actually been into?

  6. Used to have a neighbor living next to me here in CNX who didn't have a car. Every Monday at 10 a.m. a tuk tuk would show up - same driver each time - take him about 15 kilometers to Tesco/Big C to do his shopping, wait, then bring him home. 500 baht. So, no, not all of them are scum bags or try to rip you off.

As for the guy in this story, I find a a bit hard to accept the "long term expat" term (unless the guy is a complete idiot), as anyone who fits that description would know better than to go into a karaoke bar alone. But I will say that this is the first time I've heard of something like this happening here in Chiang Mai in the 5+ years I've been here. Maybe I don't read the CM City News as much as I should. lol.

Most of the news is not reported, I hear it all the time from the tourist police, and it's amazing how many guys who've lived here for years just get scammed.

  7. 53,000 baht a month for 4 people in Chiang Mai.........honestly that's too low! If you were here by yourself that's fine but what you're probably finding is not enough is buying new clothes and shoes school expenses and stuff that you just have to pay for so your looking at ways to cut your quality of living.

others will say "get a cheaper place to live" or "move away from the city" and "stop buying cheese" geez. Is this why you moved to Thailand so you can eat street food live far away from the city and have no money for the occasional soapy?

If you want to reduce your monthly expenses and still retain your current standard of living then go buy a house or else I can't see this working. If you can't afford to do that I'm really sorry to hear about your situation and i'm concerned about the well being of your kids not just now but in the future.

You're purchasing power is only going to get less and less as the years go on. Seriously the other posters were right, you need to increase your monthly wage!

  8. I will be visiting CM on the 10th by bus for a short visit and it sounds like the bus station is going to be a good experience. I will retturn to Nakhon Sawan on the 14th, ideally I would like to purchase my tickets for the return before travelling back, is there anywhere I can get details of what time the departures are and who provides a service to Nakhon Sawan?

I love Nakhon Sawan! Bon Bon club has heaps of hot chicks!

You can't book tickets from Nakhon Sawan but you don't need to there are buses that go there every 60 minutes and are never full.

One thing people don't realise about bus services in Thailand is if you book a ticket in advance on a ticket half way through transit you pay the full transit fare. For example if a bus goes from chiang mai to bangkok and you get off at phitsanulok but you book the return ticket from phitsanulok in advance you will pay for full fare from bangkok to chiang mai just so you have that seat. so in order to do that you have to go with the service that starts and ends at your destination, which btw Nakhon Sawan chiang mai there is no dedicated service.

I suggest you go with bus number 99 takes 6.5 hours to get to chiang mai.

  9. The one probelm is that there isn't enough seating - and none inside where it's cool and you have to wait for tickets. This has been a long standing complaint I hear since it opened.

It is good though - especially the ticketing system. Be nice if they sorted out the online system too - never seems to work. Last time I went they made me sign each of the tickets which I thought was odd (never done that before).

What they really need now is a bus service from town. Tuk Tuks, Song Taews and Taxis aplenty, but they all charge roughtly the same - ten times the usual fare for song taews.

You are really ill-informed, the new bus terminal has an area for public Song Taew into the city or anywhere in the city similar to what Pattaya has, it's 20 baht! sure if you don't want to wait get a private ride for 100 baht or go the public song taew for 20 baht! Also in the new terminal if you walk upstairs there is an air-conditioned room with plenty of seating!

Some companies you can call and reserve your ticket then go to any 7-11 to pay for them.

  10. R.I.P. Sorry, but there are no balconies on the 56th floor, because that is the viewing platform, which is normally closed at darkness. I don't know, who is making up all these stories, either he hit on the viewing platform and waited till the platform was empty or he jumped from the balcony on a different floor. I can see the tower and the hotel from my condo.

Exactly! Howard needs to pick up his game on this one.

  11. LOL, what countries have you been in? A 25km ride in Norway would cost you probably 8,000 baht. There was a story about a family of 6 people, taking a metered taxi to downtown Oslo in the worst possible time (red-letter-day and nighttime), which set them back about 30,000 Baht.. Talk about expensive..

And the minimum wages, in Norway, is 57 NOK (~300Baht), a day? That would really make it expensive.

Come on, a 'Taxi' from Patong to the Airport cost 2.66 days of work, for a normal Thai

A 'Can', from Patong to Kata cost 1.66 days working, for a normal Thai

That IS expensive, for this country. Also, the capitol has cheaper taxi fares, as this province!

Tell me one Thai you know that makes 300 baht a day and goes on a holiday to Phuket! 555 If you wanted to go 60km out of Chiang Mai airport it would cost you more than 800 baht more expensive than Phuket!!

  12. With all the talk about Taxi's and Tuk Tuk robbery in Phuket I don't see why some Farang hasn't seen it as a business opportunity most countries have shuttle busses the fraction of the cost of a Taxi to and from the airport, instead of bitching about it why doesn't wait there is one http://www.airportbusphuket.com/ only 85 baht! So stop the bitching. You don't want to wait for the bus then pay the 650 baht for a taxi it's an hour long ride honestly I don't see how it's a rip off?

Firstly, it isn't about going to the airport, it's about going from point to chosen point. Secondly, that bus you are talking about goes from Phuket Town. How do you get there to take the bus in the first place?

When Phuket is the only place in the whole of Thailand that does not have an affordable public transport system, something is wrong. And when I say public transport, I mean something that is affordable to Thais.

Do you even live in Phuket?

That's my whole point! Shuttle bus to Patong seems like a gap in the market opportunity and my other point was it's not exactly a rip off either the cost of a cab fair as it is if it's less than 1000 baht from airport-patong it's still not exactly a rip off! You'd get 5km out of sydney airport for the same amount! As for the Thais they're tourists like anyone else.
