  1. The Tuk Tuke problems are in every part of the country not just Phuket, people get beaten up regularily by Tuk Tuk drivers here in Chiang Mai regularily it's just not reported. They are territorial and their job is basically to rip you off. Most of them are likely using Meth so you just don't want to mess around with lunatics like that. The drivers in Phuket are much more close nit being an island but it's too much to say they are a Mafia, please, these people arn't organised.

I doubt anyone who speaks politely, doesn't park in their spot and barters the fare before going with them will ever have a problem.

It's extremely rare for a Thai to use violence unprovoked (unlike your own country where you can get shot and stabbed walking down the wrong street) but vengence is rife so don't go upsetting the locals with foul mouthed hooliganism which is why most of the farangs get smacked down.

  2. This guy had a Thai wife so he knows the deal with Tuk Tuk's. You negotiate the fair before you hop in not after. While I don't condone the Tuk Tuk drivers actions,I don't agree with what the German did either. Honestly when something like this happens it's usually provocked by the actions of the passenger. Most of these Tuk Tuk drivers are probably using Meth there's no logic to them be smart about things, I don't care how much of a tough guy you think you are when thais attack you, you can't possibly repel 10 guys at once geez. Ask how much the fare is, don't like it walk ask someone else and say thank you. Crazy stuff, i bet he's regretting his own actions sitting there in hospital.

  3. Am I allowed to have two accounts on Thai Visa?

The reason i want two accounts is because when i go to make a classifieds ad it doesn't allow me to change the email address. I want to create a classified ad but have the inquires sent to a different email address, is that a fair request?

  4. sure that's what it says on the website but it appears that only applies to bangkok and pattaya.

In chiang Mai they will give you 12 months.

Don't believe me, call up a language school in chiang mai and ask them or better yet actually apply in Chiang Mai like I have.

The reason for this thread was to work out who has to pay every 3 months and who can get 12 months.

Now we can safely say that if you live in Chiang Mai you get 12 months but if your in bangkok or pattaya you have to extend every 90 days.

  5. post-131828-0-46833800-1314084830_thumb.

This is a picture of exactly the same thing i have in my passport, it's an ED visa for 1 year you don't need to extend every 3 months only once a year.

Same as all the top language schools offer just as WALEN offers and is NORMAL for those wanting to study the language for a year.

As for the TEFL course study, they don't have a year study program for the TEFL course so it wouldn't make sense that you could obtain a 1 year visa.

Even mr lopburi says in this post that you can obtain a 1 year extention. My link

i talked to 12 different language schools before going with WALEN and they all offered me the same thing a 1 year ED visa which i could extend every year, that's the same language they all used.

If technically it's called something else so be it, that's not how people talk here, if someone asks me next what visa I have i'll say I have an ED visa because if I take you guys advice and reply i have an extention of stay i'll get blank stares and you know it.

    RE-ENTRY PERMIT before leaving thailand

The thai words are in reference to the article of law.

No mention of the word Visa.

I have two of these stamps the first was was given to me 3 months after I arrived from kuala lumpur on 1 june and says i can stay until 28 feb 2010 the second one (written above) was stamped on the 28 feb 2010.

I don't get what your saying, if I don't have an ED visa, what visa do I have then? You must have a visa status right?

  7. My passport has a sticker in it.

Type of visa: Non-Immigrant, cetegory ED No. of entry S (that's single) issued in kuala lumpur 2 mar 2010 it has a stamp that says USED but they stamp it when you arrive in the country.

According to you I am living in thailand without a visa just the right to an extended stay, whatever. It's actually called a VISA EXTENTION so you extend your Visa

since mar 2010 i've never left the country, not once.

I applied for an application to stay for another year in march 2011 and was granted the right to stay until march 2012, in march 2011 I did have to pay 1900 baht to EXTEND my stay for another year.

It doesn't mean I don't have a Visa, in fact it means I'm still living here on an ED visa which was extended, just like if your on a tourist visa and you go make the application for stay for another 30 days or whatever it is, it still means you have the Tourist visa status your just granted the right to stay longer.

In march 2012 I'll go to the chiang mai immigration once again and extend my VISA for another year without leaving the country and it will still mean I have a NON immigrant category ED visa status

I'm not an immigration lawyer and i doubt you are either, these are just the facts of my immigration status and how I stay here

  8. Well there must be a difference.

I just came back from immigration to do my 90 day check in.

    I filled in form TM.47

    photocopied my passport

handed it to the guy in and out in 30minutes

I didn't pay any money (because it's not an extention it's a checkin!) I didn't have to show proof of anything same old same old.

The forms and requirements hadn't changed at all and I asked the immigration officer if they are changing it and they said no.

So why people are paying elsewhere I don't know but since I just got back from Chiang Mai immigration an hour ago I can positively say that You DONT have to pay money to do the 90 day reporting and if you have a 1 YEAR visa you DONT have to pay for extentions every 90 days because your not extending anything your just doing the 90 day check in.

If you have the white piece of paper in your passport that says you must report in 90 days and it's NOT AN EXTENTION you don't have to pay.

What is written in your passport that made them make you pay 1900 every 90 days, curious.

  9. Ok guys I can clear this all up now.

    Contacted Walen and Immigration.

    Here's the deal.

For a 1 year ED visa they changed the rules to pay 1900 baht every 90 days (I never did this because my first year there wasn't this rule)

The reason why I don't have to pay now is because i'm in my 2nd year, apparently in the 2nd and subsequent years you don't pay every 90 days only once a year.

They should probably write that on their website and update elsewhere so we don't have to argue about it here.

  10. So I know for a fact I've never paid 1900 baht every 90 days, I've already got a 1 year ED visa so why would I need an extention.

I think the language used in the forums is incorrect.

Every 90 days you go to report not to EXTEND

I opened up my passport and the white slip that reads RECEIPT OF NOTIFICATION is also says THIS IS NOT AN EXTENSION OF STAY PLEASE NOTIFY YOUR ADDRES AGAIN ON 23 AUG 2011

so every 90 days you DONT pay 1900 baht to extend anything you go and REPORT YOUR ADDRESS

The stamp in my passport reads Admitted 28 Feb 2011 APPLICATION STAY IS PERMITTED 28 FEB 2012 that's one year

So why are people trying to tell me I need to pay 1900 baht every 90 days?

  11. You guys can quote any website you like here is Thai Visa's ED visa section http://www.thaivisa.com/279.0.html Updated by Sunbelt legal advisors February 9, 2011

It even states you can stay here for one year and only require one extention!

I've never paid 1900 every 90 days and been doing it for 2 years, in fact I go on monday for my 90 day check in, unless things have changed in the past 90 days i won't pay anything.

If i have to pay I'll eat my words and be prepared to come back here to tell you so.

I live in Chiang Mai BTW

And you study at a language school or a university? Part time language school study (of about 4 hours per week) normally only gets a 90 day extension of stay.

study at Walen for 1 year ED Visa. This is in context to the OP who wants to live here for many years, I doubt he cares how to stay here for 90 days at a time and would be a waste of time bringing it up.

  12. This question is raised from discussion in another thread

I want to know who actually has an ED Visa right now and where you live and if you have to pay money every 90 days.

I've had an ED Visa through Walen for the past 2 years and every 90 days i go sign the book AND DON'T PAY ANY MONEY but every year I pay walen the 25,000 baht for the course and then go to the visa office and pay 1900 baht.

has anyone did the 90 day check in the past month and had to pay any money? because i've never paid only the once a year.

    I live in Chiang Mai

I have started a new thread regarding the ED visa and checkins to immigration every 90 days, so let's see what other members say.

  14. The fact is most ED extensions of stay for language study are of 90 days (except Phuket and perhaps Hua Hin). So there is a fee to pay every 90 days (new TM.7 at 1,900 baht).

As for retirement extension of stay being more now it has changed - but the age has also been reduced from 60 to 50.

As for visa exempt entry I never recall 90 days for most countries - in fact it used to be 14 days.

The real fact is! You extend your ED visa every 1 year not 90 days. On an ED visa you must report (like all other visa's) every 90 days NO FEE.

    The TM.7 located here http://www.immigration.go.th/nov2004/download/pdf/tm7.pdf

Like you said lopburi3 there is a 1900 fee but you do this every 1 year not every 90 days!!!

The extention of stay is for those who want to extend their visa, you extend your visa once it's finished and if you have a yearly ED visa you extend it yearly

Just to make it clear again

The TM7 immigration form is used to applied for a one year visa extension based on retirement, marriage, education

BTW visa waiver to USA is 90 days so is most countries look it up!

  15. Staying legally in Thailand for people under 50 is a big problem and it will only get worse in the future. SAYS WHO? BASED ON WHAT FACTS?

there are fees to immigration every 90 days NOT CORRECT THERE ARE NO FEES EVERY 90 DAYS

Dave, in case you didn't know, cap letters are for yelling at people.

I said it based on my own experience with visas and prospects of long term stay in Thailand. As an illustration of what is going to happen to ED visas, I supplied the link.

It used to be that one gets 90 days visa-free stay upon entry. Then it became 30 days, then it became 15 days if entering overland.

    Retirement visa requirement used to be 400 000 B, now it's 800 000.

Tourist visas are routinely refused to people in Vientiane if applied consecutively (maybe rightfully so). Even if not, one has to show onward ticket out of Thailand when applying for a visa in many Thai consulates (possibly not all) which makes traveling to neighboring countries to get another tourist visa more complicated.

These are just a few illustrations of the direction where things are progressing.

I have an ED visa and 90 day extensions are 1900B. What visa do you have Dave and how do you know that ED visa extensions are free?

ED is not a viable option in my opinion. There is no need to yell at anyone who has opinion different from yours.

There are good things about Thailand, but it's no paradise by any stretch of imagination.

I've held an ED visa for 2 years, every 90 days you go to immigration (like everyone with a long term visa) and sign the book, before you didn't have to do that but after the sunami they introduced it so people don't go missing, it's actually a good idea and takes an hour out of your life ever 90 days, woop dee doo.

THERE ARE NO FEES INVOLVED AND IF YOUR PAYING A FEE I CAN ONLY LAUGH YOU PAY 1900 BAHT TO RENEW THE ED VISA AND THAT'S PAYED ONCE A YEAR NOT EVERY 90 DAYS. check the visa forums if your still not a believer.

    BTW THAILAND IS PARADISE!
