  1. Awesome! More channels!

I just love watching Thai shows that show men with multiple partners, and how if your really rich you can do whatever you want. I love the Thai soaps, it brain washes women to be ok with men who have multiple wives and encourages them to accept it. The more they can push that down the throats of Thai people the better.

For those who think that the Thai shows are brainwashing the citizens of Thai people no problem, cut the TV off and encourage Thai's to read more, like some of the great Thai literature available which is also full of men who have multiple wives and lovers and those with power can do whatever they want.

So either way Thailand will continue to be a adultery loving nation and with or without digital TV nothing will change.

  2. BTW the population of Chiang Mai has stayed the same for the past 15 years so how could it become the next great city without an increase in population it's only the increase of remittence of foreigners and money from tourism who have improved the wealth of the great city of Chiang Mai. However without an increase in population there is no way Chiang Mai will be another Bangkok. I bet the person who wrote this article hasn't even come to Chiang mai.

  3. Whoever wrote this knows nothing about Chiang mai! there are 1.9 million people in the provence of Chiang mai but there isn't even close to a million people who live in the city of Chiang mai. Warm up isn't new it's 11 years old! Tussanai the mayor of Chiang mai is on his way out in April a new guy comes in because he has done such a crap job.

  4. Your translation actually only says:

"I can't afford to buy food here."

    But here goes:

    ฉันยังไม่มีปัญญาที่จะแม้แต่เข้าห้องน้ำที่นี่เลย

"I can't even afford to use the toilet here."

I don't think there's any need to add "let alone eat dinner" because the meaning (and joke) would be understood from the context when watching the movie.

Thanks mate I do think i can't afford to eat here does have the same meaning though แค่ไม่ได้เปรียบเทียบ but I do like your translation. I find a lot of these jokes just don't translate well and I get lost trying to explain them.

Especially this one because you could say it so many different ways.

I couldn't even take a dump in this place

I can't even piss in a place like this

i couldn't afford a bread stick at a place like this

I find in colloquial Thai they tend to just simplify things but it may just be my lack of experience I know you've been here longer than I have.

So mole why'd you get kicked of youtube?

  5. I was watching a movie last night that had a statement my g/f couldn't understand so I tried to translate it but i couldn't figure out how to translate the joke.

"I can't afford to pee in a place like this let alone eat dinner here."

    ฉันไม่มีปัญญาที่จะซื้อข้าวที่นี่หรอก

Now my translation has the meaning but I couldnt' figure out how to add the joke into the statement, any ideas?

  6. That's Entrapment and I hope the guy gets off! The cops probably offered the dude a bunch of money and he couldn't resist it even at the guys website doesn't promote anything child sex *commercial link edited out*

I feel sorry for him and his family, the police must have nothing better to do.

  7. Dude that website Thai dialect site they copied and pasted the text from some weired font and now it's all messed up. There really isn't any good online source on the northern language is there. Seem like two types of people here. People who just want to speak the language and people who want to know it in depth. I think generally people don't want academics but it's the bridge between the two that will help me learn the language and make a lay-mans reference. Any more references to Thai Northern language please keep me posted.

  8. :realangry: This must be the most silly attempt at back slapping ,pedantic nonsense ,and how clever am i, Ive read here. Whats your mission here, to make fools of Ferangs in Thai eyes. They don't want your hair splitting. Wouldn't be so bad if you understood Thai, wich you clearly don't, on a hands on day to day language, and that's from someone with 40 years of Thai Lao. Mandarin my arse, wafffle on. As for Richard W, his Central remark shows hes not in touch, or living with education Thais. Would be nice if you could teach basic English whist you here. This is not intended to annoy, but reading you lot has annoyed me.

Is it a crime to be interested/have knowledge in the field of linguistics?

Would be nice if you could spell, and use punctuation, properly. ;)

c'mon guys let's be nice i'm really trying to find out the best way way to learn the northern dialect and what resources are available.

  9. So if people voted on every post, you would be happy with the answer?

Take a look at best burger/pizza topics: see a trend?

Everybody has different likes. Just because a majority voted for pizza brand A, doesn't mean I have to like it.

You could try doing a poll.

A poll you have to have a number of answers, but maybe you don't know the answers to poll which is exactly why your asking a question. Let's say you asked what language school is good around the ekamai area. how many eroneous answers would you get? Sure the answer with the school that got voted to the top might not be the one you like but you can certainly vote another answer and have it go up. It's about community concensus. Someone who didn't know anything would prefer to go with something that the majority of the community agree with.

    I dunno, forget about it.

  10. If you want a forum where you control the answers the only option is to start your own.

hhmmmm thanks for proving my point.

No problem. While you might think your answer is smart the only way for you to get 'acceptable' answers to your questions is for you to control them. If you open a forum to public debate then you have to accept that you'll be seeing replies that you don't approve of. That's the way that free speech and public forums work. As I said if you want answers that you approve of to questions that you ask then the best think to do is start a forum that you moderate. Otherwise you're going to be lumbered with those people that don't agree with you.

Not exactly i'm talking about voting replies. The option to start say a normal thread that isn't voted or a votable thread. A votable thread would allow all users to vote the replies similar to yahoo answers therefore you'd get the answers to your question voted higher.

I'll give you an example, let's say we start a new thread for "best noodle shop in Phuket" they'd be a dozen stupid answers and a dozen good answers, then the answer of the best noodle shop made by the community would get voted to the top.

I'm not saying anything is wrong with the forums i'm just saying that sometimes it would be good to have a voting system.

  11. What I don't like about the threads on this site is if you start a thread with a question and you get all these stupid answers shouldn't you be able to vote the answers up or say delete irrelevant remarks.

When people have a legitimate question and start a thread it would be good to have control over the answers for the thread you've started.

This would be good for those who ask the question in google and come to the thread and don't have to go through pages and pages of waffle to find the answer.

I know the software doesn't work like that but i'm sure it does allow people who own a thread to have control over it.

It would certainly make Thai Visa look better to know you can come here and get legitimate answers quickly and make those who post eroneous remarks less relevant thus improving the quality of ThaiVisa.com

    Just a thought

  12. Problem with this dictionary there is not Thai translations for the examples to each word. nor is there an english translation for examples so it's kinda hard to follow, seems to be a lot of tonal mistakes too like the word คั่บ they spell คับ which doesn't seem right.

Are you sure of this? (Confirmation or denial of the pronunciation from Mole would be useful.) My wife, who's from a bit further up river, says there's no difference between the Northern and r-less Central Thai pronunciations of ครับ 'yes, etc', and the Maefahluang dictionary doesn't mention any odd pronunciation.

Being a sentence particle, a change in tone since it was borrowed from Central Thai wouldn't surprise me.

One thing that surprised me is that it systematically records short dead syllables with a high initial consonant as having a high tone, rather than as a rising tone. I wonder if this is because Central Thai barely allows such a combination. Such distortions could immediately eliminate ครั่บ as a representation - rather as the RID has พรุก rather than พรุ่ก for an ancestral form of พรุ่ง 'tomorrow'.

I'm sure there is a difference because abliet i've only been learning for 2 weeks northern people don't say the letter ร so that's the first defference between ถิ่นเหนือ and ถิ่นกลาง and although my ears arn't tone death they seem to use the lower tone when saying it I find it too difficult to ask Thai people because unless they have a PHD in Thai language they are honestly clueless. I've looked at 4 different books now and they all have different interpretations. I guess it all depends on who you ask I guess ey.
