  1. YEP... you are doing the right thing. Go back home, work in the mainstream, save some money and then you'll be in a financial position and a bit older to make decisions from there. Thailand and SE Asia in general can be a bit of a trap. As I said, I know of two solid examples of guys in theie late 40's and 50's who are facing old age with nothing because they got trapped in the English Teacher in SE Asia situation and stayed in it for years. no savings, not contributing to home country social programs etc.. now they are facing poverty or going back to their home country and working in old age. Who wants that?
  2. Nobody is getting "triggered" .. forgive me but I think quite a few of us are poking fun at what you think is a big problem but is not. Perhaps Ive been insensitive but I'll tell you something in all seriousness. I know quite a few "older dudes" who came to SE Asia years ago their 20's because of the allure of women and cheap living and debauchery. They are now in their 40's and 50's, have not contributed anything to their home countries social programs for seniors (like social security in the USA for instance), have not invested for the future and are now facing poverty! They have put themselves in a trap. Unless you have some really creative way to make money online like being a talented programmer or very savy crypto trader you are smart (maybe for the wrong reason right now ) to go back hoome.. do it! Go back to your home country. work for awhile in the mainstream, build up some savings and retirement nest egg and then come back here or some other retirement destination then. Don't get stuck in this terrible rut and possible alcoholic or psychiatric ruin I've witnessed first hand in guys who have started living here early in life and never left.. only to find themselves in old age and "ASS OUT". Up a creek without a paddle. SOL etc.. Getting old sucks and being old without any money REALLY SUCKS!!
  3. News flash. The discovery of a new ailment occurring in western born youths having long term residence in SE Asia countires such as Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam. It's been coined "Grumpy Young Man Syndrome" with acute entitlement psychosis. World Health Agency to be researching the malady by frequenting Khao San Road bars, Soi Cowboy Go Go's and surveying International School English Teachers.
  4. Did you wear a Ninja outfit and peer into the club windows from dark alleys? Are you Batman?
  5. The huberous of the young. Wow old are you? Economic projections based on sophomoric conjecture! You will fit right in here! LOL
  6. Oh yea, How can you have fun without that!! Boy I miss those days NOT!!
  7. What's the secret? I posed a legitimate question. Where did you get your stats?
  8. Safe travels. India is quite nice this time of year! Somalia is worth checking out. Low crime and loads of back packing opportunities. Zambia too. West African beaches are some of the finest.
  9. And you were able to survey the totality of all nightlife how??
  10. So strange. I've been down there over the years. The vendor who got the contract to put in those "fancy" haul out devices in each slip made out like bandits... but those haul out devices were just total junk! How long did they last? 5 years? y the end there were a couple guys with some make shift air pump using the remaining functioning haul out cradles to service "customers" Walking down there was like navigating a maze of danger..finally the slips and devices all just crumbled apart leaving a disgusting eye sore of junk strewn everywhere and probably a minor environmental disaster too boot.
  11. Perhaps the Thai police station drunk tank cells haven't had enough guests recently. got to fill those vacant cell rooms. Amazing Thailand!!!
  12. Meanwhile, the window shades are drawn on the beer case between 14:00 and 17:00 everyday at 7-11.
  13. LOL, no doubt. I think this may have been going on far in advance for this new trial. I don't think it will be too difficult to predict what results this trial will have. Possiblly more money for the night clubs and staff but more than likely a lot more trouble with drunks causing all manner of trouble in the wee hours of the morning.
  14. I'm by no means fluent, but have enough experience and study to for instance rent a condo from a Thai who knows no English. Be able to have some conversation with Thai owners of my favorite restaurant. If I run into a pretty Thai girl who smiles at me but knows no English i can talk with her a bit, get her number, find some things about her and setup a date. On the other hand, if I watch Thai news.. I get about %50 of what they are saying. I'm by no means fluent but I made effort to learn 10 years ago and make an effort to speak Thai with Thai people whenever I can. I find it especially useful to do things like compliment the service I get from hotel staff, be gracious for help I might get at a store or restaurant. As you have illustrated many Thais will compliment me saying in Thai... wow, you know a lot of Thai. I find it goes a long way to show that at least some foreigners are not bombastic insensitive and arrogant people expecting, as guests in Thailand for Thai people to cater to them and tolerate their ignorance of Thai culture, etiquette and language. This actually makes me think of another funny thing I see sometime. Foreigners attempting to wai to Thais and failing miserably at doing it properly. LOL.. Like a foreigner making a monks wai to a Thai waitress! LOL Advice: If you don't understand how to wai properly to Thai people.. either look it up on Google or don't do it at all!
  15. My opinion about this organization, if it indeed is one, is that it should not be using the AA name. Most of the speakers advertised here are authors of Non AA literature and the several of the speakers look to be from the medical community, something I've rarely seen at proper AA conventions and roundups. Especially with topics like "Dopamine and the 12 steps". Using the AA name for this organization may very well go against AA tradition. Quite obviously the use of Non AA approved literature and featuring authors of such literature clearly illustrates a departure from actual AA. In this light, out of respect for Alcoholics Anonymous I would urge this organization to not use AA in it's name, advertising or promotion. AA is AA. "Secular AA" advertised here looks to me to not be AA but something else. It may use the 12 steps but in my opinion it is not AA. I will be researching this more as I'm very interested in AA tradition. I would ask, that if this organization feels so strongly about it's convictions of agnosticism, atheisim and the like why they feel the need to attach themselves to AA? Why not just borrow the 12 steps and make up their own name? AA's very principle core is about seeking a Power Greater to solve the alcoholism problem. If the organization is so strongly opposed to this why not just go it alone with their convictions?
  16. Hmm, was the electrical code inspector on lunch break that day.. the WHOLE day? LOL!!
  17. Interesting, where did you get this statistic? Anyways learning Thai if one plans on living in Thailand has a myriad of obvious benefits that seem to be ignored by the majority of expat farangs. Most important reason. It's respectful to the Thai people.
  18. Realizing there are multitudes of farangs who have lived in Thailand for decades that have never ever bothered to even learn basic Thai. Chuckling every time I hear a forang speak with his Thai girl friend in broken English thinking this will actually help the communication. I have lived on and off in LOS for 10 years and this is a daily occurence. 7-11, Songtao, BTS whatever! Word of advice. If one decides to live in a country where your native tongue is not widely spoken you might want to take a few hours a week to take a few languages classes! Rather than sit on a bar stool sit in a class room for a few hours a week! Making this simple effort could quite possibly save a lot of farangs the anguish of the all the failed marriage stories heard between Thai woman and farangs.
  19. So, here is what I have gathered I'll need for my case in applying for a Non Imm O Visa or the purpose of retirement at Bangkok's Chang Wattana Govt Facility Immigration Department. Check list for Non Imm O for purpose of retirement (tourist visa conversion) APPLICATION FORM: TM86 form filled out (with recent passport style photo pasted on it) PASSPORT COPIES copy of Passport Bio Page copy of tourist visa/entry stamp (I'll bring my tourist e-visa copy just for good measure) RESIDENCY CONFIRMATION: TM30 form from serviced apartment Lease/Receipt type document confirming residency there. Possibly copies of owners Thai ID front and back with signatures (will get just in case) Possibly hand drawn "location map" BANK DOCS: (docs to be acquired on same day of application) Deposit Certificate document confirming name and balance of the account IN THAI LANGUAGE (must be at least USD equivalent of 800K THB at time of application) Credit Advice Document ( Attention: Immigration Officer confirming foreign currency transfers into the account) Bank book copies (in my case USD account book) FEE 2000 Baht. NOTE: ALL COPIED PAGES SIGNED Have I missed anything? Thanks to all for the help!! I sure appreciate it. And perhaps anyone else wanting a Non O retirement visa will appreciate this information
  20. Thanks, I use Bangkok bank and USD wire transfers from the USA so I'll probably get the "credit advice" document at the CW Bangkok Bank branch as it seems they have loads of experience giving out the required documents for Immigration at that facility.
  21. Thanks, yes I figured that but I appreciate the detailed information. I've been through this process already during my last stay for 4 years. I did 3 extensions and thankfully it's pretty straightforward and easy compared to the Initial Non Imm O for retirement application .. at least in my experience with the "dragon lady" of Jomtien Soi 5
  22. Interesting. They call this a "credit advice" document. I thought my local bank finance manager was the one to give me credit advice ????
  23. This is for the extension so fortunately I won't need all this 12 month official transactions document from BKK bank until next year if I choose to get another extension of stay.
