  1. I think there is a lack of understanding about the scope of people who fall into the "digital nomad" category the term covers many different industries, qualifications and incomes, the only link is that they all use a computer in some respect.

It's not easy to earn a living online you can't simply pick up a computer and start making money or a lot more people would be doing it. Some posters on here seem to have the attitude of "I don't know what you do but .........." When you start a statement with "Idon't know" there is no need for a "but" as the "I don't know" states that anything written after it is completly irrelevant.

Times change the labour market back in the west isn't the same as it was 20 years ago, technology has moved on people make the best of the situation and opportunities available to them.

  2. If you have your ~US$2 million pot silted away already, why on earth is 500k baht such a formidable outlay?

Think of it as an 'investment' in being able to park your arse somewhere.

USD 15k "investment" out of a USD 2.0 million piggy bank is nothing in the scheme of things, and 5 years hassle free visa's (THB 270/day - less than minimum wage in Thailand)

lets put another perspective on this, if you invested your USD 2.0 million in a crappy 2.5% p.a. saving account, (which you wouldnt) if my off the top of my head rough calculation is correct you would have recovered your initial out lay of USD 15k in a little over 3 months, so all one has took is a "knock" of 3 months on your interest to give you 5 years on your visa, seems very viable to me, provided someone has the USD 2.0 million piggy bank of course

I am sure someone will check my numbers and correct me if I am wrong thumbsup.gif

I've got nowhere near $2 mill and never intimated that I have, that was a figure the guy who previously quoted my post pulled out of thin air.

I didn't pull the numbers out of thin air or my arse. My quick and dirty arithmetic is based on what YOU stated in an earlier post as follows:

I'm in a very similar position I'm 34 and draw a similar income from the UK which I spend in Thailand though I'm not rich I consider 100,000bhat a month in Thailand allows me to lead a life that I'm comfortable with. I've considered and am still considering the elite card but it would mean realocating funds which aside from being a pain in the ass would efectivly be throwing 500,000bhat down the drain and lets be honest no one really want's to lay out that much for zero return.

You are 34 so barring accidents, engaging in risky sports or undisclosed hereditary medical factors, you are good for another 50 years.

You reckon 100k baht per month would be adequate.

    So, using YOUR numbers, 50 (years) x 12 (months) x 100,000 (baht) = 60,000,000 baht.

Or about US$1.8 million (sorry I rounded up in my earlier post... that 200 grand could be critical).

Are you still with me? Good.

Now when I meant 'silted away', I didn't necessarily mean that you have that lump-sum right here and right now. Otherwise, you wouldn't be debating if a 500k baht hit is going to mean more nights at home eating TV dinners (or the Thai equivalent). Or considering the ED visa.

Maybe the word 'retired' that's being increasingly bandied about here by younger and younger people isn't the same 'retirement' that us old buggers are familiar with. The Oxford English Dictionary definition of retired. For example, Mr Henderson retired from being my Primary School headmaster after almost 35 years teaching. What did Mr (and Mrs) Henderson do when he retired? He did a lot of fishing and gardening and not much else. They already owned a nice big house with a lovely garden and a greenhouse. They bought a new luxury car roughly every two years although they hardly drove much. They took one long summer holiday each year, mostly in Europe but once each to Australia (visiting the children as grandparents do) and America (for the experience). He donated to the Church (became a deacon or something) and was founding Chairman of the local branch of the Royal British Legion. But above all this, he did a lot of fishing and gardening and not much else. He was RETIRED.

What I have seen of these new-age retirees is they all need a fast and reliable Internet connection. It's probably the highest priority item on the things needed to survive in LOS. Why? Is it because they don't like fishing or gardening and just burn endless hours looking at stuff, doing emails and participating in forums? I think they are probably still working.

Just because you are not doing the 9-5 you used to be doing but are buying and selling stuff or playing the market or blogging or freelance writing or doing coding jobs or programming or designing websites, it does not mean by any stretch of the imagination that you are retired. In the Mr Henderson definition of retired that is... doing passive things, purely for your pleasure and not much else.

So, based on my arithmetic, Mr. Henderson's story and the fact that you have to really consider the expense of the Elite 'lite' card, are you really retired?

There are a lot of assumptions there posed in a slightly condescending manner. Though you are right I guess stating that I was semi retired wasn't really the best way to put it.

As for the rest I don't want to nor do I feel the need to explain my life story on a forum. I'm in Thai visa bar quite often and am happy to chat over a couple of beers. I'

  3. Though I'm aware that the elite card is'nt a great outlay when divided over 60 months at 8,333bhat per month it's still quite a hit to most people paying out 500,000bhat initially. I've worked hard and am careful with my money which is why I've been able to move here at a realtivly early age, also keeping my money invested and working for me will allow me to provide for my future.

As far as I understan it re-entry permits are only available with multi entry ED visa's and can't be obtained for single enrtry ED visa's I hope I'm wrong on this if I am please advise?

Well I hope you have to pay 500k for a visa I mean after all it's nothing right sure it wouldn't affect you and you'd have a big smile on your face.

  5. I got one about 2 months ago I went through Language Express which is based next to the BTS in Ploen Chit, I paid 36k bhat for a 200 lesson plan the course material is good and the lessons are ok. There is a lot of paperwork to fill in but the school was very helpful, it took about 4 weeks for them to get the paperwork back once it had been filled in and sent off.

I then went to the embassy in Phnom Phen this part proved difficult as I had a few tourist visa's in my passport I was initially refused and told to come back with a bank statement they wouldn't accept my Thai bank statement so in the end I went through a visa agent which cost extra, I showed various statements from the UK and had to explain where I draw my income from and eventually got my visa though I received a single entry instead of the multi entry I'd requestes. I was stuck in Phnom Phen for 11 days whist all this got sorted out, so would advise being fully preped and having all statements ready on the first day.

  6. Re forming a company and having to hire 4 Thai people to sit around and do nothing all day while you do your online work, how do you know that the Thai persons you might hire might not be better at doing your online work than you are?

BTW if you go the BOI/30% route as mentioned above I'd make sure a really good lawyer would look at a contract between you and the BOI to determine who would have the proprietary rights to any software/app etc. developed as the client is now in a legal arrangement directly with the BOI company.

Well it took me seven years a lot of courses and a lot of hard work and experience to be able to do this it would be difficult to find a Thai withrelavant experience it really wouldn't increase the amount I earn. I'll take a careful look into using a BOI It would give me a feeling of legitamacy being able to pay tax and put something into the economy of the country that I enjoy residing in.

What really irks me is the backbiting churlish responses from so many of the posters on thaivisa, if the ball was in the other court how many people who post that 500k bhat is nothing would really be willing to part with that much money themselves! It strikes me as shear jealousy and petty mindedness that there are people who were able to live here under retirement age, is working from your home country online really that detrimental to Thailand? Does this clamp down personally benefit those on different visa?

As for working online when I applied for my ED visa I was asked what I did for income I explained and showed them statements and they didn't seem to have a problem with it.

In a lot of the cases I would agree with you.. But in the case of people who simply refuse to become legal and pay their taxes, and invent reasons why they should be exempted from doing so, no I dont think thats petty or churlish..

Thailand has said what it wants.. If people want to work here theres a process to do it.. It has costs.. Dont want to face those costs then either leave Thailand or stop working.

I'd be more than happy to pay tax here on my income here if that was possible, opening a business isn't viable a visa I'd have to employ 4 Thai people to essentially sit there and do nothing all day.

So start a contract under a BOI registered umbrella company.. End of problem.

They take 30% of your turnover for income taxes, social security, vat processing, accounting, corporation taxes, lawyers fees and visa processing.. Bargain no ???

I mean, your more than happy to pay to be legal right ??

Finally someones come up with an option that sounds feasable if that provides me with a legitimate way to secure a long term visa then yes I would pay 30%, I'd like to get more information on this.

  10. Well sunny Jim I've paid to play worked hard payed my taxes, saved hard and whilst in Thailand I've paid my way and have never drawn a cent from this country. I enjoy living here have spent time learning the language, I respect the culture and the laws of the land and I also respect their rights to change or tighten their visa laws. I understand the options I have to continue to stay here though realistically few people would be willing to rush into a marriage, lay out 500,000bhat or start a business in a field they have no experience in just to obtain a visa. Though this is an inconvienience to me and those in my situation I fail to see how it will personally benefit any other expats who seem to find our situation so hilarious.

    Ok. Here is the secret.

    Wait for it.....

My Thai girlfriend can't leave Thailand she has a job she enjoys, her family are here and has other than for a short vacation she has no desire to leave Thailand who can blame her for that lol. She's suggested getting married which has kind of put a strain on the relationship it's not that I'm averse to the idea but to me it seems wrong to rush into it in order for me to get a visa.

I'm currently on an ED visa which I received 2 months ago it wasn't straightforward getting that it took 11 days and I had to show bank statements and proof of income from the UK, they wouldn't accept my Thai bank statement and insisted on seeing proof of funds from my UK accounts. I applied for and was told I would receive a multi entry but when I picked it up I'd received a single entry which is useless as I have to return home to see the family in a couple of months.

  13. It is time to spend the money in other countries, not in Thailand. TAT will be very happy about this new policy of the Immigration.

    Don't let door = ass

That's a cynical reply, granted there won't be an impact on the Thai economy due to the people who are forced out or choose to leave because of the tightening visa laws. But there will be an impact on expat owned businesses. There will be a few less regular customers frequenting expat owned bars and restaurants during low season, and I'm sure an influx of financially stable expats will have a positive effect to the same sort of businesses in neighboring countries.

  14. 3am is not a time to be out and about in Thailand , or many other places or holiday destinations . People should be safe in their hotels or homes at reasonable hours .

Those crazy risk taking fools brought it on themselves, I persoanally only leave my residence between 10am to 2pm and only if I have someone to hold my hand and tell me that I'm spetial.

  15. attachicon.gifJPY (DFB).png

Short GBP/JPY overall I'm bullish on this pair as the BOE will come under pressure to raise interest rates, and the BOJ is likly to increase attempts to devalue the Yen through more QE. I aim to target the bottom of the wedge then close short and go long on a longer term contract, will also reverse position if my stop is hit and we breakout to the upside.

When i look at that short its a bit weird to me. But i don't know your method and you could well be correct. What i see id daily trend up, weekly up and monthly up, So i would either buy into that trend or sell on a key reversal candle where other indi's line up. Another thing I noticed is your Stoc settings. Have you tried 14.3.3? if not give it go. Alot od Japanese traders prefer that setting when that use ichimoku (once look). Atleast you are selling resistance and not support

    Good luck.

It's in a rising wedge which is a consolidation pattern as stated I expect it to break out to the upside but I've been trading that pattern this month, if we get a daily close above 17,300 I'll trade the breakout. I prefer 5,3,3 I don't pay much attention to overbought/oversold indicators but keep the stochastic up as it's worth noting if it's divergent to price I.E stoch is falling but price is still rising can indicate the move is running out of steam.

  16. Turtle flipped out because of information overload and most likely returned to her binary options because it is only one click with the mouse and makes her feel she is an intelligent trader who will make money.

Unfortunately this person and many other people don't get it that it takes dedication, time and effort to learn to be a good trader, I realized this when I was 20 years and even (realizing this) than I didn't do it right, I would have cut off one of my own fingers at that time to be mentored by a guy who has what I have today.

I'm sad and disappointed about this, "but who cares" I am in Thailand posting this on Thai visa while Thailand is on the verge of exploding.

Only I care, because I do what I do and I value this because it is my time I put in for disappointment in return.

I am going to forget about teaching and focus on my own development, as a matter of fact I'm doing so well at this moment.

I moved away from higher time frames, realizing it bored the hell out of me and I am on the one minute now enjoying where the action is, R15 or sometimes higher can happen daily when you play it right. R15 or sometimes way higher on a single day is really big time.

I have met some Thai people who claim to be involved with trading SET or some local commodity, but I hardly can see any evidence of people maintaining their lives with this, besides my neighbor's across the street who are brokers and we as traders know how they make a living.

Sadly this has nothing to do with trading or supporting their life with sufficient income. It is all face and status and show that you are better that anyone else (as long as it lasts).

The money is great for me, but not my focus. My focus is on doing things right and trying to be and become the best trader conceivable.

By the way if you can, put some money safe in physical gold and silver because you never know, I personally don't trust what is going on globally, we might have to do with a deteriorating system that going to have a very necessary reset in the future.

This reset will be on something that has been proven over a long time ago, and it is going to come back precious metals.

    just my 2 pfennigs

    Hi Rimbuman,

Trying to teach people to trade is usually a thankless task I think to become successful a person needs to be genuinly interested in what makes the market move not just motivated by the money. I've tried helping friends learn but invariably they can't stick to the system during draw downs, most people want to be correct on every trade and see their account increase 100% per month. To be successful in any career requires skill and education so it's strange that educated people approach trading and expect instant results without even learning the tools of the trade.

Trading forex can be a lonely profession it's not something you can talk about down the pub without boring your friends to sleep, most people think you're mad for doing it and are sure to go broke, when your doing well it's "luck" and if you have a bad day at the office expect an "I told you so".

  17. Don't like trying to catch falling knives, but FTSE and WTI both at 38.2% fib big gap down on WTI and up on gold so decided to open some swingers, long FTSE 5146, oil 8350 and short gold from 1705.

    http://imageshack.us...ftse100dfb.png/

In a strong trending market a 38.2 fib is not a strong number swing high/low. Long the period , stronger the number. In a strong trending market look for atleast 50% fib . 61.8 even better.

Yea really need to stop trading counter trend but I felt yesterday there was confluence across a number of markets and a number of things caught my eye wasn't basing the decision totally off the fibs. Came out -180pips across the board yesterday not a good day but could be worse. Thinking of trying to Incorporate Heiken-ashi candles into my trading to stop me taking counter trend trades.

  18. Hi Paulo 1, Just discovered this thread great work I'll be following with interest and will upload my charts when I have something worth contributing. I swing trade a handful of instruments mainly light crude, silver, gold, DOW and EUR/USD. I trade off price action using a break and retest of major horizontal or diagonal support or resistance combined with price action and pivot count as entry signals.

It's refreshing to find a board that isn't dominated by the cut and paste crowd that kid themselves they are fundamental analysts because they scour google for any article that supports their personal view point.

    Hi Chartist,

You are welcome and its great to have you on board. Your method sound very similar to mine. Guess not worth changing what works. For entry and reversals i use candles at those s/r points.

I agree about the cut and paste senario, if the people doing it only could realise that they are selling themselves down the gurgler, cheating oneselve.

    Cheers,

    Hi Neil,

Thanks, I'll post some charts soon I posted some on the gold board a few weeks back (went down like a lead balloon). I've got nothing running at the minute but the next trade I'm planning is a short on light crude it's been in a well structured trend channel since March 09 and I'm looking for a break of that channel if I get it i'll sell the retest.

I've had no problems with slippage while trading in Thailand but then again I mainly use limit and stop orders or the deal through feature on IG indexes charting package, but Internet in Thailand is reliable and plenty fast enough for trading.
