  1. Where is the increase happening? In Bangkok, upcountry or both?

Is it possible there's simply an increase in reportage than in occurrence? Are more teens possibly choosing to go to a hospital rather than having a midwife at home?

The monolithic stat of 'increase in Thailand' doesn't help the cause, even if the overall aim of increasing access to contraceptives does, although it's possible they have more info but didn't disclose and/or sloppy journalism.

The Ministry of Culture makes dam sure that quality movies on Thailand are not viewable by the majority of Thais (e.g. Apichatpong) ....and they're doing a knockdown job of making sure nothing interrupts look toong (ลูกทุ่ง) videos - exhibiting underage girls dressing and dancing suggestively, face all caked in makeup - from airing around the clock on TV and karaoke joints.

Forget about the men, what the eff do they think those videos communicate to young girls?

  2. Quotes got me again.

Had a bad experience with a former wife my friend?

    Not your friend, D.A.

I'm sick because I call the girl stupid?

Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never harm me. If you don't want to be my friend then that's your choice my friend.

Maybe this lady did not use her best judgement but that in no way puts any responsibility on her for being raped. If a woman gets drunk, takes her clothes off and lies down in the street at midnight this does not justify anyone raping her. Nothing justifies rape.

Yeah so we're in agreement? She didn't use her best - or ANY - judgement. She's responsible for putting herself in the situation.

If I walk down the street in Compton at night with a $100-bill taped on my back pointing this fact out using as much volume as I can, do I deserve to get it taken off me?

I said she's dumb for what she did, and she is, and that's all. Essentially the same thing you said in your 2nd sentence. But you and the other dork are free to continue to put more words in my mouth... because you can.

  3. Dutch woman, travelling alone. Goes to a bar alone, gets drunk. Goes up to a guy's room who she's just met.

    Bright bulb, indeed.

    Yeah...totally had it coming, right?!

    Well deserved to be raped!

Travelling alone, going to bar alone, getting drunk, having sex with a guy...who does she think she is, expecting not to gang- raped by some manly men, travelling in smaller groups...

What a sad and stupid comment!

Was just a matter of time before some stupid PC-brainwashed twit like you came along. There's one in every bunch.

Keep it up, that way more women can act thoughtlessly, have no responsibility for putting themselves in the situation & get raped and then people like you will lavish them with all the "what a shame"

Had a bad experience with a former wife my friend?

    Not your friend, D.A.

I'm sick because I call the girl stupid?

  4. Oraya Sutabutr, coordinator of the Quiet Bangkok group, said candidates do not appear to recognize the issue as a problem for Bangkokians. "They don't seem to get it and do not see it as a problem. Many also think noise and big cities are part and parcel." The name sounds Thai, but I bet most of the impulse and momentum behind the group is farang. I've never (in 25 yrs) seen a Thai take a public initiative endeavor to lessen noise in this very loud country. It's always been only farang who have the gall to speak up about noise pollution.

I would imagine Oraya maybe spent some time abroad? Anyway, I know many Thais who, while maybe not taking up the flag, DO hate noise, and they'll voluntarily write about it in writing classes or talk about it as something they don't like about Bangkok. Unfortunately, they're the silent majority.

    [rimshot, crash]

  5. It would appear this is a government functioning the way governments are supposed to function; protecting consumers against utter and complete horsesh!t claims by a company.

However, garnering attention from the pending ban on the claim itself may be an intentional marketing gambit. They may know themselves how full of sh!t they are and that the very false claim will have to be retracted, but just getting the word out there, baseless as it is, will penetrate the very meager brains of many a Somsak, and such word of mouth means a lot to the bottom line of said company.

  6. Wouldn't "Teenagers Not Using Condoms" be a hell of a lot less misleading than a title which makes on believe there's something biologic about teenagers' susceptibility to the disease?

Since when has contracting HIV anything to do with biologic susceptibility to the disease??? I don't find the headline misleading whatsoever!!! It's pretty clear how one can acquire HIV.

Step away from the keyboard, and take your lithium.

  7. LOL.

The author has led a sheltered life. Cute to read.

Anyway, Amsterdam has the same image, also among Thais, yet it doesn't bother too many people.

I strongly suggest that Thai people stop worrying about image, and work on improving life for all Thais. A draconian enforcing of prostitution laws deprives consenting adults from remaining options they do have. That's having it ***backwards.

Quoting to re-post due to brilliance.

Furthermore, the author doesn't understand that her attitude exacerbates the problem - saying "not funny for the prostitutes" - victimization, lack of personal responsibility - is the exact attitude that makes more rubes leave the farm for the city to sell their *****. They can always opt-out by playing the victim card if there's heat. Until then, playing the one-eyed bandit brings them riches none in their clan have ever seen.

  8. What we expect from those drivers that are mostly ex farm workers and at best seasonal taxi drivers,

those guys, mostly with the very basic schooling, has no work etiquette or even know the

meaning of to give service, much less caring about the passenger's wishes and needs,

on a brighter side, taxis are mostly modern and clean and the fare is very reasonable, though

the drivers could be more attentive,

i have seen much worse in my traveling to other countries, so i for one, will no complain,

    It's time they learned.

Nice that you've made it out of Bangladesh. Please save your magnanimity for a country that isn't A) highly dependent on tourism and B ) still well below yet aspiring to Singaporean and/or Hong Kong standards of service.

  9. The fact that the issue of stray dogs is being put to these guys is a good thing.

It's not the first time BKK-gov candidates have talked about it but if the elected is not too too full of sh!t, perhaps it will be one of the last.

Unless the dogs are put in horrible cramped undernourished conditions, this is progress that it's being discussed.
