Got a response from the iBanking inquiries. As expected, and as others have reported here, branches can still order Visa logo cards from BKK. The new guy at my branch clearly got a different memo..... LOL.

This seemed to run contrary to what Nate himself has claimed.
I was looking through his content and various posts on social media a few days ago. Indeed, he said he works for a company and clearly stated he has a work permit.

I appreciate, and have some sympathy with your point of view. However, a low level immigration official is never going to approach senior officials at the level where policy over expense claims is determined. If anyone ever did, it is unlikely they would still have a job. Leaving that aside, Thai culture has inherited a habit of non confrontation from old village society where maintaining outwardly at least) friendly relations with everyone was essential to cooperation and survival.
Yes, I'm well aware of the cultural cowardice of our hosts, as well as the potential for childish, petty ramifications if one rubs their noses in it. Had my share of challenges here - some resolved boldly, some carefully, and some I've let go. It just depends on the circumstances, parties involved, and if there's a need for continued interaction.

Depends. Are you a man of unwavering principles, or do you go along to get along?
I would stand on principle and not pay anything, especially if they show up in a government vehicle. This is their requirement, not yours. If they want to make these checks part of the process, fine, but groveling for gas money? Sorry. No.
But a few of the posts above pull at my humanity and I might be persuaded if they were getting screwed over, made to use their own vehicle, etc.
But paying just keeps the injustice going and is another wink and nod to corrupt practices. These I/Os have the power to deport you. But they don't have the balls to tell the office boss the truth? Why should you have to pay so they don't have to confront the actual problem? It's not your problem. Don't let them make it yours.

I typically use Momondo when I first start looking at flights. When you input flight, dates, etc., there's a link near the top right of the results page called "flight insight". May not be completely accurate, other sites may have similar or better, but for me, a worthwhile look when I first start sussing out trends and costs on a particular route.

Sadly, the Visa Rabbit debit card I went through a bit of krap to get last year (vs a Union Pay card) was eaten by an ATM machine recently, and boy was I dreading another round of Union Pay bullshit at the branch; which is precisely what happened. The kid behind the desk made a call to someone, presume Bangkok (not sure) but they apparently said the same - Our Way Union Pay, or the Highway.
Highway it is then. Handed the forms back to the kid behind the desk and said I would be shifting my routine banking over to our Krungsi accounts. I didn't even ask for the supervisor/manager. I have sent 2 in-mails via iBanking message system in the days since and mentioned this issue is starting to get traction on social media. No response so far. I'll start posting on their Facebook next.

Play stupid games, win stupid prizes. But.... I can remember several things I did in my invincible, younger years that should have done me in. I just got lucky. This young girl, wrong place, wrong time, all the holes in the swiss cheese lined up. Happens 1,000s of times a day all over the world.

Never.... let your guard down, especially but not exclusively, in the countryside - always keep critters in the back of your mind. Don't walk around garden areas at night without a torch or plenty of lights on. When entering a dark room, wait for the lights to come on fully and do a quick visual scan for snakes, scorpions, centipedes... and always wear sandals outside, and slippers inside the house.
And never sit down on the crapper without visual scan around the dunny and under the seat, and as we've seen in the news several times lately, a quick look in the bowl as well. Thar be dragons in the Shire.

AIS 1-2-Call -- Account Preferences
*129# DATA Internet Account Preference STATUS
*129*1# DATA Internet OFF / Activity Disabled
*129*2# DATA Internet ON / Activity Enabled
...so, yea, always a good idea to disable BOTH the mobile data on the phone and data on the account -- just to be sure.
You are always so switched on about this stuff. Should of asked you loooong time ago. Thanks again.
Cheers,

Same issues with those Clip VDO messages, now resolved.
I never have my mobile data on but am being charged for mobile internet. Finally got it resolved (I think) at the AIS shop the other day.
-
Finally went to the AIS office the other day about the continuing mobile internet charges. ^
The customer service lady told me that even though my mobile data is always switched off, the phone will still ping towers, and that's why I'm being charged.
She said I had to disable 4G on my phone and from "their" side. She did some stuff with my phone and tapped away on her computer terminal, then said problem should be fixed.
I don't know what codes she was using but after she was done, I got an AIS SMS saying my mobile internet service had been disabled. And if I want to re-enable, type in *129*2#. I didn't return to ask, but seems logical/plausible the disable code is *129*. Adding a 2 at the end is the re-enable code.....

Just got around to visiting my branch today for a replacement Visa debit/ATM card, and got the anticipated "Can Not". Union Pay only. I told them I could wait a week or whatever for the Visa logo card. Kid made a call, presumably to Bangkok main office (not sure) and said the same afterward - no more Visa debit cards. Period.
Been through this one time before and prevailed. Just didn't have it in me today, so I walked out empty handed, and will start using my Krungsi accounts.
Came home and see on their website they still have Visa Debit cards, albeit in a minority position on the left margin now - main cards prominently displayed with photos are all Union Pay.
Really annoying to see active promotions/offers specifically for Visa debit cards under the Be1st Promotion link.

But we’ve seen tanks chronically under-utilised
Not really. Thailand has probably used their tanks more than most countries.
And, they are really cool displays at the annual Children's Day.

Article is from last month, no new info, but the lack of nav data on Fitzgerald would bear out the suggestion that Fitzgerald's AIS was switched off, or possibly in passive/receive mode, thus not transmitting own ship data on the network. It mentions VDRs being UN mandated equipment, but doesn't circle back around to confirm if that includes military war ships.
QuoteNavy ships are equipped with AIS systems, as any vessel-tracking site will show. However, commanders of ships in the US Navy (and other navies) frequently turn off AIS to preserve mission security, as the Navy pointed out when Google warned the Navy of the security risks of AIS in 2012. And in many cases, that means that AIS is turned off whenever Navy ships are outside of the control area of local vessel traffic systems—whenever they're in open ocean. And merchant ships have been recorded turning off AIS before entering sensitive areas to avoid giving off location data, either for safety or for nefarious purposes.

Yeah you would think they would have sorted this out by now. I have a funny feeling the Captain of the US ship may just be related to someone very high up. Silence sometimes tells a story.
Thought so too given more than 1 investigating body is involved and key officers would be on admin status/available for inquiry.
But.... wouldn't start speculating on cover ups just yet, and resist rush to judgement while they bury their dead. Navy investigations tend to take a while, and intentionally avoid trial by media. Recall it was a rather long time before the final investigation and disposition was out on the USN patrol craft(s) that wound up in Iranian waters.

sorry for the misunderstanding!
I too always supposed the Fitzgerald was returning to base at Yokosuka, but then he wrote :
so I supposed he meant the Fitzgerald was heading out...
Been a couple weeks since I read anything, just thought I remembered some article somewhere saying they had recently departed Yokosuka. Might just be my CRS syndrome kicking in again.

Here is a piece from (US) Navy Times on repairing the destroyer;
appears that the damage is quite substantial.
I was running 2 plausible scenarios myself on this a couple weeks ago but gave up, frustrated as position/course/speed of Fitzgerald wasn't known - only that it was S/SW of Tokyo Wan having come out of Yoko. The comment by Crystal's master about going hard over STBD, was confusing.
Has there been any new info on Fitzgerald's course and speed?

Hopefully he was enjoying himself before the end. Gotta be better than long, painful descent in a crowded hospital ward.
Bangkok Bank Eating Non-Chip ATM Cards

FYI, sent Bangkok Bank a couple inquiries from the iBanking message system. Got a response and as others have said, and I knew as well, you can still request a Visa logo debit card from Bangkok.
