  1. You can show your Oz one which will be fine. Just mention that you are on holidays. Make sure you have your passport with you. You can also go to NRMA, RACV etc in Oz and get a 12 month international drivers licence. Im pretty sure you wont be able to get a thai drivers licence unless you are actually living here. Maybe wrong on that but when I get my licence renewed in the past I have always had to get a letter from immigration to prove that I live here.

  2. Any leads on clubs?

Sorry, yes he did find some second hand clubs at a golf shop near the Warin markets. Its not a full set and not all the same brands but it was good enough for him to make a start. The shop is just down from the corner of the Phibun rd and the road which runs over the river to Ubonrak hospital. It has a large golf ball on the footpath. There are a lot of second hand clubs available there but mostly right handed.

  3. Par 3. 8 holes. Can play 2 rounds for 300b. No caddy required. Yay! Only push carts. I have no clubs though. Anyone know where I can find a used set?

Speaking of used sets. A mate has just arrived from Oz for about 5 weeks and also wants to play golf while here. The only problem is that he is cacky handed (left handed) which would be harder to find than normal clubs, especially second hand clubs. Anybody can point us in the right direction

  4. If you look directly opposite the registration office entrance on the ring road and go about 100 m towards the Big C traffic lights there is the inspection bay that we use. Very good and quick. I think it is opposite the big Honda motorbike dealership.

    Hope this helps

Thanks a lot! Where's the registration office on ring road? How do I get there from let's say i make a right turn coming from Sapphasit Rd into Ring Road?

What's the place called in Thai? Thanks in advance.-wai2.gif

Ok, as you come from Sapphasit road you go under the ring road and come out on the opposite side of the road and head towards the Yasathon Rd traffic lights. Keep on the ring road and continue to the Amnat Rd traffic lights (near Big C). Stay on the ring road and after about 2 km you will see on your left side a large Honda motorcycle dealership with a rider training track next to it. 100m past there is a 7/11 which is on the entrance into the motor registration. There will be heaps of cars/motorbikes/trucks going in there.

    Hope I haven't confused you.

  5. I know that you said apart from Rutnin but I found Dr Roy at Rutnin hospital very good. I had mine repaired in 2009 but have been back there quite a few time to have other things looked at. I found this place the best that I have seen.

Do you remember how much it cost? I had one 3 years ago in Chiang Mai and I was quoted $3000 but decided to fly straight home and do it in Aus for $10 000.

Interested just for future reference as it looks like I am prone to them and hope to be living there in the next year.

It cost about 90,000 baht all up. This included 2 or 3 nights in the hospital plus post op consultations. Dr Roy is thai but obviously trained in the US as he speaks with an American accent. Keeps you well informed at all times.

  7. Hello,

I am currently receiving a disability pension for injuries sustained during my military career in Australia. These injuries have been diagnosed and accepted as defence related injuries by the Australian Dept of Veterans Affairs. I am in the process of claiming for an increase of this pension due to worsening of these injuries. I can submit the forms from here in Thailand and the assessment can be conducted here in Thailand. Dept of Vet Affairs will send the forms directly to the doctor that I select and name on the claim form.

I am located in Ubon Ratchathani and have tried to find a doctor here in Ubon who has the required English skills to interpret the instructions on the assessment forms. I have already approached one doctor whose English was good but as he was only a GP (his words), he wasn't prepared to help. As yet my search has been fruitless. I realize now that I will have to travel to other parts in Thailand to find someone who could understand the assessment form and conduct the assessment.

So I am asking if anybody has knowledge of native English speaking doctor (ideally an Australian) working at a hospital in Thailand who I could contact to organize this assessment. Obviously the closer to Ubon would be better but would be prepared to travel to Pattaya, Bangkok, etc if required.

    Thanks for any input

  8. I have just been down to the Rutnin eye hospital this week in Bangkok for a check up and found no problems at all. Travelling between Don Muang airport and the hospital location was without any drama at all. I also had concerns before I travelled down this week about disruptions but there was no problems at all. Sorry that I didn't answer your question but I thought I would let you know of my experience this week.

  9. What is internet like in the villages in Ubon? Let's say within 40km of the city?

If you are in a village I would guess that the only carrier to give you internet access would be TOT. Friends of mine from Khemarat (larger town 100km north) can only get TOT wired internet to their house. I also have friends just on the fringe of Ubon city who can only have TOT internet. They have asked 3BB for internet but have been told that they are too far out for their service.

  10. What kind of cable did 3BB bring to your house? Is it the coaxial cable? Does it go into a cable modem box in your house and what kind of cable cones out of that box, Ethernet?

Sent from my iPhone using Thaivisa Connect Thailand mobile app

I would say that the cable that is run to the house would be just ordinary copper phone cable and is then connected to the phone outlet in the wall. A modem is then connected to this outlet and I can connect either by Ethernet cable or wireless connection to the internet.

    Hope this helps

  11. I use 3BB and have found the service very good. They are advertising fibre optic to the house but I believe this is dependent on where you live in Ubon city. There is a cable TV service called Suphon or something like that but it is only in certain areas of the city.

  12. Sorry for going a bit off track on this thread. My step-daughter who is now living in Australia is about to gain Australian citizenship in the next couple of weeks. She has indicated to me that she would like to buy some land over here (Thailand) and have the title/chanote in her name. As she still has her ID card, Thai Passport will she still be able to own land here once she gets her Australian citizenship.

    Thanks

  13. Try looking at agoda.

Tried that but when I looked up on Agoda for both Majestic and Thong Tarin for Jan and Dec both had no available rooms for those dates. Not sure if its a problem with Agoda and those hotels but thought I would ask for any more local input.

  14. I have a friend wanting to stay in Surin city in 3rd week of Jan 2014. About 6 or 7 years ago I stayed in the then newly opened Majestic Hotel near the bus station. I found the hotel then was quite good for a couple of days stay. Is this hotel still ok or is there another hotel in Surin city which is the same standard. My friend definately wants to stay in a hotel with a swimming pool. Any advice would be appreciated.

  15. Steve, there is a good pharmacy on the road adjacent to the Mun river before you go over the bridge to Warin. Its on the corner opposite a Yamaha motorbike dealer. Mind you the road is a one way road so you would need to find a road to get there. I have used this guy for many years and found him to much cheaper than the private hospital pharmacies. Hope this helps

  16. 300 baht day for skilled work (someone who knows what they're doing) 200 to 250 baht a day for labourers. Lunch and cool drinks also provided.

Who determines if they are skilled or not. I pay my brother in law 200 baht per day plus a feed. He is happy with that plus I throw him the occasional bottle of beer (I refuse to buy the Lao Khao for them).

  17. Do Peppers have a website with all their products listed and priced.

Watch this space as its coming soon. I have just sold the business and the new owners will be updating and creating the new website shortly. On saying that, I would like to thank all of my many customers and friends that have supported me over the past 3.5 years. I have had a wonderful time chatting over a cuppa or two and meeting the varying characters that make up this wonderful city of Ubon. I will be taking a break for a couple of months then think about whats next.

The new owners are Julian and Uriel and they bring a wealth of experience to Peppers as they come from a strong restaurant back ground in the US. I would like to welcome them to Ubon Ratchathani and I wish them every success in their new business at Peppers Bakery.

Cheers to you all and thank you again.

    Regards

    John

Only been to Peppers once since I don't get out much but it were great, only good things to say about the place. The food were great and the kids loved the whole cake I bought, gone in less than 30 minutes.

I wish the new owners all the best of luck and I will try to drop by when I can. One suggestions is if you have a bakery there make the brown bread, I think its called Rye bread and I am Danish and I know I am not the only one looking for real bread.

https://www.google.com/search?q=rugbroed&safe=off&espv=210&es_sm=93&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=TmFyUvj9JIaLrQf6kYDoDg&ved=0CAkQ_AUoAQ&biw=1360&bih=677 this is wht I am talking about and I am sure you have it Germany as well

Im pretty sure rye bread is available in the bakery section at the new Tops supermarket in Central Plaza. Just to put my 2 cents worth I think that the white and brown bread at Peppers is far superior to any bread you will find at Big C, Tesco or Makro. If you want to taste some really sickly sweet white bread go to the Phillipines and buy their version of white bread.

  18. Still not as bad as the kite flying season during Dec/Jan. Every village seems to have these ridiculous kits flying that generate a noise that can be heard for miles around. Not so bad during the day but at night when you are trying to sleep its unbearable. I have been known to hunt around for the end of the rope with a machete in hand.

  19. Last week I had two friends visiting in Ubon and they stayed at Sunee. I visited them there and was very impressed by the hotel. The rooms are very large and set up very nicely. They were impressed by the access to all the facilities available in the shopping and entertainment area. They rate their stay there as one of the best they have had in their travels. I would have no problems recommending this hotel to anyone visiting Ubon.
