  1. Hi sezzo, it's me Jeff. You're right, just so bloody cold here and bit homesick. How's things for you here.

    Cheers jeff

Jeff, you are in Sydney mate, cant be feeling the cold there. Come to Canberra for a visit and you will know cold. I will PM you my phone number. Give us a call

  2. Thanks guys for the info, need to decide to finish my treatment in Australia or come home.

    Cheers

i have been as a visitor to the cancer hospital in Ubon a few times over the years and I don't think I would like to be there as a patient. I cant comment on their procedures or standards of care but being a government hospital the place seems to be always teeming with relatives and other hangers on which is very offputting. I have also been to Sappasit hospital quite a few times visiting friends who are "imprisoned" there and there is no way that I could spend any time there recovering from an op or treatment. The swarm of people hanging around would drive me crazy. On the occasions that I have needed medical care in Thailand it has mostly been in private hospitals where you can get some personal space.

Having said all that, I see that you are still in Australia and if it was me I would continue with the treatment before you return.

    Just my two cents worth.

  3. There is a shop that sells the compressed air plastic pellets and guns in the Big C Bazaar complex. I think it is in the first building back from MacDonalds. They mostly have cam uniforms hanging up and have a few guns on display. I went there to see if I could get the young blokes gun which I bought in Chiang Mai fixed. He showed me some really flash pistols as well as M16 style guns.

    Hope this helps

  4. I sent a document that required an original signature to Australia a couple of years ago via the EMS service at the Post Office on the Ring road. Was very impressed by the service. Would use them again if I had to.

  5. Next time you are in Surin, just drive around the areas where you may be interested in living and have a look for For Rent or For Sale signs. Speak to the security guards at the housing developments as they would know if anything is available. The same goes if there are any mini marts or salons close by. Check out some of the expat bars as I have seen here in Ubon that some people advertise their places for rent where other farangs congregate. If you have the time to spend searching you will find something eventually. Good Luck

  6. More specifically I see them vendors on the ring road between the Big C traffic lights and the traffic lights at the intersection that goes to Trakan Phuetphon. Sorry don't know the names of the roads or numbers.

  7. The English Program (EP) term fees for my step son in year 6 at YES2 is 35000 baht plus uniforms and books. You can also get an extra period of tuition in any subject for 3900 baht per term which I did, but you may as well throw that money in the toilet as most weeks you might get one extra tuition period. Teachers are either "at a meeting" or "supervising a test" or some other lame excuse. Initially they were great teaching him to read and write thai but the rest of his education there has been poor in my mind.

  8. Six of one, half a dozen of the other. I have driven both ways quite a few times and the road either way is good, so no difference. When I have visitors I go to Khong Chiam/Pha Taem via Phibun and then 2222 and then on the return trip go the alternate way and visit the gardens at Sirindorn Dam. Something different.

  9. Water. 250 baht seems low. Do you have a lawn that needs watering during non-rainy seasons? Have a hot water tank? If no to both, then perhaps 500 baht a month will work. If you have a large yard (i.e., 75 sq. wa or more) with bushes & flowers & trees to maintain, I'd plan for 1,000 baht per month with the occasional 1,200 baht bill.

Internet. I doubt you'll get even a poor package for 650 baht, unless dial-up is still an option. 1,000-2,000 baht is the range you'll probably be dealing with.

We live in Ubon city in a housing development. Our land is 87 Sq wa and we have a lot of lawn and many shrubs which are watered up to 3 times per day at this time of the year. There is the 3 of us living here and our water bill per month never exceeds 250 baht.

We are on 3BB internet 10mb plan for 630 (incl VAT) with unlimited downloads. Never a problem with internet and I Skype and download movies all day.

Just adding my 2 cents worth

  10. Sorry guys for going off topic but its been years since I last visited Farang Connection (when Martin ran it) and Im trying to remember if they had a pool table. I have a mate going there in march and he likes to play pool over a few beers.

    Thanks

  11. Pha Taem is worth a look. There are a number of walks to do around the park including one under a cliff which shows the very old hand paintings. Great views on top of the cliff. There is a camping ground not far from the entrance to the park. Don't know the costs but Im sure the rangers at the park entrance will let you know.

  12. Sabiang restaurant opened last month on its new location on the "Hat Ku Dua" rd. It's the first restaurant on the left hand side, when driving in from the ring rd,

To be more spesific, when driving the ring road from Global to Central, turn left after the bridge and you'll find it on the river side after a few hundred meters. Good food, cold beer, and the owner (from Kuala Lumpur). speaks English..............smile.png

I went there a few weeks ago. Food was good and the outside dining area was well set up with good, strong furniture. Worth a visit

  13. Just rehashing this thread as Im considering pulling my stepson from YES school in Ubon and find an alternative. Totally pissed off with YES as the English Program Class 6 seem to be sitting around unsupervised all day doing nothing while the teachers are taken away for so called meetings or other duties. The class size is only 6 students and they seem to be getting ignored for studies in favour of other duties to make the school more attractive for prospective students. My stepson has been always told to enter the English speech contest not because he learnt his English at the school but because he can speak, read and write English from his 4 years in Australia. They seem to be hell bent on showing how good or attractive they are but not actually teaching anything. Some of their so called native english speaking teachers leave a lot to be desired as I have already had to correct their mistakes as I review his workbooks. Ok, that rant is over with.

I was considering sending him to Assumption but after reading the report on Issanstyle blog above I am having second thoughts. I have posted before on TV about not wanting to send him to a catholic/religious based school as I want him to remain a Buddhist and not have Christianity shoved down his throat.

Has anyone out there got some up to date reviews or information about Assumption, Ave Maria or other school in Ubon which may suit. Please don't mention the Seventh Day Adventist school as I have ex-family in Australia involved in that crazy mob and will not send him there.

    Thanks,

    Carl

  15. I have had 3 friends and their partners stay at the Sunee Grande in the past 6 months and all of them have given me glowing reports of the hotel. I have seen their rooms and on one occasion the Junior Suite and the rooms are great. The close proximity to the shopping mall with heaps of good restaurants, the cinema/bowling complex and the water park are part of the reasons they enjoyed the place. The hotel has a good gym setup with a very nice swimming pool. I would always recommend this hotel for people visiting Ubon
