  1. Hello,

I recently bought a new desktop computer with the normal pirate copy of Windows 7 that is normally loaded on new computers. As I like to be able to receive updates on Windows I got a registered copy of Windows 7 Ultimate along with the activation code. I had this loaded and everything seemed ok until I attempted to connect to the internet. My computer now will not recognise my internet modem/router at all. The funny thing is that it recognises 4 other wireless modems/routers in the neighbourhood. I have my lapstop sitting next to the desktop computer and it is connected correctly to the modem. I have attempted to connect through the control panel headings of Internet Options and Newtwork Sharing??? with no luck. I keep on getting an error message saying there is an error with the modem which I would think is immposible as my laptop is working perfectly.

Any hints on what I can do to get the desktop to recognise the modem. I have tried to power off and on the modem many times.

    Thanks in advance.

There must be someone out there who has specific knowledge of YES.

Ave Maria is about 1,000 baht per month for the 5 year old, 2,000 baht per month for the 3 year old.

Assumption also has a 6,500 baht per semester (2 semesters) non english program.

My 10 year old step son is attending YES2 school in Ubon. He has been there since the start of this school year after being schooled in Australian government school for about 4 years. I have some comments to make on this thread in relation to the questions asked but at the moment I am having some eyesight problems and its very difficult for me to read the screen, school syllabus etc. Bear with me for a few days and I will get back to this thread. Overall I am satisfied with the school but I will elaborate at a later stage.

    Thanks

    Hello Sezzo,

Eyesight problems. Cataracts? I just got my cataracts done at Dr Sima in Ubon. Both eyes. Right one three weeks ago and left one one week ago. After 50 years of wearing spectacles I now don't have to wear any at all. Can't believe it. Wear dark glasses outside. Now I can drive, work, type watch TV, read books with no spectacles. In mid November I go back for a check up on the right eye. Still not perfect says Dr Sima. Then, maybe I have to get some reading glasses for fine print but he can't prescribe these yet until he doers the final touch up on the right eye next month.

Not cataracts. Had them done a few years ago. After each op Ive had detached retinas which needed to be repaired. Ive had problems before with infections which blur the vision. Im off to see the opthamologist that did the last retinal detchment repair tomorrow. Hopefully I will be able to get some drops and fixed up the problem.

  4. Ubon immigration won't give my friend with a non "O" a proof of residence doc until he's been here 3 months. I guess it's off to BKK embassy. Just FYI.

Same old question guys, and I apologise, but the 3 month grace period for renewing a 5 year driving license, is it 3 months before or 3 months after the expiry date??

It's a bit of a non-sense question but I know that in the past in Phuket one could not renew until the date of expiry.

Can't make head or tail of my GF's interpretation either!!!

    Thanks,

    Chris

I renewed my 5 year licence in May which was 1 month before my due date. I was told at the Ubon office that you can renew the licence up to 3 months prior to the due date and it will be valid from the due date. PEP who posted before in this thread also renewed his 5 year licence about 2 weeks after the due date. Reason for late renewal was because he was overseas. No probs renewing it.

  5. Wonderful prose and imagery.smile.png

    Wholeheartedly endorse this comment.

Thanks Jim - hope the thread isn't hi-jacked by the bitter brigade. No doubt about it mate, you certainly turn out some interesting comments on the Isaan thread.

Ditto with these remarks. Having visited Jims village once, I can certainly visualise his description well. Maybe Jim has another calling instead of being the rubber baron of his area.

  6. Does anybody have any ideas of a good pool/s in Ubon where one could do some casual lap swimming. The only ones I have seen are attached to the bigger hotels. Sunee grand would be more suited for kids playing, and the other I have seen wouldnt be suited.

    Thanks for any ideas

  7. Is Louie back running the NJoy or just frequenting the place. Havent seen him for years. Will try and catch up with him

Louie and his wife Eet owns the place, but it is run by Rattana and her staff.

Btw, I will be in Ubon on Friday if you wanna catch up. biggrin.png

    Trond,

Due to Bhuddist Lent this week the school has thursday and friday off so we are back to the farm at Khemarat as of Wednesday arvo. We usually are only in Ubon Sun night to friday arvo. Let us know when you are in town next.

  8. Yesterday while bringing my young bloke home from school I witnessed an accident involving the car in front of me. We had just turned right at the traffic lights on a minor arterial road in Ubon outside the northern end of the airport near the ring road. The pickup in front of me was travelling about 20 - 30 kph when out from the side of the road came a school kid (about 12 yrs old) on a motorbike (no helmut) straight onto the road in front of the pickup. Naturally he didnt look to see if it was clear and ended up being bounced off the front of the pickup and landed with his motorbike on top of him almost wedged under the car on the opposite side of the road which had stopped to wait for the lights to change. I drove past and noticed that he wasnt moving but looked to have no serious injuries. Hopefully he is ok.

I dont know whether they have a deathwish or just think that they are immortal but no matter who they are or whether they are on a bicycle, motorbike or car they dont have any regard for their own safety or anybody elses. I have just finished a couple of road trips around southern and northern Thailand and I have come to the conclusion that the lack of road safety displayed is at its worst in the Issan area and in particular in and around Ubon. I am constantly on guard and have my head spinning constantly to ensure that I am not going to hit somebody.

I try and ensure that I drive as safely as I can but no matter what I do I am constantly seeing many possible dangerous situations everyday.

  9. I posted in another thread, wife attended a Government run SME conference a month or 2 ago.

They were told that although the Government had incentives for industry to move from the south to Issan there was no need for them in Ubon, as it was growing rapidly on it;s own.

Don't think it is just the city, but most of Ubon province for some reason. Even out here, in the no where lands around Buntharik, new business are popping up everywhere, house building and new cars. It will be suburbia in 10 years. Jim

Same, same in Khemarat. New shops, restaurants, cafes etc going up everywhere. Main road through Khemarat is being widened. Every week we come back to the farm there is something new being started

  10. Sezzo, I am sorry if the following is a tad vague, but maybe it can be of use to you, or others may have more information;

On Chayangkun Road, somewhere between Pathumrat Hotel and the traffic lights (Mazda showroom), there is a man said to be very good.

Our daughter-in-law is awaiting retinal surgery in Bangkok soon, and she went to him while she was visiting us here - had a good talk with him and was satisfied with his service.

    Elwood

Thanks for that Elwood, I will go for a wander tomorrow and see what I can find.

  11. I was also looking for a 3 br house to rent earlier this year and they are as rare as rocking horse s**t. We would drive around all the gated communities until we found a sign that said for sale or for rent. We had a few leads through some friends but they werent really suitable or were already rented. We eventually found one for 6k bht per month which is about the norm for a 3 br/2 bath house. We were told about a few 2 story house for about 8k baht per month but they never eventuated.. Its not ideal and the houses are on top of each other with no yard to speak of. We will be looking at finding something to buy in the next 12 months so as to get a bit more land around the actual house.

  12. I had an eye operation in Bangkok to repair a detached retina a couple of years ago while I was on holidays and had regular checkups by an opthamologist in Australia. I am now back living in Ubon and was wondering if anyone could recommend a good eye clinic/opthamologist in Ubon to have a check up with. I am trying to avoid travelling to Bangkok where I had the operation unless I really have to.

    Thanks

  13. Jim,

I have a system at the farm which gives you Australia Network, BBC World and a whole heap of others. I already had an adjustable dish from a previous sat system and the guy just realligned it and tuned in the set top box. Total cost about 1800 baht. Due to where your house is in the village and the surrounding vegetation the problem maybe that to get these channels the dish has to be aligned towards the east and very low on the horizon so you might not be able to get it at your house.

I have a IPM dish do you think the set top box would work with this dish? might be worth me investing 1800 baht to get some more english channel's.

Only thing I can suggest is go see the guys who sell the Thai sat set up and ask them if they can set you up with the sat that gives you Australia Network.. The guys arouond our area understand what that means. You definately wont get anything other than Russia Today on the Thai sat set up. Its a matter of getting the dish aligned to the correct satellite. If you go to the Australia Network website there is an explanation of which satellite you need to tune into.

  15. I agree with Jingthing - He must've sent baht. I regularly send funds to my kasikorn account from Australia and always send it in Aussie dollars and let them convert it to Baht at the Thai end. You get a much better rate. I have an internet account which makes it easy to see what I get on conversion.

Usually I end up with very close to their published TT rate at the time of sending.

Im in the same boat as you using Commonwealth Netbank and I have never had a problem sending into my Bangkok bank account. Hopefully this is a one off glitch for him

    Thanks

  16. The only explanation I can imagine for an extremely low rate is if the sender converted the AUD to Baht in Australia first and send in baht instead of sending in the AUDs to be converted in Thailand. So ask your brother if that's what he did or have him ask the sending bank if that's what they did.

I queried this with him and he said that he definately asked to be sent in AUD. Either way the bank he sent it through were advertising over 31 THB at the time. Ive just been scouring through the Kasikorn bank website looking for anything that might explain the poor exchange rate or fees incurred.

  17. My brother is moving to Thailand shortly and wishes to move some money into his Kasikorn bank account that he opened when he was here on holidays recently. He was unable to open an account at Bangkok bank (where I have an account) but Kasikorn were willing enough to help him out. He transferred a small amount of money whilst back in Australia and left the bankbook for me to see if the transfer worked (always suspicious first time) and to see what exchange rate he got.

To my surprise he got an exchange rate about 2 - 3 baht lower per dollar than I would get at Bangkok bank. I went to the bank with my wife in tow to see why there was such a low exchange rate. The manager was at a loss to tell me why it was so low. I also asked him if he could trace the transaction back through the system to see if a fee has been taken out when the transfer has reached the bank. He told me there is no way to do that. Doubt that very much in these times of high technology.

My question is, does anybody know if Kasikorn charge a fee when money is transfer from overseas into their accounts and if they do, is there a way to avoid this fee.

    Thanks for any help

  18. What do you mean by "officially translated"? The easiest thing to do would be to find an English speaking Thai in your area to do this for you. or do a Google search for the same in your area.

I have never heard of someone having to have their passport translated to Thai. Did you understand the Amphur correctly?

I think you will find that officially translated means that the translation from english to thai has to be verified by official source. In BKK this is usually done at the Dept or Ministry of Foreign Affairs building. Most translation service providers in BKK will arrange all the official verification for you at a cost. Its been a few years since I needed to have this done but I made sure that I kept copies of all the verified translations.

  19. Just renewed my 5 year licence at Ubon on friday and thought I would update the forum on the latest requirements. About 3 weeks ago when I went to do my 90 day reporting I asked for the letter from immigration stating that I live in Ubon on a Non Imm visa. I was informed that they do not give them out anymore but that I had to go to the licence office and get a letter/form from them to request from Immigration verification that I qualify to have a 5 year licence.

I got the form from Licence office and went to Phibun immigration and quickly received the verification from them.

Next day I went to the licence office and gave them the letter with a photocopy of my passport and visa page, as well as my old licence. I then had to sit through the hour long lecture (in thai) and then proceeded back to the desk to pay for the licence. 15 mins later I had the licence in hand.

There was no requirement for medical certificate, no colour perception test, no braking test. I was also informed that the 5 year licence can be renewed up to 3 months before the expiry date. Overall it was a very easy process.

    Hope this helps

  20. Hello,

My brother is on holidays in Thailand at the moment and would like to check out a few areas for potentially retiring to. One of the areas is Hua Hin/Cha-Am. We will be travelling down that way around the 21st May for a few days to check the area out. Could anybody supply us with some basic information for a potential retiree to the area ie. rent for condo/house, facilities/activities in the area, etc. Is there a place or venue where one could have a yarn with someone about these queries.

    Thanks in advance
