Summary -
- Single entry visas automatically changed to double entry
- Re-entry permit, rather than new visa if visiting neighbouring country
- Unlimited visa exempt entries at land borders per calendar yearCabinet nod for tourism measures
THE CABINET yesterday agreed in principle to back measures to stimulate Thailand’s tourism in the early high season.
Tourism and Sports Minister Weerasak Kowsurat said the Cabinet gave the green light for the “Amazing Thailand Grand Sale Passport Privileges” from November 15 until January 15, 2019. The Tourism Authority of Thailand will join the Finance Ministry to set additional special areas at tourism areas or department stores for tourists to facilitate convenient and quick refund of value added tax.Nattaporn Jatusripitak, adviser to the Prime Minister’s Office, said that the Cabinet agreed in principle to review and offer relaxation to three types of visas with a two-month pilot period. The starting period will be determined by the Tourism and Sports Ministry after its study of the proper period and details.
Firstly, a single-entry visa will be allowed to be changed into a double-entry visa with travel required within six months at the same fee of Bt1,000 per person. The Cabinet also approved a re-entry permit to facilitate foreign tourists who visit Thailand’s neighbouring countries to return to Thailand without making another request.
Most foreigners are independent tourists who prefer to take a trip to Thailand’s main destinations and its neighbouring countries such as Laos, Cambodia and Malaysia. The re-entry permit for the rest of the visa will help promote tourism in Thailand and Asean and satisfy this group of foreign tourists.
The Interior Ministry regulation will be amended to allow foreigners who receive a visa waiver for 30 days and travel into Thailand via land immigration checkpoints or land border checkpoints to enter the country with an unlimited number of visa waivers per calendar year.
Based on a database of the Tourism and Sports Ministry, nearly 5 million foreign tourists travelled through land-border checkpoints of Thailand in 2017, up 3 per cent from the previous year.
A number of foreigners stay and work in Thailand’s neighbouring countries.
These foreigners come from Singapore, Japan, France and the United States and like to travel to Thailand for shopping, leisure, sports competitions and healthcare.
These measures aim to maintain Thailand’s tourism revenue at not less than the targeted growth of 12 per cent in 2019, or about Bt2.28 trillion.

I tried to use this app but it would not accept my passport number as a ID.
I went to PEA here in Hun Hin and they said Farang cannot use this app because I do not have a Thai ID.
What is everybody using for Thai ID number?
I went to the PEA counter in Market Village and they set it up for me. They used my Mrs ID number.

British Embassy Bangkok to Stop Certification of Income Letters
From 1 January 2019, the British Embassy Bangkok will no longer be providing British Nationals with letters confirming their income.
This letter has previously served as a supporting document for obtaining a Thai retirement or marriage visa. The British Embassy Bangkok is stopping the certification of income letters because it is unable to fulfil the Thai authorities’ requirements to verify the income of British Nationals.
British Nationals should now demonstrate that they have an amount of at least 800,000 THB in an account in Thailand for no less than three months prior to the visa application, or a monthly income of at least 65,000 THB transferred into an account in Thailand for a retirement visa.
For a marriage visa, the amounts are 400,000 THB in an account in Thailand for no less than three months prior to the visa application, or a monthly income of at least 40,000 THB transferred into an account in Thailand. A bank statement should be used as the supporting document for obtaining a Thai retirement or marriage visa.
All British Nationals concerned should note that the last date for income letter applications is 12 December 2018.
Notes
A) Requirements for a retirement visa:
Must be at least 50 years old;
Must have an amount of at least 800,000 THB in an account in Thailand for no less than three months prior to the application for a visa, or a monthly income of at least 65,000 THB;

B) Requirements for a marriage visa:

Must have an amount of no less than 400,000 THB in an account in Thailand for two months prior to the visa application, or an average annual income of no less than 40,000 THB per month;

In Thailand, ‘Obesity in Our Monks Is a Ticking Time Bomb’
By Muktita SuhartonoBANGKOK — The Buddha, in his laughing incarnation, is often depicted with a jolly smile and a giant, quivering belly. That model of plenitude seems ever more apt in Thailand, where the waistlines of the country’s Buddhist monks have expanded so much that health officials have issued a nationwide warning.
In June, officials from Thailand’s Public Health Department urged laypeople to offer healthier alms to monks, who pour from temples in their saffron robes each morning to roam the streets collecting their meals in the Buddhist tradition.
Amporn Bejapolpitak, the department’s deputy director general, also suggested that monks add more physical activity — like cleaning their temples — to their sedentary lives of prayer and meditation.

Immigration Bureau announce "Permanent Residency application window" for 2018
Image: Phuket News
Foreigners residing in the kingdom have from now until the end of the year to get their permanent residency applications started.
The Immigration Bureau said in a document countersigned by Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha that the window started on September 19th and will last until Friday December 28th.
Decisions on applications will take at least 300 days.
The applications are limited to 100 persons per nationality. Nationalities that have several states that make up their nationality - such as the UK - are counted as one country.
Some 50 stateless people will also be considered.

Thailand has just relaxed its rules on work permits. If these 5 days just involve him attending meetings at a business site then he probably wont need a work permit:
