Someone from Denmark know if the story is true and complete?
In some other not Thailand related cases in Europe, things were often different than they were in the newspaper. (for example criminal charges were not mentioned).
If it is like it seems here, than it is a shame!
it is, they arrived in thailand yesterday
the story forgets to mention one thing though.
according to law Morten Bødskov could with a back rolling effect make suggestions for law change.
meaning he could do something but are doing in effect nothing.
also they had a full year to do anything but nothing happened.
more than this family have been hit by how the law from 2012 was made
This whole thing has turned into a hot political potato and now today Social Democrat Morten Bødskov is ready to roll back the law if he can get the political majority in the parliament.
I'm not sure he would act this way if it's was not because of the fact there is local elections in 6 days here in Denmark.
Trying to fish for some votes , since it seems like the majority of the danish people, think Southida and her 7 year old daughter Im should be allowed to stay in Denmark.
But don't think the Social Democrat Morten Bødskov is doing it because he thinks it's the right thing to do.
Newspaper pressure and the upcoming local elections is more or less the reason why he does it.
He was informed about this case for more than 1 year ago, but has choosen to do nothing until now.
Having said that in some cases the rules should be bend a bit, and this case is one of them in my personal opinion.

As a tourist it's always interesting to see what improvements that has been done since last visit.
Some good some bad.
The roadwork i personally like, and i hope that the traffic accidents down there has dropped because of better roads.
2012 July on the left, 2013 July on the right
Sorry for the not so professional setup
Coming back March 2014 and will be interesting to see what new things that has been done to Samui.
Not that i am a fan of all the new things that has happened.
They closed down my favorite bar on the Island and saw on youtube, that everything has been torn down

Very nice! But the big question is how are they going to turn the water blue and have cute little boats sailing in it? xD

Not sure if it's still there but down at chaweng road, in the alley leading up to the mexican restaurant Gringos cantina, there is a hairdresser, that seems to do a good job
Alley between The islander, burger king and opposite ark bar entrance on chaweng road.
Haven't been paying the hairdresser a visit but having eaten a lot of times at Gringos at our vacations, we have been sitting and watching people going in and out from the hairdresser and
my GF at numeral times commented on the nice haircuts that people had after having their hair cut there.
Maybe worthwhile a looksee if you come across it on a walk on Chaweng road?

It's not only down at Samui the weather is acting strange.
After returning to Denmark i experienced better and hotter weather here, than on our vacation at samui.
31 degress and sunny sky all day long.
That's not our normal summer temperature here
Todays satellite foto.

Before you come and vote NO to something that has nothing to do with you. Have you voted to stop drilling in the north sea by Denmark and the company Maersk oil.
So just because i'm a tourist who only visit Samui maybe 1 or 2 times a year i'm not allowed to worry about Samui and it's future?
And no i didn't vote no to Maersk drilling for oil in the North sa.
I'm born in 1968 and Maersk started drilling for oil in the North sea in 1962.
I just hope that Samui will never experience what Koh Samet had to struggle with the last week.
Is that so wrong?

Been following the news about the oil spill after we returned to Denmark this Sunday and those pictures up at Koh Samet sure does not look nice.
It's also in the local newpapers here in Denmark, which might scare off future tourists.
Hope it's not as bad as it looks and they get things cleared up without to much damage at their corals and marine life, but sounds like the oilspill is bigger than what the company says, when we have a look at the airial pictures.
Hopefully this will never happen to Samui or any other place in the world, but as long as we drill for oil, accidents will always occur once in a while.
Sad that we haven't found a better, cheaper and safer way to power the world.
I noticed several signs this year on Samui, Saying stop oilrig near Samui and vote no.
Hopefully the government will rethink the planned oilrigs in the gulf.
Is there any online website up where we can log onto and vote no?
Or are such polls useless in Thailand, no matter how many votes no?

The average tourist spend a lot more than TBH3000 a day if the calculation is included the flight cost and hotel rate.
Flight cost is insane from Europe with Thai airways and then Bangkok airlines to Samui and back.
Just came home from our 4th vacation in Thailand after 23 days on Samui/Bangkok
and i think if all is included me and my gf spent close to 50,000 Danish kroner which is about TBH 250,000 which is close to TBH 11,000 a day.
I can't see how we could afford to spent a lot more on our vacation.
Unless i get a second job so i can afford more vacations to Thailand

Its for sure the worst weather we have experienced in the 4 vacations we have had on samui.
our Boat trips getting cancelled cause of the weather.
No deep sea fishing atm and so on.
Went to the tour seller yesterday and bought a fishingtrip for tomorrow and he showed me some pictures from chaweng lake after yesterdays windy weather.
Trees were laying on the road in quite a few places.
Hopefully noone got hurt by falling trees or ran into them.
And looking at the weather forecast for tomorrow looks like another cancelled trip.
Never been so white after my first 14 days on samui before lol.

Just a try with panorama function on camera.
Sitting enjoying a drink on your place when bad weather is rolling in from south east. Good weather near koh matlang but not so good at down at the southern part of chaweng. Finished our drink and got home in time before it poored down :-)

Thanks for the replies.
Size does not always matter.
It's more of a form of meditation for me sitting and relaxing, while drinking a cold beer or two
Though i plan to take one of the longer trips with Mr Tu, to see if i can get lucky and catch something that is bigger than the normal aquarium fish.
Cheers all.
Why Mr Tu ? because he advertises i suppose. There are others you know, and probably cheaper.
Been a few times with Mr Tu, and yes i found out about him, cause i found his brochures down at the kind tour salesman on the corner near Samui Natien resort.
But i'm willing to try another fishingboat if you can recommend one

Ohh yeah i forgot to mention i was thinking about fishing in the sea.
We're gonna live in the somewhat northern end of Chaweng on our usual hotel outside the two small reefislands and not to far from Koh matlang.
Thought about maybe fishing from the rocks on the opposite site of Koh matlang, if that is legit, so i do not interfeer with any swimmers, snorklers etc

Hello all.
It's Time for another 3 weeks vacation on Samui and arriving in a week
I enjoy fishing and have been on a few tours with Mr Tu on a boattrip and caught the usual aquarium sized fish, but have also noticed some locals fishing from the rocks on various sites on the island, while passing them on Mr Tu boattrip and on a trip down to Koh Tan.
So i would like to know if it's legal to bring my own fishing gear and try to catch some fish if i find some interesting spots to fish from.
Or does it need some sort of fishing license like in other European countries.
If not i guess i will hop on Mr Tu's boat again or maybe try the Top cats lake this time.
If it's allowed is there any fellow anglers who have a few tips for what kind of lure/bait is normally used or is squid the all around bait?
Thought about bringing some floats, spinners, Gulp sandworms, gulp crabs, Various flies, some smaller casting lures ranging from 25-100 grams.
But does those things work on Samui fish, or is it just as good just buying some squid at the local market.
Thanks in advance

Hello all.
I hope it's ok to squeeze in a question.
Sitting here in Denmark and planning our next trip to Samui this July and came across a picture by somaSamui,
and wonder if they closed down some of the small cozy thairestaurants at Chaweng food center on lake road.
We have been to Mitra and Stonefish which were great, and this year wanted to try some of the others located there, since they
all looked very nice, but it looks like there has been some construction work in that area.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/kohsamui/8390975165/in/photostream
Anyone know if Mitra, Stonefish and some of the other restaurants near those two are still there, or has been closed down and if so, what are they building in that area?
Thanks in advance and can't wait to get back....

Not sure how famous Medina is outside Denmark, but she visited Samui and stayed at Kamalya resort and spa last year.
Medina has been one of the most popular singers here in DK for a few years now.
Normally she sings in danish vocal but maybe these ones in english is known outside Denmark?

You said that you wanted western/thai music, so not sure this suits you, but when we visited Samui in July, Samui Rock Cafe down at Chaweng food market on lake road, each sunday has live music from 8 or 9 pm.
It's a Thaiband called The Black Roses that play cover numbers and it's mainly rock music, but also do numbers by request if they know them.
Their lead guitarist is pretty darn good and the atmosphere at the cafe is great.
Maybe worth a visit?

3. Why do all Italian tourists feel it necessary to start clapping as soon as the aircraft has landed? On a little ATR
it can be disturbing but I guess that on a charter 747 the noise would be unimagineable.
Never thought about clapping after landing would be pointed towards a specific country.
We used to do it a lot here in scandinavia.
In general it seems like it's travellers 40+ that still claps after landing.
I remember when i was a kid, almost the whole plane would clap after landing on let's say Mallorca or ibiza, and so did i
Why?
No idea.
But here it's normally only on long flights that clapping happens.
On domestic flights i never heard anyone clap after landing, so maybe it's more frequent at charter flights?
Can't see what the fuzz is about anyway.
People are happy to land safely on their destination and so they want to share their happiness by clapping.
It could be aimed towards the pilots and crew for their good work?
Could be the booze clapping?
Could be nervous passengers clapping cause they still are alive?
Could be people just beeing happy to arrive at their dream destination fullfilled with hope?
It's not like clappers are going to ruin your holiday, so share their happiness and enjoy your safe landings where ever you might end up in your future.

Sad how a day out in town can turn tragic so fast.
Tragic for those who died and for their families and friends but also tragic for those burn victims that survived and now has to struggle through
painful recoveries.
Best wishes to all of the victims and their families.
Sad just sad....

Great shots Virt, glad you did not name all the secret quiet beaches.... the only shot that is a bit out of focus, is the one at the Green Mango, did the camera have too much to drink???
That was actually on purpose.
Since it's a buzy electrified place for the youngsters i tried to get the "boxes on the powerlines" in focus.

Here is a few of the pictures i shot during the 3 weeks.
Just shot on a compact panasonic so nothing fancy.
Got a nasty scratch on my lens and some dust on the sensor, so that's why there are spots, blurred areas.
Got to get a new camera for next years vacation.
Have tons of full hd 1080p videos from all the places we been to, but that have to wait until i got time to edit some footage.
We miss Samui so much......... -
Maybe some of you guys should settle it at some of the shooting ranges across this island :-)
Thought about going there for the last three trips but never tried one of those places so far.
As for carrying a weapon here is my oppinion.
You can kill but you need to catch me first :-)
Im one of those guys who loves to drink, but i never fight, and if i end up in a corner i can normally talk myself out of it.
Life is precious and everyone should appreciate it.

@Big C.
We decided not to go to that view point and instead just stopped at various places already mentioned. Also stopped at a place on the road where they had a zillion coconuts laying around. Bought some oil from there and took some pictures. never seen so many coconuts on one place before :-)
Going to bother you all with some pictures when i get home and get time to edit things :-)
Gourgeous beaches on this island and amazing how empty some of them are.
Can imagine that was how Chaweng looked like twenty years ago.

The Danish Parliament have just voted yes to a new law change, so the 7 year old girl and her mother can return to Denmark.
Good for the girl and her mother, but this should have been settled a long time ago, and not just now because of the public press and upcoming local elections.
