Influx of Chinese tourists set to boost hotel earnings in 2024
impulse replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
Beijing records longest cold wave in modern history https://edition.cnn.com/2023/12/24/asia/beijing-cold-weather-china-intl/index.html Nuff said... -
No, but in 65+ years of living on the planet, I've dealt with hundreds of branches of chain stores and franchises, often with very different results from one location to another. Sometimes different even with the same branch depending on who's working that day and how they're feeling. I believe that mentioning the specific location would have been useful information. Seems the OP did, too- given that he did come back and mentioned the specific branch. Which I appreciate.

Do 90 reporting or not
impulse replied to Petchou's topic in Thai Visas, Residency, and Work Permits
Good catch. The stamp was blue, not red. For some reason, I was thinking about a Scarlet Letter. I think this is it... It's the only random stamp in my old passport mentioning 2000 and 90. I assume it's the 2000 baht fine I paid for a late 90 day report, though I don't read Thai. -

Good luck getting prescriptions filled at a US pharmacy. I like the concept, but I suspect the devil will be in the delivery... -
Do 90 reporting or not
impulse replied to Petchou's topic in Thai Visas, Residency, and Work Permits
About 10 years ago, I renewed my WP and permission to stay at the One Stop in BKK. Thinking all was good, I didn't do a concurrent 90 day report (and my company's visa fairies didn't tell me to). I ended up paying a 2000 baht fine along with a red stamp in my passport. I don't know if the rules have changed, but I'd suggest erring on the side of caution. Edit: BTW, I never did a 90 day report myself (other than that one) The company visa fairies collected my passport every 3 months and took care of it. That time, I had to be there in person. -
Next week's thread title: Family flies to Thailand to bail out foreigner sitting in Thai hospital looking at multi million baht bill because he had no license and consequently, no insurance. It's easy to find a rental bike, with or without a license. But they don't disclose the small print. And it'll probably be somewhere on page 42 of your travel policy. No coverage.

Dow hits all-time high, closing above 37,000 for first time
impulse replied to CharlieH's topic in World News
I find it hard to believe that any wide index of stock values has grown faster than the monthly cost of financing a house, given the price inflation and interest rate increases. -

How many shares of stock does it cost today to buy a house, or even a hamburger? Simple answer: More than it did in January, 2021. -

She got 5 years for speaking into a megaphone. These guys got $500 fines, community service and probation for actually burning down a Wendy's during the Summer of Love. Double standard of justice much? https://apnews.com/article/rayshard-brooks-wendys-arson-guilty-pleas-d3656cb469b4ca4d0e292221e9483584 -
Ukraine military seeks extra 500,000 soldiers - President Zelensky

It's RT, so I take it with a BIG grain of salt: https://www.rt.com/russia/589656-ukraine-draft-dodgers-europe/ Ukraine may punish draft dodgers who are hiding from mobilization abroad by denying them consular and banking services, MP Vadim Ivchenko told the news outlet Strana.ua on Monday. -
They appear to be in BKK! Check here branches/service points of KT OPTIC optics One could hope that the service will be equally stellar across all the branches But I doubt it.

Park Defends Entrance Fee For Visiting ‘Wild Boars’ Cave
impulse replied to webfact's topic in Chiang Rai News
Yellowstone, no. It's federal. But Wyoming state parks charge less if your car has Wyoming plates. Something about already supporting the park by paying taxes in the state. And, I suspect, a little bit of what the market will bear. Tourists will pay more. -
2 orders a week may sound like a lot, and maybe it is. But it sure didn't feel like it. Keep in mind that includes food, like barbecue sauce, A1 sauce, sweet pickle relish, popping corn and other import items the local Foodland often ran out of. Just those 4 items would be 3-4 orders a month, and I started ordering them online the 2nd or 3rd time I couldn't find them on the shelf at the supermarket- occasionally for months at a time. In fact, I remember a few TVF threads that started when one of the popular items got restocked at a local grocery store. It was a whole lot easier to order from Lazada than to cross my fingers and hope there was stock at Foodland this week.

I have enough to help him
impulse replied to Puppa's topic in Thai Visas, Residency, and Work Permits
The big issue is whether the guy has to travel to his embassy, exposing himself to the risk of getting caught. Plus the expenses involved and trying to find a hotel without travel documents upon check- in. -
I have enough to help him
impulse replied to Puppa's topic in Thai Visas, Residency, and Work Permits
I get that. But he's been in Thailand long enough to remember when a 20k fine upon leaving allowed an overstayer to come back in the very next day. I think the guy made a big mistake, but he's not affecting the quality of my life one iota. So I wish him well. Probably hundreds of guys just like him, living quietly under the radar and not harming anyone, really. Just got caught up in a rule change.- 84 replies

Xi warned Biden that China WILL reunify with Taiwan in blunt message

Remind me... How much territory did Putin take with Obama at the wheel? How much (so far) with Biden? And how much did Putin take under the bad orange man? -

They'd have probably made it to Texas or Arizona if only Indians voted blue...

2 a week for a year is 104 orders. Do that for a few years and it adds up. I freely admit to quite a few impulse buys, but mostly I saved myself hours of traipsing around the malls searching for eclectic stuff. I did try out a couple of hobbies that I otherwise wouldn't have, photography (and video) being the biggest cash drain what with lenses and filters, etc. But I'm glad I did. BTW, I'm certainly not claiming there are no problems, just that I found them to be very rare. I also visited Lazada HQ near Emporium when I helped a few of my workmates get set up to sell online. Well worth a visit, but my employment contract did not allow me to be an active participant. I was just helping some local co-workers when it became clear the company would close up shop in a few years.

Biden says there's 'no question' Trump engaged in an insurrection
impulse replied to CharlieH's topic in World News
You mean the military leadership that can't even come close to their recruiting goals, are demanding tampon dispensers in the men's bathrooms, and keep losing track of $ trillions of assets and money? Edit: As I recall, ISIS got pretty quiet under Trump's watch and Russia took the Crimea under Obama and the Donbas under Biden. Crickets from them under the bad orange man. -

Trump's legal defeat in Colorado may turn into political gold
impulse replied to CharlieH's topic in World News
I'm just pointing out the double standard. If you believe that Jan 6 was an insurrection, you either believe the Summer of Love coming to the White House gates was an assassination attempt, or you're demonstrating a TDS double standard. Of course I read it. I specifically chose it to demonstrate the media covering for Kackling Kamala and the rest of the lefties, while ignoring Trump's admonition to demonstrate peacefully and patriotically. In fact, he did it on the day. In advance. Kamala didn't walk back her statement(s) for months.
