  1. The square headed one once told the phone companies to disable all SIMs that weren't registered - something to do with them being used to detonate bombs in the South.

But I think someone pointed out to him what a colossal waste of time it was, and they don't enforce it now. I bought a couple of 1-2-Call SIMs last year and I've never been asked for any identity information.

They probably want your info to spam you.

I believe every SIM needs to be registered in the four troubled southern provinces or service is denied.

Back in 2006 everyone did have to register their SIM or risk losing service.

Registering a SIM does have some advantages: makes replacement easier in the case of loss or theft, makes MNP easier, typically allows for increased self-account management.

The NBTC is still pushing operators hard to register all SIMs - and fining them for not doing so. Maybe the "carrot" will be increased validity?

my AIS sim was disabled one day and just showing a letter R (restricted i presumed ) where the 3g or h+ usually was and no bars of call signal either

i went into 12call shop and told them my sim is not working ,straight away without even checking it she started opening a brand new sim package

and gave me a form to fill out with my personal info

asked me for ID and i told her i have not any so they just accepted the name i wrote down was correct but i could have wrote anything

seems like they do deactivate sim cards sometimes in an attempt to get everyones details

On many phones a "R" in the display indicates Roaming, which is possible on AIS/One-2-Call as they have a roaming agreement with TOT. Additionally, "SIM exhaustion" can lead to issues with connectivity; I had to replace an old (~ 7 years) AIS/One-2-Call SIM due to this problem.

I have not heard of any operator disabling SIMs in an effort to get users to register, but maybe they have their eye on you?

possibly you are right and big brother is watching me :D ,also another rumour i heard was that old sims are being scrapped because they cant support new speeds of 3G and possibly 4g which maybe you can connect to if you live in siam paragon :)

  2. "so starting with a project may be my best option, getting it right and then touring and tinkering." Ok, I can see that point of view. But how about a brand new CBR250 with top box and panniers for touring all over Thailand, Laos and Cambodia then in a few years, when it's starting to look seedy, make that you project bike. There's a ton of bits already available.

god knows how long honda will keep pumping out these current cbr250rs without any major re-design

or how many millions of them will be sold

it could be a very long time before a 2013 cbr250 is an old " classic "

it will be light years cheaper in maintainance and fuel costs than a ~ 20 year old cb400 or a yamaha sr400

but i think the character is just not comparable

todays bikes are built with economy and quietness and fuel efficiency and as much as possible from moulded plastic

just doesnt compare to a bike designed ~20 yrs ago when the design brief was differnt ,emmisions or noise regulations were unheard off and gas was

    cheap as <deleted> ...smile.png

  3. post-140969-13598543029958_thumb.jpg

Still have one of these right next to my house. I walked by it last night and it was lite up like a Christmas tree. Everything looks like its working in order. The benzine gets very great performance but it is also very expensive. I think it's almost 50 baht a liter.

Your comic fairing stands out nice in that pic.

Was your other pic in black & white?

No this is just an old picture. The bike is blue now.

this comic effect would be very eye catching if you had used topshelf magazines such as playboy ,hustler etc

imagine the looks on the faces of thai motorists when your stopped at the traffic lights .........whistling.gif

    priceless ! :D

  4. That's interesting. I'm not in Bkk unfortunately, but down south. Thanks for the IRC info. Yesterday I saw the IRCs on a Suzuki Shogun 125R in the local showroom and they looked the part, although to fit them on my smash would require new rims, anyway your info is very timely, thanks. The last thing I want is poor performance in the wet.

I'm still trying to source tyres other than the local no-name brands. Michelin would be perfect if I can source them. There are loads of car tyre dealers selling known brands, but tyres for scooters all seem to be sold by small scooter repair shops aiming at the lowest possible cost for brands I'm unfamiliar with like Dream -11, or Street Star.

if you need specific brand tyres , a car tyre dealer selling that brand can normally order them if you dont mind waiting a couple of days

and of course paying for them upfront

  5. Yip, you don't like ITMan having fun on a new scooter? People are buying and hyping new Honda monkey bikes here. Why not buy a ZoomerX then? But good you told us rolleyes.gif

If you could read i wrote i would like to buy one if it was a bit more suited to my size and i was surprised someone even taller than me can use it

i have no problems with the bikes anyone chooses and we all buy whatever for differnt reasons

if i recall correctly , were you not the one recently discussing bikes like the KSR 110cc and the (lack of) manliness of the folks who ride them with jonnyR whistling.gif

coming from someone who rides a cbr150 ? thats surely a real mans bike if ever any manufacturer made one cheesy.gif

live and let live bro,i promise not to critique your manly cbr150 again laugh.png and you can get back to advising people on chinese bikes even though you

havent got the stones to buy one yourself coffee1.gif

  6. I'm quite sure you have to go to a DTAC shop and present your passport. It was made law a few years ago that everybody must register their sim. At the time they would disable your sim if you did not register it within a certain timeframe but I don't know if they still do that.

Why don't you call their helpdesk and ask? The number is 1678 from your mobile. They are normally very helpful and speak excellent English.

  7. Well I bought one one 2 days ago and thought the thread needed ung. Here's a quick review...

I am 1.88 meters and 95kg. The Zoomer-X's 110cc engine can cope getting me through traffic, mainly because it is 10KGs shy of the Click. The exhaust note is oddly quiet in low revs but definately louder than most new mopeds when revved hard. The underseat storage needs the (980 baht) plastic 'waterproof' box to be of any use at all, as the document holder is tiny...and also no good at storing anything as it is not watertight.

Looks wise the Zoomer-X is streets ahead of the other mopeds out there, I showed a friend a (front on) pic of it and they thought it was a large sports bike! The upsidedown gold forks make it look great, as does the car-sized headleamp. I got the combi-brake version (all-black) as I think it was worth the extra 3K - total on the road price, 1years insurance 55500K I would say that I was tempted by the Click 125 Idle Stop, but it's nice to have something different on the road and it does get a few remarks at the many traffic light stops.

Extras - well there are just loads of them to choose from already! See HERE

Overall I would say I am very happy with the handling, looks and 'fun' element. The underseat storage could have been a bit more inventive with changeable walls to stop your shopping falling out. They do have bungee hooks, but that's about it. The fuel tank cover is also below Honda's normal standards and needs a bit of quality added to it. These are minor niggles really as I have certainly enjoyed the first 150KMS anyway! I hope this helps, sorry no pics as my internet connection is definately 'Phuket'!

I'm only 183cm and when I sat on the Zoomer and turned the handlebars they smacked me on the kneecap

If I were to ride one I'd have to sit way back on the passenger seat to get around tight corners

I don't know how you can be in a comfortable riding position at 188cm on a bike that size but comfort is subjective

It looks very cool though and they seem to be selling shitloads of em around BKK so if I were smaller I'd get one or an msx

Honda has whipped kawasaki this year imo in Thai offerings

The 2013 Ninja 250 +naked is nice but the thai price is too close to hondas 500's to buy a 250

    40k difference between a kawa 250 or a honda 500cc I would take the 500 without a second thought

Kawasaki versys now 313k and CB500X at 215k in a budget conscious country like thailand, honda is a winner for sure, versys has a shitload more power though so maybe worth the extra money for fun, tougher decision :)

Sym/kymco will suffer hard on 300/400i if honda release a Thai made 300cc maxi scooter for cheaper

Thais love all things honda and hondas finally seen the potential here so I think everyone else will be playing catch up for this year at least

Hopefully kawasaki will notice and and start making affordable new bikes here but honda strategy has thailand nailed with these new fuel efficient engines and low cost bikes

Everything else imported is probably much too expensive for the average Thai salary so the other brands aren't going to rack up much sales in comparison.

  8. I think there is no official comsumer protection here as far as 3g billing is concerned

i am on the AIS 799thb unlimited package and according to my phone my actual 3g date usage is very low

(because im nearly always connected to fast wifi at homw or work etc )

the phone companies always estimate it to be much higher although it doest afffect me as im already on their

unlimited package but for people buying it buy the MB its a complete rip off if they say youve used hundreds of MB

and your phone and third party apps mesure the data at a small fraction of however corrupt way the networks measure it rolleyes.gif

  9. I've seen some used ER-6's for sale that aren't too far from 100K and that would be a great bike for the OP's needs. Lots of them out there so you just have to keep searching until a motivated seller shows up.

I've been lusting over the soon-to-arrive Honda 500X. That should be a great bike for Thailand.

you wont get an er6n now if the budget is 100k

especially since the new tax hiked them up 10%

a brand new cbr 250 is only around 100k and second hand ones are 70k upwards depending on condition

so if the budget is 100k i would just buy that

i think the 500x looks like an interesting bike but im a bit worried it may be underpowered/slow as a dead dog compared to the versys

if i dont like it ,you will see it for sale in classifieds :)

  10. even worse if you buy a new versys for 310,000thb

if it goes missing the next day the max payout is 180k minus 5k deductable so 175k towards your replacement bike sad.png

i dont know how they can call that 1st class insurance but they can smile.png

I forgot about the price hike with this new tax, lucky for me the resale has gone up a little on my bike, as I bought my 2012 model in Dec 2011..... (wishful thinking) :D

I honestly wouldn't mind paying and extra 5-10k if the full value of the bike was covered, but it's hard to find a company that will do so, or even get close :(

I had one company offer me cover upto 400,000baht for 24,000Baht per year. Hmmmmm ‘upto’ hmmmmmmmmmm!! Does that mean I will get what the insurance company thinks it’s worth or the full 400,000baht? If should have gone for that policy, as I could make a profit if I crash the bike….. lol

If you could prove you had modified your bike with expensive parts up to the agreed value they might pay it out on a theft

Probably they would want to see receipts for every Baht right up to the total 400k and maybe take a bit off for depreciation :)

  11. With Black Panda and Briggsy, it seems I'm not the only one then who's having to change the chain and sprockets around 12,000kms. If the 250s last 40Kms seems like the 150s got a bum deal in this respect.

Which brings me back to my first point of why spend lots of money on lube when you have to change the the whole thing after just a few months?

because if a chain snaps in traffic it could cost you your life .......

not to mention it could saw through your leg like a chainsaw...(expensive )

or smash the engine case and gearbox to bits (expensive )

    bottle of oil (cheap )

I didn't say not oil it. If the chain life is only about 15,000kms then surely the oil they use at the honda dealers is sufficient? (as long as it is applied regularly)

honda service interval is every 6000km if i recall

chain should be checked and oiled every 400-500km in dry weather

(more often in rainy weather or after a visit to the carwash etc )

waiting until every honda service is neglecting it

  12. They have been claiming that for just over a year now.

I'm sure that the bike had a power commander and obviously a lengthy tune.

7.5bhp is a bit optimistic for an ER6, even a full system, i'd like to see an independent dyno test with this exhaust system.

Two Brothers are the only company claiming such high gains....

10-11% more HP from an exhaust change sounds a bit much ,i would also like to see it tested by someone else who isnt selling it :)

  13. Just came back from the bike fest and booked me a CB500F.

Will be available end of April. I was number 17 on the list and after I asked, she confirmed it was a mixed list, I don't know if it was mixed of only the 500 models or all the bikes Honda is selling there.

But 17 sales after 9 hours of opening ain't that much. I think there are a lot of tire kickers there.

You must have been at a different motor show than me

I was there at 1.30pm yesterday and they had sold 83. CB500X

By the time I had completed my order 20 min later they were on 97 and I paid deposit on another one for a friend who was at work yesterday so we got the 83rd and 97th ones and they're was a line of thais standing waiting to order them as I was leaving

Build quality looks excellent but I'm sure the ones on display had many more hours of preparation just for the motorshow

    Apparently.

All I know is, I had number 17 at 7 in the evening and delivery will be end of April. That's all that matters to me actually :-)

i have estimated delivery date of 31st march so they must be already selling the next batch :)

  14. With Black Panda and Briggsy, it seems I'm not the only one then who's having to change the chain and sprockets around 12,000kms. If the 250s last 40Kms seems like the 150s got a bum deal in this respect.

  16. Looks good!

it does look cool ,not as cool as a t-max but still would make a great machine for touring thailand

its too big for bkk's gridlock etc and for touring i would prefer my versys with givi boxes but this kind of bike

will still appeal to a lot of people if it comes at the right price and i love to see new bikes coming on the thai

market whether they are my style or not :)

Yeah, it is not a t max or goldwing but cool enough for thailand. You can go anywhere with it in Thailand and at the city, it should be fine.

I am happy to see options in Thailand too. I might do a party scoot with it, let me try to convince myself a bit:lol:

If you think the t-max is cool, you should see the new BMW 650 scooter

It is my dream scooter since I saw it yesterday at motor show :)

  17. i use chain wax as shown below ,not the cheapest at 600+ thb for a big can but i spray it on top of the original manufacturers lubrication that comes on 0-ring chains and that gives me some peace of mind that my chain is lubricated and rain will not wash off the wax coating so easily like it does to thin oils such as transmission oil that many people including some bike manufacturers recommend

    https://www.google.c...4Do_PrQeaq4G4DA

ps : dont allow anyone to blast your chain with a high pressure washer such as most car washes use ,a bikes drive chain and electricals is not protected as well as a car so pressure not much stronger than a garden hose is a good idea when washing
