  1. The inventor of the Harley-Davidson motorcycle, Arthur Davidson, died and went to heaven. At the gates, St. Peter told Arthur, "Since your motorcycles have changed the world, your reward is, you can hang out with anyone you want in Heaven."

Arthur thought about it for a minute and then said, "I want to hang out with God."

St. Peter took Arthur to the Throne Room, and introduced him to God. God recognized Arthur and commented, "Okay, so you were the one who invented motorcycles, eh?!"

    Arthur said, "Yeah, that's me...."

God commented: "Well, what's the big deal in inventing something that's pretty unstable, makes noise and pollution, and can't run without a road?!"

Arthur was apparently embarrassed, but finally spoke, "Excuse me, but aren't you the inventor of woman???"

    God said, "Ah, yes."

"Well," said Arthur, "professional to professional, you have some major design flaws in your invention:

    1. There's too much inconsistency in the front-end protrusion;

    2. It chatters constantly at high speeds;

    3. Most of the rear ends are too soft and wobble too much;

    4. The intake is placed way too close to the exhaust;

    5. And the maintenance costs are outrageous!!"

"Hmmmm, you may have some good points there," replied God, "hold on."

God went to his celestial super-computer, typed in a few words and waited for the results. The computer then printed out a slip of paper.

"Well, it may be true that my invention is flawed," God said to Arthur,

"but according to these numbers, more men are riding my invention than yours".

  2. Most if not all pregnancy tests check the HCG level in the blood or urine. In the earliest stages of pregnancy the level of HCG (Human chorionic gonadotropin)will double every two to three days.

If your girlfriend is pregnant then her HCG level will change quite considerable even in the 8 days that you have left. So keep trying the test and if you have a choice get the most sensitive one available.

    Wishing you a Merry Christmas

  3. Yes the dual shot is easily found throughout Thailand. If you have already had the A vacine then chances are you will only need a booster, so one dual vacine (good for a further 10 years) and two additional B shots (After one month and six months) and then you will be good for 10 years for both Hep A & B.

I'm not sure of the cost but it is relatively cheap and certainly worth getting.

Don't worry too much about the article above. If I had a child in continental America I don't think I would bother getting her vacinated either, but here in Thailand the risks, especially for Hep A are considerably higher for both children and Adults.

You may have to wait 30 minutes to get the vacine as it can be a bit painful if given straight from the fridge.

  4. Couldn't connect to the site expekt.com (Blocked) So that's that theory out of the door. Why some proxies last longer than others I really can't say but don't think the problem is Thailand.

Found you a few more proxies (including Sweden) have a look:

Sorry it doesn't work for you, the reason seems to be your internet provider. If I click on the above link (http://[email protected]/proxy) with my True connection I get straight through, (I can also access www.sportsbetting.com), but when I try the same links with a CSloxinfo dialup connection I get the same as you, (Page not available).

  6. Over-staying your visa is NEVER a good idea.

Whilst you will have no problem leaving the country, they do stamp your passport to show that a fine has been paid. If you apply for another visa this can cause problems.

More serious is if something happens during the overstay period. Then you are off to immigration court. For Baht 1900 why take the risk. For Baht 2000 you can have a day trip to the casino's and an extra 30 days.

  7. Hi Dancali

Your understanding of how a computer handles data is basically correct, and yes increasing the amount of RAM could solve some of your problems. However before you go to the time and expense of going that route, it's always worthwhile looking at other options. Too often people go for the complicated (and usually expensive) options before looking at the simple (and usually free) ones.

Before you do anything you should find out what is running at start-up on your computer, and then stop them. You will normally get a good idea by how many icons you have in your task bar and how long it takes for the computer to boot up, then ask the question, "Do I really need that program running all the time"

Software writers ALL think that their programs are indispensable and set as default that they run on start-up. It doesn't take long for your computer to slow down to a trickle.

What is called "Good House-keeping" can have a major impact on how a system functions

  8. 1. Yes you can run two or more browsers at once, and each one has the choice of running through a proxy or not, and yes you can use a different proxy for each browser. In Opera you have the additional option of being able to specify certain sites which you don't want a proxy for.

Eudora isn't a web browser, it's an email program like Outlook. The main web browsers are:

    Internet Explorer

    Netscape

    Opera

    Firefox (mozilla)

There are others but these are the four main ones for windows based machines. The full version of Opera isn't free (although there is a free version with ads), Firefox is free and can be downloaded from:

    http://www.mozilla.org/

  9. Yes you can use as many browsers as you like, although most Banking sites require Internet Explorer be used , they say for security reasons !!!

For general browsing get a copy of either Firefox or Opera

Probably not a good idea to use a proxy when visiting a secure site unless you do a whois to find out who actually owns the proxy server. Most proxies are college's, medium and large companies, ngo's or government departments.

There is no telling how long a proxy will work for, sometimes hours sometimes months. Some of the bigger web pages are updated regularly some weekly some occasionally. The better ones give lists according to speed, country or whether they are anonymous or not.

    Have fun...

  10. I think you are getting confused by the word "Descent"

If you go to the link for BN4 shown earlier and look at section 7 you will see that If you are a British citizen other than by descent you will automatically transfer the citizenship on to your child. What this means is that if you were born in the uk to British parents your children are automatically given British citizenship, but your children will be classed as British Citizens by Descent (If born in Thailand), and maynot be able to pass the citizenship on to THEIR children.

    Two other things to remember:

    1. If you marry in Thailand and then apply for a settlement visa, the British Embassy normally wants you to wait 3 months (Cooling Off period), before a visa will be granted. I am sure there are exceptions but that is thegeneral rule of thumb. So maybe applying for a fiance visa would be a better bet.

    2. British Passport: Whilst your child will be allowed a British passport, if they use it to come into Thailand they will require a visa just like you. So if your child is born in Thailand and you take the child outside for a holiday etc, make sure the child has a Thai passport. For children under 18, there is no problem having both passports.

Forgot to say; Congratulations, hope everything works out for you

  11. The question is quite simple; Should smoking be banned in the Pubs and Bars of Thailand ?

    My answer is NO.

    Here is the reason:

Ever since the first world war (when they were called coffin nails) people have realised that there are dangers associated with smoking. Many studies have been carried out and published, and for the past thirty or so years Governments around the world have rightly informed their people of these dangers.

Restrictions have rightly been put in place regarding advertising and the selling of tobacco products to children, and Governments have rightly (in my opinion) forced the tobacco companies to put health warnings on their products. In recent years there has emerged fears that second hand smoke may cause serious health problems for non smokers, and the Governments around the world (Thailand included) have rightly made sure that the people are informed of these dangers. Many Governments have started and continue to offer help to those people who wish to stop smoking. As a result of all this, there can be few people within Thailand (or any other country for that matter) who do not understand the probable dangers associated with tobacco products both directly and indirectly.

Figures vary from country to country but on average anywhere from 65% - 80% of people do not smoke.Thailand estimates that appoximately 25% of it's adult population are smokers, meaning that 75% do not smoke.

So we have a product which is adictive, which can cause health problems for those who use it and can cause possible health problems for those who are in close proximaty to people who do use it.

Anti-smoking advocates both within and outside of Governments have been relentless in getting through legislature to protect the majority of people from these dangers. One country (Bhutan) has banned smoking. Both Canada and Ireland have banned smoking in Public places, likewise so have the states of New York and California. The U.K Government is bringing out tough new anti-smoking legislature, although many anti-smoking advocates are up in arms that the new laws will not be tough enough.

All of this begs the question of why I am in favour of allowing smoking in the Pubs and Bars of Thailand ?

Freedom of Choice... In Thailand there are literarally hundreds of thousands of Pubs, Bars and Restraunts, the vast majority of which are owned by individuals, families or small groups of partners. They have the freedom to chose what type of Pub,Bar or Restraunt they want there establishment to be, hence there are bars catering to the masses, others cater to particular groups ranging from Sports enthusiasts to Elvis worshippers. There are Pubs and Bars catering to every known sexual orientation, ethnic group, age group and political persuasion. There are Pubs and Bars for singles, couples and families. Why is it that there are no bars catering to the non-smokers ? In theory there should be tens of thousands, and with them the question of banning smoking would be a non issue. Why is it that the Anti-Smoking advocates who represent 75% of the people have been so completely unsuccessful in establishing a single Pub or Bar to cater for them (Other than by law) ? Because it is the peoples choice... Don't ask me why !

  12. If you are unfamiliar to using proxies try this for the short term:

    http://wheel.compose.cs.cmu.edu:8001/cgi-bin/browse/objweb

Just enter in your desired web site where it says "Convert a URL"

Alternatively you could try going to Yahoo, google etc and connecting through them. Google will give you a large number of sites offering proxy numbers, and how to enter them into your browser. On a browser like Opera, it takes just a few seconds to set up and copy and paste a proxy in. I don't use proxies here in Thailand but other places I visit they ban newspapers and the bbc so it is easy to get round, sometimes have to try a few before I get a good connection though.

  13. Any comments on my theories?

As one who used to have some abilities with Spanish (French and Italian are similar), and have horsed around with or been around a bit with Romanian, German and a few others, and am now studying Thai pretty seriously, I had a few comments:

    - I don't see one any one language as particularly harder or easier than the other. They each have characteristics that make them somewhat difficult and also somewhat easier than other languages. The primary difficulty is being open to trying to learn something new, and approaching the new language without any predispositions based on knowledge of other languages. Once I was able to make this step, my approach to learning Thai started to come easier.

    - The western languages (e.g., English, French, Spanish, etc.) all have many different dipthongs, tenses, etc., that have to be learned. Italian and Romanian languages are also very close, linked a bit by Latin. This makes them difficult in that there is a lot to learn. On the other hand, it makes them easier to learn one once you have learned another. For example, Spanish and Italian are very close.

    - Thai may be a bit difficult initially because of having to learn a whole new character set for letters, numbers and punctuation, and having to learn a larger alphabet and tone rules. On the other hand, it seems like there are very few rules to learn for tenses, and the sentence structure is very simple. In other words, while it takes a bit of time and effort to master a few basics, once those basics are grasped, one can have a pretty decent working vocabulary in a very short time.

    Agree? Disagree? Other thoughts?

I have to admit to having only a basic knowledge of Thai. But two comments:

Firstly regarding tones. When people I meet say they can't hear the different tones I normally give this example; "Close" This can be said with two very different tones, with two very different meanings.

"You are close enough to close the door"

    It gets people thinking...

Secondly the Thai alphabet: When people say there are too many characters to learn I point out that when you compare the Thai alphabet and the English alphabet (Upper and Lower case) it's comparable.

    Just a thought...

  14. No you're not wrong.

We should also clarify that wearing a condom is obviously a safer option...I assumed it goes without saying.

I think the problem the problem with HIV generally is that there are too many people that don't know enough about it.

One thing I do know about HIV / AIDS is that I have to live with it every day. But at least today my chance of infecting those that I love has been reduced to virtually zero. Having AIDS is something I have come to accept, Giving it to someone else is something I couldn"t.

One word of advise to anyone who thinks they might even possibly be infected; Get tested.
