  1. If she hired while overseas, the school can supply her with the necessary papers to get the non-immigrant visa. If she comes here and finds a job, then she will (USUALLY) get the paperwork and then travel to a nearby country to get the non-immigrant visa.

Except for the top tier international schools, not a lot of overseas hiring goes on.

Pray tell: What are some of the "top tier international schools"? Also, if applying within Thailand for an International School, could one expect the 80K - 100K Thai baht salary (per month?)?

    Please clarify. Thanks.

  2. The Op probably thinks that $1500 is a fortune in LOS, not these days my friend, those days are well over!!! You'll be luck to last 2 week IMO with hotels, travel food and beer. 45,000bt, maybe a week if you stay in decent hotels, 4*+ an deat decent food. Have a goodun my friend. Make the most of that £1500!

$1500 for just spending....Putting a $30 US per day hotel on the credit card....Free breakfast buffet at the hotel....Chang beer from 7-11. I think I'll be fine. I came last year and spent very little. Thanks for your concern, but I don't need "decent" food. My budget will serve me well...I'm staying for one month and am making arrangements for the tourist visa to extend it beyond that.

  3. Most people here don't move to Bangkok (or Thailand) for that matter. Its just a place they come and spend some time. This includes me. 15+ years experience of Thailand makes me not want to move here, become a citizen, invest here or make my life here. I prefer my home country for most things. Why do I keep coming back? Kids. Otherwise I would have moved on to another country (Vietnam looks very inviting). So I rent a cheap condo to keep all of my stuff in when I am not here.

Good things are the girls, cheap food, plenty of places to visit (national parks, waterfalls, beaches, temples, mountains, etc), warm climate, bars, cheap hotels, good infrastructure, 7/11s everywhere, fairly modern, etc.

Were you not the guy who posted a thread about meeting and making decent friends here?

I am the last person that would be looking for friends. In short, no, I was not the person who posted a thread about meeting and making decent friends here.

  4. Bangkok has pretty much everything any other large city in the world has, it also has many of the same short comings… for me the positives out weigh the negatives.

I like Bangkok because I perhaps blend in there.

Some people think people in Bangkok are rude, well that’s the same as any city.

In Bangkok I don’t expect westerners to roll down the street singing ‘zippedy-do-dah’

Westerners do not stand out and are not the center of attention that they may be in less populated areas.

Westerners are not made to feel special when in our home countries we are simply insignificant (this might be why some don’t like Bangkok).

I like Bangkok because its more normal for me than other place in Thailand.

People don’t stare at me as much in Bangkok.

I don’t get high school students calling out to me.

I don’t get laborers asking me to meet their daughters.

In Bangkok we are nothing more than normal.

In Bangkok I feel I am treated equally with no more or less indifference than Thai’s around me.

I don’t want to be more special or considered worse than those around me depending on how much money I show off.

Life in Bangkok is simply more normal for me than I could imagine anywhere else in Thailand.

I have many excellent Thai friends in Bangkok who are well educated and view me as an equal, I’m not sure how successful I could be in finding similar friends outside of Bangkok.

Life of course is different for everyone… For me, life in Bangkok is as normal as I need it to be.

Very good response....No matter where in the world you go, there you are. I have felt the same sentiments in Los Angeles, Honolulu, Tijuana, Fort Lauderdale, ________________________, etc. etc. etc.

  5. "Why Move To Bangkok? Why leave the comforts of the western world for Thailand"

Why Move To Bangkok? Why indeed.

Are you inviting replies regarding moving to Bangkok, or Thailand….Bangkok is not representative, in my opinion of the rest of Thailand?

Either one....Despite its issues, I thoroughly enjoy Bangkok, but would be interested in hearing from anyone with an opinion of living in LOS.

  6. I tried opening an account, on tourist visa, in SCB, Kasikorn, Ayuddhya (excuse spelling) and Bangkok Bank in the area where I live (Minburi) all refused. Even after confirming with the head offices that a work permit is not required, all refused on that basis. Went to Sukhumvit and opened 2, 1 with Kasikorn and 1 with SCB with just a passport and all within an hour. My advice would be go to areas which have heavy tourist traffic

Would you mind saying which SCB branch in Sukhumvit, I want to transfer an SCB account I have up country.

If I'm not mistaken, the Siam Commercial Bank on Soi 4 and Sukhumvit are pretty lenient when it comes to opening up an account.

  7. Hi, thank you for all your advice. We are just going to keep the lessons simple, include games and TPR and try to keep TTT to a minimum. I do think our biggest problem will be getting the students to understand our instructions so we're going to rehearse loads tonight and try to find the simplest way to say something (probably wont be that easy when we're standing in front of the class!). Thanks again for all your help!

If I were you, I would break the lesson up into three equally-timed parts: reading, writing, and speaking (in any order of your choosing).

By getting them to do these three tasks in that time frame, it will demonstrate that you can get them on task and make them productive.

Also, I would advise against learning their names. Sure, introduce yourself. But to get 30 - 40 names (and Thai names at that) would be useless because you may remember three or four, but the rest will be a blur. Administration may see that as a rookie ploy of "buying time" or "sponging."

  8. Not a surprise. They do the same thing here in Hawaii. They call it a "kamaaina rate." All you need is to have a Hawaii driver's license and you can get hotel rooms, meals, etc. discounted. You can land here, go to the DMV, get a Hawaii license, and you are automatically a "local" or "resident," though I still use such words with extreme reservation.

  9. I know times are hard.........drinking tap water. Have you ever been called cheap charlie or am i the first one. giggle.gif

You're darn right I've been called a cheapskate before. No problems with that...It is the Royal Ivory Hotel on Soi 4 and I stayed there last year....A great place, cheap, very clean, and very convenient. I'll stick to the bottled water from the 7-11. Or I'll just switch over to Chang instead. Water's over-rated.

  11. I just had a look at kayak.com and they showed a bookable fare for 20 June HNL-BKK-BKK for $1329. Not sure what sort of price you found on PI. I never actually flown China Airlines, so I don't know if they are any better than PI, but they aren't rated by US FAA in Category II for safety, and although not great, Taipei is definitely a much better airport to spend a few hours in than Manila.

Thanks for the information. I obviously want to fly out for as cheap as possible. PAL = $1100 US. China = $1300-1400 US. Korean = $1450 US...

Will these prices likely increase the sooner it gets to June? Some have suggested that they could since travel season to BKK is currently happening at this time of the year.

Any input with valid information would be appreciated.

  12. I would definitely rather sit around in Narita for a few hours than even one hour in Manila, particularly in Terminal 1 which has to be the shabbiest airport in an Asian capital.

As for Philippine Airlines? Shabby again with very low marks for service AND safety. They are banned from Europe and the US FAA downgraded them from Category I to Category II in 2008 for safety reasons, which means they can keep their existing flights but cannot add any new ones. The US Embassy subsequently issued a warning to US citizens in the Philippines “to refrain from using Philippine-based carriers due to ‘serious concerns'.

How much money did you say you were going to save????

By the way, I unfortunately have to pass through MNL every month and recently nearly every flight has been delayed due to flow control. Most recently, it took 45 minutes to land from the time we arrived over the field due to traffic. There is only a single runway at MNL and at certain times there are long waits for departure and landing clearance. And then there are immigration queues, but that's another story.

PAL is about $300 US cheaper than the other airliners. So you are adamantly opposed to PAL? I'd like to check China Airlines, but they do not allow me to book so far in advance (I will be in BKK in June 2012). Any suggestions?

  13. "Of these oranges, 7% (go/goes) bad. How many oranges are good?"

    JAAPFRIES is incorrect.

"Seven percent go bad" is correct.

Explanation: Obviously, seven percent of the oranges have gone bad, meaning more than one orange. So...if one orange went bad, one would say, "Of these oranges, one goes bad." Since you are asking whether to use the word "go" or "goes," I must clarify: Does it sound awkward? Yes. Can you say, "Of these oranges, one go bad"? No.

"Goes" works because no matter if it is two oranges or twelve or twenty oranges, seven percent is a multiple -- hence: "Seven percent go bad." Just like you would say, "Of these oranges, two/twelve/twenty go bad."

If Jaapfries is an English instructor, he better brush up on his subject-verb agreement rules.

  14. I didn't read many of the other posts, but contact lenses are a complete hassle. I wore them for over ten years, then decided to get Lasik eye surgery. Is the procedure a bitch? Yes. Do I now have 20-20 vision in both eyes for the rest of my life? Absolutely.

    Contacts and glasses both suck.

  15. I flew twice this year from SFO to BKK via Manila on Philippine Air as an air courier. Overall, a pretty shabby operation. The 747-400's are tired looking; stained and threadbare upholstery, cabins stale smelling. Seating is very cramped, the least amount of leg-room on any international carrier I've flown. Food was mediocre. IFE very poor; one flight had only one large, out of focus screen on front cabin wall; terrible slash and crash movie. Other flight had seatback tv's but they quit working an hour into the flight and never came back on.

FA's were attentive and friendly. If you are travelling on to BKK, there is a long layover in MNL. They put you into a small transit lounge with comfortable chairs and offer you a free meal voucher at an airport cafe. They will even deliver it to you in the lounge. The new terminal departure area is not bad; free internet on offer.

I am flying to BKK from Hawaii soon and have been looking into flights with Philippine Airlines. Regarding the "long layover in MNL," on the itinerary, you will only be in MNL for approximately two hours (coming from Hawaii, into MNL, and departing for BKK). What is so long about two hours?

If you have experience where your flight was delayed coming through MNL, I would appreciate your insight on this. If not, I think two hours is reasonable, especially since earlier this year, I sat around at Narita Airport for five or six hours between flights...

  16. I agree. You don't need malaria meds as I've never heard of anyone getting malaria here. Maybe in Africa... But everyone who travels should get vaccinated for Hepatitis A and B.

Does any forum members have a ball-park figure of how much a vaccination for Hep A and B is (in Thai baht or $US)?

    $10 US, $40 US, $120 US?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
