  1. I should have mentioned in my previous post that I have a border run as an option, too, as I am aware of the possibility of spending more time in LOS by visiting a neighboring country.

Any other members have information related to the seven day extension and the 30 day visa exemption?

Thanks for the quick replies, gents.

  2. I know that with an entry stamp to the Kingdom, one has thirty days to stay. I want to stay beyond thirty days, but do not have much time available due to work. If I only want to stay maybe a week longer than the thirty days permitted, I know that I can get a tourist visa or get an extension from immigration for seven days.

THAT SAID: What is the likelihood of the immigration authorities denying a seven day extension? What are the reasons they may deny someone this extension? Has anyone on this forum ever been denied this extension? If so, why were you denied? If not, please share your experience.

I'm looking forward to well-informed input on this subject.

    Thanks for your time.

  3. "The non-University educated simply don't know that they don't know."

Very true. Many of the non-college people think of college as though it is prison. They don't understand that it opens up your mind to so many different ideas and philosophies.

Ignorance is bliss, I guess. For those who continue their education, kudos. For those who do not, I'm sure it is quite easy to criticize something that you have never officially ensconced yourself in.

It's like combat vets who tell eveyone else, "you can't comment on war, because you've never experienced it first hand." I resent that sort of argument. I can comment on all sorts of topics which I don't happen to have 1st hand experience at. You do it also, if you make a comment about Antarctica, Space travel, deep sea mining, paedophilia, or any of thousands of topics you've probably never experienced first hand.

Back on topic: I don't think of Universities and colleges as prisons. I see them largely as giant sucking machines - sucking up government grants and parents' money. In large part to perpetuate the myth that a diploma is essential - to get ahead in this world. Tell that to Steve Jobs or Bill Gates, neither of whom had a diploma.

Pray tell: you wish to avoid universities yourself, and you advocate that they are a waste of space/time/__________. So, in your opinion (not that it matters much), a high school graduate can hope to achieve $XXX,XXX income by doing................???

Selling things on Ebay? Playing a harmonica on a street corner? Working retail for minimum wage? Give me a break.

  4. We were not discussing slackards Scott. You basically pointed to teachers who were grumbly about their surroundings and ever-changing circumstances, they theoretically could be the BEST teachers in the lot.

If the salary were commensurate with the expectations and a respectable wage, then the pool of qualified teachers would increase.

So, in other words....YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR! thumbsup.gifcheesy.gif

Maybe you out to have gone for the Philosophy degree Scott. Analytical thinking obviously not your strong suit. ED not strong in analytical skills but great for teaching children for LESS MONEY than working @ McD's - no doubt.

There is no worse degree, a degree that prepares one for absolutely nothing save for teaching children - than the ED degree. What is worse, a person that gets an MA / Ed. In the US the only purpose for this is Elementary School (K-8) administration. Leave that environment and you too will be asking - Fries with that??!

With a Master's in Education, you can choose to teach primary (elementary school, K - 5) or secondary (middle/intermediate, 6 - 8 and/or high school 9 - 12). The salaries tend to be slightly higher on for secondary educators, and in some states, such as Hawaii, California, Michigan, New York, and others, someone with a Master's Degree in Education can earn anywhere between $45,000 USD to $70,000 USD per year. This is including three months off for summer, two weeks off for winter, one week off for fall break, one week off for spring break, and all state holidays--while still being paid regularly every 15 days. While these are not exorbitant amounts, I don't think anyone would have any trouble paying a mortgage, saving money, and traveling regularly with either end of this spectrum of income.

  5. An intensely strong trope of anti education festers across UK society. It contrasts with the intense celebration of it in Japan. The non-University educated simply don't know that they don't know. Thai education is a failure in teaching the epistemological issues. So it could be learnt out of a book.

As a teacher, I have students who grumble and whine about taking notes (very basic notes, such as ten vocabulary words, ten literary terms, or notes related to themes, motifs, or symbolism). Will these people make it in a University, where the notes are constantly being written as a professor delivers their lecture? I don't know, but I certainly doubt it.

  6. There are organized daily trips all inclusive for about 2k from several Bangkok providers (they can be found with Google and advertise in classified section of newspapers). Border with Cambodia is the crossing (different points).

Regarding these organized daily trips, what is the itinerary like? Long bus ride to the border, then make a U-turn in Cambodia? How long does the process take from pick up to returning to Bangkok? Are they reliable/trustworthy? Any farang owners of such companies (not that they could be trusted anymore than anyone else, but curious to find out)?

  7. It is not an official extension and can be denied. Normally it is not denied, but would require show of a plane ticket out of the coutnry within those 7 days. You must go to an immigration office with your passport, a passport photo and copy of passport, ticket and 1,900 baht.

Just doing a border run would give you 15 days.

Thanks, Mario....Where would be the most convenient, easiest border run from BKK?

  8. 2x 60 means you have to make a border hop to activate the second entry

30d extension can be made at local immigration office

7d extension is available both on 30d visa exemption stamp on arrival and extended tourist visa (60 + 30 + 7).

Cost for all extensions is 1,900 Baht, Passport photo.

Overstay is 500Baht a day, maxing out at 20,000 Baht total.

First day of overstay is waived at the airport only.

If a 7 day extension is available on a 30 day visa exemption stamp, can you be denied this stamp?

What is the process one needs to go to in order to extend one's trip an additional 7 days with a 30 day visa exemption stamp?

Thanks for the speedy responses. Looking forward to getting these answers...

  9. I spent a lot of time hiring people--almost entirely for the teaching field. The success rate correlates directly with the education. In the past year, we had no teacher with a B.Ed. who was dismissed or for whom there was criticism of their work. We had a small number of Bachelor's degree holders, but not in Education, who received a somewhat critical review of their performance, but none faced a non-renewal of contract. In general, this last group knew the subject material very well, but the techniques of teaching were deficient.

Of those that had no University level education, about 40% had to be discharged or faced non-renewal of the contract. They simply did not have the ability to face any of the challenges that fell out of the ordinary. They lacked adaptability and some simply didn't have the basic knowledge of the subject material to effectively teach.

The last group all 'just loved teaching' and they 'just loved the children', but the administration was no good, the homeroom teachers were no good etc. Everything was the problem except them.

Not a suprise at all, really. Teaching requires many skills, and the average back-packer with no background in education would do a paltry job compared to somebody who studied Education in college.

  10. There will be a small dely of maybe 5 minutes, as the passport will be stamped as overstay (but no fine levied).

So far the stamp in the paspsort has no consequences, you can return the same day if you want.

Unless flying Thai, you can only drop off your luggage 3 hours before the flight and get your boarding pass. So you simply will be on overstay.

If you really want to avoid an overstay, you can apply for a 7 day extension of stay at immigration with your ticket, for 1,900 baht an a passport photo. But I would not be surprised if they turn you away and tell you to just go to the airport.

If you come to Thailand without a tourist visa, and only the 30 day allowance for visiting, can you extend a trip an additional 7 days through the immigration authorities? If so, how much does it cost?

    Please respond. Thanks.

  11. Typical 30K baht salary a month? What age is the average teacher there? Any additional pay for persons with Master's Degrees in Education, a valid teaching license from USA, public school teaching experience, and a good work record?

If you had all those things, why on earth would you be searching for a job at a Thai government school, and for 30K at that?

I'd be more interested in finding out about work at an International School in Bangkok. I would hope with my experience, I could do a tad better than a mere 30K baht per month. If anyone hears anything from a real International School in Bangkok, please feel free to drop me a PM.

You won't find jobs at real international schools on here, nor on ajarn.com.

    Try here: http://www.tes.co.uk/jobs/

Or look directly at a school's website. Here is a list of international schools in Thailand:

Thanks for the resources...I'll have to start digging around...
